Here's a question for everyone:

Which of Meat's songs do you think are most improved when sung live as compared to the studio versions?
Conversely, which songs are never as good live as on the albums?

Just to make it interesting you're not allowed to pick anything from Bat 1.

Mine
Better live: Life Is A Lemon, Frying Pan, Modern Girl, Midnight, Amnesty Is Granted, Dead Ringer

Not better live: Rock And Roll Dreams, Anything For Love, Did I Say That?, Jumpin' The Gun, Bad Attitude

Midnight, definitely sounds better live. I'd say more than better. I miss the 'funky' version...

Midnight is much better live, the percussion really brings it to life

Life Is A Lemon live I absolutely love...when I was younger I was never overly keen on the album track but the live versions over recent tours have just got better and better, the MSO version is spot on I think.

Rock and Roll Dreams live is a really hard one for me...the album version is so so special to me, but I was completely blown away every time I saw the live version in May. It still had the characteristics of the album version - the heavy bass at the beginning etc - but the extras made it even better...the ending really is one of the most wonderful things I've seen in a live Meat show (I'm honestly welling up thinking of it! :p ), Dave's sax is increadible....I could go on forever!

Couldn't Have Said It Better live with MSO is better than the album version in my opinion, as is Testify from the same show

This isn't to a specific time right? Cause I think Life is a lemon in 1994-96 was the best it's sounded...but anyway

Sounds much better Live: Life is a lemon, Out of the frying pan, Rock n Roll Dreams, All Revved up, Took the words (again around 1994-96), Paradise, Midnight at the lost and found

Not as good live: For crying out loud, Land of the pig (i love the song but live it's not a tap on the original) Blind as a bat, Everything Louder, Dead Ringer for love,

There are those that would argue that there isn't a difference between the two :lmao:

You're right about Blind As A Bat...they really managed to capture the emotion of the song live and it was often quite moving to watch, but if we're talking purely about sound quality then the album version is the one

Did I Say That had a fantastic live arrangement, which brought the already superb album version to life.

Nowhere Fast was another song that really took on a whole new life when it was performed live all those years ago.

Not sure if it's "better" than the album version as such but I've always loved Heaven Can Wait live, especially how it is on MSO with the strings (which they've been doing ages, since around Bat II? )

The album version is wonderful and is how it was always intended to sound and so I love it, but the orchestra gets my vote every time

off the top of my head:

better: break it
worse: blind as a bat

there are more, but these two are the most obvious I think

Very true, but then it was already awesome to start with!

You can't beat Bat out of Hell imo. Best song, best artist, best composer, best arrangement, best live version, best emotion, best guitar solos etc etc. It has it all. Everything else musically will always remain in its shadow I believe.

But fair enough not picking Bat 1 songs eh?
Best: Pretty much all of Bat 2 and CHSIB. My personal highlights DIST, CHSIB and AFL. Hearing Objects at RAH was a pretty much once in a lifetime experience I guess too. Also Bad for Good was pretty excellent at RAH imo.
Worst: IACBTMN, DRFL (miss the horns and the thousand guitars at the end).

Not as good- Deadringer.

Ah but it would definitely be better with CC singing it  I'd really love to see CC do Dead Ringer this leg of the tour

Better - CHSIB ( The drum solo)

I'd like to see CC doing Dead Ringer or even Paradise, purely out of interest I guess, she's been with the band for years now and I don't think she's really been given a chance to shine yet

How about a duet of 'don't you look at me like that' between Meat and CC...yeah right!

Personally I believe that Anything For Love is the best sung live. At every concert I have been to the most eagerly awaited moment is the duet at the end. For me the crowds come alive when Meat sings the last notes before the duet begins. Whether it be Patti or Aspen, I truly adore the duet, it gives me goosebumps and is the most amazing feeling and emotion. I adore this song live.
