View Full Version : What did you get for Christmas?

Just wondering if anyone got any good Meat pressies yeaterday?

Amazingly, from my father-in-law, I got 'The Salton Sea' on DVD
It's been on my Amazon wish list for a while and when he asked me what I wanted, I pointed him in the direction of the wish list. (For a 69 year old, he is quite apt with a PC and ordering online - unlike my father, the technophobe).

I know very little about the film other than the cast and what it says on the back of the case.
Has anyone seen it?

Now I just need some quality 'me time' to sit and watch it!!

You like white chocolate then Emma?! And cats! ;)

I'm still wading through my tonne of chocolate and loving every guilt-free minute of it (can't be healthy with chocolate around therefore must be eaten in order for health-kick to start).

Here's this year's prezzie conundrum for ya...
My friend Anna and I like to set a 'target' (not limit; target - the idea is to spend as close to the target as possible without going over - going over the target is cheating!) for our Christmas presents to each other which over the years have varied from £1 (that was last year and she bought me moose shaped pasta from Ikea - very cool!) to £10 (I know look at us being the world's greatest spenders...but the idea really is to hve a bit of fun trying to get a particular value and also show that we are thinking about each other at Christmas without spending a tonne of money - and we've been doing this for about 8 years now!)
This year Anna requested a £3-challenge. And a challenge for me it was, as I had already found (and bought) a rather cool grow-your-own christmas tree (actual soil, seeds, and packet, to grow it in!) to go towards Anna's gifts which cost the pricey sum of... something like 39p leaving me a £2.61 challenge. Thanks to tax being knocked off things at the tills I was 3p short of the target and mentioned this to Anna (ok ok I'm getting to the point, bear with me) who said she rekoned that was close enough as she had only guessed the value for mine and I would see when I opened it. So I was expecting something along the lines of Anna's infamous baking or cross stitches. The gift was... a rather lovely off white pashmina (70% cashmere, 30% something else)...how is that £3? and how does one come to be guestimating its value?

(if anyone is interested, for the £2.97, Anna received...a grow-your-own christmas tree, a chocolate recipes calendar, some christmas cookie/biscuit cookers (she's a keen and very skilled baker, and either of these might encourage her to do yet more baking next time I am visiting), and a fancy patterned emery board - I was quite proud to keep all that under £3!)

having posted it, that now just looks like a big post of waffle. so I won't be offended if no one reads it!

as people seem to be posting lists of what they received, here's the highlights of mine:-

* No less than 7 different types of chocolate, plus jelly tots :-?
* From friends / relations, amongst other things - aforementioned pashmina, clutch bag, Gordon Ramsay cookbook, money which will treat me to a new kettle and almost a new toaster :-D
* An Ikea voucher (wooo!) from parents AND promise of contribution towards my as yet non-existent washing machine :-D
* Special Kay DVD and a book entitled "how to do just about everything"

Feeling very lucky and spoilt (but not quite fat just yet!)

You have my deepest sympathies Dave, I was once misdiagnosed with a bit of a cough, nothing we can do, sorry, when in actuality I had double pneumonia....

Not much fun...

Nope. Actually it's the second time - I had double pneumonia 5 years ago. It was kinda double-double in that it was 2 separate types of pneumonia as well as both lungs. It made me so tired that even cleaning my teeth was something like:

Get out of bed
Sit on bed to rest for 5 minutes and persuade myself I'm not done yet
Walk to bathroom
Sit on bath for 10 minutes to recover
Pick up toothbrush
Persuade myself that I still need to do something with it
Clean teeth
Stagger back and collapse on bed

The feeling of complete lethargy was just incredible, and was by far the worst part of the experience.

This time (so far) that part isn't anywhere near so bad. The worst thing had been the lack of sleep. For some reason within minutes of falling asleep I wake up with a coughing fit, meaning that I've managed just a couple of hours in the last week, I'd guess. Didn't sleep at all in hospital.

You have my deepest sympathies Dave, I was once misdiagnosed with a bit of a cough, nothing we can do, sorry, when in actuality I had double pneumonia....

A man went to see his doctor because he was suffering from a miserable cold. His doctor prescribed some pills, but they didn't help.
On his next visit the doctor gave him an injection, but that didn't do any good.
On his third visit the doctor told the man, "Go home and take a hot bath. As soon as you finish bathing, throw open all the windows and stand in the draft."
"But doc," protested the patient, "if I do that, I'll get pneumonia."
"I know," said the doctor, "I can cure pneumonia." :lmao:
