The first rule of Fight Club is “Don’t talk about fight club,” but maybe it should be “Don’t make a musical about fight club.” Just don’t tell author Chuck Palahniuk or Trent Reznor (http://www.ez-tracks.com/showArtists-OrigArtist-Nine%20Inch%20Nails.html).


The acclaimed author, along with film director David Fincher, recently confirmed to MTV News (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1581065/story.jhtml)that they are in talks to develop a Broadway musical (http://www.ez-tracks.com/Broadway.html) version of the popular book and film, with the (unconfirmed) possibility of tapping Nine Inch Nails master mind Trent Reznor as the musical director. While it seems unlikely that Brad Pitt will reprise his role on stage, the film did feature the inexplicably popular singer, Meat Loaf.

Meat Loaf and Trent Reznor? That’s far more disturbing than the original plot of the story.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a terrible idea has made it to the musical stage. And just because it’s awful, doesn’t mean it won’t be a smash hit—after all, Cats was performed for over 20 years.

Obviously this person is no fan of Meat or Trent Reznor. Personally I don't see why this should be such a bad idea. West Side Story & Streets Of Fire were pretty violent musicals that worked really well.

Since Trent Reznor wrote Hurt (one of my alltime favourite non Meat/Steinman songs) I'd be interested to hear what he could come up with for Fight Club.

i actually cant see it myself but i would go see it, to see how well it worked and how they did it.

two thoughts:

1) Sounds very interesting, would definitely get a recording of that one.

2) I actually cant see this working ... The fascination and magic of the movie is mainly due to the amazing directing of David Fincher...cant see how this could be transferred to the stage...

Last year fight club the play was on at the Lawrence Batley theatre in Huddersfield, but i never got to see it wish i had now it wasn't a musical but i can't imagine how they did it. God knows what a musical would be like haha

David Fincher would be very much involved it seems! :mrgreen: I find this idea very exciting. Wonder if Meat will be approached to reprise his role.

'Fight Club' On Broadway? Director, Writer Plan To Mark Film's 10-Year Anniversary With A Musical

Trent Reznor might even do the music, author Chuck Palahniuk says he heard from filmmaker David Fincher.

A long-rumored Broadway adaptation of "Fight Club" (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1579041/20080104/story.jhtml) is closer than ever to happening, an excited David Fincher told MTV News, admitting that preparations have been amped up in anticipation of the film's upcoming landmark.

"I want at the 10-year anniversary to do 'Fight Club' as a musical on Broadway," the director enthused. "I love the idea of that."

Apparently, so do many others. Now that Fincher has broken Fight Club's first rule (and, for that matter, its second), the masterminds behind the film are eager to join the chorus — none more so than "Club" author Chuck Palahniuk, who said he thinks the idea for a musical is as beautiful and unique as a tiny snowflake. (Note: You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.)

"So he's now publicly talking about it?" Palahniuk enthused. "If it happens, it would be extraordinary."

"If" being the operative word at the moment, both men admit, since no concrete plans have yet been finalized. If it does make its way to the stage, though, "Fight Club: The Musical" would join a long list of movies adapted for the Great White Way, including recent additions like "The Producers," "Spamalot" and "Young Frankenstein."

Those movies and others, however, already had the benefit of being a little campy, making it easier to retroactively fit big song-and-dance numbers into their respective story lines. This is something "Fight Club" cannot claim — or can it?

"Everybody would look at me like a leper," he said. " I always saw it as a comedy."

Which is good news for those of us who'd like to see songs like "I Am the All-Singing, All-Dancing Crap of This World," "His Name Is Robert Paulson" and "How to Make Napalm From Orange Juice and Gasoline," but not so good for those who might like a more serious take.

Luckily, Fincher and Palahniuk have a pretty solid plan B, they told MTV News.
"The last I heard from David was that Trent Reznor was going to do the music," the author revealed (representatives for Reznor had no comment by press time). "Maybe 'Choke' the musical will be next!" he added, referring to another one of his works that is being made into a film (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1566440/20070806/story.jhtml) (it's due in theaters August 28).

Maybe, but either way, Palahnuik admitted he'll have little involvement with any future adaptation.

"I might write the book or the script," Palahnuik said, "but [a musical is] a whole different animal for me."

There is no word yet whether any of the film castmembers would reprise their roles. The 1999 film starred Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf and Helena Bonham Carter.

MEAT LOAF WOULDN'T DO FIGHT CLUB: THE MUSICAL. MTV News recently reported that both director David Fincher and author Chuck Palahnuik would like to bring Fight Club to Broadway as a musical. So what does Meat Loaf, the man who famously portrayed "Robert Paulson" in the flick, think of the idea? He didn't even know about it. "I didn't hear that. FightClub the... ha... I probably wouldn't be doing that. I'd go see it, but I don't think I'd do it. It's tough for me, I'm sure somebody has a really good idea for it but it's tough for me to have the idea for it. I can't picture it." While as yet, there is no word if Meat Loaf's castmates, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton or Helena Bonham Carter will join the ensemble, there are reports that if Fight Club the musical does make it to the Great White Way, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor might do the music for it.

Sounds like Meat echoed pretty much what the majority of us were saying all, i cant see them getting the original cast to do it, too many big names but i'm not an expert in stage shows so who knows.
