great video that is, very steinmanesque, especially the dancing with the dead boby.

Nice song. All it needs is a decent pair of voices instead of the ones on the video and it coule be really good. Wonder if Jim has thought about suggesting it to Meat?

( Runs for cover ready for a barrage of people not realising its a tongue in cheek post )

Elaine's version is of course by far the best. No doubt about it

not a comment to you by any means dave but i think some people are too biased and blind sometimes to make a impartial comment on a song just beacuse their fave artist/songwriter had something to do with it, as i said i dont think Meat's on is that great either.

The lady singing does a good job but as far as female vocalists go on this song I am still very much loving Celiné Dion's version. As for the video... :wtf: I don't get it, it didn't really have a thought out story line where as Meat's told a story of his fiancé being killed in a car crash and there fore makes sense where as this just seemed rushed.

For sure this is true. Except for me

When I got BatIII I played this track and the Pandora's Box version back-to back a couple of times. Main difference to me is the production being much better on the original. As for the Cardboard Box version (comment (c) Elaine Caswell ), I happen not to like Celine's voice.

btw, the single most thrilling live musical moment for me was seeing Elaine singing this song at the last TDE gig in New York. Just stunning.

To me the PanBox video is full of subtlety, darkness, romance and passion, just like Jim's songs, while Meat's video is nice to look at, but it doesnt stay in your mind, just like a hollywood blockbuster: Easy storyline, good pictures, nice to look at, but you forget it the moment you walk out of the cinema.

Sorry, but that just struck me as really funny.

The truism that you can argue the facts over and over again using valid reasons and positive proof why something is better, and people will still like what they like 8)

Musically I think Celine's version is VERY similar to the original version. Steinman has even used the same sound effects I believe.
I definitely think the original is by far the best. I think Celine's shouting is just terrible and spoils the song. She seems to have been doing that since the mid nineties. I still don't believe Meat saying that it was written for him originally, I doubt that this is true. Also I don't think it works as a duet that well.

To me the lyrics are so obviously about a woman missing a lost love. Although Celine's video isn't terrible (heavily influenced by AFL though) I always imagined the Pandora's Box story to be about a group of youths trying to get out of a damned city and I was imagining IACBTMN (video/film whatever) to include a scene where the girl is on the back of a motorbike and the guy and girl fly away from the city (during the guitar solo at the crescendo bit). This particular video posted here is awful imo.

That's what I do not like about Celine Dion. She sings perfectly but she seems to lack emotion when singing. But that's something many female singers do nowadays. They apparently believe they appear emotional by shouting out the lyrics. I once saw Celine on stage together with Carole King. Technically, King is not a good singer but the soulful way in which she sings makes up for it. I really enjoyed listening to King while I considered Dion's performance rather boring.

It's a strange one but somehow funny. I often burst into laughter when seeing all those half-naked guys dancing around in the Steinman videos. :lmao:

i'm sometimes suprised what some people call a love song - no emtion in it. my best example is pet shop boys (sorry - it is just my opininon)

I don't think anyone's grasped what the song is about, and how hard that would be to show in any video. Granted, Ken Russell's filmed effort seen here didn't make the grade, neither did Celine's, and Meat's was just derivative of Celine's. To quote Jim:

I was trying to write a song about dead things coming to life. I was trying to write a song about being enslaved and obsessed by love, not just enchanted and happy with it. It was about the dark side of love; about the ability to be resurrected by it... It's about obsession, and that can be scary because you're not in control and you don't know where it's going to stop.

It says that, at any point in somebody's life, when they loved somebody strongly enough and that person returns, a certain touch, a certain physical gesture can turn them from being defiant and disgusted with this person to being subservient again. And it's not just a pleasurable feeling that comes back, it's the complete terror and loss of control that comes back. And I think that's ultimately a great weapon. I think you can't get much more operatic or passionate than that.

Now, whose performance conveys that best vocally (never mind visually) is another story. But just some food for thought.

Agreed. Not to sound like too much of a jerk, but the Pandora's Box 'IACBTMN' video achieves the remarkable feat of sucking even more than the Steinman 'RNRDCT' vid.

I think Steinman's 80s approach to music videos was a bit too "arty farty" in my opinion. Yet he seems to have given absolute perfect isntructions to Michael Bay's Bat 2 ones, which were spot on and in my opinion the best music video trilogy on the planet ever.
