View Full Version : Take a penalty against Meat Loaf for charity
ROCK star Meat Loaf proved today he has a big heart too by backing two North East charities supported by the Chronicle.
He is to give something back to the region after cutting short his last gig here due to ill health and is urging his fans to help him raise money for the two good causes.
The chart-topping entertainer agreed to help the Chronicle’s backing of both the Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre planned for the Freeman Hospital and the Toma Fund, set up to raise money for a Tyneside teenage cancer unit.
Later this month Meat Loaf will show he is also a ‘Dead Ringer For Glove’ when he puts himself between the posts for penalties to be taken at him at St James’s Park.
Today we launch an auction where the 100 highest bidders can take penalty kicks at the superstar when he makes the special fund- raising trip to the city on June 25.
He will try and save the penalties in front of inflatable goals in the family enclosure at the ground, and former Toon hero Peter Bearsdley will also be at the event watching on and lending support.
All 100 highest bidders get a photo with Meat and those who kick a goal past him also get two tickets and a merchandising certificate towards goods at his outdoor show at Castle Howard, Yorkshire, on July 11.
"It sounds fun for the people kicking the ball at me," laughed Meat. "I’m not so sure how much fun that is for me. I’ll just wing it. "The odds of them scoring are pretty good. It’s fun, it’s for great charities and there’s a good possibility you can score a goal. I’m just trying to give something back. I can’t give back that night, I can’t do it, it’s never going to happen. At least I can come back and feel I have done a little something.
"My mother died when I was 17 years old from cancer, at the age of 54, which is very young, and my grandfather died from leukaemia, so cancers run in my family."
About his gig last October, he said: "It’s been on my mind since that night. It’s been driving me crazy. I was beside myself. I still am, it really hurt.
"It messes with your pysche, your confidence level."
The Chronicle is appealing to readers to help raise £500,000 towards a £3m centre at the Freeman, where patients and their loved ones will be able to get advice on coping with their illness. Cancer charity Maggie’s hopes to open the new centre in 2010, and we teamed up with them to help give a massive boost to cancer patients in the North East. Along with Newcastle United, we are also supporting the Toma Fund , which was launched in April in tribute to Jordan Thompson, a young lad and aspiring football player, who died from cancer at the age of 15.

wow I'd love to do it, but I haven't got alot of money to spend on it....
It would be great if they managed to show it on Tv or something... Meat a goalkeeper... I gotta tell me brother he'd crease himself with laughter
Great prize aswell for winning a goal, tickets and merchandise.... Sounds like he's good at this kinda of thing, or he's gonna be giving away alot of tickets.....
Good Luck to those that win :-) and a cracking cause its going too....

Little bit more info on the charity and why it was set up to be found on the NUFC website...

ROCK legend Meat Loaf will be between the posts at St.James' Park later this month as he helps to raise money for the Toma Fund.
The chart-topping star will don his goalie gloves as he attempts to save penalty-kicks in front of inflatable goals set up inside the club's Family Enclosure.
Toon legend Peter Beardsley will be there and you can too by taking part in a charity auction set up by the Evening Chronicle.
The 100 highest bidders (* see below) will be able to take aim against the superstar when he makes his special fundraising trip to Tyneside on Wednesday, June 25.
Winners will get a photo with Meat Loaf and, those who manage to find the back of the net, will also bag two tickets and a merchandising certificate towards goods at his outdoor show at Castle Howard, Yorkshire, on July 11.
The Toma Fund was set up last year following the death of Magpie Academy youngster Jordan Thompson.
Jordan, whose nickname was Toma, was diagnosed with leukaemia at 13 and, during a 19-month battle, decided he wanted to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
After his death, mum Andrea set up the fund in his name to continue his good work.
David Williamson, executive director operations at Newcastle United, said: "We are delighted to be welcoming Meat Loaf to St James's Park.
"He is a true legend in the entertainment industry, indeed he is a unique performer.
"His generosity is helping raise money for charity, particularly the recently launched Toma Fund, is greatly appreciated by all of us here at Newcastle United. I'm sure we're set for a terrific day."
Proceeds from the event will also go to cancer charity Maggie's which aims to set up a Cancer Care Centre for the North East of England.

I just heard that someone has offered the full £5,000 for each of the 100 penalties. Apparently it's a guy called "J. Terry" who lives inLondon, who says he wants to get some practice in for next season ...

I think it's great Meat's doing this is a way of an apology for last year, and I can't think of a more worthy cause...just hope Meat doesn't do himself an injury two days before Plymouth!!

<<<Desperately tries to remove the image of Smoggy in a Newcastle United outfit running up to take a penalty!!!!!
Are you kidding me?! We've been to two football stadiums in the past week, didn't know where to put myself!! I think in this case I'd have to say :shit: to the ball and just run towards the goal! (and I use the term 'run' loosely)
In all seriousness though, I was saying to Andy this morning that I think the timing of this is a real shame. I don't think there's anyone whose lives haven't been affected by cancer in some way, I lost an uncle a few years back to leukaemia and I'd happily support anything that can help to conquer this god awful illness but with Meat's tour coming up all the fans have spent up on VIP packages :? I think a lot more of the Meat fan community would be bidding to take part had we not already spent up :?
I worded that terribly...just to be clear, what I meant was that having spent up for tour I wouldn't be able to bid enough money to the charity to be able to take part in the event as I otherwise would have, not that no-one here couldn't donate anything
Nah ... they weren't football stadiums they were Old Trafford and the Emirates, global corporate sandwich shops nothing more
Hope this event does get the support it deserves, both in terms of PR for Meat in the NE and more importantly for the excellent causes it's supporting!!

Nah ... they weren't football stadiums they were Old Trafford and the Emirates, global corporate sandwich shops nothing more
Unfortunately there is more and more of that, and i include my own club in that statement...too many people turn up 5 mins before the game, mostly later, then leave 20 mins into the game to go to the bathroom, leave 5 mins before half time and then come back 10 mins into the second half before leaving 10 mins before the end...and they call themselves fans?

It has got an excellent reaction up here, It also stated Meat would match whatever was raised. I think this is the best way to make up for what happened last year. He could have done another gig but just think how many more people he his going to help by doing this.
It is a win win situation, these excellent charites get a money boost and publicity, Meat get's positive publicity. Even Tony Horne on the local radio was positive, and he was one of the one's who was slating Meat after the show.:D
Can't remember if the links to the audio interviews got posted here. But i've joined the two and added them to The Naked Wire (http://www.thenakedwire.com) to download

It all sounds like a great fun day!
Its just a pity its out of reach for those fans who don't have loads of cash to chuck around.:(
Good luck to those who can afford it, I have other things to spend £5000 on, like bills.
And before anyone jumps down my throat for this post, It's just my opinion and I'm allowed one.
Personally I would have thought a concert at the same venue would have been a little more appropriate, but you can't please em all.

You don't have to bid £5000 which is why it's called an auction. The maximum you can bid is £5000. So if you could spare £50 you can bid that amount.
Michael i don't think they tell you i was woundering that myself, lol. Guess they hope people might panick at the last minute and bid a little bit more.

yeah that makes sense, guess we just have to put what little money we do have to chuck around on it and see what happens lol wish we did have £5000 but it certainly wouldnt all go on this auction, as you say geordie, a smallish bid might actually do it, it's worth a try. Would be nice to see Meat doing something different. I personally think he's got enough concerts lined up so a novelty event like this seems quite a refreshing change imo.
Not sure if everyone here knows or not. But Stu (Cujo on here I think, will have to double check in a min, if anyone else knows Stu or chelles (24k) details on here off hand feel free to add them lol as i'm insanely busy and thought i'd better post about this) There is lots of fans in other countries who wanted to bid but thought it not much point as they couldn't make it anyway. To cut a long story short (anyone else feel free to fill in the gaps lol) Stu is being sponspored by quite a few on net.
Makes bidding much more interesting if you either cant make it there on the day or cant kick a ball to save your life lol. As Stu has more chance of being one of the 100 if lots of us sponsor him. So we actually get to have a Meat fan kick balls at Meat for us all rather than just bid and know we aren't in with a chance as sadly most of us cant afford it.
Stu and Chelle both live in Newcastle and have raised money for local charities on many occasions. Stu is going to get some corporate sponsors as well
So if anyone wants to sponsor them, pm them on here or meatloaf.net
The threads on .net is HERE (http://www.meatloaf.net//bbs/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=79372&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1)
It'd be very cool to see a fan and friend to many in the Meat community be one of those lucky enough to kick balls at Meat. Much better imo than just seeing those who have tons of money to throw around win :D

07 Jun 2008, 23:02
lol Deb, you really did type that in a rush didnt you hun.
Basically guys, there were quite a few fans who wanted to donate to the charity and support Meat too but wouldnt be able to take the kick or didnt have enough money to put in a serious bid, therefore, Stu (cujo) has been nominated to collect as much sponsor money as he can from fans and elsewhere, if he wins the bid, he will then take the kick on behalf of all the fans who wanted to show their support and will point this out to Meat on the day. It certainly does make sense for those who want to do something but cant bid for whatever reason.
Its a great idea, and a very worthy cause. Deb is indeed right a lot of people on net are getting behind this. My hubby Stu is gonna get some corporate sponsorship, see how much he can get them to part with. We will aslo be adding our own donation to the pot.
However, i understand if people want to do their own thing:)))
If anyone wants any info on joining the sponsorship please pm me or Stu ( cujo ). All details of peoples donations and pledges will remain strictly confidential. I do have paypal for those overseas, cheques can be made payable to the charity itself if preferred.
Hopefully we will win one of those places, i will hopefully be there to film it.
I have had hubby in the park, jumpers for goalposts;)LOL....
Thats an understatement Anji lol. Thanks for making it sound more sensible both of you lol.
Technically I have two days left before I go on tour  and my head has seriously lost the plot lol.:shock::shock::shock::shock:
