View Full Version : A (semi) fitting tribute

PanicLord

Hi All

I really loved the way the Jim Steinman fan site did a fan CD tribute to Steinman, and I thought I would do the same thing for Meat.

I reckoned the CD from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra would be a good place to start, and I first tried YTTWROOM. It's not bad - it's only a 2nd take, and the volume needs levelling etc (and all the usual excuses... :) ). Seriously, I am NOT a professional singer and it shows, but I just wanted to give it a go.

IF anyone wants to hear it, please PM me and i'll send it to you!

Luv

TRex

I was just thinking of a similar idea a couple days ago, albeit much wider in scope. I was gonna suggest that all the fans at MLUKFC contribute to an annual thing or something, starting at Stoney and Meatloaf and ending at Bat III (or whatever new album(s) Meat has put out by then). Call it too ambitious, but I think there are many out there who even jokingly could lay down some tracks.

Okay, okay, I've heard that one before, I get it. When I tried to do it when I was a kid (just a year or two ago ), I had no clue how much money was actually involved. I had some rough math that didn't actually add up to what I thought it should. Doesn't mean that bringing back Tanz in English is a bad idea, I had other sources of money who were interested and I'm still gonna try to do it.

Perhaps some people want to do something that's a bit more personal as a tribute to Meat. Easier isn't always better.

I think the cd tribute is a good idea. It would be nice to see other takes on the non Steinman tracks for a change in my opinion. I reckon hardly any of them have ever been covered.

And let's not just see slavish reproductions of the rarely covered ones...do something new! Rock up the BBIS tracks! Try a horrid flamenco rendition of something! Meat in a loving new style.

By the way, one of the reasons I like the Royal Philharmonic is because they do incluide some of the best non-Steinman stuff, and as you say, this doesn't get covered enough, so I'm going to have a go!

Good to hear your recording. Much better than anything I could do! Are they real instruments or on a keyboard? I'm interested to know what you used & how you did it etc. Will look forward to hearing your other versions.

Also, just to add my two-penneth in here, I think a Meat tribute album (like the NBAMN one the Steinman fans did) is an excellent idea. Despite what Mike might say, I really don't think that I can sing (not to a quality any one would want to listen to anyway!) and I can only play musical instruments to what I would say was a basic level, but if there is anyway I could help in this I'd love to get on board. And hopefully I can look forward to hearing everyone's contributions.

And Mike....you are contibuting whether you like it or not. No argument ;)

PanicLord

I'm afraid it wasn't really me playing the instruments, it was the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra :)

Well, I'd like to ask the mods, let's start a thread in the appropriate forum for the tribute recording. Because I suggested it, I'd be more than happy to step in as production supervisor or whatever the title is. It's about time someone other than Meat did some of these songs, right? Let's do this! :D

On the Steinman tribute most stayed away from backing tracks and the like as it would sound too karaoke and not really from the heart of their interpretation of the song.

Correct. Although my version of Heaven Can Wait was pretty similar to the original, regarding key/tempo etc, but it was me playing the piano and singing, no backing track. If I get the time, I'll do something similar again, a stripped down piano version of a song. Maybe Left In The Dark? Been wanting to have a stab at that one for a while now.

You know what, folks...I think all of us will love this kind of thing...we have quite a few tributes or people aspiring to be tributes or just very very good singers...I heard enough good singing from people here to make an independent band or two...

The valid point was made above though...is this encroaching on somebody's copyright and/or somebody's intellectual property? Both Meat and Jim are Americans...we don't use toilet paper here until we make sure it's copyrighted...and I am not sure how those laws work...oh I sort of know how they work here...but I am not sure our laws stretch across the ocean...

Before we go all gung ho...is anybody an expert here?

WhenItComes2LovingU
07 Aug 2008, 06:19
Have the songs been released? Yes? Then they are free to cover. Since this is not a commercial endeavor, we won't have to pay licensing fees to any publishers. You're not cutting off income to anyone's pocket. (Incidentally, that's why Meat did mostly covers of Jim's songs on Bat 3, except for "Pig" and "Heaven," which he pulled from demos and got Jim's permission to use in the lawsuit settlement. He would have to have Jim's permission to do any new or unreleased material with another producer, and Jim isn't likely to give it.)

One of my goals in starting all this up was to record some of the less covered, and in particular, non-Jim tracks. Not because I don't like Jim stuff, I love it, but there is great non-Jim stuff that is a bit under-rated and under-played.

My version of Modern Girl is WIP - I haven't quite finished yet, need to do the big finish. The rest is done though. Feel free to download it from www.paniclord.talktalk.net and post any feedback!
