View Full Version : Northerners urged to move South

Here's a story that caught my eye.
Apparently a think-tank (http://www.leighreporter.co.uk/latest-north-west-news/Northerners-urged-to-move-down.4385329.jp) has decided that Northern cities such as Liverpool are beyond revival and millions of their residents should move to London and the South East.
I can see their point and I'm a Northerner but now live in one of the most Southern cities on the planet. When you have cities like Liverppol where 26% of the people are sponging off the government (article HERE (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/columnists/kelvin_mackenzie/article1555358.ece)) and people in the south are paying high taxes so some Northerners can sit on their lazy asses and Southerners are having to employ foreigners to make up the workforce.
The only good thing to come out of this for the Southerners is, at least they'll be shown how to make decent Fish & Chips because because they're pretty clueless :barf:

As a Londoner myself ,having visited Liverpool and stayed over as my daughter Jo now lives there with her fiance Neil (( before i upset anyone this is my opinion only)) i have found that northern people are much more friendly and make you much more welcome than southern people and the way i feel now i would not mind moving there myself. The last couple of years in Liverpool there has been a lot of improvement lots and lots of new places ,shops etc..
they may make decent chips but all bonus points are lost when they bung mayo on them!!!!!
So many things you can ask for to have with it.
Ketchup is available too!! (have seen it myself at the HMH!!)

Can't see me living down south, whoever came up with this rubbish really need's to take a reality check. The south is more like another country, too many different nationality's and i would say the real England is right here up north!

I used to live in London but now I'm about as far south as you can get in Southampton. Imo the chips in London are much better but the people are less friendly and I would class London on its own - I never really thought of it as south but thats just me ;)

that's because if you're in southampton, london is north ;)
it's south to us good old northerners ;)

 So the plan is to move everyone from the North to the South?
So the entire population of the country can live in an area less than half the size of the country?
If the situation is as bad as this "think tank" suggests, then the solution they propose is nothing short of internal immigration :wtf:
There are those in the country who have a problem with immigration as it is without us "emmergrating" to our own country  .
What would the result of this be?
The southerners living in the south, sharing the south with foreign immigrants, and now sharing the south with the northerners.
And this will make things better how exactly?
Land up north will be cheaper because there is nobody there, but the price of land in the south will sky rocket.
Property prices in London are already laughable, but if a mass migration like this was to occur then only the very wealthy would be able to afford to buy their own homes.
A much smaller country with far more people.
I think this think tank has a few leaks
Companies being forced to employ foreigners is a load of bollocks :shit:
Companies employ foreign labor for one of two reasons, because they can screw the system by paying them less than minimum wage, or so they can work harder.
You might wonder what I mean by work people harder.
Let me clarify.
Whereas British workers are more inclined to slack, right or wrong, his Polish (for example) counterpart is a much more valued company asset.
The British worker may be happy to send private e mails from work, even read a forum (hello to all you skivving ba$^ards reading this from work  :p ).
The British worker might be happy to take as many loo breaks as wanted during the working day.
The British worker might be happy to go outside and have a fag.
To linger over dinner and get back to work 5 mins late.
Now let's look at our immigrant friend who knows his worth is only what he gets done in a day and that he can be replaced very easily and with as much regret as the manager blowing his nose.
If at a computer, it's work related.
Need a pee? hold it in.
Back late from lunch? not when he's back half an hour early from lunch every day.
Want a ciggie? Save it for the pub after work, oh hang on.... Just quit instead then.
Companies employ immigrants because they are harder workers for cheaper money (sort of legalised slaves) nothing else, so claiming it's because of the north doesn't make a great deal of sense
Especially when there are firms here in the north doing exactly the same thing.Might account for some of that 26% unemployment huh
You might argue that this being the case that the British worker is at fault and deserves to lose their jobs for being lazy and not working as hard, but who among us has never swung the lead instead of giving 110% every moment?
The British worker may be lazier than his counterpart, but we have worked damn hard so we would never be slaves, and we have never worked as slaves either.

The south is more like another country, too many different nationality's and i would say the real England is right here up north!
It depends what you class as 'real England' as some would argue Bradford isn't 'real England' and that's up north.
 So the plan is to move everyone from the North to the South?

I don't think the plan was to move everyone just to move the lazy ones who can't be arsed to get a job to move South and take up the jobs the immigrants are doing down South. That then would solve Geordieloaf's argument of too many different nationalities in south and then you'd make ALL of England the real England.
In a way it makes perfect sense.

So isn't there lazy people down south that don't work? I'm sure there are in which case give them the job's that other Nationalities are currently doing down there. Then it would free up more space for us Northerners to move in with are whippet's, flat caps and peas pudding!:-)

17 Aug 2008, 03:12
There's probably more lazy arses sponging off handouts in the North than there are in the South and I'm originally from Yorkshire, so no one can accuse me of being racist towards Northerners :))
Liverpool for example has 26% living off handouts (apparently) I don't know what the poplulation is of Liverpool, but that's a hell of a lot cashing their Giro's each week. Bradford has an high unemployment rate and that's a shithole, I'm originally from Brighouse a few miles away so I know what I'm talking about. And don't forget Dewsbury, think of the Shannon Matthews family, Christ almighty  you get the picture.
Whether moving South is a practical idea or not (it would lower the house prices in the South that's for sure :lmao:) it has certain merits in getting people who do sponge off the state to move South and get a job, or at least get them working for their dole.
Pud

17 Aug 2008, 03:26
To be honest i don't know the figures for unemployment through out the country. Yes there are alot of shitholes in the north, like wise there are plenty down south. What pisses me off is these knob heads from down south who assume that people up north would love the chance to move down south where everthing is so much better!
I have been all over the country, and i would say imo that London (not the tourist places) is the dirtiest most unfreindly city i have been to.
I'm not anti-south i just don't like the way they treat us northerners with such contempt. Your right Bradford is a shithole, i have a friend who was brought up there and moved away as soon as he was old enough.
Battybarb
17 Aug 2008, 03:43
I agree Bradford is a shithole, which is up north, but you are also right go to plces down south e.g.places like Woolwich, which now is a total p**s hole must have 1000 different nationalities all on the dole ,not safe to walk round during the day let alone night time, there are plenty of other places down here that are becoming like that.
On the whole i find northern people to be much friendlier than southern people...thats talking from experience..coming from a southerners mouth...lol

Exactly, i have long believed that there is a job for everyone, not neccessarily what you WANT to do for a living but if you want to work then there is always something, even if its cleaning toilets or something else you didnt imagine yourself doing.
There are always alot of pro's and cons for living anywhere....nowhere is perfect...could i see myself living up north right now?? Well no, not right now but i'll never say never and i will go wherever i think my children are best placed, if i had a choice right now, i would go back to hertfordshire...it was a pretty happy medium as far as quality of life goes

Quite so. Any argument from those on the dole that there's no work was completely demolished when hordes of Poles marched in and took up the jobs that were available. I'm all for taking away dole payments from those who can work but choose not to bother.

Thats exactly what my low life bro needs, he was supposed to start an all expenses paid painting/decorating course last week(courtesy of new deal), only to decide on the day it started that he couldnt be bothered to go  wish i had half the opportunities that boy has had thru his life, just a lazy little shite i'm ashamed to say.
I haven't really read the article, however this did crop up recently on another forum.
I'm living in London at the moment, which is a bit of a dream for me really, and still is to a point. However, no matter how the statistics show up the north and it's people, it remains to be my favourite part of the country, warts and all! Give me Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire anyday! I don't quite know what it is, but the south is almost like a foreign country to Northerners, certainly in London at least. Everyone seems to have a different language and a different sense of humour in london...they just don't get the northern thing.
I love everything about the north, it's history, it's music, it's culture, the scenery, the cities and the coasts. You'll never get me living down south long term, no matter how lovely it is.
And without being biased, Grimsby is the only place in the UK to do decent fish and chips! Everywhere else is terrible :P!

At the very least I believe they should send these lazy sods into the military to get a bit of discipline, excerise and self-respect and to give back what they're willingly taking.

I grew up up North (in fact in Cumbria, as North as you can get without being Scottish, perish the thought...) and now live in Yorkshire. I have had regular opportunities to travel to London through personal life and work, and would never live down there. It's a decent night out, and yes London never sleeps whereas York seems to shut at 6pm, but it's as if you were in another country! And without a doubt, northerners are more friendly. And also more honest - they'll let you know if you pi$$ them off, but they'll also watch your back! And best fish & chips??? Bridlington, without a shadow of a doubt!

Ahhh someones after my own heart! Northerners are more friendly, but i think it's to other northerners. Before I broke up from uni, I was talking to a girl on my course who's from Kent and she was explaining reasons why she was gonna leave and go back to Kent and she made the point that to her northerners are only friendly to other northerners. For me it's not true, i'm friendly to everyone (when it suits me :P) but i dont think theres sometimes a bit of a social block between strangers if they're from the north and south. I find it easier to start a convo with a stranger whose northern than a stranger who's southern. Don't know why but it's true.

If you share crisps with a child you're looked at as a freak or a paedophile and if you share crisps with an adult you're looked at as a freak or a terrorist suspect. Best thing to do in london is keep to yourself. It's a nice place if you want to not be noticed.

You're all wrong!! Best Fish and Chips are from White Cross, Guiseley.
As a Northerner who's lived all over the country in the last 20 years, there's only one place south of the Humber (the true North/South dividing line) that I'd move back to and that's Dorset. Other than that if it's not North Yorkshire then anywhere else is really second best (even Cheshire where I am at the moment).
I'm a firm beleiver in the Tebbit philosophy though. Every time I've moved around the country it's been for work, if there's not been anything suitable where I've lived, then it's pack the bags get on my bike and move to where the work is. I've never been out of work and if it's been threatened I've bene ready with e next job before the previous one has ended, despite the fact I'm writing this from the office .. grafting is the only way!
Shifting away from the point slightly, the thing that really grates me with these stories on the national news (broadcast from London) is the Southern definition of 'North'...Andy and I, who are both from the north, saw the headline on TV and watched for the story expecting to see Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough...and the story was based on Liverpool, which to me isn't the north at all, it's almost 3 hours south of my Mum's house in the north east.
Seems to me that anywhere north of Birmingham is deemed 'North' :?

North to me is anywhere below scotland and above sheffield really.....Nottinghamshire up to Cambridge area is midlands and the everything below is the south or the west country.
It's interesting how people have their idea's of the devides. I know many people who consider nottingham and derby as sort of north. Is there any official right or wrong divide?

Who pays for these think tanks? If I have even contributed just a penny through my taxes to this shit I would like my money back. This propaganda is useless and very insulting towards parts of the UK. I can't understand how they can get away with spewing out this garbage.
Same I saw a little bit of this "Secret Millionaire" program on Channel 4 (used to be a good channel which has now turned into propaganda rubbish). They basically made out Glasgow being a hell hole and that this secret millionaire would save the city. Utter bollocks and there have been people from Glasgow who have made way more money than that "secret millionaire".
Think Tank? They should call it Shit Tank.
There's rubbish places all over the UK, they are not just confined to this mysterious northern area imo. Teenage stabbings have been headlines in London. Surely that can't be a very attractive reason to move south no matter how bleak the picture up north would be according to a shit tank. I know these killings are just a drop in the ocean, however it does clearly prove the inconsistency of all this media scare mungering which is just ridiculous. On one hand the media tells us everything "up north" (where-ever that may be) is shit and you should move south and on the other it tells us every teenager in London carries a knife. Cheers for that Rupert Murdoch, now please feck off.

The fact that nobody has replied to you as to where the best fish & chips are in London is because there aren't any decent fish & chips in London. You'd be better off eating a decomposed rat from the London underground then deep frying it.

there is decent fish and chips in London! Well I don't know about central London but we went to two different chipies in the suburbs when we lived there. Both were run by Italians... Yet in Rome there were no fish and chips to be seen...
