I used to think that the Meat Loaf writing was something that came up while BOOH was produced, to help the baroque/larger than life image. But a similar writing is also used on Stoney & ML. So who came up with this?
And is there any copyright to it? I always thought there was, but how could it have been used between all the different labels and record companies from 1971 (Stoney) to 2008 (3 Bats live)?
Isn't it the case that it's a copyright/trademark of the mixture of the font and that the the words "Meat Loaf" are completely indistinguishably linked with Meat Loaf himself. So, it's effectively his own copyright/trademark which is therefore transferable between whichever record company he's dealing with.
In the same way that the Rolling Stones tongue logo is identifiable as belonging to the Stones.

Doubt the font/type face/writing whatever itself can be coyrighted as it appears to be "Bradley Gratis", downloadable from the net. Therefore if you were to change just one letter as in the case of Maet Loaf you cannot complain about coyright, at least it would become a lot more difficult.
However as you know who had a dispute with Meat about his van that seemed fair to me as he did have "Meat Loaf" on it and was parading it around the Liverpool gig in the VIP parking area in 2005 (NOT 2007 as what was claimed in a news paper article).
On ticket stubs it clearly states you cannot advertise towards the public attending the gig (no flyers, cds you can give out), so in effect this was a rightful action on Meat's part imo considering the writing on the van.

There's a believe a font which you can download - don't ask me where now, but I had it sometime ago before my old PC crashed which was the same writing as Meat's Logo...
But as we've seen from a tribute already (not naming anyone) - you have to have permission to use the logo and the words "MeatLoaf" on your whatever - right, hint: campervan/tour bus thingy.
Hence he had to get rid of it.... SO I guess it wil be copyrighted and that you have to have permission.
Thats my understanding of this anyways :-)
I don't think that word "meatloaf" is copyrighted - not entirely possible since it's a dinner dish...otherwise, can't tell...
Try looking here (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6337)
Or using this (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/search.php) :))
I have a question...my understanding was that it was a specially made font and even though there are other similar ones there are none that are identical and therefore it cannot be used due to copyright, so what about people who have a tattoo of the ML logo? Does that come under some kind of 'personal use' because it's not being used to make profit or anything?

Nope it all belongs to Meat so the skin has to be shreaded off your body immediately and be sent to Meat via FedEx asap. :))
He said in one of the M&Gs that he "doesn't do skin" so I think people will be fine! :p
Doubt the font/type face/writing whatever itself can be coyrighted as it appears to be "Bradley Gratis", downloadable from the net. Copyright and free availability are two completely different things.
Meat Loaf written using "Bradley Gratis" comes very close, but there still are some more ore less subtle differences ...

 Would seem so.
BBIS and Meat Loaf Live both had his name in the non gothic script.

I guess the gothic font on bat2 should symbolize a 'going back to the roots' of BOOH, same with the frilly shirt, etc.
and just like the Loaf also the font had been slimmed down :D

Actually, to nitpick, the typeface used on Midnight is not even remotely gothic (or more precisely, blackletter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackletter)). It's just a serif like Georgia or Times (New Roman).
