Top 5 underrated songs by Mr. Loaf
Meatloaf450_42106c Everyone knows the hits from Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, but are those the only tasty morsels from Meat Loaf?
Those are just the appetizers, insists uber-fan Sherrie Williams of Largo. "If you go to Meat Loaf's show at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall this Friday," she says, "you may hear one or two of these gems if you hit a lucky night on the set list."
TOP 5 MOST UNDERRATED MEAT LOAF SONGS:
(Commentary by the Sher-meister herself)
5. COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF (2003): The title track from the most recent non-Bat out of Hell studio album features frequent Meat Loaf partner Patti Russo in a bombastic duet. "I will take your body language and hold it against you tonight." [Listen]
4. TESTIFY (2003): This gospel- and blues-tinged tale of a strung-out trucker who finds redemption at a roadside revival features audio clips from the 1986 Ralph Macchio film Crossroads. That's a sure sign of quality for '80s Nation, but this song will get you on your feet even without the benefit of the Karate Kid's blessing. "Could you be the salvation cause I never felt like this before. And, could you lend me your hand because I'm falling back on the floor."
3. I'D LIE FOR YOU (AND THAT'S THE TRUTH) (1995): I've always thought of this song as a lesser known companion to the monster hit I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That). It also features Patti Russo and is unfailingly lush, romantic and drama soaked -- everything a great Meat Loaf song should be. "I'd lie for you and that's the truth. Move mountains if you want me to. I'd walk across the fire for you. I'd walk on the wild for you. If you'd just believe in me"
2. BAD FOR GOOD (2006): This is a Jim Steinman penned song that didn't appear on a Meat Loaf album until 2006's Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose, but it has been performed by Meat Loaf across three decades. Classic Steinman lyrics, soaring guitars -- this song is quintessential Meat Loaf. (Plus, it's my ringtone on my cell phone so that should count for something, right?) "And you think that I'll be bad for just a little while. But I know that I'll be bad for good."
1. OUT OF THE FRYING PAN (AND INTO THE FIRE) (1993): This song is big and brash, just like Meat Loaf himself. It begins with a stuttering guitar solo, then simmers to a sensual, scorching climax. When preformed live, this song often includes pyro effects and is a highlight of the concert. It was released in 1993, but has been a staple of Meat Loaf's lives shows since the early '80s. "It's never been this hot and I've never been so bored, and breathing is just no fun anymore. And then I saw you like a summer dream and you're the answer to every prayer that I ever said."

Isn't frying Pan from Bat II? Why list it? :|
lol i wish Meat performed BFG for three decades. Be interesting to hear that '78 ragged voice of his singing that number :D
Dont know about you but his 78 ragged voice wasn't half bad nore distracting.
great article :D
SIDE NOTE:
my opinion on the top 5 underrated ML songs. Don't consider WTTN or BOOH 1 or 2 because they were very successful and nothing on the very best of:
Masculine
Read 'Em and Weep
Piece Of The Action
I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us
Execution Day
Runners Up:Jumping the Gun, Burning Down, and Nowhere Fast

Do we know Sherrie Williams of Largo?
for a so called 'expert' they're are quite a few mistakes in that article.

Bad for Good should definately appear ... it's also in a very prominent place on my running playlist (last track for a 10km run!) I think it's a great song. Plus when you're running, the line "If it's something I want then it's something I need, I wasn't built for comfort I was built for speed" is great at the 50 minute point!

For that matter, Frying Pan is also on my play list (it's not all Meat songs btw...there's quiet some embarrassingly terrible stuff on there too!!) and I'd never have thought of that song as being underrated really

2. BAD FOR GOOD (2006):
1. OUT OF THE FRYING PAN (AND INTO THE FIRE) (1993):
I don't think you'd have to be lucky to hear those two.
My top 5 not so popular Meat Loaf tracks:
Sailor to a Siren
Burning Down
Do It!
Lost Love (Midnight outtake, B-side on the If You Really Want To 12")
Presence of the Lord (Blind Faith cover, MTYD73 B-side)
Evil One

Out of the frying pan is possibly my favourite Meat song - but I love all of them really - just go mad everytime I hear OOTFP. Co-incidentally - I want my ashes (when one pops one's clogs) to be put in fireworks and set off to OOTFP. Thats not sacralige is it? lol

i think of the "gems" you'll definitely only here Bad For Good and Frying Pan
As for gems (and her article just comes across as annoying to me, don't really know why)
Did I say That
Testify
Decadent Wish
Original Sin
and Sailor to a siren
I expect to hear none of the above in future Sir Loaf concerts.

Well they don't get performed anymore at concerts and you don't hear them on the radio. So it depends what you class as underrated.

modern girl is on the radio over here quite a lot. Probably third-most played after AFL and took the words.

I can't base my opinion on what goes off in your country, if I did that then I'd eat pickled cabbage and wear leather shorts daily :))

Maybe there is and maybe there isn't but I thought it was a personal choice where there is no right and there is no wrong? You have the right to agree or disagree but they are my choices and I'm sticking with them ;)

Have to correct me, I'm pretty sure took the words gets played more often than AFL.

Well over here Took the Words, 2 outta 3, and Paradise are Common as heck (in that order of greatest to least).
AFL is sorta common
BOOH is F'n rare (Never heard the radio edit)
I can't even start the list...nor finish it with only 5 songs...

It's funny, in every country you have different ML hits, the songs EVERYONE over here knows are Took the Words and AFL, people who are at least interested in rock music a little know Rock n Roll Dreams, Modern Girl and maybe Dead Ringer for Love.
Evil One

In the UK it tends to be Bat, YTTW, 2OO3, Dead Ringer, AFL and rarely ILFY. Radio 2 listeners may occasionally get No Matter What.
In US common folk would probably - maybe - remember Paradise and AFL...

Also radio 2 play Heaven can wait now and again. Local station up here plays bat (Radio edit) dead ringer, took the words, Two out of three and occasionally AFL.
Which considering i think is pretty good as he dosent get much radio play. The localation station i am on about (magic) play Meat just about everyday so can't be bad!
