I agree to an extent about Imagine. But then I've found most Beatles music really not that interesting unless it is performed by great singers.
They laid down the foundation of rock/modern day pop and wrote AMAZING songs. I cannot deny that. But for example if I listen to "With a little help from my friends" by the Beatles:

Tina's renditions sends shivers down my spine and she really brings the words to life.

I know it is usually much easier to copy and improve on something that already exists but I really do think Beatles as performers were always overhyped.

Same goes for "Imagine"; great song, uninteresting performance by John Lennon. Last week that 16 year old Irish boy did it on X Factor and I thought it was one of the most boring renditions and most boring X Factor performances EVER (even though it lasted 90 seconds or so)!. I cannot believe that an artist like that would sell millions of records whilst there are countless of 16 year old boys who can sing like that. Tell the truth Simon!

I love tina's version of help, really soulful really enjoyed it. As for the beatles Lennon etc i think you have to give them respect for what they achieved, simple catchy songs. The later stuff i thought was better, and Lennon did some great stuff on his own!

I agree with Neil, musically imagine is boring and overhyped, BUT you have to keep in mind the times it was released. Today youve got songs about pacifism and freedom all over the place, but I can imagine (lol) that back then especially the lyrics had much more of an impact.

Christ, listen to "give peace a chance", to me one of the most boring Lennon/Beatles songs ever, but it became a hit because of it's message.
Btw, rumour has it Lennon and all his friends once met at a hotelroom, wanting to play this song, but they didnt have any instruments with them. So they took all kinds of stuff from the hotel room, phonebooks, etc to substitute the instruments, and apparently John liked it that much, that he kept it for the recording.

I personally think the Beatles wrote (and performed!) some truly amazing tracks, but I'm more a fan of the McCartney-penned stuff, John Lennon and his music have always been a little....weird to me.

Joe Cocker is the king of the covers.
He has completely his own style.
After his hit with "Friends", The Beatles sent him a telegram telling him that his version was much better.
(bit of trivia, Joe came up with the idea for the arrangement for Friends while sitting on his dad's outside toilet in Sheffield.He must have very tuneful farts :wtf: )
