well they did mention mainly well known, successful songs, so that kinda rules out the meaty ones :-)

 I'd Lie For You And That's The Truth?

Got to number 2 in the singles charts?

The thing I find weird is that it's an AMERICAN songwritter.

I thought the whole point of Eurovision was that the song was created by the nation it represents, well, OK, that and voting for people you want to be chums with

didnt they scrap the rules that the writer had to be from the country and the song in the country's language a few years ago, when it stopped being popular (again)?

The Flying Mouse

 I guess they must have, as last I looked, Diane Warren wasn't from Ellesmere Port, Bognor, or any other place that can be considered English soil.

I'm surprised at the changing of the rule though.

they try everything to increase the popularity of the contest. since the russians win every year hardly anyone is watching.

Don't know about the writer but you don't have to sing in your native language anymore. Don't know if the contest still makes any sense if the songs / writers / contestants don't come from the country they're supposed to represent.

I remember Celine Dion taking part in the contest some years ago. She sang for Switzerland.

some years ago? wasnt that in the 70s?

 It's a shame that America is not in Europe actually.
That way Tony Blair could have inserted himself up the Presedents ass by voting for Americas song.
As it was, that wasn't an option so he had to get us involved in one middle eastern war after the other  .

So consider yourself lucky.
All your country needs to do to kiss ass is vote for a dodgy song.
We have to send our chaps somewhere hot so the American military can pepper them with friendly fire

You're almost right. It was in 1988. I even found a German version of the song:

I am sorry - wasn't following this since I've left Europe...here it doesn't appear to get a lot of publicity...unfortunately (?)

But how did Celine Dion represent Switzerland????

And I agree that every country should be represented by the native with the song in the native language written by the native songwriter...

Also...how is Russia winning every year??? They have pretty awful songs in general...dear and near only to Russians???

Just read article...composer is still British...maybe he chose her lyrics for his music???

 Russia has two things.
Crap songs and shit loads of oil.

As long as you have plenty of the later, the former can be overlooked and you get to win.

Eurovision is nothing more or less than a political ass kissing convention set to music.

 Funny enough, here's what Chris had to say on the matter in 2006.........

I posted this comment on here, way back in 2004 and then repeated it in 2005 and both years i was correct.

So here are my voting predictions:

Greece won't vote for Turkey
nor will Germany vote for Austria (incidentally the German song will probably be about Love, Peace or Harmony!!)
Norway will vote for Sweden but this won't be reciprocated
The UK will vote for Malta
France won't vote for the UK
Cyprus will give Greece 12 points - and make a token gesture of a few points for Turkey
At least one country will try to make a political statement (rip off black clothes to reveal white ones underneath or similar)
And finally, The great God of Commentators that is Our Beloved And Gracious Leader Wogan (King Of TOG's) will announce which act he likes who will then come pitifully low!!

I suspect he was right in 2006, and in 2007, 2008, and will be in 2009.

Some things never change

Mid-May-ish usually I think?

And just to put my two-penneth in, I think Eurovision Song Contest is nothing about music except maybe to a couple of countries. It's political ass-kissing and each country taking part provides a song by way of entertainment. The way things are at the moment, England hasn't a chance of winning!

Edit: Despite that....I still love it!

I agree with you Helen ... but I think it's always been that way for as long as I can remember ... and that's quite a long time!

You're not missing anything. If at least the music was interesting but most of the time it's just torture. :wtf: There was only one band at last year's contest I liked (some long-haired heavy metal guys from Finland), most of the other performances were boring or annoying. It's a big disadvantage that they don't have to sing in their native language anymore (at least those Fins did) because now I understand the lyrics (unfortunately).

Something from the good old days ;):
