I am a perfectionist. If i'm gonna have fun then I have to make sure everything is perfect, vis, toilet run.... and when wembley is packed full the girls get full first!

I remember on the way home I was on the train there was this older woman and another woman and I made them laugh all the way home... and the rest of the train... either that or i generally freaked them out....

I personally don't think its strange. I don't understand why people are stopping others from seeing their children. Its a serious flaw in the law, if you're parents weren't married at the time you were born, then if your mother doesn't want you to see your father you aren't going to see him. I don't see how that makes sense, anyone explain it to me?

Biter
14 Sep 2004, 18:49
I know what it's like Keb. My mum tried to stop me finding out about my dad to the extent of me having to call him at three in the morning and having to fly to Norway to meet him. I think that unless the father has done something extremely bad, all children should have the legal right to see their father. Ok, sometimes it is not good for the mother but the chances are that they have grown up with both their parents in a stable household. I know how fathers could be driven to do this because my dad was in the same position. As soon as my mum came out of the hospital after giving birth to me, she packed her bags and moved in with one of her friends. It took me thirteen years and a lot of begging on my part to find out what his name was. I tracked him down using the internet and a letter I found by accident. When mum found out that I was in contact with him, she went mad and almost threw me out (again...). A lot of the judges who give custody to the mother don't think about whether the child wants to only see his/her father for a few hours a week. I really regret not being more persistent and finding out about him sooner because he has become a very good friend to me, wheras my mum acts like he doesnt exist even though she loved him at one time.

Aw crap. yet again I've been rambling.

KebLou
14 Sep 2004, 22:51
Yeah, its exactly my point. My step brother only got to see his real dad because his grandma went behind his mums back and got in contact with his dad. I think thats wrong, but then again I would as shes trying to inflict her beliefs on me. Although I don't think custody should automatically go to the mother. My mum is holding on to parental rights for me, as long as she can (not for long now) and it means that I can do very little without her consent, which I get the blame for when my dads in one of his moods.

Pixie
15 Sep 2004, 09:24
I can understand where you're coming from Keb and Biter, but I'm a Family Law Barrister and the father is able at any time to take the matter to court. OK, finance is ususally the major barrier (although anyone who can't afford the costs can get Legal Aid), but Judges are even more determined these days to make sure the children have a relationship with the father if that's what they want, and there is no serious abuse going on. The days are gone where the mother can withhold the child/children - that is called implacable hostility and looked upon by the court as a serious misdemeanour by the 'caring parent'. I've even seen a Judge send a mother to jail for it. Unfortunately there are all sorts of cases where the mother and father are fighting so much that all sorts of allegations against each other are made...

The problem with Fathers For Justice is that I don't think they're very good examples - Jason Hatch has been proven to be a bigotted, ignorant, attention-seeking individual. The court has made a decision that he should only see his children once every three weeks and you can bet your bottom dollar that they had very good reasons for doing so. The courts deal with these things on an individual basis, but unless the father uses the right channel and raises the issue with the court in the first place, the mother will have 'control' until the children get older. It's therefore his decision. A lot of fathers either give up and walk away before that stage, or make a decision to start a new life without their children from the first relationship. That's very hard on the children isn't it?

I've not got any axe to grind here, just putting the other side of the story forward really. I only wish parents would see what harm they are causing their children by refusing to be reasonable in the face of all the evidence that it's better for the children to have a relationship with mother AND father unless there are serious reasons why not...

Biter
15 Sep 2004, 14:25
My dad tried to get visits and they threw his case out of the court because he wasn't married to my mum. But I know what you mean about fathers 4 justice. They should protest in a safer way and be a bit quieter about it.

Pixie
15 Sep 2004, 14:32
If the parents separate when they aren't married, the father has to go to court to get a Parental Responsibility order, which gives him the same Parental rights as the mother. These days a DNA test is usually done to make sure the man really is the father, but if the mother protests, a PR order is usually granted anyway - it's a quick, pretty cheap thing to do. After that, because the father has parental rights, they can then go to court and are ENTITLED to contact with the children. Maybe your dad didn't know about this? Hope you're close now anyway...

15 Sep 2004, 17:22
As a child myself and two siblings in trouble for exactly this, i say good for this boke. A man shold not be able to see their child if they are a danger, and same as mother. But if done out of spite, then its terrible.

Biter
15 Sep 2004, 18:36
Not under Norwegian law though Pixie. I was born somewhere in Bergen and their local law doesn't let unmarried fathers do anything. When we moved to england six months after I was born, he was told that if he tried to make contact with me again, he would be "taken care of". I think all of this is wrong. There's only a six billion to one chance that he isn't my dad and I am a bit bitter that I was forbidden to see him. Even now, i have to creep around if I do want to see him.

But I do agree with airhead. If a father does become abusive to either the mother or the children, he shouldn't be allowed to see them that often. Domestic violence is one of the worst crimes in the world in my opinion because it just gets worse with time and the scars are always there for the victim.

Well. Rant over :x Going back to my padded sanctuary now...
