Brian May has more to say...

"I also ought to mention that the MEAT LOAF tracks, produced by the highly talented Rob Cavallo, are sounding amazing. It could almost have been Bat Out of Hell 4, of course, but I think Meat is beyond that now ... some of these tracks are huge ... and feature some unusual writing talents, including the amazing Justin Hawkins ... it's ... well not describable, but I can't wait to hear how it all turns out. My great friends, amazing axe man Paul Crook and John "The Mighty" Miceli on drums also feature on the record .. along with some absolutely top class guys who work with Rob. It will definitely rock. Oh ... and there's a swift interjection from yours truly on a 6-minute epic whose title has to remain under wraps for now. As if you needed a reason to buy this new epic !!"

Re: Hugh Laurie; I wonder three.

I am far flung with wonder. Wow!

My life goes on, smartasses ;) babybat and I are expecting a baby late December, early January. Wow!

Anthony

Congrats!!!

It means all the different instuments and vocals have been recorded, they just need fitting together properly and the sound tweaking, this is the bit where the producer earns their pay :-D the songs sound very very coarse right now and little mistakes might show.

Well Adam Lambert was also there also recording, and i reckon he would be singing the kind of songs she writes so might have just been a coincidence.

Thank you for your response bobbin. I may add about Lambert, he's due to release something in October and he's recorded for the movie 2012. I'm thinking that is Cavallo's productions. Not necessarily Meat involvement. Maybe Meat was singing with Lambert for Lambert's stuff.

The writers that may have been involved but not mentioned I'm sure will get a mention at the Grammy's. LOL! Why not aim big?

Just to reiterate, this whole project has had me wondering. To name a few: Album title? Cover art? The artist who's doing that? Are the tweets going to end soon as they near completion of the studio work? :( Oh this can of worms has me on overdrive.

A long Twitter with lots of info.
7 weeks of tracking...15 songs done, lots of writers on this album.
Some potential song titles: "If it's raining...", "If I can't Find You"
Not sure I got all these names right:
James Michael
Rick Brantley
Greg Bekker
Kevin Curtis
Jon Bon Jovi
Tom Handbridge
Shawn Mcconnell
Jaron Johnston
Kara Dioguardi (such a honey ;-) )

Suppossed to be a double/triple album??? Meat is probably mocking us... :))

Sounds great none the less!

Oh ehh... almost forgot... Get well soon Meat!

Meat didn't mention Diane Warren. Wasn't she in one of the Twitter videos? I'm not usually a fan of her songs, but "I'd Lie For You" was a nice surprise.

18 Aug 2009, 22:43
Rob Cavallo is a record producer who'll have several fingers in several pies all at once, just because you saw Adam Lambert doesn't mean he has anything to do with Meats album. Equally though I didn't hear Justin Hawkins name mentioned.

i never once said Adam lambert had anything to do with Meat's album , in fact i would bet a whole lotta money that he hasnt. What i meant by the fact that he was there, is he was there recording his own album, plus the songs for the 2012 film, not sure if john was the only reason Lambert was there same time as meat but john did the drumming on Lamberts tracks for the film, which is why i suggested that Dian Warren may have been there for Lambert too and not Meat.

i apologise for not wording it properly this morning lol my fault for posting before rushing out the door :p

"Cry Over Me" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard about lost love.

The lyrics are powerful and Meat brings so much emotion in it that you can identify yourself with him. He sings it like a man who will never recover from loosing the love of his wife and will endure endless despair until death finally release him from a life he can't bear anymore.

I think that Diane Warren found the appropriate words to express the feelings of someone whose heart has been broken for ever.

I'd like to know who decided who will contribute songs to the album and why. It's an interesting mixture of people who have been in the music biz for a while and younger folks. Since Meat seems to have difficulties to recall the names of some of the songwriters who are involved I assume they weren't chosen by him. (?)

Logical, yes, but some months ago he spoke of "the rock album I always wanted to make". Of course you can leave everything to a producer or whoever and I don't know what's really going on behind the scenes but I don't expect him to be the kind of singer who just lets someone buy and compile a couple of songs for him. There are people who are just singers and there are artists. ;)

I think it's the situation that Meat has an image in his mind of what the album should sound like, and RC does all the technical stuff, chosing songwriters, etc
The fact that Rob Cavallo takes care of the production doesnt mean Meat has no influence.

And personally speaking, I'd rather see him give the job to someone really good, than doing half the job himself. The two albums with his biggest involvement (MATLAF and BBIS) are his weakest (IMO).

I agree with this scenario. Imo, Meat is the visionary and Rob is the one that goes...I have a guy/or gal for that! Happens to be that the chosen people are song writers/artist so they are multitasking. Doesn't mean that Meat can remember their names any better.

That's not what I intended to say, I'm just a little surprised. If I was suggested to record a cool song by someone whom I (maybe?) haven't heard of before or whom I don't know much about I'd get interested and do some research and would definitely remember that person's name. But I have to admit that "D'Artagnan" sounds much cooler than "Eric Nally". :p

And personally speaking, I'd rather see him give the job to someone really good, than doing half the job himself.

I don't doubt that Mr. Cavallo is very good and I'm not going to discuss his abilities as a producer. I just expected that Meat was a little more involved in certain issues, especially since recent interviews imply that he's going to create something special.

The two albums with his biggest involvement (MATLAF and BBIS) are his weakest (IMO).

They may be "weak" but they are not bad. Those albums were victims of time and circumstance. BBIS was apparently spoiled by Frank Farian's production, in my opinion. And although Meat Loaf has claimed several times that he can't write songs, I dare to say that the few songs he wrote himself are better than some of the songs that were written for him by others.

I just think we aren't privy to the thought process itself. We don't know what research Meat has done on these writers. Meat and Rob collaborated on this project well before Meat's tweets. If Meat was looking for suggestions for talent, Meat would have the faith in Rob to bring in the talent for the project. As far as remembering, has he ever remembered multiple names during his tweets? Probably why he has groups introduce themselves on his tweets. I don't blame him. Personally, I'm great with faces, bad with names. I just find that he's not reading off of cue cards and he's doing it off the cuff which makes it charming and less staged.

But agreed, D'Artagnan is a cool nickname.

3 cds though? Really? Wow! A whole new trilogy!

I find them all interesting and enjoyable. It's interesting to be introduced to others involved in the album in a more personal way and very interesting to hear/see other work Meat's involved in, like Ghosthunters and the Breast Cancer charity. More importantly, it's been terrific to see how much he seems to be enjoying the recording process this time, and to enjoy his sense of fun via a method of keeping in touch which offers so much more than a quick note typed on a forum.

To me they're all entertaining, personal and hugely enjoyable .. and much more than the standard, short messages which are the more common form on Twitter. It's certainly good to hear about the album .. but I'm also happy to wait and enjoy it when it finally comes out. The "non-album related" tweets are as, if not to me even more, special and I too hope that Meat continues this very special way of keeping in touch with us.

The movie is coming up and I'm hoping I get the book in time to read it before next week. It should be here any day. Shhhh...I bought it from someone who I think didn't know the value of the book right now. It's not a book you can get at your local book store, it's out of circulation. However, it is due to be re-released. I was on the hunt for the book, but it was $50 US used. I found it for a fraction and I'm eager to receive it.

LOL - don't forget bangers and mash Pud.

Actually though, Britain does have some stunningly good restaurants these days. One thing I like about Britain is that you can get great food of any type (eg Italian, Indian, Chinese, and of course, British, and so on) as well as at any price. Eg a cheap and cheerful fry up in a greasy spoon can be as good as the finest steak in the most expensive restaurant.

I don't know if that's the same in too many places? I mean, we didn't see that many Chinese or Indian restaurants when we went to Italy! Probably is like that in places Britain invented, like the USA and Australia :raspberry::wacko:

The snippet that we got to hear made me excited to hear more. Meat was genuinely excited about sharing his vocal and I felt that energy when he was head bobbing and lip sync-ing along.

The snippet that we got to hear made me excited to hear more. Meat was genuinely excited about sharing his vocal and I felt that energy when he was head bobbing and lip sync-ing along.

I just feel lucky enough to have a listen before the CD is released, he has let the kids back in the studio for fun and another vocal (showing us apples). Let's not chase him away again.

I second that Suzieq :-)

Didn't think .. just closed my eyes, pictured him on stage .. and loved it :) .. and really looking forward to getting the album. Sounds terrific and exciting, and fantastic that Meat shares these clips with us .. and that he keeps in touch. He's relaxed, enjoying himself .. and with songs like that plus the NFL season started .. no wonder he looks chuffed :)

I don't think this album will be a "CHSIB 2" And that will be the last time I say "CHSIB 2" and it's because I don't know if you mean it's Pop-like quality. Or if you mean it's great song, good song, bad song ratio, which is a funny thought. Or if you're just referring it as a non concept record.

Meat has said it's going to be a rock record. For me genres mean nothing, but if I were to take a shot about this record. I believe the sound of this record will be like the last couple tours. A great sounding record with a whole new style of emotions and sounds.

I remember back in September '03, my anticipation for CHSIB was a roller coaster ride. Hearing all the samples rather obsessively gave me a feeling like I knew what the "ride" was about. Hearing the songs I basically lost my active listening. LOL It's back! ;) ;) heh

2006's 'The Monster Is Loose' the anticipation was a little different. Like many others, the idea of Jim and Meat together was awesome. I stop here, because I think everybody was on this same roller coaster. Or at least a similar One!!

I'm more stoked for this record than I have been for anything else in quite a long time. Self admittedly, I need a life ;) But rest assured, come 2010 I will be a full time daddy to a baby girl.

I know other people who suspect that it could become CHSIB II, too. I think (and I hope) it won't be like CHSIB. That album contained only a few rock songs but the music I've heard in the clips so far sounded like rock (although I'm sure they won't dare to do without one or two tearjerkers). Maybe it will be a better version of Welcome to the Neighborhood? I'm confident that Mr. Cavallo is doing a good job and will make it at least sound interesting. If Meat Loaf tried to rehash past hits, it would please some die-hard fans and a few nostalgic folks but others would yawn and the critics would probably write negative reviews again. No one expected a song like I'd Do Anything For Love in 1993, it surprised people. But this isn't 1993 and it would take a crazy genius like Jim Steinman ;) to provide Meat Loaf with a (new) "power ballad" that would not make him appear like an outdated copy of himself. Many of the "power ballads" of today sound like contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest - I think Meat Loaf deserves something better. Has anybody seen that ABC (?) interview in which he presented some of his favorite songs? He sang a few lines from 16 Tons and I thought "I'd like to hear him sing songs like that on stage".

Well, let's wait and see what the CD will really sound like. Maybe it's CHSIB II, maybe it will contain something for the "power ballad" lovers, maybe it will be Born To Run II or Physical Graffitti II. ;) Oh, no... wait, didn't he say it's gonna be Abbey Road II? :p

I think it's going to be a much more rock driven album than CHSIB - I can't see Rob Cavallo doing some sort of pop boy band pap.

I think that Meat Loaf sounds awesome in that clip, and let's not forget that it's been recorded on some sort of camcorder mic, then compressed, then streamed. I'm sure when we hear the actual track on CD (or very high quality MP3 :-)) it will be outstanding.

I think that this song sounds rather different from Meat's style, so I chose to listen to it several times before posting my opinion.

The music intro is great, in other words it rocks, and when I listen to it, I can see John on stage behind his drums.
The way Meat sings at first surprised me, maybe because he seems harder than usual and I'm less accustomed to that. One sure thing, his voice is powerful.

I will now wait to listen to this song on the cd as some of you already mentionned, it was recorded on a camcorder mic. So the final version will of course sound a little different.

Nobody said that Meat's music is perfect, which of course would be untrue as perfection doesn't exist and therefore can't be reached.
All of his songs are not equal in quality, that's obvious, and some people may love one particular song while others don't.

But an artist, and a man, who devotes himself to his work with so much passion, deserves the greatest respect.

FWIW, here's my melded-together version of a number of critical reviews (favourable and unfavourable) -

"The song titles alone would be enough to put most singers off. But Meat Loaf interprets, emotes, and inhabits them. Principal songwriter and all-round svengali is Jim Steinman, who has a penchant for orchestral flourishes, choral rhapsodies and wayward metaphors.
Think The Rocky Horror Show, combined with Vegas-Era Elvis, and what Wagner would have sounded like ~ if he had ever ridden around on a large motorbike, courting ladies in his favourite frilly shirt.
It's somehow beside the point to complain about the puerile lyrics, the leaden rhythms, the derivative melodies, the histrionic vocals, or the overblown arrangements. Steinman, and his co-conspirator Todd Rundgren, knew exactly how to push our soft-rock buttons, and, with Mister Loaf up at the front, they whacked those buttons with a sledgehammer.
Meat Loaf on a good day is uniquely hilarious: the epic rock hero consoling his lover with, "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad". The power of this human mountain is such that he can also shiver your timbers, booming out such nonsense seemingly with utter sincerity. You laugh till you cry ~ and then realise you were crying for real.
None of this would be funny, however, if Loaf were not so ridiculous-looking. He's decidedly roly-poly, unsteady on his pins, and struts the stage hollering randomly like a toddler in a tantrum. When he reaches for the high notes, you feel like chucking him a laxative. What you're really laughing at is neither his show-boating nor the tongue-twisting material: it's his unseemliness as a rock star.
And what's sad is not the melodrama of the songs, but that of Meat's own predicament. He's still on the scene today, still singing, or, more often, bellowing and wheezing his way through "All Revved Up" ~ whilst hunched over in a schoolboy's baseball jacket. At the end, he will beat his chest in glory. The joke's still on him: he's just making money out of letting people laugh at the lonely fat weirdo the song describes. It's completely preposterous ~ but oddly hard to dislike".

Shamedly, it's easy to find negative comment or damning with faint praise from members of the UK press, no doubt chortling at their self-perceived cleverness, some of whom clearly did not even bother to get themselves to the show they "reviewed" as they included songs which Meat didn't perform .. However this collection does include my favourite bizarre offering which included "The joke's still on him".

That after more than 30 years Meat continues to sell out 12-20K arenas whenever he tours, not just with baby boomers but with an audience of all ages ... who it's true laugh with him at the character he creates in Paradise, but are moved, excited, transported by every song he performs, and stand to cheer and whistle and beg him to return for more at the end of the show .. is I guess a phenomenon that our journalist critics find hard to understand; but any "joke" is on them as he lights another, now metaphorical, cigar.

So much easier to criticise than create .. but thankfully Meat still creates, still entertains magnificently, still enthralls with his performance. That's his enduring magic, and there's nothing "sad" about it at all. Many critics would be delighted, and lucky, to have his "predicament" of being a superstar, "still on the scene", and so enduringly successful and popular after so many years. Few people don't recognise his name .. how many know the names of the various critics who tear him down?

Now I know what an university degree in philology is good for, LOL. Texts like that are one of the reasons why I stopped reading magazines like Rolling Stone. Music is more a matter of the heart than of the intellect, in my opinion. You have to feel it. It's slightly different in the beginning but all in all it's the same, as far as I remember.

---

Edit: I just realized why the video on my DVD is a little different from the one on YouTube. The YouTube video was apparently made for the U.S. market since it says "Tenth Street Entertainment & Virgin Records Present". My DVD was released by Mercury, so it says "Tenth Street Entertainment & Mercury Music Group Present". It also lacks the cemetary scene with the gravestones in the intro. Aside from these minor differences it seems to be the same video.

By the way, on the 3 Bats Live DVD (Collector's Edition) Child's statement "Meat Loaf is a very complicated person" appears as a subtitle, too. I have neither seen that in the YouTube video nor on the Bat Out Of Hell III CD/DVD set.

I just find it strange because there is a video with Meat and Jennifer Hudson singing together. Why leave something actually special out on the DVD.

There are a couple of things that are strange about the Bat III promo. Don't know why Jennifer Hudson does not appear in the video. I actually don't remember her being mentioned at all when the album was promoted. :?

I have to admit, I've missed seeing the tweets this week. Hopefully he'll have lots to say when he resumes tweeting.

I haven't missed them. Not because I don't like them but because something that you get every day is not special anymore. ;) I usually appreciate new stuff more after a break.

Just wow. I couldn't disagree more when it comes to Meat's tweets. I consider any update special even though he's been consistently updating us almost daily. And I appreciate them greatly no matter when. I look forward to the end of my day to unwind and listen to what Meat had in store for the day. I guess I just enjoy the process to much and wonder what's coming next which has me looking for more tweets. I might add, Meat is also easy on the eyes of course.:flutter:

Bat 3 was promoted? I have must have been ill that day :-P

Anyhow, I'm loving the tweets, especially of course the song snippets, the more the merrier! I'm guessing they're aiming for a pre Christmas release - can't wait!
