Meat you should be very proud of the performance! Really loved it....you honestly sound great. Not sure if it was Live or maybe recorded and then slotted in at the end, unless they are very quick at getting the set on and off. Meat looked healthy, love to hear Bat sound differant.

It'll be on YouTube soon, and if it isn't I'll put it on rapidshare here.
IMO, amazingly good. I knew it would have to be an abridged/reworked version, but the orchestral and operatic approach was something else. I had thought 'why not do a song off the new album?' considering how much the new album seems to be trying to get away from the whole 'Meat Loaf is Bat Out Of Hell' thing, but having heard that arrangement and how it fit in with that show, I was thoroughly impressed.
Meat, if you read this, you blew me away for whatever that's worth. One minor gripe - your duet partner's mic should have been lowered a little, or yours turned up. But she was great all the same, and the arrangement was fresh and conducive to the song. A fresh coat of paint on a song that I and probably everyone else on this forum have heard hundreds of times. It worked. It was fantastic.
For the person complaining about the opera singer not being Patti...well, you answered your own question. This is a show about combining pop and opera. This arrangement did that. A straight reading of the Bat we've all seen on tour wouldn't have had any relevance to the show. I can understand purists not liking it but still...may as well complain that Pavarotti didn't sound like Rory Dodd when they did Heaven Can Wait together.
One last thing...flabbergasted that Kym and Marcella were knocked out. I thought they'd be in the final for sure.
Marcella was robbed!!!!
But I wasn't .. Meat. you looked and sounded fantastic !! It was very different, special. Great powerhouse finish! Thank you.

The arangement was something i woudnt want to hear all the time. However i think it fitted with the show theme. I thought it was a nice one off. I didnt see it as Bat out of hell as it was so differant. With that aside, Meat sounded on top form IMO.
I know meat was singing live but may have been shot as live earlier and then slot in the end unless they were very quick getting him on and off the stage.

It's an opera programme hence the opera singer. It's not like she'll be replacing Patti on the tour guys! Relax! I do think it would have been operatic enough (and better) with just Meat singing with that arrangement, but still thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Anyway, what's going to happen next week though (aside from Bernie winning)?! It'll be the last fix of Meat on TV here (that we know of) and then we have to wait exactly 2 months for the album!! It's gonna be tough!
At least there's still twitter

Alright, negative first:
I think the opera style voice of the girl didnt fit the song AT ALL.
now the good stuff:
After watching this, I seriously doubt those last years with the vocal problems ever occured.
Meat didnt just belt out the song like he did so frequently, he was actually vocally in control, yet had a power in his voice I havent heard in years.
Good thing that he took a new approach to the song, and didnt just run through the old routine the 4586th time.
The arrangement was interesting, reminded me of that Royal Philharmonic album from the nineties. He should definitely do a whole show with just him and an orchestra, that would be something interesting.
Lastly: Kudos to Mr. Loaf for actually competing vocally with a professionally trained opera singer.
He's good at what he does, but it takes A LOT to play on the same level as those people. He risked a lot when he went on stage with that girl, but he won 100%.
--> now off to pop in the MSO DVD. :D
F**king AMAZING Voice!!!

Fab performance. Well done Meat! :))
and long shall live the steinman as well!
I'm in agreement with those who thought Meat was great, but not so enthusiastic about the female singer. However, I did think it was a very clever (and different) arrangement. If the woman's microphone had been turned down a little, I think it would have sounded better.
and long shall live the steinman as well!
very true!!
Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman great on their own. But as a pair, is how they got my attention. They are two men who will stand the test of time. That's right, they are prime and will always have a place on top of the world shining behind them the light of heaven, or hell

I don't know if I'd call it a comeback .... but yes, Meat knew he nailed it :)
I loved how he hugged the woman who sang with him and then stood there with that sparkle in his eye and beautiful big grin on his face. It was great to see !
Ok thanks to everyone who posted their reviews prior to those of us being able to upload it in a timely manner (namely me). I couldn't wait until I was able to see it. And thank you for everyones links. Eventually I got one to come through. And I've watched it twice....and I don't know where to start.
I loved the slowed down version because I was able to appreciate every single sound Meat made. He nailed it, he knows he nailed it, and I soaked that up like a sponge.
He looks fantastic and polished. Wardrobe: pretty dope with the rock applique accents and "bling bling" (jewlery). I would love to get a close up shot of the back of his stage coat. Looks awesome.
And Meat's voice....OMG the voice: My heart jumped, it really did. To para-quote if you will: EFFING' YES!!!!! As far as the leading lady Juliet, I only found one part where I was like "what" but I sure can't do what she does or did so I have 0 to say about her. For certain, Meat was super pleased at the end of it, high fives all the way around.
Alan was even funny at the end of it saying something about people trying to go to sleep. Yeah, Meat celebrate after that one and while your at it, I think you just told those "rags" a big ole' "I told you so"!
Stupendous job,

Let me chime in here...
First off, I am very thankful for the wonderful people who have uploaded this performance to YouTube and even more thankful for Meat Loaf's management team for not having it yanked from it. I believe this is the perfect launch for Meat Loaf's upcoming project - Hang Cool, Teddy Bear 4. I am so excited to see the new direction Meat Loaf is taking.
Comments have been made about Meat Loaf being "crazy" lately...hell yeah he has been crazy lately. It is nice to see the off the chain and over the top Meat Loaf back in good form. It seems like we have not seen him this charasmatic since things started going back with the distribution of the album Couldn't Have Said It Better. I really do think that CHSIB was an exceptional album and Meat seemed to take it very personally when things were not going well with the record company and the ticket scams and rackets associated with it. Watching Meat Loaf during the promo of Bat Out Of Hell 3 was extremely painful to me. To me, it felt that Meat Loaf was being lead through the promo and decisions were being made by the record company - not himself. I know and love the character Meat Loaf, could see Mr. Aday putting on the act in public, but the heart and passion simply was not there. After all of the Bat 3 hype was over and now there is a project that Meat Loaf is working on that is "his" I can see the passion is back in his form. I believe that once again Marvin has completely transformed back into Meat Loaf and I love it!
The performance of the song was exceptional! I loved the new arrangement. Yes, the Bat out Of Hell purists would find fault with it, but for what it is...the performance was brilliant. This worked far better than the version that was on the MSO DVD/CD. It was nice to see a totally re-worked version of the song that actualy placed the song into the format of the project it was part of. Yes, the chicka singing along with Meat was a bit much, but that is part of the format of the show - it is what it is.
Bravo Meat! You did good!

I loved it I thought Meat sounded really good as ever but the thing that really struck me was he seems to have found the raw power in his voice again that he lost for a while.
I did think he struggled slightly but only with keeping the tempo down as well as reigning in the rock god that resides within. It really warmed my heart on the few albeit brief occasions when the Meat I love so much sneaked out and reassured us he was still there.
As if I needed any reasurrance after seeing Meat so happy in his tweets that HCTB will showcase Meat at his very best his performance and the few seconds of Losangeloser we hear on the updated version of Behind the music have done that and so much more.
shit!! if your not there he will probably cancel the tour!!

May I suggest to get a few body piercings and tattoos in addition?
It was a very good performance, although I'm usually not very fond of shortened versions of the song. I was a little confused by the lady at first but that wasn't her fault. When listening to it for the first time, that duet appeared rather funny to me and I felt as if her style of singing did not match the song - but maybe it's just that strange mix that made me like it after listening to it several times. I think it's one of the most interesting versions of that song. Meat's voice was amazing, it sounded growling at times and changed to Pavarotti style the very next moment.
May I suggest to get a few body piercings and tattoos in addition?

Dave
Perfectly stated. I agree 100%. Meat seems to be back with a vengeance after Bat 3 went the way it did. I think leaving the clip up online is a great move too. Yanking stuff off youtube to me is usually not a good move. I can't count how many songs I've bought after finding them on youtube. This performance will definitely boost interest in the new CD.

Absolutely fantastic performancs. I really enjoyed it, I've always wanted to hear BOOH opera style anyway and I wasn't disappointed and so thank you Meat and Juliet. Luv cx
Meat and Juliet did a fantastic job. If I had been in Meat's shoes I'd have been caught staring at her cleavage instead of her eyes :D. Meat's a true pro!!

As if I needed any reasurrance after seeing Meat so happy in his tweets that HCTB will showcase Meat at his very best his performance and the few seconds of Losangeloser we hear on the updated version of Behind the music have done that and so much more.
What makes you believe those seconds are from Los Angeloser??
Any link (besides the "Hollywood" street sign in the video)?

considering the partial tracklist (http://www.icwuk.co.uk/meatloaf/songdemos.html) and the lyrics in that clip it's more likely a snippet of "if it rains"
You can hear a few seconds of Los Angeloser in that clip, too, but it's just music, you don't hear him sing.

To be fair I think Meat's made it pretty plain that he doesn't generally like whole doctors/hospitals/needles ball of wax ... :-)
More relevantly to me, Meat has three broad styles; smart-but-comfortable-casual with colour, scrubs-up-well DJ black with a touch of sparkle, and performance-make-an-impact (but can be left with the wardrobe mistress) stage clothes, whether it's in concert or TV appearance .. and always he looks good because he chooses the appropriate style for the situation, and knows what styles work for him. His can wear those double-breasted, forties style suits and fedoras and look stunning, and the promo shots for CHSIB were superb!
No-one understands stagecraft and performance better than Meat, and I think the look, and the bling, was spot on .. he's also got a perfect sense of what will work for him and make a performance stand out. But you can't leave acquired piercings behind when you leave the stage and slip back into your real life, and I'd put the smart money on Meat being happy to stay with the ones God gave him ;).. He also doesn't show a lot of skin on stage ;).. so even temporary tattoos would have limited impact!

Bernie vs. Darius for the finals eh? Who's your pick?
As it should have been Marcella and Bernie in the final there's no contest .. Bernie. She's worked hard, developed each week, and has given a really good performance every week, some weeks outstanding. Darius simply hasn't. He's had only two good weeks, and has pretty consistently failed to get the operatic resonance into his singing, getting into the final with a mediocre performance vocally. This combined with some grovelling stuff about facing his fears .. something all the others did without complaining.
Bernie's good, she's enthusiastic, and she has a big following. She'd probably win even if Katherine stepped in and took Darius' place in the finals ;) .. but she also deserves to win. Until last week Marcella was the bookies favourite .. now the smart money's on Bernie :-)
Caryl

I would like to see Bernie win she's been consistent throughout. Btw has anybody got any news on the guest perfromer for this week?
Meat's fellow critic Lawrence has his own blog about the show here (http://www.classicfm.co.uk/music/pop-star-opera-star/view-critics-box/)
Here are some snippets which mention Mr Loaf ...
The atmosphere in the critic’s box last night was part play pen, part high brow judging panel, part Muppet Show.
I have decided that the Mighty Meat and I are indeed Waldorf and Statler
Katherine sparkled like an extraordinarily glamorous Welsh daffodil but I was extremely disappointed to find that despite her avid, energetic commitment last week that she failed to find the time to bake brownies for the critics box. Meat and I sat there in unsatisfied mouth-watering hunger because Dame Jenkins had mislaid her oven glove, still there’s hope for next week when perhaps Meat Loaf and I might get to experience her drop scones.
So onward and upward, week four comes into view and the entire production team and I have made a secret pact to ensure that Mighty Meatloaf is denied the blue smarties which we hope will mean that this week he stays in his seat.
At the end of the show when Rolando and Katherine have to scamper right the way round out lavish set to present the flowers to our loser it’s always a close run thing to get the glamorously-frocked mentors to the right place in time for their camera angel. This week Katherine needed a bit of a heave up or heave down to deal with the Critics Box step. All well and good and Mr Meat in gallant mode offered her his arm as she lunged at high speed towards the back of the box. This was gratefully received. Less gratefully received was that he inadvertently trapped the end of Katherine’s pink silk fish tale under his rock and roll biker boot. Dame Jenkins was very nearly de-frocked by Meatloaf!
Much more publicly there was the saga of Darius’ flies. As he very persuasively gave us his finest Figaro, I noticed a metallic glint from beneath the jacket of his bespoke Tom Baker suit. I hissed at Meat that I thought the seven-foot singing Scotsman was infact a flying low Scotsman. Of course Meat (like George Washington before him) can’t keep his gob shut and bellowed at Darius that he needed to check his fly.
But let’s face it nothing is going to outshine what my mate Meat did on Friday night. That was the first ever time that Bat Out Of Hell has been performed live on television and what an experience - come on everyone lets all admit that one can still rock at 62.

I voted for Bernie because I thought she was brilliant, was very sad when she didn't win because I thought it was wrong. Darius didn't do it for me personally.
Darius sang and performed well in the final, arguably the best he's achieved since he first sang Non Piu Andrei, which as Meat said was when "it popped for him .. and why he's in the final".
Bernie was my pick, because she sang so well every week, and we watched her improve incredibly every week. From popstar to operastar, hers was the more impressive journey imo, and I was genuinely taken aback when they announced Darius had won, because although I rarely expect phone votes to reward the performer who I think has done best over all, I thought Bernie had such a strong public following that this time I could. (Mind you, he came through on a pretty indifferent performance last week and knocked out a brilliant voice, so perhaps that should have forewarned me .. but I took that as either partisan voting, or a lot of people apparently feeling like Andy .. lol)
So, a rather disappointing result I'd agree .. but no rights or wrongs .. just the odd nature of public phone voting. They both performed well on the night, and if that night alone was a basis it would be hard to choose between them. For me Bernie performed best over the 6 weeks .. hope to hear more opera from her :)
It's been a great show to me. Even without Meat being in it I would have really enjoyed it, but being able to watch him every Friday night has been a delight, his comments always point on and made me smile, his exuberance infectious, his obvious admiration for the effort all the performers put in and his delight in their successes heartwarming, his outfits stunning :), and his own performance of BOOH brilliant.
Whatever his thoughts about doing the show may have been beforehand, he embarked on it with the thoroughness you'd expect from him, made a great contribution (I sense behind the scenes as well as on screen) and seems to have really enjoyed it, and made new friends :) Friday nights will seem a little poorer to me now.

I have to say, I normally can't be bothered to watch things like XFactor or Fame Acadamy, so I only watched this originally because Meat was in it. However, I discovered I actually quite liked this show, partly because of Meat, and partly because the standards were so high compared to what I was expecting. A great idea, which I hope comes back for a 2nd series.

I was quite pleased that Darius won. He seemed to really put everything into his performance and it wasn't just the singing but his acting ability that did it for me. I thought Bernie looked and sounded really stressed out and nervous. Still, it was a good show overall and I hope it returns again next year. Of course, I loved seeing Meat each week and that was originally the main reason I watched but over the weeks the whole show grew on me.
The big question (at least on the Popstar to Operastar Facebook group) is "So, exactly what did Darius win?" :)

According to today's papers the show won't have a second series as it didn't have the expected number of viewers. It said they'd hoped for bigger stars and Charlotte Church as a judge.
I really enjoyed the show, Meat's comments brought the Light to 'light Entertainment.'

I have to admit to having spent most of last night after the programme running down dark corridors or dodging in to unused broom cupboards to escape my mighty mate Meat who was very emotional about the idea of our impending separation.
I was threatening to send him a locket with a picture of me in it for him to wear on stage as his promotional tour for his new album kicks of this week in Norway.
In fact on the judging panel I was always the odd one out as Meat has a new album out as has Rolando and indeed Katherine. I on the other hand have only got a paint range. But some of the colours are definitely operatic!

He has said that he is not doing anymore reality tv but we all know his word seems to be a shot in the dark.

I think that's a rather inflammatory statement.
Being a judge on such a show is not doing reality TV. Last time he did it, Meat was told to be crazy and that's exactly what he did.

Meat Loaf was the ONLY reason to watch Popstar to Opera star last season. And his arrangment of Bat Out of Hell for the show was a delight, even if the opera singer wasn't great, it was still amazing!

I agree with all of that Slice. Meat has responded to questions asking if he'll appear on another reality show as a contestant by saying no, he won't. He accepted CA for two reasons; to win money for his beloved charity, and for personal learning and development .. both of which he's achieved. Should there ever be another reality show which ticked those boxes and which he accepted, it would not offer any evidence of inconsistency, as he was being asked about the shows currently around which don't. Although imo he may still have a wistful dream about Dancing With the Stars ;)
The first week of Popstar to Operastar he was well researched and obviously wanted to give useful feedback to contestants, was repeatedly cut short, and the producers made it clear they wanted him there for crazy "Meat Loaf effect". He'd agreed to do the show as part of a total promotional deal, he's a professional, so that's what he did .. although even in the soundbites he gave from then on here was imo always a useful point, and it was obvious that he gave quite a bit of useful feedback to contestants behind the scenes. His current schedule and commitments makes it pretty obvious imo that he wouldn't be able to fit a second series planned for this summer in, even if he were asked, and asked to be the judge he would like to be.
He would imo make a marvellous judge/coach in any of the plethora of singing talent contests on TV, because he knows more about what makes a compelling stage performance than anyone I can think of, and could give useful and constructive feedback rather than set out to make it a vehicle to promote himself, unlike so many of the judges we see on these shows. However, because of his expressed concerns about these shows, plus producers would probably want what they see as a "crazy Meat Loaf" performance. So I think it's unlikely to happen, although he would make a terrific contribution in that role were he allowed to make it in the way he would want, and felt moved to accept. And should that ever be the case it would be invaluable for the contestants, and demonstrate his integrity, rather than any inconsistency.
He'd also be a great person for Trump to bring back as an ex-contestant adviser .. and this wouldn't demonstrate any inconsistency either ;)
