It appears Meat will be judging in a new celebrity singing competition, hosted by er...Myleene Klass and Alan Titchmarsh.

Well here's the link:

I'll reserve opinion. Who knows, it could be fun.

I wonder how much weight Laurence's opinion is actually going to carry here?

, but actually I don't see a problem - he does at least have his own show on Classic FM, and Meat isn't an opera singer anyway.

They seem well matched to me ... :lmao:

I hope Meat sings a new single at some point in the show.

Bound to I would think, if it is part of a deal with Universal. Maybe he could sing the theme tune???

I think this is going to be awesome exposure for Meat to a whole legion of people who maybe never heard of him or his music before, as well as any existing fans who are watching and not realising he is still around, AND a phenomenal platform for publicity for the new album! Sounds like a very promising start to the launch plans for the new album to me!

Also, I wonder if Meat is going to sing anything opera-stylee?

popstar to operastar starts friday january 15th from 21.00 to 22.30 itv/utv
its expected to run for 7 weeks!! from the itv website there are now links to facebook and twitter for it!! and on such popular websites like havenmusic forum and buzzjacks forums they are already talking about the show [ meat getting alot of mentions ] also lots of talk on digitalspy.com!!
viewing figures expected to be 5-6 million, thats great!! i would say more like 7m or so? so its gonna be great exposure whatever way you look at it!
i would also say meat will perform the new single on the final night?
plus while the show is going on, just think of all the other promo he may be doing? so the best of luck to meat with the show and all other promo

I love all this mention of tough UK winter weather. It hasn't been a picnic in the US either; I imagine you've all heard that Florida has had sleet and snow around Orlando, and the orange crops are on touchy harvest, and the average temp there lately has been in the 30's to 40's F! It should be 70-80F!
Atlanta, Georgia has been around 15-20F lately, where normal temps in January are around 50F, and they had 2 inches of snow a few days ago, which turned to glare black ice, and the Weather Channel had some real interesting videos of cars sliding into one another on that glare ice for 2 days afterwards. Normally when they get snow, usually only in January, it's gone by the next day.
And good ole International Falls, MN, the always-mentioned cold spot during any US winter, was -25F for a high temp last week!
It hasn't been too bad in LA, so Meat's going from around 70F to whatever is going on in the UK.

CarylB
10 Jan 2010, 13:34
Mentioned here I guess because Meat's coming to the UK, not Fla :) ... and it IS exceptional weather for us. He'll be facing a drop from 70F to around freezing .. but hopefully as he steps from building to car to building to car won't be too bothered .. But it may remind him of when he was in Canada during the making of the documentary .. and he didn't like the temperature much then :)

10 Jan 2010, 21:11
personally, if Meat wasnt on it, i wouldnt be watching, have read all the gumpf and seen the ad, and cant get too excited about this.
However as Dave says, it is usually a good thing, and seems even more likely to be a good thing for judges.
But if all else fails, all the promo they'll send him on to promote the show will give him a chance to talk about the album or at least get his face back out there ready for the album release.

lorenzoduke
10 Jan 2010, 21:45
I can't help but think that the majority of Meat's other albums have sold very well without the need for him being on a reality show.

I guess this is just what's expected of people these days though. TV bosses think that the general public would rather see a singer judging, or cooking, or dancing on ice than actually singing.

At least its music related, and could be enjoyable enough. I would be surprised if Meat does sing a new song on the show though.

its a good bit of promo!! hes gonna be on the t.v every week for six weeks!!
it will do more good than harm, so its a good thing really!
im sure he will entertain and be good fun to watch!
i would be surprised if he does not sing something off the new album? it would be crazy to miss that chance? and then im sure he will be appearing on everything over the coming weeks!! so he will be everywhere
i think he should release the first single by the end of the show, a few weeks before the album comes out, that would give the single a chance to build up as it needs to get out there and gain interest! as the singles chart is alot harder to get into these days with all the downloading! and i hope the record company release it at the right time [ give it a great chance for number one ] the album that is
as chsib was released the same week as madonna,s american life and bat 3 was released the same week as robbie williams rudebox! end of february or start of march theres not alot of big albums getting released? if meat could nick a number one it would raise a few eyebrows = more media attention!!

anyway best of luck meat and heres to a great year!!

Just finished watching this, and I must admit the standard of performances was far higher than I expected. Very enjoyable.

Shame a certain Loaf didn't get more screentime, but hey, he made an impression all the same.

Will definitely be tuning in for the following weeks. Kym Marsh and Jimmy Osmond impressed me particularly.

(Maybe this thread should be moved to L.C.A.?)

CarylB
16 Jan 2010, 01:39
Yes, I thought the standard was high. They'd all put in such effort and it was an excellent show .. Given it's an hour and half I do think AT could invite ALL the judges to comment on all the performances .. Meat wasn't the only one who wasn't asked to comment on each singer, and neither he nor LLB were allowed to comment on Kym Marsh.

Still he certainly took the floor when he could :) .. and his remarks were always encouraging and positive .. I sense he was impressed by the standards too, particularly by Darius, as was I. Immediately afterwards he was still in the zone, and Meat picked up on that :)

I thought Marcella (Shakespeare Sisters) was strong and look forward to seeing how she develops too ..

Good show and well worth watching!

I enjoyed the show, despite dh doing exaggerated snoring noises from across the room...lol. Thought Meat looked fantastic and was very encouraging and he definately gave some life to the panel. :) It was a shame that everyone couldn't express their opinion for each performer - not sure why...where did all of that time go? Don't have a favorite contestant yet but it was a shame the guy from Pulp got voted off - what a good sport and entertaining to watch!

This programme would be so much better without the warbling opera. Enjoyed watching Meat, who was his usual unpredictable self, but had to switch the sound off when they all sang.

I can't stand the jenkins person, her voice makes me want to puke:sick: (go on jump on me opera fans). can't stand the racket, never have, never will.

It did seem quite hurried - actually, pretty refreshing compared to most reality/contest shows where things are dragged out as interminably as possible! I also noticed it ran 3 minutes over, so presumably the skipped judging parts were due to that. Maybe as contestants are eliminated and the format is tweaked, we'll get to hear more from the judges.

Alex was from Blur, not Pulp btw...but I did think he was the weakest of the lot, despite being pretty good.

lol .. now, I loved the singing Christa :) I don't go to the opera because all the bits between the singing, usually in Italian, drag when they're incomprehensible :) But I do like the music and the voices. And I liked how Meat wanted to explain to the audience the meaning/emotions of the arias .. so important to him, and because he conveys the emotion of a song so powerfully when he delivers it, he carries us with him and away from the mundane world .. which is what a great aria should do :) Just think of that great Callas aria in Philadelphia .. It's not just that voice .. it's the emotion she conveys that moves me to tears just as it does Tom hanks in the film.

Have to say, I don't watch these kinds of show normally .. Celebrity Come Prancing, Celebrity Ass on Ice etc .. and if Meat handn't been a judge I'd have probably not watched this .. and I'd have missed out! So thanks Meat :) I shall enjoy watching this reality show!!

To me the show was ok at best. Did seemed hurried. I think it the show had better presenters it would be better. Myleen Klass is a awful presenter. There is a you tube clip of Danny Jones and Meat's comments on him. First, I think the presenter guy (I don't know his name) is going to get a five knuckle shuffle from Meat if he keeps hurrying him through his critiques. :) Either that or they'll just go back and forth like Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell do on American Idol. But anyway, Meat's comments were animated and point on. As he motioned to the beautiful ladies in the front row mentioning the commitment to THAT kiss. I couldn't help but think.....a kiss is a terrible thing to waste. Meat looks comfortable and happy to be there. From a tweet yesterday, he may be singing?!? Keep us posted everyone.

Alan Titchmarsh .. well known gardener, then author and presenter on daytime TV .. lol. He was hosting the Paul O'Grady show when Meat appeared on it ..

Some friends watched it last night and commented on the quality and knowledge shown in Meat's comments, plus that he seemed constrained by the format and being rushed to feed back in just a sentance or two. Alan Titchmarsh wants to constrain him? .. well, I wish him good luck with that!

Meat has so much more to offer the performers than the scant bit he was allowed last night .. I hope as the numbers of performances reduce he gets to show more of what he can give them .. and suspect might do so backstage anyway? :)

The two professional opera singers concentrated on the voices .. which is entirely appropriate. Their feedback was interesting, constructive, and I noticed Meat listening intently to them. But Meat has so much to offer in terms of the drama and conveying the passion/emotions of the pieces .. and drama and passion after all lie at the heart of opera .. Which is a signal reason why his performances are always described as operatic of course ;) So I hope AT reins back his constraints and Meat isn't left again trying to elbow in a useful and interesting piece of feedback in just a few words .. although his were well chosen and hit the mark each time imo.

Meat was good but the overall presentation and format was poor. No need for two presenters or LLBowen.

I agree with you that the presenters left much to be desired. Myleen Klass has very limited skills imo, and Alan Titchmarsh is perhaps more comfortable when he's in an armchair with his own brand of talk show. He seemed ill at ease last night, and his efforts to rush through the judges' comments irritated me no end. I don't see any need to always have two presenters either .. (apart from providing jobs for that ever-growing industry). I understand a little chat with performers after they've sung to settle them back, but this could be done just as easily by one presenter for the whole show, and certainly by someone with more substance than Klass.

LLB didn't make much of a contribution, although he was also being rushed through.

I enjoyed the concept of the show and the performances, but then I really enjoy operatic music even if I find the recitative of an entire opera hard to manage. I love the music, the passion, the voices. I'd certainly like to see Meat being the time to make the valuable contribution he could, and one presenter more comfortable and skilled at managing the process. The latter won't happen .. I hope the former does ..

I think we can all agree that Meat Loaf is the numbah one cooliest judge EVAH, but some of the "popstars" on there were lackluster. I found myself just wishing Meat would hop on a motorcycle and ride up to the stage through a stream of fire and tear the place down with a performance of a new song, but that didn't happen. His comments are worth the watch though, and hopefully this show will wake up some of the people that still think he's retired.

Don't think Titchmarsh did himself any favours by asking Meat to be brief with his comments - that's just asking for trouble!!

When Meat was announced as a judge on this I didn't think there was any chance that he'd perform a song from the new album (Cos he's a judge and they don't usually perform on such shows). However next week Katherine Jenkins is performing and also Meat has said that the 1st single from new album comes out in about 5 weeks, so there probably is a fair chance that he will get a chance to perform on it after all. Hope so anyway!

Also, in one of the interviews about the show he mentioned negotiations that went on with ITV and his management for doing this - wonder if there's any chance that there would be a TV special 'An audience with...' as part of the negotiations? There's been one for Lionel Richie, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart etc & I think Meat would be perfect for this kind of thing - be like storytellers again.

I've always thought Meat would be perfect for An Audience With .. what a treat that would be :) I saw him in Storytellers, and it played to all his considerable strengths; probably the show I've enjoyed the most. He's done some stellar concerts, but that combination of stand-up improv and singing was just marvellous :)

Katherine seemed keen on doing a duet with him. Whether there's a song from the album that would provide a fit with the concept of the show I don't know .. but it would be great to see a performance from him either way. And if we don't .. I shall still relish his comments as a judge ... provided they stop trying to rush him through. The downside of AT trying to cut him short is that it forces Meat into brief and dramatic soundbites .. though even then, given you have a few brain cells operating, his colourful phrases convey exactly what he's trying to get across :) .. and to me underline what he's trying to show .. it's all about the drama and the passion!

Sadly the show is live so they have to run to a schedule, they can't let anyone ramble knowing that they can edit it down afterwards to fit. As the number of stars reduces each week we can only hope that it gives the judges (and hence Meat) more time to speak without being rushed by the gardener.

I don't like reality shows .... so I admit I only wanted to see this show because Meat's one of the judges
But when I watched the clips (thanks again djfierce), I was pleasantly surprised ..... I really enjoyed all of the performances, and the interaction with the entire panel.
Even the background stories, watching the stars prepare for the big night, were fun to watch.

However, as others have already said, I thought both of the hosts left a lot to be desired
They both seemed nervous and out of place ... hopefully that will change, and Meat will be given more of a chance to speak, as the show moves forward.

It'll be interesting to see if Meat sings on the show ... but it's still a great opportunity for him, and great publicity with the new CD coming out.

Here are my thoughts on the first episode of From Popstar to Operastar:

This show really impresses me. Yes, it is very much in the vein of “reality talent show” genre; however, it is impressive to see how the show does fit together. I agree with the comments that have been made about the awkwardness of having two separate hosts or presenters. I believe the show would have best been served with one host – not two. I believe that the female presenter would do a better job on her own. I think the male presenter is not quite sure what is going on. I would also venture to say that the producers of the show very much wanted to have a “high brow” feeling for the show. I think the set, the sound production, and camera work is very good for this genre of television. All that said, I think the set up of the show is contrived due to having four different levels of “cast” of the show – contestants, presenters, mentors, and judges. They would really would have been served better by simplifying the format of the show.

That brings us to the reason we are all watching this show....Mr. Meat Loaf.....he really is like a Bull In A China Shop as a “judge” on this show. I love it and can realize what the producers of the show were going for by having him serve as a judge on the show. Let me say that it is rare to never that I actually sit down to watch television, as I believe it is all stupid brain rot and I would actually rather be out living my life than watching the lives of made up characters read from a script by overpaid schleppers on the television screen. However, as an occasional viewer of American Idol and an avid Big Brother US fan – adding Meat Loaf to this show made the format of this show absolutely fabulous in every way. Every one of these shows has to have a societal norm to establish the mores of the show, but knows the survival in the ratings thrives on the back of the one Bat Out Of Hell that says Welcome To The Neighborhood … Hi honey, I am home! Meat Loaf plays the court jester with all of the grace and dignity the role deserves. His performance as a judge on a singing competition is minimal, at best, but this genre offers nothing more than this for a person in his role. He is the judge – the focus should and is well offered, on the contestants, it is what it is. Again, Meat Loaf could better serve the show with a proper presenter who knows how to cull the best out of the panel rather than watch the clock – a decent host can do both with grace and ease...these two are failing at this task.

Really good move for Meat Loaf to do this show.

Bravo!

Oh yeah...and rock on Marcella Detroit...I have loved that girl since Shakespeare's Sister days....brilliant voice and presence. She is a true diva – rock it girl!!!

I am not even going to bother myself to even learn the male host's name because at the end of the day, he does not really matter. The "mentors" were giving excellent advice all along, and out of nowhere, Meat Loaf prepares to give Danny McFly some of the greatest advice I have heard all night..when what happens...the doofus male host tells Meat to make it brief. There was a golden television moment lost due to the host's inability to properlly manage the fine balance between wrangling time contraints and bringing out the best in the panel.

What really impressed me was that Danny actually listened to what Meat Loaf had to say, reacted to it, but I could tell he also absorbed what his elder statesmen in rock and roll had told him and will attempt to take Meat's comments to the bank for next time!

I am really enjoying watching this show and am thankful for being given the chance. Thank you for the uploads...thank you ten thousand times for the uploads. The discovery of this show due to Meat Loaf's involvement is very much as impressive to me as the discovery of Tom Brislin's band, Spiraling - which I still follow.

Bravo!
(I still think Marcella Detroit is my fave)

This came up on my google news alerts:

http://watchwithmothers.net/2010/01/18/popstar-to-operastar/

Completing the judging line-up is Meat Loaf. Thankfully he’s still bat (Out Of Hell) shit crazy and nothing he says makes any sense. He’s a random simile-generator who stands up to bellow his incomprehensible thoughts directly into the brains of the perplexed performers, all of whom desperately try to smile politely throughout.

With Meat Loaf, the first time you hear something you are like "what????" then after you take a moment, you are like "yeah..." I am glad to see that someone appreciates the fun that is Meat Loaf!

Maybe as contestants are eliminated and the format is tweaked, we'll get to hear more from the judges.

 Correct
There were 8 contestants in the first episode, which puts serious constraints on time.
As weeks go by, and more contestants are illiminated, there will be more and more time for judges to speak, and for guest performances.
In fact they need more spotlight on the judges and guest performances as the weeks go by, as they lose a performer every week, resulting in more time needing to be filled.
On the last week it's going to be two singers doing one song each.
That's going to leave a hell of a lot of airtime to fill.

Do you reckon he has now got a 'compliments' app for his iPhone instead of the insults one we saw him using in Twiter a few months ago!!!!

I thought Meat was more of a go phone man myself :bleh:

Some friends watched it last night and commented on the quality and knowledge shown in Meat's comments, plus that he seemed constrained by the format and being rushed to feed back in just a sentance or two. Alan Titchmarsh wants to constrain him? .. well, I wish him good luck with that!

Again, Meat is rushed because the whole show is rushed.
As contestants drop out things will relax and there will be more time for conversation.
It's nothing to do with Alan Titchmarch wanting to constain him, it's about him needing to constrain him.
He's the host, so it's his balls on the line if the show is suddenly running 20 mins late.
Prime time TV, Live, and it's up to YOU to make sure everything stays dead on time.
Hell, I wouldn't like that challenge.
And then you add MEAT LOAF to the mix?
If I ever bump into Alan Titchmarch, i'm going to buy him a pint for taking that challenge on.

Don't think Titchmarsh did himself any favours by asking Meat to be brief with his comments - that's just asking for trouble!!

OK, someone pinch me to see if i'm awake, because I can't believe i'm about to defend Alan Titchmarch on a Meat Loaf forum for two comments in a row :wtf:

I don't think it's asking for trouble by asking a judge to be brief when it's live TV.
A.T. is the ring master of the circus. It's his job to keep everything running, running well, running smoothly, and running on time.
You can't balls the job up because you've got a program that's ready to start after your program has finished.
You can't take 2 for another go, it's got to be perfexct first time.
Out of professional courtesy, you should follow the ring masters lead.
Yes, we love Meat, and it's great to see him on prime TV in this way. He's funny and this could be an awesome piece of promo, but this is not the Meat Loaf show.
When he's interviewed on a chat show, it's all about HIM for that allotted time.
This is something different. This is about him offering a few comments when invited to.
As time becomes less of a factor, he'll have time to shine, but if he acts up in the meantime it's going to look like he's trying to upstage the show and he'll come over as an egotastic asshole.
OK, there's no such thing as bad publicity, but there is such a thing as good publicity.

The only reason I say that Titchy was asking for trouble by telling Meat to be brief is cos that's just gonna make him take longer - he always rebels when presenters/interviewers tell him to wrap it up! I get it that the live show has to be done pretty promptly, but if he had just let him get on with it Meat probably would have been quicker anyway.

Yes, I'm aware of that, in fact I said in my post "I hope as the numbers of performances reduce he gets to show more of what he can give them .. " .. not conversation, but useful feedback and pointers, plus the explanations he can give about the meaning of the pieces. He's knowledgable and well-researched, and himself deserves better than a UK rag deriding his soundbite comments.

It's nothing to do with Alan Titchmarch wanting to constain him, it's about him needing to constrain him..

Certainly the format for the first show, with so many introductions, put significant constraints on it .. I also think, and it's my view, that AT seemed less than comfortable hosting this type of show, which is a bit of a first for him. Meat WAS being brief in his comments, and imo interrupting him to tell him to be brief just extended the process.

He's the host, so it's his balls on the line if the show is suddenly running 20 mins late.
Prime time TV, Live, and it's up to YOU to make sure everything stays dead on time.
Hell, I wouldn't like that challenge.

Presumably why you don't audition for such a role ;) But it IS the role, and if you take it on you need to manage it without getting tetchy. It's a role Meat has undertaken for two series of TV shows in the US, so he'll be aware of it, and imo is why he DID keep his comments brief. But I stand by my view that Meat has much to offer in terms of giving feedback on the drama/passion aspect of the performances as opposed to comments on vocal aspect.

There are two things here for me. Firstly, Meat has more to offer, and I hope that as the show progresses and there is more time for comments from the judges, he can give the performers more. On Friday's showing he has more to offer than LLB imo.

Secondly, Meat DID keep what he said brief and to the point, and AT had no need to interrupt him to hustle him on in my view .. all it did was lose time.

Actually I don't entirely agree on this occasoion .. Meat's a professional, and he has hosted shows himself, so imo wouldn't react in the same way he would when invited on as an interviewee. I doubt he could have been quicker .. his comments were very brief .. but I agree that there were times when AT's interventions of themselves slowed things down :)

I did catch Darius singing at the beginning, thought it wasn't as compelling as last week, and loved Meat's feedback at the end .. "You could have smacked that on the ass more!" .. lol .. I thought Marcella and Danny were the stand-outs this week.

I see another of the judges is going to be singing in next week's show, following Katherine Jenkins performance this week. That leaves Meat as the only singing member of the panel that won't have sung yet, so fingers crossed for a week on Friday?

I thought Marcella and Danny were the stand-outs this week.

After Marcella Detroit's great performances, I don't want to hear any comments from a jury, even if Meat Loaf is one of the judges.

Why can't experienced artists just sing songs to entertain an audience - WITHOUT a competition and WITHOUT a jury? Why does it have to resemble Idol or X Factor?

The show could be fun if the concept was a little more inventive.

My proposal ;): Let Meat host the show :kickass:, get rid of the jury, bring Alex back (not a perfect opera singer but extremely entertaining), provide some background info on the performed songs (yes, I'd like to learn something - but then again, well, it's TV... what the hell do I expect) and present the whole thing in a more amusing, intelligent way. It was a shame to see Jimmy go. I think he'd been given the short end of the stick, not getting a proper aria until this week and was surprised to see him go after he'd done such a good job of it.

CarylB
30 Jan 2010, 11:55
I thought so too. His performance last night was I thought the stronger of the two, and if not the stronger over all three shows was perhaps because this was the first time he'd been given the opportunity to sing a more "operatic" aria.

I thought Marcella Detroit was simply outstanding last night (the three female singers the strongest imo). If she keeps this up she should win .. but if the final decision lies with an audience vote may lose out as she doesn't have the fan following in the UK that say Bernie has .. (and of course Danny, although they couldn't keep him out of the bottom two last night). But in terms of sheer difficulty Marcella's was the most challenging, and her performance blew me away .. (whereas Darius, who has a strong voice, and I thought was a contender on the first show, to me has not achieved that level since).

It would seem that despite the thinning of the field, they are using the extra time to show more of the singers' efforts in the week of practice. Meat again was not invited to comment on two performances, though made an opportunity to say something to Jimmy at the end. I guess he will be restricted to his on point soundbites for this show; a shame, as although they are not only amusing and entertaining but also convey a great amount on how well the performers did, he has much more to offer .. and of course the rags, who don't get him (arguably because they don't really listen) will continue to find them bizarre etc. I would love him to be given the time to give the kind of feedback and guidance on getting over the passion of the pieces that the two opera singers are allowed .. but suspect the show wants "entertainment" from him, rather than the stagecraft advice he is so qualified to give.

Stll .. he can certainly make a soundbite whistle! ;) .. and whistle an aria to boot!

This has turned out to be a really great show! Marcella and Bernie are stunningly good. Meat is very funny, and the other judges seem to be getting used to him now :)

What I also like is the viewers seem to be actually voting for the best singers, and not the sexiest / funniest / most commercial as per Pop Idol, X Factor etc.

Can't wait to see if Meat gets to sing, especially Opera and / or (preferably AND of course) something from the new album!

Once again, I enjoyed Friday's show. Marcella was amazing and she seems to be the most competitive and determined contestant to win. It was sad to see Jimmy go, though. I thought he performed 100 times better than the previous week. Meat was as great and funny as ever...hope he sings soon! :)

Well .. firstly it's the Sun ...

And secondly, Meat does get invited to comment less, and AT did cut him off. And then the critics wonder why he gives short graphic soundbites? If he doesn't crowbar a pithy sentence in fast he'd hardly be heard at all!

They don't get Meat's humour .. don't get him at all. I wish we'd seen him hold up a "Protest" .. that would have been funny :) .. and the oldest hack trick in the world is "a source" ..

As for the so-called "feud" on the Paul O'Grady show .. I don't know where they got this, or more likely decided to create it from. I was in the front row for that show, and there was nothing front of house for that assertion to be justified (And I can't imagine Meat inviting them backstage! .. :lmao: )

Guess they're still holding a grudge from not being allowed into the Bat Caves!

have to agree here....a friend came over yesterday to watch it (because of McFly's Danny ;)) and although I told her Meat really, really is not like that normally, she found his remarks rather embarassing......and she had a point there.

I found this earlier today I had noticed the way they had been favoring the other judges over Meat on Popstar to Operastar. Meat has every right to be annoyed imo.

CarylB
04 Feb 2010, 00:48
That's just a rehash of the Sun's article of course. It's true that Meat doesn't get equal time to comment, but the suggestion in the article that he's not able to ride that particular issue is insulting imo .. I think if he wrote "Protest" it was more likely to be meant in humour.

I don't find his short comments (which are full of imagery and to me convey eactly what he'd like to give as feedback but in just a few words) in the least "embarassing" .. they're point on, amusing and entertaining, which is after all the reason he's on the show.

But I also agree that not all publicity is great .. not when the Sun insinuates Meat isn't more than professional enough to deal with the restrictions imposed on his input. I have watched the show each week and he is nothing but good humoured .. to suggest he's waging some kind of petulant war with Titchmarsh is rude .. entirely worthy of the Sun of course .. but inappropriate nonetheless. And if it was used by the programme makers to generate publicity to help hike the ratings as Andy wondered .. shame on them

Indeed I did; wouldn't miss it .. and the fact it was pre-printed in line with the Sun story is precisely why I think he was being funny .. and that deadpan expression he often has when he's making a point .. "Oh yes, this is for you Alan .. " Imo one he was making to the Sun .. he can read .. indeed they all can, and it was noticeable that AT was at pains to invite Meat in for each performer and give him time to make more comment .. despite the fact they've cut the show to an hour now there are less acts.

Yes I thought so too, because he'd worked really hard and gave a very good performance. But he was outclassed by the others .. the three female singers are all very strong, and Darius just nosed ahead imo with a song really suited to his voice.

I was really surprised to see Marcella in the bottom two.

Yes, she's been PHENOMENAL. But I suppose she had a very "quiet" sort of minimalist piece this week. She did it beautifully (I mean, as far as I know!) but maybe not so inspiring for the voters at home?

Darius is now the weakest link, but will the votes reflect this?

Oh sorry, wrong show... :D

I agree .. she's far and away the best, and I think of all their voices hers has a resonance closest to what you'd expect from a trained opera singer. As Meat said, it was a hard song to be given because everyone knows it and perhaps many don't see it as technically challenging as some of the other pieces .. but she sung it beautifully. I think performers like Bernie and Kim probaby pull in more phone vites in the UK .. but if there's any justice Marcella ought to be in the final and win .. I see she's leading the field for the smart money at the bookies though ;)

Darius is now the weakest link, but will the votes reflect this?

Yes .. on Friday he had a song best suited to his voice and arguably was the strongest he's been, but I agree he's outclassed by the remaining female singers .. though phone votes are often cast for very different reasons than best performance .. just consider Celebrity Come Prancing!

Whilst Marcella has a great voice, I'd back Bernie to win it. Based purely on the fact that Bernie comes across as less arrogant and more likeable ... Marcella is good and she knows it (and exudes it) and I think that will backfire on her with the public who do vote.

CarylB

I think that's rather harsh Andy .. I don't see her coming across as arrrogant at all. Yes, she's very good, and she performs confidently, but works hard and is just as anxious before during the practice week as anyone, plus if you read her Tweets, she's thrilled to still be there, and is nervous each week as to whether she'll be able to do her song justice.

I agree that Bernie is likely to get a bigger popular vote because she probably has a bigger UK following, but not to vote for someone who performs best just because she gives a confident performance is a bit sad imo .. and perhaps a reflection of the times and the GBP's way of voting for who they see as an underdog .. as in Come Prancing :(

These are professional singers, and to come out and give of your best with a poised and confident performance is professionalism imo, not arrogance. Meat always comes out and owns the stage .. and we know how he angsts before and after a show!! .. but it's his job to be confident when he's on stage, so that's what he always gives.

May be it is harsh, but it's my (and quite a few others who I've spoken to) opinion based on watching her on the show. A performer should really give a likeable and personable performance as well as it being of a good quality and pleasing to the ears. IMO Marcella only meets the latter criteria.

Yes, Meat comes on and owns the stage when he performs, but the way I view it he does so with humility and good grace and a lot of humour. Traits that I see are lacking in Marcella on that show.

I posted this on the Facebook Popstar to Operastar page but will also post here...I was catching up on the last two weeks of Harry Hill last night and it appears that he has made Popstar to Operastar a regular on his show. Saturday's show even featured a clip of Meat in it - with of course a silly retort from Harry.

Harry is also doing his very own "K Factor" based on all of the different talent shows - but in this case, viewers are invited to send in any objects they have knitted (he then brings them to life at the end of the show in a talent competition which is hilarious). Judging the competition is Knitted Simon Cowell, a knitted Rolando (which is absolutely bonkers!) , a knitted "Cheryl Coles" and of course Harry's very own Knitted Character.

I'm not sure what time the show is on. And I think you can watch it on the ITV1 website, but only if you live in the UK :-( Hopefully someone will upload it quickly so those of us in the USA can see it too !

Should be interesting - I can't imagine Bat with opera singing but will definitely be watching. Wonder if the orchestra will be accompanying a la MSO? Will be a spectacle anyway

Does anyone remember the version of Bat that Meat sang with Russell Watson back in, i think 2006 ? Although he is more of a...shall we say...self proclaimed opera singer, I thought him and Meat sounded really cool together!

Heres the clip ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5fH6y1KdW8
