I'm reading " the pillars of the earth" by ken follett... it is a fantastic book!!!!!
I've just started The Shawshank Redemption, loving it!
A couple of books I found were brilliant for a relaxing read - I read them when I was up and down to Birmingham on the trains - were both of the Bridget Jones books. They're not too similar to the films and are both very funny.
Has anyone read Fight Club yet? Spotted it in a book shop the other day, I didn't even know it was released as a book!!

It was originally a book. I've read it and it's much better than the film. Bits are in the book that aren't in the film and other bits are played out more in the film than in the book. I would say read the book after watching the film.

We had to read them for GCSE, very good plays actually. The Iliad is another good book by Homer, or The Odyssey also by Homer. This year was the first time I read it all the way through. The best bit about The Odyssey (I haven't really studied The Iliad) is that the story was passed down as verbal poetry from about 1550 BC until it was written down by Homer in about 775 BC, which if you read carefully you can see inconsistancies where Homer has put what would have been used in his times instead of what was used in the times of when it was supposed to have happened. Like in 1550 BC they were in the bronze age, but in The Odyssey sometimes iron is mentioned.
Obviously it does depend on what you are interested in because there are some great Philosopy books. Also it depends on whether you just want to read what was written or why it was written etc... The worst thing about studying the Classical Period is there aren't very many good text books which makes it harder to study.
Romeo and Juliet one of my favourites...

Angels and Demons - Dan Brown
I really enjoyed that one! I read it about a couple of months before Pope John Paul died, and I had hoped it wasn't an omen of things to come (he'd just been taken into hospital, then), so it was interesting to see the elections being held shortly afterwards.
I'm four chapters from the end of "The Rule of Four", dubbed by one of the high profile broadsheets as 'the Da Vinci Code for people with brains' It is good, but I enjoyed Da Vinci better, it was more fast paced and controversial ;) After this I plan to read the new Anthony Horowitz: Raven's Gate, and, on inspiration from 'Lost', I wouldn't mind reading "Lord of the Flies" again. Those two are coming with me to Lake Como tomorrow!!! :))
Now reading Hammer Of The Gods - the Led Zepplin biography...i think thats what its called. im too exhausted to go find it. (bed 4 jen now)

Yesterday - "The Taking" by Dean Koontz
really good, if a little wordy. takes a while to get into but really gripping once the plot gets going. a couple of loose ends but a really intersting and thought-provoking ending. going to look for some of his other books.
Today - "Don't Say A Word" by Andrew Klavan
the book the film was based on, I havent seen the film but the plot in the book sounds more intersting! you really feel the pressure building and all the threads of the story come together, although there are a few "doh!" moments! could have done with a slightly more rounded ending though.
Orginally got these books out of the library to keep me occupied when it got quiet at work, but got hooked in them so had to finish them. Not sure I can keep up reading a book a day though! :?

If you don't have much time to read, don't waste it on crap...dump the book and move on...

thatīs true itīs getting riddiculous near the end but I like his style to put sientific factīs in his books. When youīre through you feel like youīve studied astrophysics for years:))
Even if anybody wants to lynch me now, I have to say my favourite Crichton is still Jurassic Park , followed by sphere:oops::oops:

didnt read that one:oops: yet;)
I have to disagree, I think sphere is a good book, especially the idea that the real threat is in peopleīs heads, and that it can come true, a very scary thought.
The (german) title of the book is a little stupid, itīs called "the thoughts of evil", that kept me from buying it for a long time.

all movies to crichton movies are crap! even JP, which I really liked, couldnt watch it anymore after I read the book.
Watched the movie to "Timeline" yesterday.......ouch
Well I have lately been reading the Winston series from Michael Dobbs - British political thrillers about Winston Churchill.
I have also just completed "The life & Times of The Thunderbolt kid" by bill Bryson which was fantasti. All about growing up in small town Iowa in the 1950's.
I've finished all the Michael Connelly "Bosch" novels - they are some of the best books I have read lately about an LAPD detective.
And i have read the Stuart Pawson novels about a Yorkshire policeman. They are set ina fictional town which is based pretty much around m village!!
Next up, in no particular order, is Stephen kings latest novel - Lydias Story; Stephen ings "IT" which i have never read adn some new terry Pratchett Discworld novels.
But first, the Readers Digest Book of Home improvement - i am teaching myself to wallpaper!!

Well, don't worry about German translated titles...I read Heinrich Boell in Russian and in English...and in English translation was so poor that I didn't even figure out that I am reading the same book as I've read in Russian until the very end...And his Clown book (can't recall, unfortunately, what was it called in German) title was translated into English as Clown and into Russian as Through the Eyes of the Clown...which is a big difference.
In Russia we had a play of one actor based on this book and I had NEVER seen anything more incredible or better than that. The ovation lasted 45 minutes after the end of the play and the actor stood knee deep in flowers on the stage...
State of Fear is I think the last Crichton book and although written with a very primitive plot, it raises some incredibly important questions...I think it was written so poorly because he wanted to get it out of the market as soon as possible.
Read the Disclosure...very interesting...

My recommendation would be to start with Different Seasons and Hearts in Atlantis...and take it from there...

Horrendous movie but book ain't that much better.
I have read all the Crichton books but never really got properly into them. My favourite would have to be Airframe.

Dont talk about translations, some of the best books in history arre screwed in the translation. For example all the shakespeare books, the german translator didnt like his kind of humor and so translated the books in the most boring way you can imagine. The german shakespeares are not comparable to the english ones and so it is with many books.

Just read some critics opinions about state of fear and everyone of the critics said it is one of the worst books crichton wrote, so I didnt read it. (yet?)

If you say so...thatīll be the next book Iīll buy.
Thanks for the advice!
I live in a victorian property so the walls are all thik stone with a lime plaster which means they can;t be painted or anything.
I am going for a lightly embossed anaglypta which i can then paint over.

Another hit and miss writer...some of his books are borderline ridiculous...and Airframe is probably the best of his latest writings.

Victorian is a dream come true...wallpaper definitely would be a must...
I am either into ultra-modern or truly old...victorian to me is a dream...but doomed to live in modern...

Ok...
1. I was into Shakespeare in a very big way...we had two major translators of Shakespeare - Boris Pasternak (Dr. Zhivago) and Marshack (mostly children's poetry). Although the gist is the same...translations are very different. And after reading Shakespeare in English, I've realized how much of a poetic license both have taken with his works.
2. State of Fear is BAD...but the premise...is VERY interesting and important for today's society...especially American Society.
3. Don't blame me if you don't like it - this is a matter of personal preference.
And, oh yes...I think Dr. Zhivago is CRAP!

studybook webdesign.... i thought nice to fool around with website's but it is a proffesional study:shock:
Not reading anything at the moment, but recently finished Jonathon Kellerman's "Rage". I was disappointed in the ending, because you knew since quite awhile, who the killer was, and it never threw that curveball at you, of in the end, it was someone else.
J.
Got a lot to read for classes at the moment. But recently it's been:
Tragedy module - streecar named desire, frozen, medea, antigone
Comedy module - absurd person singular, can't pay won't pay
Models of Misrule module - bacchae, quantrill in lawrence, ****-a-doodle-dandy
good plays but a lot of reading!

Just read 'A Spot of Bother' by the guy who wrote 'The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nightime' (sorry, can't remember his name), in the middle of 'And Another Thing...' by Jeremy Clarkson, got 'Lisey's Story' by Stephen King and 'The Ghosts of Crickley Hall' by James Herbert on standby - and I don't know why, but I keep wanting to call it 'The Ghosts of Crinkley Bottom'

Killing me softly by Nicci French
Got to reccommend for the Dark Tower fans that they go get Everything's Eventual by Stephen king.
It is a collection of his novellas which features the prequel to the whole series. It is very good.
