Just stated reading nobody true by james herbert. I couldn't put it down and was up until 3 this morning. god knows how i got up for work.
A quick review a guy has out of body experiences and while out of body he's murdered. Now he's on a mission to find his killer and protect his family. Nearly finished it and i have to say it is brilliant his best recent novel by far.
... still reading the book about Great Philadelphia Fans.. and imagine my surprise when i saw my late son-in-law get a mention in it ... ...

Got to reccommend for the Dark Tower fans that they go get Everything's Eventual by Stephen king.
It is a collection of his novellas which features the prequel to the whole series. It is very good.

I think I must live in an alternate universe - I read both of those about two or three years ago.... loved both, incidentally....
Decided to start reading The Fall Of Carthage by Adrian Goldsworthy again.

that´s true it´s getting riddiculous near the end but I like his style to put sientific fact´s in his books. When you´re through you feel like you´ve studied astrophysics for years:))
Even if anybody wants to lynch me now, I have to say my favourite Crichton is still Jurassic Park , followed by sphere:oops::oops:

I'm partway through Lisey's Story, not bad but a bit cofusing in places, (as well as the Derren Brown one) and got Crickley Hall to go... Did it that way 'cos I'm a bigger SK fan than JH, so if you start Crickley and it's good, let me know and I might start that too!

Ok i think i will start with crickley. I'm a massive Stephen King fan too, but i just think James Herbert is an easier read if you know what i mean. likewise let me know what you thought of Lisey's stoey.
I am reading King's "Lisey's Story" but finding it very slow going for some reason so i expect that will be on my bedside table for some time to come as I dip into it.
Currently reading various stuff on secure online payments, CSS design (invented since i was at uni!!!) and assorted Tax Office documents.
For fun i have just finished Thud by Terry Pratchett and currently re-reading The Cuckoos Nest by Clifford Stoll. This is a fantastic book about a hunt in the 1980's for one of the first computer hackers. Some fascinating stuff for anyone who has ever wondered about the world of UNIX, the first interconnected networks and stuff.

Halfway through Ghost of crickley hall.
Have to say this plot has been done so many times before. A few times by Herbert himself (magic cottage, haunting).
It is well written and the few scares have been good upto now. I'm just hoping there's a good twist to come.
Let you all know when i'm finished.

Finished Lisey's Story this morning, like Chris I found it quite slow to start with, and had trouble figuring out what bool meant, although you do seem to get that explanation in dribs and drabs as you go through...
It sped up quite a lot over the second half, although it reminded me a lot of Rose Red (I think that's what it was called, anyway, the one with the bull in the labyrinth) but I enjoyed it anyway, to the extent that I put stuff off to read it!
Will finish Derren, then start James Herbert
Rose Madder ;)
I'm currently on Special Agent by Candice DeLong which is fascinating. She was one of the early female FBI agents who went on to be the inspiration behind Candice Starling in the Silence of the lambs trilogy.

Thanks Chris, et al., Rose Madder was the one I was thinking of...
Have to say, I prefer King when his mind isn't confused and befuddled by all sorts of illegal substances... The Tommyknockers is for me the worst book he's ever written... but I love the newer stuff, having finished Lisey's Story I loved it, and Cell too, have enjoyed his recent collections of short stories, and the Gunslinger series was excellent, especially the ending of the last book...
Back with Derren now... love what he's got to say about hypnosis - must find a way of incorporating it into my teaching...

Wish I could read a book:( But am at university with lots of work to do, and if I start reading I'll either neglect work or do work and forget bits of story I've already read! Looks like it'll be May or June before I can relax properly with one. As a book addict, that's a very hard thing to realise.
However, did find time one day to read Jonathan Carroll's After Silence. A girl at university recommended him, particularly Land of the Laughs, which I haven't read. After Silence was good, but sad.

Easy, set a business up and then, as soon as the papers have done the publicity, flog it but lease the Virgin name to them.
That way you get loads of money coming in from the name without any of the costs of actually runnign the business and that is why so many of the virgin brands used to sruggle.
It doesn't hurt that he is the majority shareholder in NTL either.
Great if it's that easy, I'm setting up a business right now to sell pickled elephants, once the Skegness Evening Gazette has printed a small story about the business I can sell it and fly out to my south sea island in my lear jet to retire and watch the money come rolling in :))

I have read alot of his stuff. I love his style it is a close call between Koontz and King as to who my fav is. I would actually go with Koontz as his ending are usually better IMHO.
My favourte Koontz Novel's are Fear Nothing then Bad Place. Although have you read his take on Frankinstein it's very good to.
Let me know what you thought of Life Expectancy then we can disscuss it as i don't want to spoil it for you.
Same here.. really enjoy Koontz and King, and agree that for me personally, I like Koontz a bit better.
At the moment, I can't recall the plot of "Fear Nothing" it's been along time since I read it. I do remember "Bad Place", and really liked that one. :) One of my favs, due to his take on how a dog would think is.. "Dragon Tears", the parts involving the dog character made me. LOL :)
I haven't read the Frankinstein books yet( I have them though).
Yes, would love to talk about "Life Expectancy", when I finish it.. could be awhile though, since I don't find time to read much. Anyway, I look forward to chatting about it, Geordieloaf. :)
Thanks

Cool.. another Koontz fan. :))
I have "The Husband" but haven't read it yet. Happy to hear you thought it was good, SamCat. :)) I have the Frankenstein books too, and thought I'd wait until the 3rd one comes out, and then read them all together at once. :D
If anyone has read "Velocity", was it good? I have that one, and the second part of "Odd Thomas" waiting as well.
J.
I have read Velocity but cant remember it but the Frankenstein books are really good i wish i'd waited and read them all together cos they come out so far apart!! Forever Odd is a really good read too and i think theres gonna be another Odd one after it did feel like there was more to come!!

Watchers was great, also thought "Lightning" and "Night Chills" were excellent.

I liked the first Odd Thomas story, and great to hear that "Forever Odd" is good as well. :D
Monstro.. I liked both of those DK books as well. :) I've read them all.. up until the most recent ones.. which I'm working on. :D

You're not the only one...Dean Koontz is REALLY hit and miss...the worst, the most disgusting book I've ever read was actually by him...The Bad Place...argh...
Oh i love the Bad Place it was really gross!!

I kinda like gross!! Try reading Watchers its a really good read its the Koontz book i always recommend to people
I've read almost all of his earlier books...it's new ones that I am not particularly keen on...
But then again...my ADD strikes again and right now I just can't read except for short posts here...thank god for this forum...
The Odd books are a good read and his updated Frankenstein books are really good too!!
Don't know Frankenstein...what's the series called?
I think its just Frankenstein, so far book 1 and 2 My books are in a big cupboard with a big pile of stuff in front so i cant get to them!! Spring cleaning started early this year!!
I have books EVERYWHERE...never mind 6 bookcases overflowing...open closet and out flies out big bag of books and hits me on the head...BUT...sometimes I just can't read...
I only read a few authors so my collection isn't too big!!
I used to average about 40 books in 3-4 weeks...now...as Jonty would say...not so good...old age and all...
Its finding the time i'll read a whole load on holiday hopefully!!
Not about time...no concentration...short attention span disorder...or some such nonsense...
it's called mlukfc disorder (always on it )

I've got a collection called The Bachman Books, which has Roadwork, The Running Man, the Long Walk and (I think) Apt Pupil in it - it's a really good collection...

I read the Husband, quite enjoyed it, haven't read Velocity 'cos I read a load of DK's books, then found some were a bit samey, got so i couldn't see the point in reading them any more 'cos I knew how they were going to go...
My favourites were always Watchers and Lightning tho'...
Thanks for the review, Hypnobabe :))
I know what you mean.. DK went through some kind of "strange" spell there for a bit, a couple of yrs ago... think that's why I have stockpiled several of his books, without reading them.. needed to step away from his writting for a bit. I'm now reading "Life Expectancy", at so far it is really good. :)

Cold Fire is another favourte of mine. There is a book by Koontz i read a few years back that i can't for the life of me think of the title.
It was about a guy who ended up in hospital and all kind of weird things happened. In the end it turned out he was in russia.
Sorry if i have just spoilt the twist for someone it's just bugging me. I have been on google and can't find anything.
Another good writer is Stephen Laws he wrote a few good books he was from Newcastle just woundered if anyone else had read any of his books?

The Dean Koontz book is called The House of Thunder and its lead is female so that might be why you haven't been able to track it down It was published in 1992 so i think its the one!!

About to start The Black Ice by Michael Connelly... Although I have heard about of another one I'm interested in getting hold of, The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld - about Sigmund Freud going to New York and helping with the investigation of a series of rather nasty murders - anyone here read it? Is it any good?
Don't ask me, Claire. Any books about murdering and/or killing remain where they are, and will never make it into my hands ;)
