Meat Loaf Seeks Hartlepool Home
The biggest man in rock, Meat loaf, says that he is looking for a £1m mansion in the northeast close to his new love, Hartlepool United Football Club writes Maurice Chittenden.
The 18st American star, whose album Bat Out Of hell was in the British charts for five years, has instructed his advisers to contact estate agents to look for suitable properties around the town.
The singer and actor could soon be vying for Hartlepool's limited supply of guacamole dip with Peter mandelson, its MP. The only problem is that the agents have so far failed to find a property worth more than £600,000.
The house-hunting follows an unlikey union between Loaf, real name Marvin lee Aday, and the town's football team. The singer threw his considerable weight behind the club's successful push to win promotion from the Second Division, championing its players in television interviews and even draping himself with the club's monkey mascot.
However, Texas-born Loaf, 55, who once professed in song that he would do anyhting for love, has so far preferred to follow games from his hotel suite on visits to london rather than shiver ont he terraces.
Peter Bassett, one of his advisers, said: "Meat is a loveable obsessive and when he gets something in his head it is difficult to shake. He sees himself as having a great British streak."
He added: "He has been tipped off that parts of northern England are areas of good investment and he wants to find a place for that but also as a base for when he is in Britain."
Loaf, once the favourite singer of William hague, the former Tory leader, will keep his main home in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife Lesley.
