Last week Leeds United FC got a single into the UK top 10 by harnessing support on Facebook. We believe we have a real chance of getting the chosen single track "Like A Rose" to the top slot in week commencing 14th of June. The song should appeal to Jack Black fans as well, and to young people who might not associate such a ballsy song with someone they might see as an old rocker :)

This project is about smashing into the UK Singles chart. Given we pull it off we can go for other country's charts with another track, but right now we are asking people to download this track from UK sites. You may have the album, but what we're asking is for people to stand up for Meat against the label who fail to vigorously promote singles to gather momentum for the album, and who fail to vigorously promote him, and to support him by downloading a track for around 89p .. less than the cost of one drink on a Friday night.

We have launched a website meatchart.net, and all our promotional materials will be available through there:

http://www.meatchart.net

Meat has millions of loyal fans who love him and support him.

Stand up with us and together we can do this!!

Our plan follows. Nikox will keep you posted on our progress on this thread.

THE PLAN

Our plan is in two phases:

GETTING THE WORD OUT runs from now up until Download Day on 14th June.

We need to spread the word as widely as possible using internet, press, news blogs, radio, TV, word of mouth. Meat has millions of fans around the world, and we want to harness the support of as many of them as possible, and here's where we need your help.

Internet.
We have a promotional video and text to accompany it. This needs to be on as many webpages around the world as we can get it to. We need you to host our video and message on your webpages, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, fansite, blog .. whatever you have. And we need you to give a link to meatchart.net to encourage more people to support us and do the same. This needs to spread around the internet like a pandemic, reaching out to the millions of fans who own and love his work.

Wherever you visit on the net we need to get this message out:

MEAT LOAF FANS DOING IT FOR MEAT!!!!
Meat Loaf fans everywhere are planning to get his raunchy, rockin' duet with Jack Black
Like A Rose
to Number One in the UK Singles chart
on 14 June 2010
Join the campaign now!
http://www.meatchart.net

When people come to meatchart.net they will be able to get all our promotional materials, plus sign up their commitment to buying the track on 14June, in return getting a signed picture of Meat as a thank you.

Media Coverage
We have a Press Release which will be going to the media on Monday to get this in the news. More and more fans are becoming disillusioned with the way labels treat their cherished iconic performers these days, and are taking matters into their own hands. We intend to capitalise on this. Lorenzoduke is managing our national press campaign.

In addition we need people to volunteer to make contact by phone and email to local radio/TV/newspapers and post on news blogs, spreading the word, and putting the call out to Meat Loaf fans to go to meatchart.net and sign up their commitment to download and to continue spreading the word themselves. Radio stations can't play "Like A Rose" simply because the label hasn't released a second single .. and not one that's almost too hot for airplay :) But it's a story we could interest them in, and just telling listeners to go to meatchart.net would be hugely helpful.

So many people have a story of how Meat's music has touched their lives, often in an incredbly moving way. These human interest stories appeal to the media, and if it grabs their attention, it's another chance to get the word out.

We will have available mini Press Packs for download to help people focus their efforts in the best possible way, and have a team of Local Media Managers who will co-ordinate their efforts and support/advise. 100 calls to the same organisation just tends to piss them off .. we need to be focused, co-ordinated and successful.

The LMMs are:
CarylB
Nikox
Melon
Netty
Snider22
SuzieQ

Please PM them here to offer your support.

Poster Campaign
We have a range of posters to publicise the campaign, which can be downloaded from meatchart.net, and ask people to post them on workplace/recreational notice boards with permission, but not flypost them about in public where they could harm the reputation of the performer they want to support

Mailshots
Rainer has kindly agreed to mailshot the membership list, so please don't be aggravated when you get one which repeats some of this :)
There will also be a reminder on D Day which will give the direct link to the download page on meatchart.net

We're still working on other things, for example harnessing the support of media celebrities, and will update you as and when we have news.

Nikox will post updates on our progress on this thread

LAUNCH DAY 14th JUNE

We will have a new promotional video available from Friday 11 June, which will direct people to meatchart.net to download the single.

Our download page will go live at 12.01am UK time on 14th June. The download sites we will feature will be:
itunes
Amazon.uk
HMV.uk
Tesco

Fans from outside the UK currently cannot download from these sites unless they have a UK bank account or credit/debit card and a UK IP address, but we're working on this to try and find a solution.

We will ensure that all downloads from Amazon.uk are credited to MLUK. We will ask that sites link back to us for downloading to enable this. If anyone wishes people to download the track from their site directly, they will need the relevant urls to ensure this happens, and need to hold back from going live until on or after 00.01am BST.

A second mailshot will go out.

Publicity will continue, with your support, until 19 June at 21.00 BST when the tally of sales will be counted.

This is a time whe Meat's many loyal fans can send a message to the music business, and stand up and be counted in their support of him. Please offer whatever support you can by whatever means we have outlined above, come to http://www.meatchart.net and download as much promotional material as you can use to help make getting Like A Rose to #1 a reality.

Then on 14 June invest 89p in this performer we all follow.

WE CAN DO THIS!!!
LET'S TAKE MEAT TO THE TOP ON 14 JUNE!!!

Am about to join the Facebook group - but I really, REALLY, suggest the use of Wario's promo poster, because that is EXACTLY the vibe that will help make this whole thing come off! Brilliant, man.

The facebook page is coming across as a bit too fan-made in the writing - can we work on that? Caryl? I've got a few hours this week if you want any input - mail me. In the mean time, this is what I've got:

The record company wouldn't release it. Radio refused to play it.
Now it's down to YOU.

(insert 'uncle sam' pointing type picture)

Sick of being force-fed factory made drum-looped psuedo-pop?
Feeling insulted by being forced to listen to the bland blathering techno-beats forced down your ears by The Man?
Got a real bad ache for some real, ball-busting, guitar injected super-rock?
Then step right up, 'cos we've got the perfect antidote to the bland, souless, robo-girl garbage flooding the airwaves and rotting our miiiiiiinds.

Remember that funky dude with the huge voice and the weight problem? Well now he's in the studio, with Meat Loaf, and man, it's sounding totally frickin' hot:

(insert sound clip link)

If you want music to surivive in the 21st century, help us to help you - to help them - by downloading the single on June 14th,
and let's rock the charts ... and take our music back again.

Time to stick it to the man, people.

Like A Rose - Meat Loaf/Jack Black.

Disclaimer:
If you're easily offended by the f*ck word, well, what the hell, go buy it anyway. Just don't play it in front of your grandparents.

It still needs a little work ... feel free to play.

Doode - I like it man, lets get that sh** posted up there

I agree...the fb group looks a little too....cliqueish. People should set their display pictures to something other than having Meat in them with them. Its probably intimidating to less-dedicated ppl joining the group.

ps we're gonna have a twitter and myspace page soon, im doing them. we need more of a badass writeup like that. Along with the design of the myspace page, which is pretty damn hot, it will really grab you by the balls and make you want to become involved.

Hey guys, glad you liked the angle I was going for. It needs some re-wording, but it was a vibe that I wanted to get across that takes away from the whole 'fan-made' angle! However, Caryl has asked me not to post ideas direct to the board - which I may possibly-almost-maybe consider  - so for now I guess I'll keep it to email unless I feel there's something I need to post.

Feel free to play with the words if you think you can improve on them! I'm all for the collaboration.

Lady GaGa has thrown shout outs to fan vids on YouTube, and I know Aaron Carter and Adam Lambert have had recent tweets promoting fan based campaigns. It is not uncommon. We are in the digital age - in 30 minutes, massive groups of people have made random things "trend" in Twitter, which generates buzz in the media. It is all viral and rampant now. The times they are a'changing.

It's nearly the same as the number of polls that you've started ;-).

Is this going to be enough or do TPTB need to find something to get the number up towards the 2000 per day target that was mentioned? I guess it's somewhere less than a tenth of that so far.

Could do with Kev weighing in here with numbers and what chart position it could reach.

Out of interest, if one person downloaded the track a dozen times would it class as a dozen sales or just one because of the same IP address?

I read something about this when Rage Against The Machine was going for number 1. Even if you buy the track from various sites, they have a way of tracking your purchases, so only once will your purchase count, I presume it's through your IP address. :D

I'm not sure that's strictly true, the campaign by Leeds fans recently was based around the fact that you could purchase multiple copies over a period of time I don't thikn there is any IP address tracking other than ensuring that the purchase is made in the UK. iTunes also has the "send a gift" feature which means one person could buy the track for multiple people to download.

Its a bit tricky, there isn't anything to stop you ordering 1 version each day and from different retailers.
Example being - Us monday, amazon tuesday, Play wednesday, HMV thursday, us friday, Amazon saturday, Itunes sunday.

If you were to order one from each place each day then they might get thrown out... also ordering many versions from the same place on the same day could get thrown out also.

Also, orders from outside the UK won't count, but there are ways around that :)

I've been asked to pass the following news along

Marya Roxx, LA based power rocker, has joined the Campaign facebook as a member.

A new website 21centuryrock.net (www.21centuryrock.net), is now on-line aimed at the wider market of rock afficianados, and people who are disillusioned with the music business/labels.

We're still working hard to trigger the internet reaction we need to have numbers of supporters grow exponentially and fast. Numbers are steadily increasing, but the ripple effect has yet to take hold. [B]Anyone who would like to help and support this by putting in an hour hitting websites with the campaign message, please PM Melon (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/member.php?u=3162);Netty (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/member.php?u=4381);snider22 (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/member.php?u=3966);suzieq (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/member.php?u=3941). That way we have most tme zones covered, and will get back to you asap. We're working on it full tilt, but the web's huge, so any help would be tremendous.[B]

We're also aiming for maximum hits on youtube, so passing this link along to contacts/forums etc would be a great help:

I read an FHM interview in which Meat states that he dislikes the fact that you can purchase individual songs from an album via download stores. So does this campaign actually promote and will he possibly benefit from something he used to criticize?

robgomm
05 Jun 2010, 21:48
Yeah he dislikes it but until the rules change he's just got to accept it i'm afraid as have we all. I don't agree with it either by the way. And yes of course this campaign is promoting him because there would be no promotion at all if this campaign wasn't up and running. And Meat can only benefit from this, there are no drawbacks to this campaign.

On another note, I know we have the facebook group which has over 800 members now, but has someone made sure that the link to that group has been posted on all the other Meat Loaf fan groups on facebook? Because there's another 3,000+ members combined on those other groups. I'm surprised we don't have at least this number of members on our group by now.

I seriously doubt this is MORE promotion and would/will reach more people than the things the record company and Meat Loaf have done and will be doing (touring etc)...

I do see drawbacks with this campaign but if I point these out I will be shot down. Some may say rightly so I guess.

The album in its entirety seems to be very important to Meat. He even "forced" people to listen to the whole thing. Shouldn't a single promote the album? The campaign concentrates very much on the song and the involvement of Jack Black. There are hardly references to the album.

if youre going old school, and using singles as promotion for an album, then yes... but that song choice isn't a single, and i believe the campaign is just trying to get meat back into the charts... and then take any promo on for future releases or album work from there

btw, excellent point... the album should be promoted at least as much!!!

Out of curiosity, was the song of choice 'Like A Rose' chosen because it's seen as the best song on the album or because it has Jack Black in it?

Out of curiosity, was the song of choice 'Like A Rose' chosen because it's seen as the best song on the album or because it has Jack Black in it?

i voted for it ... i'm listening to it right now ... and i really like it ... i'm old school ... "it's catchy... i can chair dance to it... " ... i don't care much for Jack Black... i find that Destiny or whatever the band of his is called not my cup of tea... quite frankly Jack Black's antics on film are not my cup of tea either... a bit over the top ala Jim Carey for my taste ... but i'm aware he's popular with younger folks ... or popular period... and i think it's a good song to push to get attention ...

i like the little rap in the beginning.. i'm not a fan of rap... but that bit reminds me of a more gentler earlier old school rap sound ... along the lines of Run DMC when they got together with Aerosmith ... Walk This Way ... you know... one rapper/ singer starts and the other comes in/ talks over ... and i like the pause in Rose ... and the take off of the music...

if this forum was Bandstand i'd rate Rose 95 ... because i like the sound and can dance to it ... ;) ... here's hoping i'll be rockin' out to it when i see 'Imself in concert next month !!!

Out of curiosity, was the song of choice 'Like A Rose' chosen because it's seen as the best song on the album or because it has Jack Black in it?

There was a first poll here on the UK forum, then the top 4 from that were put to the vote again:
Like A Rose 37%
If It Rains 22.86%
Elvis in Vegas 21.43%
If I Can't Have You 18.57%

So it was chosen by the fans here who voted. I'd have been happy to promote any of them, but I too think Like A Rose is catchy, has a raunchy edge which broadens its appeal imo, and because it's a duet can appeal to a wider audience than Meat Loaf fans.

Now you know why two people voted for it :) Can't speak for the rest.

What's Bandstand?

a show hosted by Dick Clark back in the late 50s through ... the late 80s early 90s ? here in the States ... one of the features of the show was to play a new release and have a couple teens rate it ... it really became a bit of a satiric and catch phrase thing to say similar lines said on the show... ie ... "i give it a 75 ... it's got a good beat and i can dance to it" ... lol ...

however... lol ... i was quite sincere when i said similar about Like A Rose ! ... ;) ...

Never watched the show, never heard of the show, so knowing Bandstand and American Bandstand are one of the same is meaningless to me  Thanks for the explanation though.

What's the realistic target for this song? Top 50?, Top 40?, Top 30?, Top 20?, Top 10?, Number #1 :wtf: :faint:

It is called "the fan campaign single", so I'd expect at least a few traditional single features. ;)

I think number 1 would be very hard the week from the 14th considering the World Cup song and Eminem's new single are out then in the UK.

To be honest I don't know we'll get anywhere as we don't appear to have many members right now, hopefully it's really going to grow through this week. But i'm gonna keep on pushing anyway, it's been a fun little project for me.

I don't know how many sales you need to get into the top 40 these days? Perhaps someone could tell us who was no. 40 last week and how many they sold?

I wonder how many people will download the song because they really like it and how many will be those who already own the CD but will download the song anyway in order to "support" Meat. I would like to know how representative the result will be as to how popular the song actually is.

people don't always buy a single just because they like it, in fact I'm sure with the likes of X Factor's winning entry in any given year the reason to buy that single is to be seen as following the trend.

A Slice Of English
08 Jun 2010, 19:07
The reality is you will never know who is downloading it for what reason. I think a realistic figure for the number of downloads on the D-Day will be 1000 to 2000 and I would not be surprised if some people download the song through multiple different methods as some kind of deluded "support" type thing. I would be surprised, and pleasantly so, if the song made it anywhere near the Top 40.

That would be a good figure. I think realistically though it will be much less than that. Perhaps a few hundred.

i don't know what it is in the scheme of things but I do know that, based on the figures so far, it'll have a close to a thousand or so extra downloads of it on June 14th.

So it will have some impact, whether it's enough to be noticed on the chart is another thing

Radio 2 would be the best bet as Chris Evans, Ken Bruce, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo are all Meat Loaf fans. That's pretty much all of their daytime line-up. Jeremy Vine is more of a Smiths and 80's man I think!!

I've been asked by the campaign team to forward this.....

Those following the progress of the campaign the last 2 weeks will know that, despite our best efforts, we didn't create the exponential (Su-Bo) effect we had wanted to achieve to secure our goal in a short time-frame.

We're thrilled with, and considerably proud of what we've achieved. We have just over 1100 people actively wanting to push this forward, and although we didn't manage to light the flash fire we needed for a quick win, we know we have the base to be successful with a longer campaign. So the decision we have taken to not go for it next week isn't in our eyes a failure, but based on our conviction that we can, and will, be successful with an adjusted strategy. This project was always about supporting Meat, and by securing a win in the UK Singles charts gain publicity and help increase awareness and sales of HCTB. That remains the same.

Tracking on our website indicates there is a large and ever-growing list of links that Google's crawlers are linking to our site. What we've all been doing IS taking hold, but we need now to continue building the fire we've built and grow that to get the numbers we need, whilst knowing that at any time the Su-Bo effect may kick in and a the sudden rapid rush across the internet occur. The longer time scale will also give us more time to get the interest of the media which should provide a key boost to the campaign.

We have had promising discussions with a major download provider, and if we can demonstrate the numbers we need and intend to get to make this a success, we should be able get this company on board, and in such a way as to generate extra sales that week.

We know the support is out there. We know we can harness it. But we have always been agreed that should we find at this stage that going with the original target date would result in an effort which doesn't register in the charts, we would defer it:
* To preserve the integrity of a model approach we've built and are continuing to build, that we are proud of, and know in our hearts can work
* For the sake of all those fans who ARE committed and want to make this work for Meat
* Most importantly to ensure Meat's name can't be associated with a campaign that didn't deliver the result he deserves, because we know that, even if not this month, we CAN make this work

The many enthusiastic and committed fans who are behind Meat and the project want him to have a chart success, not a damp squib. We will work with them to ensure we build towards a rocket he can be proud of. So we will continue to spread the word, reaching more fans every day, and the message will keep spreading, gathering momentum faster and faster as it goes until, when we go for the new date we will be doing it with the knowledge that success is certain.

In addition we are going to commence a sustained promotion of HCTB, through a new website. Far from distracting us from the Single Campaign, we believe each push will assist the other. The HCTB promotion will follow the principles advocated by Roadrunner, seeking to establish a ground force of Street Teams to spread the word, and we will adopt the same method with the Singles Campaign. The level of effort, the hours we have put in, need to be reined back a bit if we are not to suffer burnout, but our level of committment is if anything greater, as is our determination. We will actively recruit and harness the support of other fans and focus our efforts on a sustained campaign for LAR and HCTB.

The HCTB site (meatloaf-hangcool.net) is well timed to co-incide with Meat's USA/Canada tour, and support a second sales push there, although it will seek to promote HCTB around the world. Full details will be on the new site by Monday.

The Singles Campaign will now focus on a new date of 29 November 2010, which we hope may also coincide with some UK tour dates. We are announcing the deferral via meatchart.net and our other webpages, through a mailshot to those who signed up on meatchart.net, a message to Facebook members, and a Press Release tomorrow. We are aware that some who've signed up to support the download may have their attention drift elsewhere, but will contact everyone who has signed up to dowload with a reminder before the new date.

Future updates on progress will be posted on meatchart.net in the News Room. We are supremely grateful for the support Rainer has given us through the MLUKFC site, and hope this will continue, but we are aware of a level of controversy the campaign has caused in the forum here and the extra work it has caused R and his team. Those who are interested in our progress can easily follow it on our site, and those that would like to lend support will be very welcome.

We're in no way despondent, but still highly committed and motivated, because we know we can make this work. We've achieved a helluva lot in a couple of weeks, and have a sound base to build from, but also need to face reality. What a few people may say about us doesn't matter, because we still firmly believe we can do this, and remain as enthusiastic as ever.

Meat Loaf Fan Single Campaign Project Team
