I sort of feel sorry for the guy but on the other I'm thinking he's just made himself look like a total idiot on TV, surly if you knew you were going on a TV programme to promote a new album/film or whatever you would at least know enough to talk about it. This was a totally weird interview !!

Of course he was. He was acting. This was a viral stunt for his movie "I'm still here". He was on yesterday apologising to Letterman:

“Yeah, but, I mean, I think that you’ve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person,” he told David. “But I apologise. I hope I didn’t offend you in any way.”
