Before I start my "rant", I'd just like to state the following. I found this web site about a week ago thanks to Suzieq and her husband. Hanging out here has been great. I'm impressed by the amount of "younger" fans on here. My journey following Meat Loaf began in 1978...probably before many on here were born. It's great to see that he has so many younger fans, surely a testament to his passion to perform and his ability to reach all groups of people.
As I mentioned, I've been a fan since 1978 when I first saw Meat on Saturday Night Live. Through 32 years, I've listened to everything he's done. I'm sure many of you are drawn to Meat Loaf for a variety of reasons. For me, it has always been the genuine quality of his performance, the commitment to his craft, and the uncompromising way he has handled his career and his music. I'm fortunate to work in the world of professional athletics ( Major League Baseball). Through that experience, I have gotten to see and know many great professional athletes. The qualities that I have admired in some of them are the same that makes Meat Loaf my favorite performer. When you watch Meat, it is easy to see that he is out there for much more than fame and money. This guy LOVES to perform.....and genuinely cares about the performance he gives his fans every time out.
NOW...for my RANT!!!
How in the HELL is Meat Loaf NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I'm a talent evaluator of sorts for a big league baseball team.....and don't profess to be an EXPERT in music. BUT.....please give me a freakin break!!! I may not be one of the 500 EXPERTS who decide who gets into the Hall of Fame, but I'll be damned if I don't know greatness when I see it! NOBODY can look down the list of those in the HALL and tell me that Meat Loaf does not belong!!! I suspect somewhere along the line he has pissed off the music industry because he is his own man, has great personal integrity, and does things the way he thinks they should be done......and Thank God for it! No one gives as much on stage as Meat does. In the past, I have only witnessed this on television of film. However, on August 30, 2010 in Orlando, FL I got to witness it live and in person. ENOUGH SAID!!! The countless stories I've read about his interaction with his fans and the way he treats them is impressive. I hope to someday have the pleasure to shake the mans hand and tell him how much I've enjoyed his work through the years.
So.....to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.......wake the hell up!!! Do your freakin job! Nominate...and then vote this man into the Hall! Until you do....the Hall is NOT complete. There are many great performers in the Hall. Some performed at the 25th Anniversary show that was carried on HBO. They were all great and it was a blast to see them again. BUT......Meat belongs there! VOTE him in!
RANT OFF:
I'm sorry if I used any language that would be considered offensive to this forum. I don't usually get this worked up....but I do have my moments. :D
I've spent the past week on the road....with my new "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" CD playing. I had apprehension at first as to how much I'd like it......but no more. I don't know about you guys.....but I love it! I think it may be one of the best things he's done.
PS.....I'll try not to "rant" too often.
Does it really matter whether someone is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Judging by my post, I may not be the one to ask. LOL

Firstly I think this debate has already happened and it was argued to death and secondly I don't see why your so worked up over it, I mean we as Meat's fans know how wonderful and fantastic he is and how he is with his fans etc and at the end of the day isn't THAT what counts and matters ?
 IDK I just think personally this was a pointless rant really but each to their own.

Sorry didn't notice the join date ;).
To be fair, I think RaysScout is trying to find out an answer to a question without being a thread digger. He's new here...based on a recommendation to come here for Meat Loaf knowledge.
Hey RaysScout,
From what I've been told:
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is full of politics. Our beloved Meat has been nominated and we've tried to vote him in. If not here at MLUKFC (before my time), but at his former official forums on the old website and I believe ROL tried too. It's not for lack of fan interest. I would only hope for it to be fan driven. But when it comes to the committee on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame itself, it's a crap load of politics of who gets in.
The last I heard the committee there weren't "fans" of Meat, so they kick his name to the curb. That coupled with the some of the people IN it to begin with, sorta' looses credibility to me. I'm not here to argue, but this is what I was aware of at the time R&R Hall of Fame was brought up on another site.
Any further information would gladly be welcomed, if you have the knowledge. No arguements.
As a sidebar, I also submitted Meat to be nominated for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The jury is still out on that one too.

Yes this has been discussed before and I can see why people would want him inducted in there. I think some people have this plea included in their signature too.
I think inductees in the RNR hall of fame mostly get in there based on their popularity in the States, so given the fact Meat has been more successful in Europe and beyond hasn't helped him with this probably. Also there is only a short list of people inducted each year and it's only been going for 25 years + note many artists only get inducted when they are no more (George Harrison for example). I'm not saying that is what SHOULD happen but it is often the case people don't notice things until they are gone. I think the fact that Michael Jackson didn't get inducted till 2001 is a good example of this as he was well beyond his peak popularity by then as is the case with many others in the list so far.
It would be great if it were to happen but we as fans can't do much about it really.
Bit bizarre Abba were inducted this year, wouldn't exactly call their music Rock and Roll.
Who knows it may still happen.
Personally I'd like to see Meat Loaf AND Jim Steinman (non performer category) get inducted in the same year.
NOW...for my RANT!!!

I agree .. and I also agree there IS a point. Meat's made a pretty outstanding contribution to rock'n'roll; a landmark album which continues to remain one of the best selling rock albums of all time, and over 30 years of delivering spectacular shows .. my opinion, but that of many others also. Problem is that the nominating body is a very political organisation in a business sense where if you're with the right label you get nominated, and the chairman exercises an iron control as far as I can make out from numerous articles I've read over the years deploring the nominating procedure. And Meat's not one to curry favour as you say. He's his own man and doesn't court honours. We've hosted and sent in many petitions since he became eligible for inclusion, all to no avail. We've even asked performers (who are included and thus can nominate), and who know him and his music, but have had no response .. and if he's not nominated he can't get votes. But without his presence imo a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lacks something important, and whilst he may not court it, I'm sure he'd be chuffed to be included. He still treasures his Grammy ;)
I'm sorry if I used any language that would be considered offensive to this forum. I don't usually get this worked up....but I do have my moments. :D
Not offensive imo .. nor pointless. And although it's been debated before, as a newcomer it's in my view a perfectly reasonable concern to express. As you say, it was before you joined, is pretty well buried I suspect in the annals, and the fact that his fans on here think he's wonderful, and many more fans not registered here, doesn't take away from the fact that his contribution deserves recognition from the music industry (although the rather parochial HoF nominating body are to me hardly representative of the music industry as a whole).
I've spent the past week on the road....with my new "Hang Cool Teddy Bear" CD playing. I had apprehension at first as to how much I'd like it......but no more. I don't know about you guys.....but I love it! I think it may be one of the best things he's done.
Agree completely. Pure Meat, pure masterpiece to me :D

For what wikipedia is worth:
The Criticism:
The main criticism of the Hall of Fame is that the nomination process is controlled by a few individuals who are not musicians, such as founder Jann Wenner (who has filled the position of managing editor for Rolling Stone magazine), former foundation director Suzan Evans, and writer Dave Marsh, reflecting their tastes rather than the views of the rock world as a whole. A former member of the nominations board once commented that "At one point Suzan Evans lamented the choices being made because there weren't enough big names that would sell tickets to the dinner. That was quickly remedied by dropping one of the doo-wop groups being considered in favor of a 'name' artist...I saw how certain pioneering artists of the '50s and early '60s were shunned because there needed to be more name power on the list, resulting in '70s superstars getting in before the people who made it possible for them. Some of those pioneers still aren't in today."[17] According to Fox News, petitions with tens of thousands of signatures were also being ignored, and some groups that were signed with certain labels or companies or were affiliated with various committee members have even been put up for nomination with no discussion at all.[17] The committee has also been accused of largely ignoring certain genres.[18] According to author Brett Milano, "entire genres get passed over, particularly progressive rock, '60s Top 40, New Orleans funk and a whole lot of black music."[19]
Another criticism is that too many artists are inducted. In fifteen years, 97 different artists have been inducted.[20] A minimum of 50% of the vote is needed to be inducted, although the final percentages are not announced and a certain number of inductees (five in 2009) is set before the ballots are shipped.[20] The committee usually nominates a small number of artists (12 in 2010) from an increasing number of different genres. Several voters, including Joel Selvin, himself a former member of the nominating committee, didn't submit their ballots in 2007 because they didn't feel that any of the candidates were truly worthy.[21]
The surviving members of the Sex Pistols, inducted in 2006, projected their anti-establishment image in refusing to attend the ceremony, calling the museum "a piss stain".[22]

It's a question many of us have been asking for quite a while now. I totally understand your rant, I feel the same way, but like a few have pointed out it seems to be politics and Meat is his own man and doesn't go in for all that bullshit. But I never give up hope that one day he will take his rightful place in the R 'n R Hall of Fame. I think Queen only became member's fairly recently, so that gives me hope. It doesn't seem right that a few individuals who seem to have no idea are the ones who decide these things. Thanks Caryl and suzie for your explanations.

I don't think he would really, being in it does not really help with selling albums or selling out tours, it's just a excuse to hold a ceremony and dinner, just to get pissed I think. :D
Regarding awards. I think Meat said somewhere that he would like an Oscar above anything else. However, a good Piss Up anywhere sounds good.:D

A totally understandable rant. The RNRHOF does not have the same stature or respect as other HOF's like the NFL and MLB. What we need is a HOF thread. Who truly belongs in a RNR HOF?
I don't care who is or who isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I have my own, virtual Hall of Fame and I can induct whoever I want to it. :))

Does it really matter whether someone is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
 Not really, but it's a nice honour, and a validation of all the years of hard work Meat has put in.
Not that he should need such validation, but still....
I would only hope for it to be fan driven.
I wouldn't.
I would much much prefare that Meat was given the honour and recognition on his own merit (which is more than enough) and not because some of his fans have to jump up and down trying to attract some attention.
If that's what it takes, that's what it takes, but i'd much rather it was Meat's works that got him inducted rather a fan campaign.
I think the fact that Michael Jackson didn't get inducted till 2001 is a good example of this as he was well beyond his peak popularity by then as is the case with many others in the list so far.
Like him or hate him, he's not rock n roll.
He does not belong there.
Ditto ABBA.

Even just a little bit?
It might not be the be all and end all, but anyone who says that don't give a shit about being inducted as one of the immortals or rock n roll is full of shit :shit:

Let Me Clarify:
I would prefer that Meat be given full recognition by the industy in which he helped evolve if not, at the very least, creating a league of his own in Rock and Roll. However with the current nomination structure the HoF reaks of favoritism and stupid popularity contests. It is simply corrupt. I would rather see the fans voice have more weight in the nomination process at least to balance out some unfair play. But after trying at length, we (the fans) don't hold any weight so there is no need for fans to try and attract the attention of the blinker blinded board. It is solely the industry who has to nominate. Some of the inductees I feel are a blatent slap in the face by the HoF.
IMO: Since it is labeled a HoF and that seems to be a benchmark of success to the general public, I think it may get to Meat at times, but overall, I think he gives the proverbial middle finger to the music industry's politics. I think the fans worry about the industry driven prostegious awards more than Meat does.
Anyone can here can create a R&R HoF similar to what Sarge has and no doubt any one here would have him champion there.
BOOH is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Bat 2 did really well, and a single from that record went to number 1 in 28 countries. But when you look at parts of Meat's rock career he was was fairly anonymous in the charts in the 80s. In the states especially. Despite BOOH selling millions, and being his biggest success it never went to number 1 sadly. I can see reasons why they haven't inducted him into the hall of fame, but I don't believe it's because they don't like him.
We can all say he should be in, but there must be a reason why he isn't!! Us fans love all his albums, but only two of them were a big success globally to be fair. That might not be the reason but who knows.

I think the key word here, is industry; in all fairness, in what industry is politics NOT a factor? I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is. How many times have we heard the phrase, "It's not what you know, it's who you know?"
Think of awards such as the Grammys and even the Oscars- there are criticisms associated with those as well. Movie studios "campaign" to get their movies nominated and voted for. Even those stars on the Walk of Fame are basically bought these days.

I agree with you here. That's a reason why I believe Meat probably doesn't care about it too much. Yet knowing this, why does the general public have an outcry when someone they feel should be entered on merit isn't in the running? One could say the industry is straight and feel the artist's resume' doesn't meet their expectations, however Meat's tale of the tape vs. some other artist's that have already been inducted would squash that theory. So people either buy, campaign, sleep, steal, and sell their souls to get in because they wouldn't be able to get in any other way on their own merit.

It probably says enough about the RNR HOF, if the sex pistols were inducted and the likes of Meat Loaf hasn't been. The sex pistols did 1 studio album, I repeat 1 album.
Maybe Meat should do an album on which he insults both the president of the USA and the Queen of the Commonwealth at the same time. Maybe that will help? This could be a complete new direction for Patrick. :))
"We all have our own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in our hearts". ;)
Yes, that's why I don't care that much about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the end of the day you can compare it to one of those rankings you find in music magazines: The greatest singers, most influential bands, best albums... I once read a "100 best guitar players" list (in Rolling Stone, I think) and I thought "Where the hell is Slash? Where is Rory Gallagher? Where is Jan Akkerman?" I admire them (and many other artists) regardless of whether they appear on such lists or not. It's the same with the R&R HoF. It's the listeners who make someone a rock and roll legend, not being a member of an exlusive club.

They have ask me for items , I have refused. It is the good old boys network. No Alice , no Kiss, no Moody Blues. Lots of people who have had major impact on Rock. When they put Jackson Brown in I said . It is crap . I've played concerts for them . Never again.
If they should ever put me in , I'm like the SEx pistols I would not go. They have asked me and Patti to sing at there show "lost that loving feeling" . I said no. They don't like me I don't like them. About 400 people vote on the final ballot. I think it's 12 people who make the ballot. It was a Bruce Springsteen idea to start it.

I'm asking for your opinion on how he evolved the music industry so I can better understand your reasoning.
You said 'full recognition' I don't consider one award in an half-assed Hall Of Fame as 'full recognition'. I don't think Meat needs 'full recognition' at all, having one of the biggest selling albums of all time should be recognition enough. Also don't forget that most of the industry turned down Bat Out Of Hell to begin with, Meat & Jim gave a big 'f*ck you' to them and proved them wrong. You're not really going to get any form of recognition from the very people you made look stupid for not backing you.
I'd much prefer to see Meat get recognition for his acting.

WE are not through pushing it yet . But new one will be out March 2012. we are going to start to record some in march. Hoping for a big surprise at this Christmas . I'm working on it very hard.
This last summers shows were the best in years and years and I have a great band a great family , pearl and and amanda , my wife Deborah. This crazy family here . What else could you want. Oh don't forget get Mad Susan who is ready to set me straight. LOL. There is always someone ready to set me straight.

Exciting news, thanks for letting us know and I'm sure it'll be just as good if not better than HCTB . And at the end of the day what's the big deal about the Hall Of Fame anyway   !!

no ... a Christmas album of course. "Hang Cool Frosty The Snowman"

I'm saying the HoF is half assed and the prestige others seem to find in it...is not my view. BUT there are people that believe the HoF is an absolute honor. I don't think that the HoF is full recognition. I think that Meat deserves full recognition and if that includes the HoF then so be it. What I'm not going to do, is be lead into posting my opinion of "why" then you picking it apart to death.
And I would be elated if Meat was recognized for his acting. In lieu of his music....no, I'm greedy, I would prefer to see him recognized for both.

He is. Many people think he was cool in movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show or Fight Club. The problem is that many of his appearances are mini roles in movies that aren't well-known and you hardly get recognition for appearing in an Uwe Boll flick for about 5 minutes. Pelts is a great movie, for example, but targets a special audience. If he gets a good role in a very successful movie, more people will recognize and appreciate the actor Meat Loaf.

But not with this serious Daniel Craig approach. More the Pierce Brosnan fun type stuff.
That had always distinguished the Bond movies from average action / spy thrillers: The humor, the crazy villains, the gadgets, the mysterious (sometimes dangerous) ladies and the often unrealistic scenarios. I miss the movies starring Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Lotte Lenya, Roger Moore, Richard Kiel, Grace Jones, etc. They were fun. I stopped watching the Bond series after Casino Royale. One of the many reasons why I did was the lack of an interesting, entertaining villain.
I agree about Fight Club Sarge ... but my favorite is still Crazy in Alabama :))
Yes, that's a very good movie, too. Interesting mix of drama and black comedy. (Melanie Griffith and the hat box...). Meat was brilliant as the violent sheriff. I especially liked the scenes at the court with the great Rod Steiger as the judge.

I once read a "100 best guitar players" list (in Rolling Stone, I think) and I thought "Where the hell is Slash? Where is Rory Gallagher? Where is Jan Akkerman?" I admire them (and many other artists) regardless of whether they appear on such lists or not.
Yeah, those lists, including the Rolling Stone one, can be...interesting. One that I saw actually listed Nigel Tufnel.
They have ask me for items , I have refused. It is the good old boys network. No Alice , no Kiss, no Moody Blues. Lots of people who have had major impact on Rock. When they put Jackson Brown in I said . It is crap . I've played concerts for them . Never again.

Not being a smartass here, but they must not dislike you that much if they have asked you for things and to perform.
About 400 people vote on the final ballot. I think it's 12 people who make the ballot.
From the Rock Hall website:
http://rockhall.com/site/faq/
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contribution to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.
The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.
It was a Bruce Springsteen idea to start it.
Really? According to the Rock Hall, it was Ahmet Ertegun:
http://rockhall.com/visit-the-museum/learn/the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame/
Re Fight Club: I never would have watched that movie if Meat wasn't in it, at first I just wasn't interested, but I watched it and I am glad, because it is a great movie.
Re Bond movies: I always enjoyed the Brosnan era, I still don't mind the Craig era but Brosnan was much better. Meat would have made a great villain.
Re Crazy in Alabama: Love that movie! Great story and has quite a meaning to it also.

I've never looked at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame but I was just looking at the list of inductees there and I swear, if I didn't know what it was and ye told me to guess, Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame would almost be the last thing I'd have thought of.
I love Jackson Browne's music with all of my heart, but I dunno if I'd call it Rock and Roll. I'd also put James Taylor along Jacksons route.
It should be called "The Lifetime Achievement Award" instead. We have one awarded to an Irish band every year at the Meteor Awards.
Earth, Wind and Fire got inducted?! Aren't they more poppy and groove? I'm solely thinking of their "Let's Dance" song here.

I don't really subscribe to any side of the debate. I like Gabriels era because it was more Prog material and of course when he left they stuck with prog and slowly moved on just because thats what they wished to do. Either way they're a great band.

I doubt that once he said he'll do the same thing the "Sex Pistols" did that's enough for me. The Hall of fame committee has their own agenda, and since Meat has had dealings with them before, I wouldn't give them what they want now, if they didn't treat me right in the past. As the one who kicked this thread off ( and did not know it had been discussed before.....sorry guys ) I feel the need to state a few things. Most of my "RANT" can probably be traced to my job working in professional baseball. The Baseball Hall Of Fame, located in Cooperstown, NY, is more of a final destination for a player who has had a GREAT career. In fact, you have to be retired for 5 years before you are even eligible for election. The BEST of the BEST get elected ( even though the electors make some mistakes here too). Since Meat Loaf is a NY Yankee fan, I will use the following analogy. Meat NOT beging in the R&R HOF would be the same as Mickey Mantle NOT being in the baseball HOF. This is based solely on DESERVING to be there.
I'm coming to realize (mostly from you guys educating me) that the R&R HOF is a much different entity. It's NOT a final destination. In fact, I'm not sure what purpose it really does serve, other than generating plenty of $ for somebody!!! I've come to realize that the lable "Hall Of Famer" has a far different meaning in Professional sports as compared to Rock and Roll. Whereas many professional athletes need and seek that validation as Hall Of Famers.......Meat Loaf needs no such validation.
My apologies to those on here who are not that familiar with Professional Baseball in the US. I see from reading the posts that MOST on here seem to be from the UK. Who would have ever thought that???? MLUKFC! I guess the UK in the name of the site should have given me a clue. LOL
Agreed. They belong in the rock n roll hall of shite imo.
I agree they were an image, and that's what got them to where they are. Bad Boys with an attitude, but there songs were average. Johnny Rotten couldn't sing to save his life. If you want to listen to a band that has a similar style, but are a hell of a lot better listen to Green Day.

You're kinda missing the point of the Sex Pistols and the whole punk rock scene. It wasn't about singing, or playing your instruments correctly, that for them was for the bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, for artists like Meat Loaf. Punk was as you said about image, it was about making an impact and taking back the music that to them had grown to be for the 'middle and upper classes.' It was about banging a drumset, putting three chords together and yelling into the mic. It was about energy and rebellion then about musical talent.
They're not my cup of tea but it's important to really understand more what they and the bands like them were about then to just dismiss them outright.

It's like anything though these kind of awards. How can you possibly compare someone like Meat Loaf to the Sex Pistols, thus who should be inducted if they were both up for the same spot? RNR Hall of Fame is a load of meaningless bollox at the end of the day really. Fun for a laugh and a bit of recognition but it certainly does not influence my taste in music.
This thread has really inspired me. I feel like I've more talent than the sex pistols...it's time to start a punk band who's with me? If all you need is to know three chords, and how to scream into a mic I've that corner covered. :yep:

You probably have, it wasn't about talent it was about impact and making a statement. The pattern repeated it self in the early 90s with the Grunge scene and bands like Nirvana.

Well you compare the two based on their impact to Rock Music, Sex Pistols helped start a whole new sub genre of rock, yeah it wasn't the most talented sub genre but they did do it. Meat had one of the best selling albums of all time. Both are worthy of being in there but and heres the point I definitely agree on, the RNR Hall of Fame is meaningless bollocks. Thats why Meat isn't in, thats why Alice Cooper (Who oddly enough is an influence on the lead singer of the Pistols I believe), Rush and Kiss aren't in.
aka shite.
Not your cup of tea yes, it's not mine either I like music where the musicians show off their talents but I wouldn't be so dismissive of it based on how it's created. It's not shite just... different to what you or I would normally like.
It's also about the inspiration that bands liek the Sex Pistols created in others. The Clash were somewhat inspired by the Sex Pistols and many other bands that came after the Pistols were too. There are many bands and artists who claim to have been inspired by The Clash (including Springsteen). So whilst the Sex Pistols weren't the best of the genre they gave others (probably indirectly in many cases) the inspiration for what they did and for that alone I can understand why they're their.
Incidentally if you listen to some of the Sex Pistols tracks there was some pretty heavy guitar going on there (assuming you can ignore the vocals). They weren't the best musicians, but they weren't completely talentless either.
End of the day, there is No honour that will be universally accepted as being bestowed correctly. Because everyones taaste is different. Every year at The Oscars there's the argument about whether the best film won the best film award.

I have a problem with how some award systems are structured. I don't agree with five men sitting around a table deciding who should win or not. It should be the public or well established film critics. I'd love to know who these people are that have the final say on who wins or not. The Oscars are flawed to be honest not so much the grammys. The RNR Hall of fame seems pretty flawed too.
With the RnR HoF it's more about the committee who have the first say .. if they don't endorse a nominee and send their name forward that performer can't attract any votes at all, and the committee seems to be run by those with a vested business interest in certain performers on their labels.

I've been to the Professional Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, NY 3 times. It's probably the most prestigious HOF in the US, if not the world. You can take ALL the pictures you want!!! WTF is up with the R&R HOF? Are they afraid you may take a pic of a Jimi Hendrix guitar and sell it?????

It's also about the inspiration that bands liek the Sex Pistols created in others...
Exactly; if you read the criteria for the awards (there are other categories besides performers), many of them are there because of their influence/ inspiration on others. Don't forget that Rock 'n Roll as we know it is relatively young; it developed out of several genres including R & B (might explain Earth, Wind & Fire, for instance), blues and country. Some might not be obvious, eg, Jackson Browne- I don't know about that one either.
End of the day, there is No honour that will be universally accepted as being bestowed correctly. Because everyones taaste is different. Every year at The Oscars there's the argument about whether the best film won the best film award.
Exactly; just because we feel a specific person should be in the Hall (or not) doesn't mean that everyone shares that view. Another thing to consider is the first criteria for inclusion, which is that the artist's first record must have been released at least 25 years ago. Some people may not be in yet because they aren't eligible yet or recently became eligible.
Not allowed to take photos? Sounds a bit stupid what problems are caused by photos of inanimate objects?
I've been to lots of museums, and many of them don't allow photos. There are various reasons for this, I'm sure, one probably being that you wouldn't buy the postcards ;), but the flash from cameras can also fade fabrics over time (just as sunlight would). As with other museums, many items in the Rock Hall don't belong to the Hall itself- they are on loan from the artists or private collectors.
I'm a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, and I've only been to one of his buildings that allowed photos to be taken of the interior.

Indeed. I'd just say this. Meat has been eligible as a performer, and Steinman as a writer, for several years now, and each year another list of eligibles is added. When you look at some of those inducted into a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame (Mamas and Papas springs to mind) whilst they may have made a significant contribution to popular music, their contribution to Rock'n'Roll is questionable. The inclusion of artists from genres other than rock, and the failure to induct or even nominate rock artists who would seem to be obvious choices are turning it into a Pop Hall of Fame.
And the nominating committee has been severely criticised over the years as operating like a old boys business club with a vested interest in promoting some artists over others.
The fact that Meat considers it not to count for much in terms of eminence (and given the way it operates, and what it's becoming, I'm not disagreeing) doesn't alter the fact imo that his omission is bizarre, with a landmark album that still outsells most others, and continuous touring to sold out arenas for over 30 years, even if for some of those years his universal following in the USA had fallen away. I don't consider it likely he will be nominated now, and he has indicated he has no time for it and would refuse, which is understandable. But to me it is poorer for not including him.

You raise some valid points, Caryl, and I'm not quite a rock historian, so I'm not going to try to justify the inclusion of any one particular artist or group, but, again, in general, artists from other genres are considered for their influences on those who came after them. According to the Rock Hall,
"...one of the Foundation’s many functions is to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll by inducting them into the Hall of Fame. "
How would you define Rock and Roll? When, and with whom, specifically, did it start? People might say, "Elvis Presley". OK, who were Elvis' influences? Blues and country artists, most likely. Would it then be unfair to say those individuals did not in some way contribute to the evolution of Rock and Roll? I'd say they contributed to it's very birth.
Chuck Berry? You can hear the country influences in his songs. Rolling Stones? Blues influences. Led Zeppelin? The same. Bruce Springsteen lists Roy Orbison as an influence- would you call Roy Orbison Rock and Roll? I wouldn't, yet you can't deny his contribution.
Think about those we would probably consider our "Rock & Roll heroes" and their age group (Meat's age group); they most likely grew up listening to the pop music of the '60's. The lines between genres are somewhat blurry now, IMO, I'd say they were even blurrier back then. Where do you draw the line?
And the nominating committee has been severely criticised over the years as operating like a old boys business club with a vested interest in promoting some artists over others.
Not denying this, I've heard it before. But you've just said it- it's like a business club. And business, like it or not, involves politics.
The fact that Meat considers it not to count for much in terms of eminence (and given the way it operates, and what it's becoming, I'm not disagreeing)... I don't consider it likely he will be nominated now, and he has indicated he has no time for it and would refuse, which is understandable.
Again, not being a smartass, but Meat has said they've asked him to participate and he refused, that they don't like him, and he doesn't like them; maybe this contributes to the fact he hasn't been nominated? Why include someone who doesn't want to be included?
Phew, okay. I've just found this thread and skimmed through it. Am I correct to assume we can stop pushing for Meat to get into the RockNRoll Hall Of Fame ? Imo, it's an honor, but if Meat thinks it's bull, why bother ? I'm right as rain with no Meat for RNRHOF if he doesn't want it.

Yes, right ? Similar to an actor starting out, playing that first role and being type-cast in that same sort of role forever. Fine if they're happy doing that, but not so fine if they're not. Imo, Meat's HCTB is a breakaway from the Bat format, so imo, he may not be content to remain "Batman 4-Ever" ...

Apart from the Steinman songs, in what possible way is it a 'breakaway'? Meat's singing rock songs like he's done on all his other albums. To me it's not a breakaway at all. If he did a country album, or a swing album, or Hip-Hip album(god forbid), then that would be a breakaway.

Who cares if Meat ever gets into the R&R hall of fame he does not need to get in something that is so short sighted they have not already inducted him. It is their loss not Meat's
Some people on that list should NOT be inducted. Some of them aren't worthy enough to tie Meat's shoelaces let alone get into the HOF ahead of him.

Yes but Meat has already stated he doesn't give a shit, so what the hell are you on about that it would improve his CV?
Personally I'd take a bunch of happy fans over some moronic RNR hall of fame recognition any day. In the past I've wondered why Meat wasn't in there (along with Steinman as in the songwriter category I may add) and know people have been having debates on this forum for yonks. However the more I think about it, it's really nonsense, especially considering the list they put out this year. It doesn't mean jack shit. Getting in the hall of fame doesn't pay bills or have much influence world wide at all I reckon. Outside of this forum, seeing the film "The Rocker" and hearing bits and pieces about Bruce Springsteen I wouldn't even have known about it, so how does it in God's name help? There is so much music out there, who gives a shit whether or not some stupid rock and roll hall of fame recognises it?

It's the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame of course getting into it is important, and yeah I'm not going back on what I said about it looking good on a CV/Biography just because you are getting all hot and bothered about that comment. I think it's the truth and it's a great accomplishment for an artist, and worth celebrating.
If Meat was to get into the hall of fame tommorrow you'd be delighted. The only reason you hate the HOF now is because Meat is not in there, and he dislikes it.
I still don't understand what LL Cool J is doing on that list.
I was thinking the same thing. There was another rap artist a couple of years ago who got in, can't remember who it was though. And same with Donna Summer, she's pop not rock, same as Madonna was a couple of years ago. Alice Cooper and Bon Jovi definitely deserve to be there. Even though Meat says he doesn't want to be in it, it still pisses me off when they leave him off, it's a matter of principle.

I think Meat has significantly bigger achievements under his belt than being in the HoF, and has established himself as a Rock legend very nicely thank you without any need for it to recognise him.
To me the HoF is the poorer, not Meat, for ignoring him. He's been eligible now for a few years, so I doubt he will be considered by the committee now. They have moved on, left the "rock and roll" concept imo and moved into the general pop music field. Basically the committee members favour performers they represent. The only thing that would shift their approach to Meat now imo is for someone already in the HoF to moninate and vigorously support his induction .. someone like Alice for eg should he be voted in.
Yes. I'd celebrate his induction, but frankly it's a club I no longer rate, so their continued failure to recognise Meat's achievements in the field no longer offends me .. and should they get round to it he might well emulate Groucho Marx and tell them where to put their membership ;)

Fair enough and I do agree with you, but wouldn't it be a great way to top of his career by getting into the HOF? Of course it would.

Winning a Grammy for the best song or best album of the year would probably be a bigger way to top his career I'd say

You could say that, but since he won one already he should move onto the next big thing, which in my opinion is the HOF. It's out of his hands though. Honestly no music lover out there would deny him a place in it.

The next big thing would be oscar for best supporting actor imo or a Brit or another Grammy, or an MTV Video Vanguard Award (strangely enough LL Cool J has that one too ). HOF is wayyy down that list imo, mostly because of the lack of international credit that it has. As Caryl rightly points out these HOF dudes are moving into much more mainstream pop and rap-esque music. Rnb will be next on their list. I bet you anything Beyonce will be inducted before Meat Loaf is. It means nothing. Maybe in the 90s it would have been the perfect time for Meat to have been inducted but now it's just too late anyway so forget about it.

Ah sure what the hell....Any award is an achievement in itself!!! :D

Yeah I agree, I think Meat would prefer to win an Oscar or even an Emmy or Golden Globe for his acting accomplishments, than another Grammy or the HOF.

Maybe sometimes it's not the music but the personality

Can you elaborate about the personality?
Can you elaborate about the personality?
basically means they'd pick "Big Names" to get a good neilson rating :yep:
I don't know about the ins, outs or politics, but, imo, it would be neat if 'Imself was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

he really doesnt want to
Who was it who said he didn't want to belong to a club that accepted him as a member? Groucho Marx?

From whats been confirmed, some are heavily involved with rolling sone and rolling stone hates Meat
Maybe they just don't like Meat Loaf
Yes, Meat confirmed that himself. So the R&R HOF and Meat have a personality conflict. I guess that would lightly sum up the reason why he won't be up for nomination or inducted and maybe why he doesn't want to be.
Edit: added vicki's thought finisher.

And maybe why he doesn't want to be
the songwriting HOF has neglected Jim Steinman
Those who aren't on the Wall, are the ones on the floor. and those on the floor are often stepped on.
but in Jim and Meat's case:
those who arent on the Wall are hanging on the nipples of fine woman :))

Wario, I have never heard this ummmm....phrase if you will. What the hell does hanging on the nipples of fine woman mean?

It was suppose to indicate Meat and Jim are better off regardless

Meat said he doesn't care about the HOF, we don't know how Jim feels. But as Pudding rightfully said above they probaly don't like him, which is stupid and wrong on their part. If a person has achieved enough in his career to warrant inclusion, then he should get in. It shouldn't be about personal preferences or issues, that's what wrong with society these days. In my opinion the question isn't "Will he get in"? it's "When will he get in"? because I think it's inevitable to be honest.

We're in accord on that thought.

Alleluia!!! :D
You can try guessing when Tink. It can be anything from 1 year to 20 before he gets in!!! :yep:
Hoping for a big surprise at this Christmas . I'm working on it very hard.

Ok I've bit my tongue long enough. My curiosity is too much to bear. I have to ask, is the "surprise" still in the works?

This is a topic that gets hotly debated every time it is brought up. Just shows what passionate loyal fans Meat has.
Only comment I have is something that Cher said about the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I am not quoting exactly and I can't remember on what talk show she said it - I think it was David Letterman. She said that the admission to the RnR HOF is not based on talent or an artist contribution to rock music. It is based on who is most popular with the commitee and the voting process is unfair. She said like so many other thing it is political. Good for her for speaking up!

I was just thinking of that the other day too Suzie, and wondering the same thing.

So we won't be expecting to see Cher admitted to it any time soon.

After seeing Meat Loaf live again yesterday I genuinely feel the RNR HOF is wayyy BENEATH Meat. Indeed he does not deserve to be inducted in there because he does not deserve to be inducted in a Hall of Fame which is obviously inducting a bunch of musical numb nuts. Stay away from that crap. 20 years ago maybe, but now there is no point as the reputation of that place is a thing of the past. Good luck inducting every RNB artist left, right and centre.

Complete nonsense. Saying that is denigrating those that have been inducted, whether they wanted to be in the RnRHOF or not. Meat says he's not interested in being inducted, I think we should just leave it at that.
I STILL would like to see Meat in the Hall. It just bugs me non stop that he isn't in there.
