Appalling grammar is unfortunately one of the hallmarks of internet culture, but nine times out of ten, it's a result of laziness rather than poor education. Using [internet forums] isn't like sending a text message - you've got the whole keyboard at your fingertips and no space limit, so there's absolutley no excuse for "GR8", C U L8R M8!" nonsense. Type like you talk and take a little time to check it's not riddled with spelling and punctuation errors - it makes it harder to read and comes across as though you don't think well enough of the [people who read the posts] to communicate properly.

well, I think they do have a point there though, yes i'm being serious.

I sometimes have a hard time understanding what people say, especially if they don't use interpunction or use slang. Now I think I'm getting along fine and learning some new stuff, being words, as well.

I don't mind though because i like to figure these things out, and if I still don't understand I'm sure to ask.

There was something in the paper the other day about an MP trying to ban the Americanised dictionary on computer programs. And there has been some cases of kids taking GCSE's using shorthand in their exams.

It is getting a little OTT! :lol:

Blame the scientific and mathematical community. I use correct grammar and punctuation wherever I am, be it online or not.

i really dont mind people using short versions of words on the net as long as they don't go OTT. I mean its annoying when you see messages that are completely made up of shorter words. Usually I'll just use shorter stuff for

Are - R
By the Way - BTW
Over The Top - Over The Top
etc...

Going back to the abbreviated text speak,i can't cope with it ,it might take half the time to type ,but it takes twice the time to read.i don't mind a few abbreviations,but if the whole post consists of nothing but ,i confess i skip it........i freely admit the fault is mine,not being of a generation brought up on such things,since to the person doing the posting it obviously makes perfect sense.

i found a poem called Poetical Economy by Harry Graham
that has a relevance here.Just two of the verses

At last, someone else who doesn't enjoy reading entirely abbreviated posts. I can cope with such abbreviations as LOL or ROFLMAO which have become almost standard next speak. BUt what really annoys me is the people who send SMS messages with abbreviations like "l8r" or "2moro" or the ones who ignore vowels all together like "wht" for what!!!!!!

i tend to abbreviate things alot on here, sorry, i'll try not to. :wink:

when my friends send me a txt i get confused alot, n it took me a while to work it out, but i hav got used to it now.

I disagree with the article. It may be laziness or poor education in some cases, but I think that some people use spellings such as l8 or m8 or l8r because they look `cool' (but they don't interest me). I think this type of spelling is becoming a language or culture in it's own right.
