View Full Version : More detail about the WTTN Special Edition Release
Well, thanks to Evil One, the previews for the amazon release have been posted:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Welcome-To-The-Neighbourhood/dp/B00512YP7Q/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1306866683&sr=8-6
It appears the record company found a way to ~~~~ everything up.
The good news is we get CD quality versions of TTW (which is TWO MINUTES LONGER then the video edit :))) and BOOH from the beacon theater.
The bad news is: Sadly, the same cant be said about poor Dry Eye
"Runnin for the red light LIVE" is the studio version. Yes. THE ~~~~ING STUDIO VERSION.
Twice in one box set instead of the live version of Not a drye eye.
Now, You can give amazon the benefit of the doubt and say they made a mistake.
Im not gonna be optimistic over this. they f'ed up bad and it pisses me off.
Whats next? they release LATW and replace all the live tracks with their studio counterparts?
Someone better get fired over this.

O, come on. This is not urgent, nor a big deal. Neither did anyone ~~~~ up everything. Mistakes happen, deal with it.
And since Running for the Red Light was released as a b-side on one of the I'd Lie for You singles, it's a honest mistake. It shouldn't have passed quality control, but it's certainly not worth firing somebody for.
Also, when is somebody going to explain why Is Nothing Sacred is added? That song has, afaik, nothing to do with WTTN, and shouldn't be on it.

there's also a chance it could end up being a completely different live song and not runnin for the red light...since it's basically the LATW tracks (i know there's a few exceptions) it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case.
Also, when is somebody going to explain why Is Nothing Sacred is added? That song has, afaik, nothing to do with WTTN, and shouldn't be on it.
True it has nothing to do with WTTN .. but the inclusion of this, Let It Be, Come Together, and Beautiful Mornin' are wonderful bonuses and have brought a huge smile to this fan's face :)

Why would the inclusion of a song you already have on the best of make you smile?
If it was the DUET version of Sacred, then it would make a bit more sense to me. Still has nothing to do with WttN but at least it'd be a single obscure track that has not previously appeared on a studio album.
I dunno, it's inclusion seems completely pointless to me. Maybe we should put Blind before I Stop as the bonus track on the next Bat2 re-issue.
Hmm
It's more likely in my opinion that Amazon has managed to mess up with the track previews. Won't be the first time that's happened will it. No real urgency anyway, the thing is released in a few days.
Why would the inclusion of a song you already have on the best of make you smile?
Well .. for a start when I put this new CD in a player I'll have it to enjoy at the end .. but mainly perhaps because I'm less critical of being given bonuses than some, and don't spend my time examining the molars of gift horses but just enjoy the ride ;)

Well I have that as well, but enjoy the solo version best, so still pleased .. lol

According to the preview, it is the full length duet version. But, yeah, it's a bit pointless.
well i guess most people are buying it for the dvd, i think its a nice collection.
Don't forget you can still get the exclusive print version from us.
The stock will be here tomorrow so I'll have a good listen. All preorders posted on Friday :)

love that analogy about examining the molars of a gift horse. no sarcastic-ness intended.
And to enhance your analogy, I did examine the molars of this gift horse and it has a huge cavity in its front molar. Hopefully a filling can be acquired, or sadly this gift horse is in for some agonizing pain.

good point. We who ordered it payed a fair amount for a copy of an album the majority of us own. I dare say most of us were attracted by the extra contents, and the majority of us pressed the order button cause of an exclusive live version of red light and the bonus b sides.

I'll see if I can bung pics up later but they're all proper releases, one English, one American (dif artwork and their inability to use the English language properly lol) and two French.
I've got 2 versions, the Australian release and a Japanese one with 2 live bonus tracks. And of course the American one will have the 'wrong' spelling. And like Caryl, think any new or re-released stuff is a gift.

I lurve a good remastered / re-release. No doubt. They're great.
But when Dead Ringer is put as a bonus track on Bat out of Hell, or when Is Nothing Sacred is put as a bonus track on Neighbourhood, or any other nonsense 'compilationing' of the material, it does not make me smile. It is not a gift. It is useless, and it annoys me.

I'm sorry you find being given bonus tracks that you think have no place on an album so very aggravating; but that we're all so very different in our take on life is one of those great things about humanity. I do see bonus tracks as extra gifts, and knew the ones that upset you so much were to be part of the deal (and something which enhanced it even more for me) when I ordered it. But even if I hadn't, I'd have appreciated and been happy to receive the bonus.
For eg I loved having Dead Ringer as a bonus on BOOH; a song I loved added to so many others, together on one album I could play when I was driving :-)
Reminds me of when my Christmas delivery from Waitrose was delivered, and on unpacking it I found an extra large bottle of whisky that I hadn't ordered had been included. When I phoned them they said I shouldn't worry, to just keep it. I don't even drink whisky, but it still put a smile on my face ;)

Diversity is the spice of life to be sure. ;)
To me, including Dead Ringer on Bat out of Hell is a stone's throw away from Sony's incessant low-budget best-of compilations of Meat's first three albums. But each to their own.
EDIT: No wait, it's exactly the same. I see no difference at all.

i remember meat saying in an interview that he thought it was a crime that Dead ringer was put on Bat Out Of Hell for the 'revamped' edition.
All of this type of thing is done to make sure it sells, as was the case with the reissued Hits out of hell a couple of years back when it featured AFL and I'd lie for you
At the end of it all, there's the choice to buy it or not buy it because it's cheap and easy for a record company to bring out a compilation

Absolutely. Shows the general lack of respect that Sony has shown to Meat's material over the years.
Now that Meat is back with them worldwide, maybe just maybe that attitude will change?? (Hopefully Meat can look past his hatred of Midnite and BBIS in the interests of the material's greater good ).

Would be nice to know for those who would like to amend and/or cancel their orders if it's NOT the live version...
I think it's wiser to wait. Amazon.co.uk will drop the price of 13,99 soon enough. Take the HC Deluxe 2cd version. It's only 10,-- UK Pounds at the moment. Unless you must have a print version, Amazon already has the lowest price. This version isn't too 'exclusive' so I can easily wait a month or two to get it under 10,- ;)

I received mine this morning also and on the whole it is an excellent package, however it is a package I purchased specifically for the bonus content as I already have a copy of the original album (and much of the bonus content too I might add). I feel the issue here is not about Runnin' For The Red Light Live. I'm pretty sure that never existed in the first place. The issue is that Not A Dry Eye has been left off the live CD. Meat sang 10 songs at the Beacon Theater in 1995, nine of those appear on this live CD and only Not A Dry Eye is missing. Someone else's ~~~~ up has deprived all of us who purchased this package of that track. Many people on here may say it's not a big deal and we should be grateful for what we are given, but can anyone argue that they wouldn't enjoy it more with a live rendition of Dry Eye instead of a two studio versions of Red Light?
For those who don't know, this is the performance missing from the CD:

It was pointless putting it on the live disc and to have it listed on the track listing as being a live recording wasn't very good either.

I thought the DVD was a bit pants actually. I liked having the videos of ILFY and Dry Eye but the Top of the Pops performances were mimes and therefore somewhat pointless to watch, even though I think the miming was excellently timed (!).
The only bit of interest to me on the DVD was the "Making of" part where Meat said it was his best ever vocal performance on this album (As of the date of the interview) but personally for me, I would say Bat 2 was his best ever vocal performance and I would maintain that to this day. I love the vocals on HCTB because they're raw, gravelly and impactful. I love Bat 2 for the purity though.

I don't want a refund, although I do feel mightily peeved. As I stated above I bought this package specifically for the bonus features. That equates to TWO new (to CD) live tracks, the two music videos, two TOTP videos that I already knew were mimed and an interview that I've already seen!
It's a testiment to how starved of Meat content people on here are as to how easily satisfied they are with this product. Compare the offerings here to the Springsteen box set released a few months back and see how shortchanged we are as Meat fans. I've already had my rant about Not A Dry Eye, but would it have required so much effort to put the whole concert on DVD let alone CD?
I have mixed feelings about it. There it is "a Special Edition set". Great. But why is it done half *ss?
I'd expect they put someone on a SE box who cares about the product. But the set feels unisnpiring. They f*ck up the live cd. The clips on the dvd could have gotten an upgrade. It's 2011 so the least I expect is a 5.1 audio mix. But I guess they had the clips lying around and put them on the DVD (Oh wow, thanks).
Of course the box had stuff I appreciate but again it feels half *ss. If this S.E. was taken seriously we wouldn't have discussions about Dry Eye and Red Light. If the producers don't care then don't bother. I know Meat isn't the A-list artist of the moment but at least show some freaking respect. It's not like this is going to sell well. So this never could have been about making money. Only the Meat fans will buy this so take the Meat fans seriously and do stuff right.
Actually I don't have mixed feelings about it anymore... whoever is responsible, for a next time. Please don't bother and put someone on it who actually gives a damn.

I can't say I blame you. It absolutely boggles my mind that a CD can progress from track selection to compiling to mastering to printing and at no point does anyone go 'hey, this is the same as the studio version on disc 1'. Either that, or they simply didn't give a damn. That goes beyond carelessness, it's bordering on contempt.
Its a pity, because WTTN is a GREAT album, often overlooked in Meat's canon and richly deserving of a proper Special Edition and a reassessment. Unfortunately what we seem to have instead is an afterthought.

I still stand by what I said earlier in it being a great little item to have, but I will say that I'm quite disappointed that no one involved in the marketing/production of this has actually came out and offered a solid apology/explaination for the items that have been removed or didn't appear on the album. Nor has any move been made to compensate. I think a full refund for the sake of one or two songs is a bit much but maybe the people involved could track down the tracks from the concert and give us a digital download of them or something along those lines.

They won't do that because people are bleating about it on some fan forum somewhere. More likely you'd have to make your complaint direct to the company itself rather than here otherwise they won't even realise people have a problem with it.
The Springsteen box set was so well put together because Springsteen and his manager personally get involved in such releases. This release has been put out more than likely without Meat even knowing too much about it, other than what he's read on here.

As a collector I like it, it's nice to have a new "piece" even if the content isn't new. I'm also really pleased to have the Beatles covers and Oh What A Beautiful Morning all on the same disc.
Other than that I kinda feel that they've taken a good opportunity and only really done half a job :? We've not watched the DVD yet so can't comment on that, but I guess I'm feeling that they've not done justice to the original album that I love so much (yes, even Martha!!)

I received my copy today, and despite that my expectations were low, I was actually quite happy to find my expectations exceeded.
Sure, I still think that Is Nothing Sacred (and the TVBO-era pictures) should not be included because they have nothing to do with WttN, and it still is pretty weird that Red Light's inclusion on the 'Live in Concert' disc made it past quality control—but they've apparently remastered the album, all pulp-artwork is included (not as in the US version where they were made to look like pulp-novels, but in pretty much the same way as in the original European and Japanese pressings), and it is a pretty little package.
I've seen worse special/collectors/limited editions. *coughhangcoolboxthingycough*
The most problem I have with the CE, besides the album track on the live disc instead of not a dry eye, is the IWDAFL Studio Version Intro in the DVD menu.
This shows only how unprofessional people can work when they are not dedicated to something:roll:
What exactly was the problem with the booklet about a missing picture or wrong pictures? I didn't get that.
EDIT: How did you recognize it was remastered? Where do you hear differences?
Besides all negative (complaining on high level): I love thevideo quality of the videos! Didn't have any videos files from that time in such quality. Most pleasure is to see "young" Patti in such good picture quality.

Yeah, that was also completely unnecessary. Still, it's slightly better than having Paradise there.

There's three indicators—warning, technical stuff ahead:
1) I process all CDs I rip through replay gain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain), which allows players who support that to play all albums (and songs) at the same loudness, so I don't have to adjust the volume every time. The original version has an album gain of -7.11 dB (this means that it is 7.11 dB louder than the replay gain standard of 89 dB), and the 2011 edition one of -6.22 dB. Different values suggest different masters.
2) I opened two versions in a wav-editor, and I saw that there were differences in the wave-forms. This also suggest that a different master was used.
And final one, which is also the TL;DR version:
3) it says so in the booklet: Remastered by Andy Pearce.

As a collector I like it, it's nice to have a new "piece" even if the content isn't new. I'm also really pleased to have the Beatles covers and Oh What A Beautiful Morning all on the same disc.
Other than that I kinda feel that they've taken a good opportunity and only really done half a job :? The packaging is nice, and the print is nice, but I think back to those beautiful pulp-art images in the original release and wonder where they are. The package is nice, but it had potential to be stunning. The same with the print, it's lovely, but it could have been so much better with just a little more thought.
I agree with you Ms Atkinson...
Yeah, that was also completely unnecessary. Still, it's slightly better than having Paradise there.
There's three indicators—warning, technical stuff ahead:

Ehm, well, you see...
What it comes down to is that the Collectors Edition is just a tiny bit less loud than the original pressing. And if you listen closely enough, you might pick up some minor differences in how the album sounds.
So far I've only listened to the bonus content, but I doubt there will be any noticeable differences. As far as I'm concerned, the old version is perfectly fine.
(Contrast this to the 2006 Collectors Edition of Bat II, which is noticeably a lot louder than the original pressing, and wasn't an improvement at all.)
I just got my copy today. I bought it primarily for the DVD, and could honestly care less about what songs were / weren't included on the live CD.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Making of interview with Meat, and am thrilled to have both the TOTP and music videos in such a great quality  My only wish is that we could have a true DVD of the Beacon Theater concert, including the songs Original Sin, Not A Dry Eye and Left In The Dark :-)

Original Sin and Left In The Dark weren't done at the Beacon Theater show. It was just the nine songs on the CD (not AFL or Hot Patootie) and Not A Dry Eye. There was a full show from the Born To Rock tour filmed, I want to say from Berlin but I might be wrong.

No I don't. Like I said before, I really bought the set for the DVD anyway, not the live CD

Thanks for clearing that up :-) On the DVD, they showed brief video clips of Meat singing Original Sin and Left In The Dark. It looked like they were from the Beacon Theater concert, but I could be wrong.

I bought this yesterday afternoon.
- Dynamics and volume was kept at a decent level and might even be less than the original CD that I have. Always great to see that in a re-issue so many years later (even in an original recording from 2011 because we all know how bad most sound).
- The CD tray and booklet were quite well done what with the tour stuff and single covers.
- Getting the videos and interview I didn't already have. I hadn't even seen the interview before (yeah, I'm new to Meat).
Some things that annoyed me (but of course!) and shouldn't have happened:
- The AFL audio on the main DVD menu. This is WTTN, not Bat 2!!!!
- The live CD; having the studio Red Light on there. WTF, indeed.
- The 'live' videos from ToTP. Honestly, why bother?
Apart from that, it's not too bad but could have been done better. Now they need to do a CHSIB remaster with Unsaid and Decadent Wish included (and all the videos).

Yeah, I noticed how the levels seem to be different, listened to the collectors edition of the album for the first time yesterday.

Yeah I didn't get that either, but these things are sent to try us.
After listening to the album yesterday, it brought back some memories of a very good album for me though I'm still not sure why the ballads seem to be lumped together i.e left in the dark followed by Not a dry eye in the house & Martha followed by Where Angels Sing.
What is more apparent to me now is how well Amnesty is Granted works and that I can appreciate the coming together of the Van Halen and Springsteen type sound with Sammy Hagar and Steve van Zandt producing the track.

It wasn't a serious issue but just one that annoyed me and made me wonder why they do these things apart from trying to keep people focused too on Bat2 and one of his biggest songs (IMO).
After all, compared to AFL to anything on WTTN, people are going to say something from Bat2 first. But then how many of those people out there who don't even know WTTN exists are going to even pick up this album?

Amnesty was probably the first track that stood out to me with the album first time I ever heard it and it reminds me of an old late-70s track straight away bought up to be more modern-sounding without sounding overproduced. I thought I'd Lie For You was always pretty good and definitely have a soft spot for Martha, Not A Dry Eye and Where Angels Sing. Still it's a fantastic album and even the Diane Warren tracks are good.
I always thought Amnesty or Last Kiss should have been right after Fiesta because it seems to fit a lot better. A street party-themed tune should go right into a fun party track. Not that AIG is a party track but it rocks much harder than LITD or Dry Eye.

Townsend customers will be getting a new extra collectors print. If you've ordered elsewhere, you'll have to check with them.
So it's a kind of apology gift from EMI for the mess up with the live disc.

The layout looks a little more thought out than the other print, but again I'm wondering why they've used a promo shot of short-haired Meat from 1998 when there are some fabulous ones from 1995 which were used to promote Neighbourhood at the time :?

I'm loving this new edition - it's great to have CD quality versions of Let It Be, Come Together, Beautiful Morning, and Nothing Sacred! Plus all songs remastered and loads of bonus goodies.
Can't wait until my Bat 2 Collector's Edition and Bat 1 Special Edition come! (Yes, it was time for upgrades!!!)

It was great to finally have CD quality versions of "Oh what a beautiful mornin" (the B side I didn't have) and "Is nothing sacred?" with Patti (But why's that there? It belongs on VBO special edition, not WTTN...)
Most of the live tracks I already owned, either on the B sides that I already had, or "Live around the world". So I did a lot of skipping. The only live tracks of interest for me were "I'd lie for you (And that's the truth)" (and that wasn't the best) and "Where the rubber meets the road" (which I finally got to hear live. I love Paul & Sarah's songs. They should be working with ML now.)
I'm not complaining about the release (I was shocked that they'd actually put this out instead of another Bat or Bat 2) but why exactly was this released? What was so special about it? You'd think they would have done something with "Dead Ringer" first. Yeah, I don't get that...
Now I just have to find the WTTN CD with the BLUE cover. (Which is probably going to be as difficult as finding the CHSIB vinyl. Oh, you think Wario goes on about "Masculine"? I'm probably gunna be just as bad about that vinyl...)
They're with different labels.
EMI don't have too many big releases coming out so they've been going back to their back cat with established artists and revamping them with collectors editions.

Are they doing such a shoddy job with their other releases, or was it just this one?
Is releases like this you wonder if i was released on itunes wed have dry eye ....
theirs a weird piano thing at the start of BOOH.....
drewhiggins
10 Sep 2011, 04:58
It also makes you wonder had they bothered to check the second disc instead of just throwing it together we'd have gotten an actual live CD where every track was an actual live track and not a studio track. Imagine that. Not sure what the piano part is, unless it's part of another track leading in to Bat that doesn't appear on the album.
The upside, I guess, is if you listen to both CDs and you really liked Red Light, you don't just get to hear it once. You get to hear it twice - maybe more if you have the added benefit of a skip or back button.
There's also a strange what sounds like a jet coming in to land sound on the beginning of AFL. Anyone know what that sound is?

That's a tough one. If you already have a copy of Bat 2 and you have Live Around The World then I'd say no unless you're desperate for the music videos. A lot of the stuff on the live CD is pretty poor if I'm honest and a couple of tracks are available on LATW along with better versions of the other songs. I think that makes sense. :bleh:

For me, it was well worth it. I guess it depends on how you listen to it. I had the CD from when it first came out, and the MP3s I ripped of the remastered version were much bigger in most cases, and sound much better - clearer, punchier, louder, with Meat front and centre praise be! I can only suppose the CD itself has better audio quality.

You should get Live Around The World, it's an amazing album. Although if you've got this WTTN SE then you'll have a few of the songs already.
I remember getiing LATW. Only other live album from Meat I had was the 1987 Live CD. I think my neighbours must have gone mad. I played them back to back the entire day for a very long time before concentrating on other music again. And I played it for a long time again after I saw a Live show from Meat Loaf
I love that album!
LATW has no faults other the RRD and repetitive crowd noise.
Live 1987 sounds like you're listening to an FM broadcast
This WTTN cd wouldve been perfect had they not ~~~~ed up and exclude dry eye for a slaughtered AFL recording. ~~~~ whoever produced this set to hell.
It now REALLY REALLY REALLY PISSES ME OFF now that i know a cd quality version of the awesome Hudson dry eye performance is sitting in their studio archive unreleased due to the fact some idiot decided to rehash an abridged Hudson AFL. THE MOFOS NEED TO RELEASE THE LIVE DRY EYE AS A DOWNLOAD NOW.
