Bren
Bren, are you familiar with the artist Hundertwasser?? Have you ever seen some architecture made by him? It is very colorfull.... real strange, and funny.
It is a bit like Gaudi, but different. Barcalona is more the Gaudi city... ever been there? Me not, would love to go there, and watch his architecture there.
The Butcher.

 Hi Bren and Tim.
How do you go about you're painting?
Do you have an idea what subject you want to paint before you set up,or do you stand in front of the canvas waiting for an idea?
 Hi Bren and Tim.
How do you go about you're painting?
Do you have an idea what subject you want to paint before you set up,or do you stand in front of the canvas waiting for an idea?
Depends on the subject matter Mousie, if I am painting from my imagination, I wait until I can "see" the idea in my head, how the painting will look, only then do I start painting it. Many of the paintings that I paint from the imagination are inspired by music/song lyrics. Sometimes when you are listening you "see" something in the song, maybe a particular lyric will spark off an image/idea in your mind and I paint what I see. The music and lyrics have to have that "something extra" before you can do this, like Meat Loaf songs. Also the Moody Blues, I have been a life long fan of theirs and have always found their music inspirational, and lately the Dave Matthews Band, the lyrics to some of their songs are very beautiful and poetic. I always listen to music whilst I am painting, it is essential and it has to be the right music. (usually Meat Loaf and more Meat Loaf  )
If I am painting a landscape then you paint what is in front of you, same with if iam doing a detailed study of a flower, i would have it there i front of me and paint it.
As for just "standing in front of a canvas waiting for an idea" ... i think i would have a very long wait
Hello Bren,
I took a look at that page from Kurt Jackson. Looked very familiar. But it is beautifull. Lot's of water...Very nice to see how someone uses a theme for all of his paintings, and how different that can be. Alse the texture is very nice. Nice colors!!

I´ll join in with this topic when I come back. Bit of an artist and art fan myself. . .

pretty cool eyeore!!!
But about Moussies question. When i paint, i sometimes have the picture in my head already. Sometimes i work this out, due to pencil drawings, or i will start right away.
Some other times i just start painting, and then i will see how it will be, or turn out. That is pretty cool.
As for my influences... i really love Luis Royo and Michael Whelan. And offcourse some other great painters.
The Butcher.

.
indeed Tim,
Then i have great admiration for you if you can do that.......i don't think i could be that brave
Bren
well Bren, it ain't that hard. It is worth to try to paint in that way. Maybe it will be an abstract paining, maybe it will be very realistic.
One thing i know, it will be very nice to watch. Cause it will be your feelings that are on the canvas, and that can be a great relieve.
The Butcher.
Tim,
it would be quite a hard thing to achieve working in watercolour, the very nature of the medium you are working in( watercolour) would restrict what you could do/achieve
but maybe , Bren she will have a go and see what happens.....
Bren
I'm being good and editing my post :D
Tim,
..I decided to be brave and have a go at this, it was a bit scarey....watercolour is a very unforgiving medium to work in,you have to think quickly, paint quickly and get it right first go
I got a large sheet of paper and just painted whatever came into my head.
To overcome some of the problems of trying this in watercolour ,i started in the middle of the page and worked outwards...i didn't know what the painting would be like, but i like what i've done, so i'll finish it
tomorrow :D
after the initial "terror" at the thought of painting this way , i really enjoyed it....so thanks :D I sat down to paint, when i next looked at the clock...it was 5hours later,i don't know where the time went.
when its finished, i'll photograph it for you...if you would be interested in seeing it
Bren
Bren... see you have followed my advice. And how did it work out? it is very hard to paint in that way... cause it has to do with your feelings and emotions. So thinkl that is pretty cool what you tried.
The Butcher.
Thankyou Tim,
.....i just painted whatever came into my head.....it'sunusual/strange...i don't know ....i will finish it tomorrow..then we shall see
Bren
That's is nice Bren, i'm very curious, you know.
Do you know the architect Mies van der Rohe and F.L. Wright??
No i'm afraid not Tim :(
Bren
Oooh... too bad Bren. Very nice architecture.
Do you have some interesting painters / architectures that you really love or like? Just curious, cause i know you are an art person also. And Architecture is art, the way i see it.

Yes Tim, i agree architecture is art...but i am not knowledgeable on architects/architecture.....you obviously are.
That does not mean i am not interested in what you have to say about it.....If i do not know a certain artist, then i like to find out about their work, it is very interesting to find out about new things, to learn about artists whose work you do not know about...i enjoy doing that :D
Will talk more about this later...i have a painting to finish
Me back again....i have just finished my painting :D ....happy Bat
Ijust painted whatever came into my head...i will try to describe it for you but wether my words can paint it clearly enough for you to"see", or imagine ..i don't know
In the centre of the painting is an angel,on a staircase of blue and gold. All around her is light. You see her through a doorway of a building. The door frame fades and flows in to water, which changes and becomes grass and a tree of tears, which grows up the side of the building and over the doorway. The tears fall in to darkness and become broken fragments of coloured glass that cascade down the page. The colours drain and flow from the shards of glass, like a rainbow , flowing back into the water.
(The water flows from the centre towards you, then the rest follows round in a clockwise direction.)
That is what i painted
Bren
Bren
Sounds interesting Bren.
I personally am, with the exception of 2 artists, not a paticular fan of a paticular artist or style. As the quote goes "I know what i like!!"
Some "modern" abstract art does nothing for me such as Damien Hirst's Coloured Circles but I can also say the same about some of the old masters.
The only two artists that i love and would visit exhibitions to see are Salvador Dali - I think his pictures are amazing and can look at them numerous times without seeing it in the same way twice
and
L.S. Lowry - his pictures are incredible adn so full of real human life. i ahve a print of "Going To the Match" on my stairs wall and everytime i look at it, I see soemthing new that i hadn't noticed before.
In terms of architecture, i ahve heard of frank lloyd Wright but cannot remember what he designed. Some buildings i thinka re amazing such as Spence's Cathedral in Coventry but to be honest, I find a lot of "new" building s to be quite boring. i much prefer the work of people such as Wren and the old, intricate buildings like St Pauls Cathedral in London.
I also like the ancient art like the roman villas and mosaics.
To open a whole new area up: What do people think fo sculptures? I like Henry Moore but am really unimpressed by modern art "installations" such as Emin's Bed, Hirst's Cow in Formaldehyde and the like.

 Must say I don't like modern art.
Has anyone ever seen the Lamb Banana?
Hi Chris,
Nice to hear your opinions
I too am a Salvador Dali fan, he is one of the artists i admire.
Lowry, has a very unique style and as you say there is somuch in his work but he is not a favourite of mine.
There is a concert hall a few miles from where i live, has Henry Moore sculptures in the grounds, they look very dramatic in that particular setting
Tracey Emin i am not a fan of( she was at college with my sister)i don't ,personally consider things like exhibiting her bed, as art.
Likewise, Damien Hirsts work, especially the cows ,does nothing for me, it's more a question of doing something different to shock...i think...but art?.
You mentioned the Cathedral in Coventry as being an interesting building.....the "new" cathedral in Liverpool i always thought was an amazing building, i lovedthe light through the stained glass....the whole design of thebuilding is just really different ...i used to visit it often
 Must say I don't like modern art.
Has anyone ever seen the Lamb Banana?
Afraid not, have no idea to what thou referest Mousie
Bren
The Flying Mouse
30 Jul 2003, 20:42
 Well,it's hard to explain :? .
Basically it's a 20 foot tall metal "object".
It has the head and limbs of a lamb, and a banana shaped body.It is painted bright yellow.
I'm sure that a group of modern artists got together and had a bet who could sell the most pointless piece of scrap to a large city as a piece of art.
Liverpool city council made this artist the winner  .
 Mousie, thanks for the explanation ...and the description

hi all,
Chris i must say im not very keen on Lowrys portraits, however some of his city scapes i believe to be quite good. i must admit i am not a fan of modern art or sculptures. near where i live they are planning to errect three 12 foot high scollop shells made of iron, in memory of Benjiman Briton. what shells have to do with a composer i don't know!
some sculptures such as those produced by Barbara Hepworth i find soothing. the flowing lines and forms of the shapes have a certain calming influence (or so i think). however this i must admit is the only type of sculpture i like. things such as a bed or a cow or things that are a distorted version of something real do not appeal to me at all. however your lamb bannana does sound quite interesting Flying Mouse!
Well, did you know that the paintings of Salvador Dali are very sexual loaded??? In some paintings he painted some strange things, than can be explained as an sexual problem that he has. As i'm correctly some of the paintings have sexual names.
Frank Lloyd Wright build some great houses. They are one with the nature...so that means, less walls, no doors, and an open character. His houses are build in the middle of the nature. One has a tree in the middle of it, another an huge waterfall.
Think the Cristal Church is a beautifull building in the USA... don't know where it stands... but it is very nice.
The Butcher, Tim
Tim,
No, i did not know that about Dali.
Frank Lloyd Wright,..now you have described that..i know who you mean now. :D
Are you familiar with the artists i was discussing with Chris,earlier....Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst ??
If so what is your opinion of thier work?
Bren
Hello art lover,
No, don't know the people that Chris was talking about, but i will search on the web for them. Cause i'm very curious, and never too old to learn he?

I knew nothing about Hundertwasser..so had to look him up...had a look at some work by Gaudi also, some beautiful and amazing buildings, so different.
Ialso had a look at..Mies van der Rohe., though only a little did not find much visual material,so based on what i managed to look at.....prefer Gaudi and Hundertwasser

The Butcher.
Sounds nice Tim,
i love the art work on the Welcome To The Neighbourhood cover
Bren

Warhol . . .is. . .God. . .*ahem*
Andy Warhol has made some real good stuff. Great Pop-Art artist....
Hi Tim,
read this in Cathie's post (she had very kindly typed the whole article out for us to read) "MEAT IN SUNDAY TIMES"....on General Messages .....
in the article, from the paper, Meat Loaf was asked"Do you have a money weakness?"
The following was his reply:
Yes, for art. I got into it about 10 years ago when I met an art broker, Steve Kennedy, who is very eccentric. I wanted a strange-looking piece of art for an album cover. He introduced me to pop art in America and at the same time I discovered American Impressionist art. I now have the second biggest collection of pop art in America.
interesting don't you think?
also remember reading that Meat liked the work of American impressionist Childe Hassam
Bren
Hello,
That is indeed very interesting. Glad you quote this piece of text. I will take a look.... and abouth Cathie.... very interested in her collection of Art.... if it is that big... wow... Would love to see that.
The Butcher.
Hi Tim,
have edited my previous post because how i worded it was confusing sorry....should make sense now
Bren
Hello Bren,
That is nice of you, thanx.
Next week i will go to some musea around here. I saw some very interesting things, that i would love to see. Keep you informed about it
The Butcher.
Are you familiar with the Architect Philippe Starck??? It is an architect that made nice buildings... He is one of the 4 architects from the Groninger Museum. This is a very strange building, but nice to see.
Check out the site of this museum:

Thanks Tim, i will take a look at the site.

Did you know, that the (in Dutch) "minoische beschaving", think it is called in English Minoic Civilication, from 1500 before Christ disseappeerd due to a vulcano erruption???
This erruption was so big, that the city was under so much ash, and they found it completely and in tact. Also some people managed to escape, but others died.
This vulcano erruption was followed by some huge waves of water, and so it was destroyed.
But the people that managed to survive, the lived for over, at least 50 years somewhere else... near a island.
Another part of the dissapearing is that they didn't obay the king any more. They thought that he could rule everything, even mother nature. Due to the vulcano and the huge waves, they started to dislike the king. The tried other things to keep mother nature calm.. like offering their childeren. So this civilazation bacame week.. and the greeks took over everything.
Heheh, read a great book today. and saw a video about it. That was nice to see... and learnt a bit more about it.
It is soooo cool, that (art) history!
The Butcher.
sounds interesting Tim
Bren
I went to a Garden Show at the weekend..as well as garden things they also had art and craft stalls, jewellery , sculptures etc.
One persons sculptures were really lovely and very unusual.
Each sculpture was an interesting shaped piece of natural stone and the centre had been cut away and simple styalised, intertwined figures carved in to it. The carved centre was highly polished, smooth stone which made a beautiful contrast to the outer rough, natural stone.
Very hard for me to describe them properly in words....but they were very beautiful and appealing.
Bren
the men or women who did the cover art for meat albums. do they have sites?
or the person who did jim's album art, Bad For Good?
any one know?

Hi Tim and Bren, Can you help me?
I looking to find out the title of a particular piece of art by WILLIAM MORRIS
description as follows:- Angel reaching out to young Lady - background of roses.
Not much to go on I know, have checked everywhere I can think of on the Net. Even Ellis's tutor does not know the title of this piece of work - but it is essential evidently to his HND coursework.
Any asisstance would be gratefully received

I found that site on Mr. Whelan, I have to say he is a really great artist. What Tim or Bren, what are the chances of Mr. Whelan doing the cover art for Bat III? Or would Mr. Richard Corben do it again.
:?
I hope one of them will. Preferebly Mr. Whellan.

Did you hear that they have found Da Vinci's atelier/workplace? Think it is superb news! It still had some painings on the wall from him. Wow!!

Can anyone tell me the name of DaVinci's paiting, it has a female carrying a child, the child has in it's hand a crucifix made of sticks and twine, I think. Probably repreenting the Virgin and Christ...
It was stolen some time ago but it's my favourite DaVinci piece.
In Rotterdam there is an exhibition with very cool meterial from Dali. Don't know if it has been in other places, but if so, did anyone go there? Well... still do think i will go :D
sounds good :D , and interesting Tim
