View Full Version : The Vault (or Lack Thereof?)

So I was just on YouTube, listening to a couple of songs I don't have in my iTunes (such as Lost Love and a couple of other b-sides), and I found myself wondering how deep Meat's vault is in regards to unreleased songs. I know there are artists who have released albums dedicated towards giving songs that never saw the light of day (such as Bon Jovi's "1mil Fans Can't Be Wrong" or Bruce Springsteen's "Tracks") to the world, but when I put that into context with Meat, I realised that I really just don't know enough about the song selection and recording process Meat goes through to know if something like this is realistic. I mean...
How many songs are considered when constructing an album? Are they all fully composed, or are they just ideas with the best ones being realised into the pieces we know? Are they all recorded, finalised or not, or were the b-sides released at the time of their album all there is? Are the original demos of songs kept / do they still exist? Were those demos recorded at a high enough standard that they could potentially see a release one day?
That's where I hit a brick wall when speculating. I doubt there's anyone here who could confirm anything beside Meat or Paul, but I thought there might be interviews he's commented in that are relevant, or articles, or whatever, that someone might be knowledgeable of. I'm sure it's been discussed before, but would anyone have any idea if a release like this is potentially possible?
What's in the vault? :sherlock:

Off the top of my head I think there was a song recorded for Bat 3 called I Wanna Be With You or something similar that never saw the light of day.

I remember watching an interview with him and rob cavello on the 3rd disc of HCTB super deluxe edition and meat said that they went in to the studio with 30 songs and narrowed it down to only 3 out of that 30 because they felt the other 27 were for a different kind of album. HCTB has 13 tracks so then thats obviously another 10 that they have to get from songwriters. Also im sure meats said before that jim steinman keeps practically novels of songs so he is bound to have recorded tonnes of unheard steinman tracks.. So some of the tracks that didnt make it on to HCTB couldve made it on to HIAHB or maybe some will pop up on Brave and Crazy or they will just never see the light of day.
Its a great question though. Imagine such a rare meat loaf gem !!
He does in fact have stuff. Believe me.

If Wario says he has stuff I would tend to believe him.

Maybe he sold it all on eBay along with his collection of flying pigs.
Wario already has blueprint drawings of what the vault looks like here (http://www.mlukfc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16506).
I recall during the HCTB recording process that Meat said that they were receding a new "party/dance" song that was being co written by Rick Brantley and James Michael. That too has not seemed to materialize, If it was indeed recorded
Wario's sources are never wrong.
Well meats said he has a "little folder".....
And he has said he has stuff he has yet to go through.

I think the OP was asking if there is somewhere a collection of recorded but unreleased songs that could possibly be released in an album format. I don't think the OP meant a collection of possible songs in a folder that for some reason never recorded.

There's a song called Shadow Lands from the CHSIB sessions that has never seen the light of day. I've always wanted to hear it because the title sounds intriguing.

Apparently it is this one.

Sounds like an unfinished Springsteen song to me.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but yes, this is what I meant.
Well meats said he has a "little folder".....

But what does a "little folder" consist of? Fully recorded songs? Songs that have been lying around forever but never used, unrecorded, like Elvis in Vegas was?
I'd like to think that he recorded thirty songs worth of outtakes for every album that may find their way to us one day, but the realism factor in that is more than a little questionable. Hence the topic :D

Song doesn't exist as a recorded song yet. Jim says he is still working on it.
BAD ATTITUDE for example had a few extra songs that were replaced by Paul Jacobs/Sarah Durkee songs, which were far superior.
On the flip side we have Lost Love that never made it to MATLAF and Prize Fight Lover that was left off HCTB. Both are great songs that should have been on the their respective albums, in my opinion

I wonder if any songs were completely lost when Steinman had his notebook stolen. Furthermore I wonder what the hell happened to it, if someone actually has it or it just got dumped eventually.

How do you know this Wario?
I was referring to live stuff not outtakes.
You people seem to forget that Wario is also 'The Penguin'.
If someone knows about these vaults it must be him...

I meant the album. I kind of wanna hear how bad ML was at that point, because by all accounts it was pretty bad.
On a side note, does anyone think that the cover for BFG was supposed to be the cover for RA? Seeing as the guy on the cover matches the description of a 'Renegade Angel'.

"RENEGADE ANGEL" was my title since 1978. I dont like seeing it "used" as "ad copy." But I cant do anything alas...I am STILL going to finish RENEGADE ANGEL, as Im only now realizing how to do it.It started with a boy losing his virginity and "another angel got its wings."
"We hope & dream & strive
Till one day
Theres nothing left but
A Renegade Angel
And Only Lovers Left Alive."
Ill get to more l8r.
From July 2006. That sounds to me like it's still a work in progress. Somehow. Thirty five years after it's conception.

I'd be interested particularly in the original version of Rock and Roll Dreams that was initially meant to be on Dead Ringer. I wonder if they thought it was worth keeping allegedly horrific demo recordings for thirty years at the time, though :(

This is the sort of stuff I'm after  So thirty from HCTB, one each from Bat 3, CHSIB and HIAHB (Meat said he thought he might change one of the songs for another one when they did the changes post-Australian release) and a few from Bad Attitude (so far). On top of all the B-Sides that we already know. If all of those were all recorded, plus whatever old demos might be left lying around, it's already enough to be a pretty cool release :D

I think we've heard all we can from BAD ATTITUDE. I believe that there was a Beatles cover which we've heard, Raise your Hand which was a B side. I doubt there is anything else.
Meat has said time and again he is not a fan of the studio so I just can't seem him in there recording much as far as extras go.
The songs from HCTB may not even have Meat singing on them as Paul has pointed out the demos presented to Meat were rough cuts with rough vocals on them. Lately thats been Justin but in the past who knows?

'Clap Your Hands' was originally the B-side to Meat's mid-70's (pre-Bat) take on 'Stand By Me'. It was then added as a B-Side on the 'Nowhere Fast' singles. There is a song from the Bad Attitude sessions called 'Take a Number' that would qualify (it was the B-Side to 'Modern Girl', and came in normal and extended versions, depending if you bought the 7" or 12" singles. And from BBIS there was the extra track 'R.P.M' that was on the flip side of 'Rock And Roll Mercenaries.'
