View Full Version : Your questions for Meat

Meat once said he hated those interviewers who didn't do their homework and asked stupid questions like 'how did you get your name'. I would be very annoyed too if I were him!
Case: let's say one of us is so happy to have the opportunity to interview Meat, what things would you ask him?
Here's a few of mine:
- Is it true a cameraman got severly hurt at shooting the videoclip for 'I'd lie for you'?
- Did they ever tell you what the one million question was, which song, when you were in that programm 'don't forget the lyrics' with Pearl and Patti? (Where you won a huge amount for the Painted Turtle)
- What do you like to do when you're having a holiday and what's your favourite place to be?
- What is that?
- How'd you get your name?
LOL JK
- How would you rank all your albums?
- what's the combination to your vault of boardtapes? :p
- how do u come up with your setlists?

How did you pick the songs for your new album, and are there any Jim songs left that you would like to do?
Meat once said he hated those interviewers who didn't do their homework.....

In the interests of you not getting shouted out for not having fully done your homework... ;) There were some aerial shots filmed of the waterfall, the helicopter doing the filming got into difficulties and crashed, and sadly the pilot was killed.
I can't remember about cameramen but I know the pilot died. There was a documentary about it.

WHAT DOCUMENTARY
I must have this in my collection
Surprised behind the music didn't talk about that. Their documentary kicked ass but they usually go for the big tragedies in a rock stars life
It's not actually a Meat documentary...it aired sometime around 1998/1999 and it was one of these "World's Greatest Stunts" type shows, which covered the filming of the I'd Lie For You video.
I remember being at home with my Mum and the TV was on in the background then we realised that I'd Lie For You was playing and I threw a VHS tape into the machine and hit Record (good old days!). It was all about how they filmed the shots of Meat in the raft, how the use stunt doubles, and how the shot the scenes of the hero with the girl hanging from the rope underneath the helicopter over the waterfall.
It wasn't long, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, but pretty interesting.

I would defs to do my research and then still probably ask a stupid question... so i'd have to leave it to the experts.
In thinking about it. I am not sure I could interview Meat. I probably would be better having a normal conversation.. I would feel too intrusive otherwise.

Set lists take me months of think through the songs and how to keep the tension between the songs and the audience !! I t is like a thin silk thread pulled as tight as you can without breaking the thread. It is also about what people do on stage , Turning, dropping shoulders , turning your back to the audience, all of that contributes to the tension you have to maintain. M

Blind as a Bat? ;)
My question for Meat would be movie related ....
Of all the movies you've filmed, which is your favorite ? And if you had your choice of directors to work with, who would it be ?
Blind as a Bat? ;)
That's what I was thinking too ... I LOVE that song :D

Definitely album related to me. We hear so many stories about the making of Bat, even ones on Bat 2 I would love to hear. I heard it was a difficult album to make, for Jim to produce, and Meat to record the vocals. What was that like? When was the recording for Bat 2 actually started? Sorry, one wants to ask like fifteen questions here!! Stories on recording Blind before I stop? Bad attitude? Bad attitude was recorded at Abbey Road! How did it feel putting out Hang cool after the nightmare of Bat 3? I could go on and on and on really. Does anyone else wish Meat and Patti had done I Don't Want To Miss A Thing?

Thanks for the reply, Meat.
One I always think I'd give my eye teeth to hear you sing live is your version of Martha by Tom Waits. I always remember you speaking very highly of it on that MuchMusic special around the time Neighberhood came out.
And yup, James wrote you some incredible stuff. Hang Cool is most definitely my favourite non-Jim album you ever put out. Really feels like a complete album and statement.

Whyyy... I listened to it just yesterday ...
Good day, Meat ...
I'm looking forward to the new album and especially the bonus song For What It's Worth... featuring the its composer, Stephen Stills....
How did it come about that you got together with Stephen ? Was this song selected because it seems still relevant to issues of the day ? When I hear it by Buffalo Springfield, I feel that it is ...
Thanks.

my random question for Meat, which is harder to conceive? the sequence, song choice, flow, feel of an album? or the live show?
I remember an intererview you gave for welcome to the neighbourhood where you were asked about sequencing a record, and you said you knew the sequence of the record before the songs were written.
Oooooo I know what I'd ask, what do you think of Brexit?

I think there are two questions I've always had
What lead movie character would you have liked to play if you could have had any role?
And if you could record any song by Jim that you haven't now done which would it be? And actually what non Jim song would you like to cover.
Ok so three questions I guess :-)

Why do you dislike/disregard your work in 80s? Deadringer, Midnight, Bad Attitude and Blind Before I Stop arn't bad albums.
As an artist, is it one of the most fustrating things for you when the fans (a small percentage ) of course just don't accept a new style of song or a new style of singing?
I find that without change or thinking outside of the box the world would never achieve anything.

It Just came up Yesterday . Jim gave Michael Cole Producer of Jim's musical, the album to listen to on his fight from NYC back to Canada . Michael listened to 3 times , then ask this question ? Why didn't Meat do "WHAT PART OF MY BODY HURTS THE WORST " I have the answer but I can't write it here . Has nothing to do with Jim !!! I will most likely do it on the cast Album . M

In the end, you will know when its right to stop, and I guess I, or anyone here, would feel the same if they were doing something they love and were always being told to stop doing it. We'll be sorry to see you hang up your music boots but my god it's been a hell of a ride.
Do you have a favourite genre of film? I know you've done pretty much everything from horror to comedy.
Whatever happened to your Christmas album, "Hot Holidays" ? I would LOVE to hear you and Reba do a classic Christmas song together.

I really love the vocals on the album. They give everything a sense of realness - an album as you said would be like nothing else. Kudos to Justin on the background vocals which are just right as well.
I can't imagine people who think you would still sound the same after singing for all these years. I'd enjoy a live show in any format (audio, video, etc.) with your amazing current band and a new song or two.
I read that you said no more DVD's but how did you feel about the last one? Recording techniques are so amazing now. Any chance you may reconsider, maybe a CD if not a video?

OR ... maybe even a TV/Streaming 'special' (like AOL used to do, etc.) with a STORYTELLERS type vibe, where you play the ENTIRE ALBUM from beginning to end!!

I have always wondered that about Bat 2. Whenever you sang Anything for Love live and the other songs after the album release I always thought it sounded much better. More dramatic and powerful and deep rather than the studio vocals. (Not just because of key change etc) :-) Do love Bat 2 but wasn't a patch on the live stuff from that era because of the vocals.

Whatever you decide is up to you...no one can ever tell any of us what to do..when to do it....it is always within ourselves.... Personally I would say I want you to do it for ever..it is not my place to say that.
Your terms, your time. V x
Is the new vocal approach on 'Braver Than We Are' going to make the album tracks any gentler for you to sing live or do they bring their own difficulties?

If you could take ONLY the 7 Jim songs from Bat III (It's All Coming Back To Me Now, Bad For Good, Land Of The Pig, If It Ain't Broke, Seize The Night, Future Ain't What It Used To Be, Cry To Heaven) and put them in order for a new tracklist, what would that be?

The first Meat Loaf album I listened too was Bat2 Back into Hell. I was 14 or 15 and it blew me away and I've been a fan ever since.
Now my Question to Meat would be would: On that Album why was the Title Track Back into Hell just an Instrumental piece?
Another Question I would like to ask is: Will the Stoney & MeatLoaf album ever be rereleased on CD or digital? I have never listen to this album and would really like to.
P.S Your album Hang Cool Teddy Bear has been my Fantasy Football teams name since it came out and thank you for all you have done for us fans we appreciate it.

Meat, did you consider "not allowed to love" for "braver" as I could see great potential for vocal play on that song and (in my mind at least) with the right production and context could have fit the BTWA vibe perfectly.
As it is; from the song snippets, knowledge of demos/prior interpretations and fan reactions of the itunes "leak" then this album seems on a par with ANYTHING you or Jim have ever done!
Thank you so much for not giving up!

Also if you did decide to do another album would you ever think about having it funded though a fundraising site Like Kickstarter?

More random questions thoughts... during last at bat you said there was gonna be 3 Steinman songs on the new record, then you were hoping for 6, then 8. And now it's all song's by Jim Steinman :) . You guys have done so much stuff apart, was it easy to get Jim on board for this project, and how did the record develope as more Steinman songs were added? And was it a fun record to make, was it like the making of bat?

What lyrics did you change in Elvis in Vegas?
I love that song and have always been curious how the Jovi version might have sounded.
