Everyone loves a list right?
Here is mine...
(I wrote this for another forum trying to convert some friends into Meat Loaf fans so you may read this and know all the bits of trivia already)
1. Paradise at the dashboard light - A relationship in song. I often find the longer the ML song the more I enjoy it (I'd do anything for love is 11 mins long!) like a mini rock opera. The best part of the whole song for me is when the female vocal launches into "Stop right there!!"
2. Bat out of hell - For me this is the ultimate rock song. Even Queen which may have the other best voice in rock dosn't beat Bat out of Hell for rock perfection. It's impossible to ever get bored of this.
3. Dead Ringer for Love - This has the added bonus of Cher who I always thought performed rock tracks miles better than the other genre's she has tackled. One of the best vocals for both of them. I can't believe this wasn't a hit in the USA!!!
4. Peace on Earth. Another story song about a 21 year old soldier dying in a war he was sent to fight in. Meatloaf sings from the soldiers POV crying out "I don't want peace on earth, I just wanna go home", later as the vocals shift to the final breaths of the dying man they change to "I so want peace on earth". All very moving without getting too depressing.
5. Living on the Outside - A sort of follow up to Peace on earth as this is the life flashing before your eyes moment of a rebel without a cause type person remembering all the wild times. the lyrics are perfect rock fodder. When I heard the album for the first time I re-listened to this track a few times before moving on. Something I rarely do these days.
6. The Monster is Loose - From bat out of hell III, This rock track skirts around metal territory. There is a great animated video that accompanies this, though on it's own the song is a definite strength in the Meat Loaf catalogue. powerful and scary in places.
7. All of Me - from the Hell in a Handbasket album, this may be one of Meat Loaf's more personal lyrics as he sings not from a character's point of view but from his own mind about how he feels (or that's the impression I get anyway). A rarity in Meat Loaf's catalogue and although it's more soft than hard rock it makes for a pleasing ballad.
8. Hot Patootie - Bless my Soul. For years I thought this Rocky Horror track was called "Whatever happened to Saturday Night". I'm not sure which title I prefer but this is a great track from one of the best musicals of all time.
9 - I'd do Anything for Love (but I won't do that) - Epic, what more can you say? A track that lasted 7 weeks at number 1 in the UK, as well as being huge in many countries. This is the one that everyone knows. and if they don't, they should.
10 - I'd lie for you (and that's the Truth) - After watching three meat Loaf live DVDs I am surprised to discover that the "Welcome to the Neighbourhood" album is not covered in any of them. This is a great Diane Warren penned track that comes with probably his best video in an Indiana Jones type tale.
11- It's all coming back to me now. Originally sung by Pandora's box before being expertly covered by Celine Dion. Meat Loaf performs it as a moving soft rock duet with Marion Raven. Of the different versions I find I'm drawn to Celine more (possibly because of familiarity), but Meat Loaf's version has a lot more soul and emotion in it.
12- Is Nothing Sacred - A lovely ballad that turned up on one of the greatest hits packages. There is less of the rock voice and more of the tender questioning going on which we don't hear as often but it's always welcome.
13- You took the words right out of my mouth- I probably should have placed this higher, but dam it there are so many good songs!
14 - Not a dry eye in the House - One of the more operatic numbers. I've heard this covered quite successfully a few times but the original will always triumph. Good theatricality which is, of course, well used in the metaphors.
15 - In the land of the Pig, the butcher is king - Apparently this was written for a batman musical! When imagining the many colourful villains doing their most heinous crimes this is a perfect song to accompany them. The video is great fun and a great vocal from the master of rock.
16 - Life is a lemon (and I want my Money Back) - I was always put off this song by the title. It sounded ridiculous to me when I was younger. it's actually a damn good track, especially for when you are feeling fed up!
17 - Couldn't have said it Better - This reminds me a lot of Paradise and for that reason I love it.
18- Objects in the Rear View Mirror - This was a grower but now one of my favourites. Sounds great live too.
19 - Rock and Roll Mercenaries. I love the aggression in this. The video startled me a bit. Meat looks like he wants to kill someone. Maybe that was the point, Mercenary and all.
20- When the Rubber hits the Road. A great Rock n roll track. I love the concept of this album with it's detective magazine covers. It is a superb album opener (one of the best).
So many more tracks bubbling under like I wish I was as heavy as Jesus, Midnight at the lost and Found, Amnesty is Granted, Song of madness. But I figured I should stop at 20.
