Thought I had better post this as a matter of urgency.

Virus notification as at 09.00am August 16th 2003

Anyone whose running Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems, please check you are running a Firewall. As this virus spreads from computer to computer.

Microsoft have a patch for this at:-

www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

My own Yahoo e-mail was sent a virus over a period of 5 days, but thankfully that was sorted.

I recommend that you back up any important work, as a precaution.

I cannot emphasise strongly enough if you receive an e mail like I did with an unfamiliar name, address anything at all, that you don't recognise, DELETE IT!! Immediately!!!

I know what a virus can do to a computer, someone sent me a happy 99 virus a couple of years ago,and I being a novice opened it and it infected every programme on my computer.. Luckily enough we have a friend who is a computer expert and he sorted it for me, as at this time also.

Shadow I know my computer is running quite slowly this morning. but its better to be safe than sorry.

Microsoft actually closed the affected site at midnight, but some people are still having problems downloading the patch, and according to Sky news they state that the problem is is far from over!!!!

SO BEWARE!!!!

16 Aug 2003, 15:42
hmmm...
this isnt Bigmomma.its actually her husband, have just been resetting some internet settings and checking that her files and settings are ok..

Now for this virus...nasty yes...

If you have the blaster virus then ur pc will constantly reboot saying

Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call terminated unexpectedly

then u have 60 seconds...

Windows 2000 users won't see the timer. However, they might see other effects from the RPC exploit. Such as:

1. Problems when creating email messages at least in Outlook and Outlook Express
2. Visual problems with Control panel
3. Add/Remove Programs does not work
4. Drag & Drop function does not work
5. Copy / Paste function does not work
6. some executables don't work
7. Problems with javascript
8. Some programs won't Save at all

The worm also attempts to perform a Denial of Service (DoS) on the Microsoft Windows Update Web server (windowsupdate.com). This is an attempt to prevent you from applying a patch on your computer against the DCOM RPC vulnerability.(very sneaky!)

It is fairly easy to remove, just goto http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

**NOTE** if you have system restore running then the removal wont work as this backs up your files,so you need to disable system restore first..

Its spread is easing now,or so it seems, but it is one nasty piece of work, and spreads by scanning networks for vulnerable hosts,so you could be infecting many other pcs without even realising it

Because of the way the worm works, it may be difficult to connect to the Internet to obtain the patch, definitions, or removal tool before the worm shuts down the computer. It has been reported that, for users of Windows XP, activating the Windows XP firewall may allow you to download and install the patch, obtain virus definitions, and run the removal tool. This may also work with other firewalls, although this has not been confirmed.

This particular strike is aimed primarily at Microsoft. It appears.

R.
16 Aug 2003, 21:35
That worm exploits a secutity flaw which was announced by Microsoft exactly 1 month ago.The patch is available since that time too.
Windows XP users may stop the system shutdown by openening a command window and entering 'shutdown -a' <ENTER>.
This will abort system shutdown.

I am now clean.

Anyone running dual boot XP systems, if you can get a partition running ME or 98 youc an clear the virus out from there!

Tim, Viruses are created by dysfunctional anti-socail idiots with no lives or girlfriends who have too much time on their hands!!!! Personally I feel castration is too good for them!!!!!

Don't know about anyone else but I seem to be getting a lot more viruses just of late. I ahve a firewall and Norton AV software working flat out!!! Most of them seem to be propagating through Yahoo!! If anyone has my Yahoo email address, I am dropping it now, please use yoboglad@hotmail.com instead.

This security hole in all Windows NT based systems is by far the worst so far.
If you run an unpatched system and if you don't have a proper configured firewall, your computer is open like a smashed window.

I don't know how its getting past our security

Any suggestions would be gratefully received, do I just keep deleting it ?

Have now managed to inform Yahoo without it being sent back again - I just wait with bated breath

I'm even getting worried now that Windows updates are appearing, and I don't know whether they are legal or not, hate these mind games

Picked up my copy of Computer Active this morning Page 6, description of mine to a tee:-

The virus MiMail still threatens PC users. Victims receive an e mail disguised as a message from the user's domain name 'administrator' with an attachment, named message.zip. This creates a file on the receipients computer and then searches the hard disk to harvest e mail addresses from the the victims computer. Have checked out www.virusalert.com and certainly feel more informed now, lots of very good information. Clear again at the moment

Keep your machines safe with this guide.....

You can easily detect whether your home computer is currently affected by any of this week's big three outbreaks for free.

Log on to the following websites to run a simple program that will scan your machine and clean it if necessary.

Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger and follow the on screen instructions

Or go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com. and click on the 'check for security risks button - unable to gain access to this site at the moment

To download Microsoft's patch to protect yourself from Blaster, go to
www. windows.com/downloads.

Chris, I use a program (not a virus) on the kid's computers at the school I work at. When I am watching their computer screen from my desk a tiny pair of eyes appear on their screen. Freaks them out bad! (Though taking control of their computer remotely and typing messages to them is even more fun! They get so flustered).

Dottie,
I had someone send me (quite literally) over 300 emails with the SoBig attachment in about 48 hours. Thankfully it stopped fairly quickly, but the research that I did on it said that it will die off effective Sept 10. So it nothing else, you can look forward to it ending then.

I may be telling you all something that you already know so i'll apologize for that but I was told to have a system restore date put in so if anything like a virus should affect the computer you can revert back to a date when everything was running OK.
Is this try or am I in some computer day-dream???
Please advise me if this is true or a load of crap.
Thank you

Thank youIn theory a System Restore should work.

However, A virus can reside inactive on your system for some time so even a "safe" restore point may be infected. Also, if it is a Windows System file that is infected (most viruses tend to hide in the \windows\system directory), then a restore will not remove it.

System restores are a good idea and worth trying but cna be no substitute for a solid, up-to-date virus checker.

Personally I use norton, it's about 20 quid from the PC shops and that includes 12 months worht of updates to protect against new viruses!!

Scotty tried that, the computer did not want to know, used system restore to go back 48hours,we literally couldn't do anything with it at all. :)

We do have a virus checker but somehow it missed the virus, and I delete anything I'm suspicious of. As Chris says it can remain dormant, but it makes sense after the fact, all the niggly things that were happening were a prelude to what was to come.

Dottie,
going back to factory settings does mean you did a fresh install from your revovery discs?
If so, you are still vulnerable for the blaster worm. Activate the embedded Windows XP firewall, then download all necessary patches by going to windowsupdate.com

dottie
03 Dec 2003, 09:50
R. Ellis has downloaded the patch from Microsoft, and touch wood everything appears ok now.

I'm deleting all forwarded e mails with previous e mail addresses and attachments even from people I know, just to be on the safe side for the time being anyway.

thanks to one lovely lady on here, I am happy again, she saved my sanity, (she knows who she is,) and replaced my photographs for me and I immediately backed them up .

Well here I am again, yesterday evening computer started acting out some weird functions then froze, would not budge, couldn't even turn it off correctly, had to turn off at plug, then turned back on again after a while.

Nothing would not do a thing, had to use recovery discs again, seems fine now. Had backed all important information and photographs up already.

All security patches etc have been installed again., was that a virus or what that did this

I haven't opened any thing suspicious at all, I don't even open 'circular emails' ones that have been around the world 3 million times, and these are from people I know.

I have been receiving weird e mails with attachments, something like zxxxwwss in the name, but deleted them straight away, and emptied trash
immediately.

Is Yahoo vunerable to this sort of thing, as this is the second time in a short few weeks, that I've needed to use the resotre discs to get up and running again. Any adive would be gratefully received.

I don't know what to tell you Dottie. It sounds like you got something. Are you running a virus scan program? I've been hit this week with quite a few viruses. When I opened my e-mails yesterday, there were 12 e-mails with a virus and 8 more two days before. My anti virus program picked them up immediately. Have you tried doing a free virus scan? On the Symantec site, you can run a free scan and it will tell you if your computer picked anything up. It sounds like you might of picked up a virus or something. Try the free scan and see if it picks up anything.
Good luck,

Well, yet another virus found it's way onto my puter tonight. Apparently a variant on this Netsky Worm that is going around, and is now being picked apart by some very very dodgy, but nice to know people, that I know

I also have a programme on both systems, ad aware version 6. This can be found by searching on google for Lavasoft.com it's a free d/l and also you can update. It apparently picks up spyware from sites you have visted.

Beware! ..... More viruses doing the rounds:

One message was supposedly from 'support@symantec.com', believe it or not! The subject was Re: Your virus report. As we hadn't reported anything we knew it was iffy.

Another virus had the message 'Virus checked, File clean, install updated definitions' (something like that - deleted immediately, so going from memory).

I would advise that you only install updated definitions direct from your virus software website or from within the program itself.

We've had several iffy emails at work with addresses of people we deal with so aren't opening any attachments unless there is a proper email letter with it. Also had several non delivery reports for emails being sent from an incoming only email address. None of our computers are set to send emails under that address.

I had a whole load of that type of email in my Outlook Express addie but the strangest thing of all was that it was a different name at the beginning of each one, and each email had been bounced from AOL addies. I passed one onto my friend and he sent a malware notice for me yet again. He reckons either someone is playing silly beggars or it's the Netsky Worm Variant.

As I have hotmail, hotmail seems to know what attachments are viruses and right now I'm not opening anything with an attachment. Also my other email account is down while my dad sorts it out, don't know what he's doing.

Keb, I've got the Lavasoft Ad aware, version 6 installed on both systems, main pc and laptop and the first time i ran them after installing i was amazed at what they actually picked up on my system.

Hotmail is good as the virus scan they use is Macafee which doesn't let you open anything that is virused.

I've also got Nortons on both systems, but I think when it comes time for renewal I'll be looking around for a free one for one of the systems, as I am not going to be paying twice to renew Nortons someone told me AVG is a good one and it's free (at the moment).

Hi Caz,
Yeah my Dad came round and installed some stuff on my computer, AVG and also Add-a-ware, it shows you all the spy wear on your computer and gets rid of it, I had so much of it on my computer.
