Sad news today that Slim Dusty (David Gordon Patrick) country and western singer died earlier from cancer. He was 76 and bought so much joy to those who loved his music, including myself. My sister who lives in Oz introduced me to him some years ago.
Dusty wrote his first c and w song at the age of 10, and went onto record 100 albums, his most popular song was "The Pub with no Beer" remember it! he had only just finished another album, his 106th!
Australian Prime Minister John Howard told reporters "He was a one off, a great bloke in the proper sense of that expression and a great Australian figure and icon".
He pioneered a distinctly Australian style of c and w, shunning the traditional Nashville sound. In his early career he toured outback Australian towns, driving his car and caravan through droughts and floods and camping on the wayside, from where his inspiration for song writing shone through.
Slim Dusty often dominated the Australasian Country Music Awards in the town of Tamworth, winning golden guitars as the top performer.
Long may his music play on, and his name be carried on the wind.
