View Full Version : Meat and the AUS Rugby Grand Finals

Well, I just got through listening to the Rugby Finals in Australia and I'm ready to strangle the announcers for this event!!

First of all, from the sounds of it, the power went off right before the show was to begin. Then, they finally brought Meat and the band out. The announcer proceeded to talk through the center of Bat (and other places). They didn't seem to realize there was going to be a second song, so started to talk through it!!! They thought that it was Kelly Clarkson singing with Meat. Thankfully, Meat, as he always does, introduced Patti at the end, so the announcer had to backtrack and try to make up for his mistake....

Why weren't these guys told what was going to happen?? Oh well...

After the Kelly Clarkson section, he did manage to read an email I had sent in, telling him to say hi to Meat--that all of us from the MLUKFC forum love him (they just read "forum" :( ) and couldn't wait to hear him sing!! Sadly, I had turned my recorder off by then, but I was still listening....At least we may have let Meat know we're thinking of him...if he gets a copy of the message.

Wait... Just heard a bit more from listening to the radio's coverage:

I guess Channel 9 is getting hundreds of emails complaining that they didn't show Meat's full performance on TV!! Way to go, people!! I guess lots of folks are OUTRAGED!!!...

Wait a minute. The announcer just said that they can't even read some of the mail coming in because people are SO upset about not seeing Meat that their use of language is not fit for broadcast!!!! I LOVE this, don't you??!!! :bunny:

If you missed Meat's part of it, here's a link so that you can listen to what happened. (http://www.conubic.com/real/TOCaudio.html) Wasn't the best of connections, so I apologize for the quality, but...it's the best I could get.

Enjoy it, friends!! I hope Channel 9 continues to be flooded with angry email and phone calls!!!!

When are these people going to learn that THE WORLD LOVES MEAT LOAF??!!

Love to all,
MB

Hey Mbrevard

Thanks for that, and it's funny you live in Cal USA and i live in Newcastle Oz just afew hours from Syndey but we only got to see Meat sing Bat Out OF Hell then Ch 9 went to a Panel talking about the game so we did not get to see the 2nd song at all but we could hear it same and it sounded great.

I have sent a email to Ch 9 and well i don't think they could read in on air.

Cheers

Hi!!

Dottie, listening to Meat is a GREAT way to start EVERY day!!! Yes!! :bunny:

Hi, Ian!! You know, it's an incredible world, isn't it?!! There you are in OZ and it's 6:30 in the evening and here I am in California, where it's 1:30 in the morning and I'm listen to YOUR radio station!! It just never ceases to amaze me!!

I'm so glad you got to see him--at least for a while, on your TV!!! But what in world was Channel 9 thinking??? Here they have a BIG name performing at this huge event--someone who has not been in your country for how many years now?? And they cut away from his second number--from the album which was just released there!!! It really IS outrageous!!

I didn't realize that was happening, of course, from here. The radio coverage was bad enough, as you read earlier and you heard! But at least, we got to hear most of it!!

I'm SO glad you wrote your letter!! I hope the station gets SO many complaints they can't take them all!!

He did sound good, didn't he!!! Did he look good? Did he look more rested?? I hope so. This is a grueling schedule for him right now...I hope his other promos have been going better for him, too!!

Thanks again, Ian!!

Love,
MB

Oh Brilliant. The first thing that came to my mind is that I would have to send a bloody irate email from each of my email addresses to Chennel 9 over that farce.

Meat sounded and looked so damn good. The performance on the Footy Show was well below par (I still loved it, course) but that bit of Bat Out Of Hell we got to hear tonight from the pre match entertainment (all 2 minutes of it    ) sounded so dman good. Sounded just PERFECT. Great to see Meat can still ROCK ROCK ROCK! (Sorry - just hyped about the Meat Concert on Feb 28 - never seen him in Concert before!).

Anyways: I am SO pleased to hear that channel 9 are getting inundated by angry emails. My suggestion is that none of us relent until they show the bloody thing. Multiple emails a day until it gets shown - primetime. 8) :x

HELL! Lets post the address to send em here and get everyone to give em a line. I mea, as members of the international Meat Loaf community I think we all have the right to feel very cheated here.

I'm off to find the channel 9 complaints line...

Too right. At least we could still make out the end long notes of CHSIB and then Meat screaming "Miss Patti Russo!" to the crowd. But it doesn't end there even. When they went to the panel it was bloody Phil Gould they spoke to for the most part. A bloody double whammy!

I enjoyed it too, he sounded pretty much on the money I was concerned after hearing about the throat problems and the Footy Show performance but if he sounds like that when I see him I'll be a happy man.

OK, for those who didnt get a 'visual' like me, i found the (hopefully just the start of!) some photos on one of the agency sites. Theyre only thumbnails, so if you have trouble making any out, basically Meat's in a white shirt, black vest, Kasim is in the red concert suit he's been wearing, but thankfully with a white shirt (to me, when he's worn that suit with a red print shirt, although he looks good in it, under some of the lights it sometimes washes him out!), Paul seems to be in his black concert attire, and thats basically it on the band members seen.

There's a shot of Meat coming to the stage in a classic car, there is another shot with, I think, dancers at the base of the stage and onstage, again i THINK, Meat is leaning on Kasim for some reason, then there's another shot of Meat singing under blue lighting. The page might be updated with more, and hopefully other agencies will be having some listed, some of those dont update until Monday though. If i see anything more, or if someone else does, im sure it's gonna make its way to the board. Link:

Dick, Meat was on the PRE-Game Festivities, I believe--BEFORE the Final Rugby game was to be played. He was the first of the scheduled entertainment, and came on about 6:30 AUS time.

Hope that helps! :D

Thanks for the audio link MB, and for the pics link, Jennifer. I absolutely can't believe that the idiot commentators talked over the motorcycle guitar solo.

Right before CHSIB, the commentator says "there's been lots of criticism of Meat Loaf being here..." Why? Is it because he's an American? I can't imagine why someone would criticize the choice to have him there.

I about fell of my chair when the announcer said that Patti was Kelly Clarkson! Kelly should BE so lucky to look as good as Patti!

Thank you so very VERY much for the share, MB. All my heart heard was Meat... :-))) ...

Bohemian
06 Oct 2003, 11:17
They may have said that there was criticism about Meat being here simply because ages ago right at the beginning when it was just rumoured that Meat would be coming (when fans like me jumped to our feet and thought all our Christmasses had come at once) a bunch of no-brain journalists started crapping on about why we need to get out past their best (BAH!!!! - and some weren't this restrained - dumbasses  ) AMERICANS out to promote the Grand Final. It has nothing to do with it actually being Meat Loaf - it happens every year. Perhaps this year was a little worse for it though because last year the NRL hyped that Billy Idol was gonna sing and then just blew it and his roadies stuffed up and the sound and mics and stuff didn't work and he never did perform...

The answer to all this of course is that we don't need to get Meat out to promote the game and that maybe, just maybe, he was brought out because he's fecking awesome and would ROCK! at the Grand Final. But hey, what would I know  .

Of course, they never said anythign about criticism on the tele... but they wouldn't would they. Not that they bloody well played much of his stuff either.

Thanks, guys!

And thank you, Bohemian, for explaining that odd comment the radio announcer made. I had no idea what in the world he was talking about--what criticism???

Now, I understand! Newsmen are always looking to stir up trouble, aren't they? Especially when they can bring out peoples' patriotism, love of country, 'who needs the rest of the world' attitude!!

The answer to all this of course is that we don't need to get Meat out to promote the game and that maybe, just maybe, he was brought out because he's fecking awesome and would ROCK! at the Grand Final. But hey, what would I know.

 Yep!! Agree, entirely!! Glad nothing was mentioned on the TV. Sounded like they were in enough trouble as it was!!

Thanks for explanation!!

Just listened to the clip from the rugby - it was awesome!!! :P Really disappointed they didn't show it on any of the UK sports channels now. Also a shame that those commentators didn't have a clue what was going on! "Patti Russo - a late replacement for Kelly Clarkson." 8O

Yes, well, imo, that's the fault of whomever it is doing the promotional work for Meat. They are the ones that should be sure announcers, etc, have the facts straight.

You really can't blame any one person in particular, things get miscommunicated in events like this a great deal. Take, for instance, a concert; during the 96 tour, personnel told a few fans cameras were allowed as long as they were without flash, but no one could ever get them into the venue, and this was told to personnel who declared that all inside security was always told they were allowed, but thing is no one was relaying it to OUTSIDE security. I saw the conversation, so i do know it took place. But my point is, there are so many hands involved with getting a show, event, etc. together that sometimes the lines of communication dont make it all the way around to all that need to hear it.

Granted, its not much of an excuse, and i thought it was rather bad they got Patti's name wrong and then tried to twist it around that they werent wrong but she was 'a last minute replacement,' but hey things happen I guess! At least the performance sounded wonderful, the sound system didnt seem to cut out, and Meat and the band got more exposure (from the sounds of the posts, mostly via the radio broadcast rather then Channel 9, but again at least there was something!). Alright, enough from me! Take care!

Jen S.

Very true Jen although as people (thankfully) seem to manage to overcome these problems in the case of, for eg, air traffic control and nuclear power generation, it can be done .. just a shame not everyone puts the same effort into getting things right that these people do .. it must irritate the hell out of Meat who says his interest is in making things work. It's about pride and responsibility isn't it? Being professional in what one does. I bet you put effort into getting things right .. your beautiful photos bear witness to that :) We triple check everything we put on our site. And I think it behoves interviewers and presenters to double check their facts .. although sadly that level of professionalism seems to escape many these days :(

Hi All

I'm sorry I had not put this email address up before this, but well to tell the truth I was thinking i had.

The email for Channel 9 Sport Dept is wwos@nine.com.au and the person the emailshould be marked Att: Mr Gary Fenton. Maybe if they get more email they may not do samething like that again.

I hope that helps any of you that have not been able to get the address already.

Where I share your view of getting the job done properly, I find your comparison of getting a name correct with air traffic control and nuclear power generation just a wee bit over the top... :-) ...

And I stand by my critisism of Meat's promotional department, if you will. Albeit Mercury, Sanctuary or 10th St..imo.. it's been rather lax from the git-go.

Also remember that these were sports sporcommentators, not Rock pundits. They knew that Meat Loaf and Kelly Clarkson were performing before (in their eyes) the big event so they probably put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5.

If 2 rugby players were expected before a rock concert but another one turned up, it's quite likely that rock pundits wouldn't be able to tell the difference either.

But, as Tink said, it would be nice if "management" had let everyone know that Meat Loaf will be singing two songs and the second will be a duet with Patti Russo.

Perhaps an extreme eg :) .. but my point was that when we believe it's important we can communicate, can get things right .. so it's possible .. as I used to say to my British Rail courses when they wailed "But we could never get the trains to run on time; you'll never achieve zero defects. 90% is tough enough" .. if you don't aim to you certainly won't .. and ask yourself, if you took your child into the emergency room, would you hope they were aiming for zero defects, however impossible that seems .. and if not, how do you make sure you're not one of the 10% ..

And of course they are still not getting the trains to run on time!! .. :) They often say to fail to prepare is to prepare to fail .. well to prepare to fail is to make it a self-fulfilling prophecy!!
