Did anyone see meat loaf on channel 4 tonight on the 100 worst pop records? IWDAFL got to number 60 and by god they laid into him!!!!
Complaints included:
What the f**k is "that" ?
The song is too long
Meat Loaf is fat and ugly and dint even need the makeup in the video
Theres no way the girl in the vid would fancy him
The song has no meaning
etc etc etc
Seemed very harsh especially considering they had no clue what the song was about and he was right after Hanson with "mmmbop"!! I mean, come on! hardly a comparison deserves to be there!!!!
plus they said he was canadian! news to me. texas, canda obviously!!
needless to say, didnt watch anymore!!!!!!
OK so they were a bit harsh... (a "bit" perhaps being an understatement) and way off the mark with accuracy, but it's wallpaper TV, cheap and cheerful and designed to be entertaining by having C List celebrities attempt to be funny about things they haven't got a clue about really.
Getting any song into a top 100 voted for by the sort of people who vote for these sort of things... ie "Joe Public" means that the song is memorable, and isn't it interesting that the vast majority of the songs featured have been Number 1 in the charts for a number of weeks?
Any song that gets consistent airplay through being popular at the time develops a groundswell of negative opinion through sheer over exposure - and in IDAFL's case it doesn't make it nay less of the great song it is.

I saw it too! Perhaps if the so-called celebrities involved actually listened to the lyrics they might understand it!
And anyway, since when has Meat ever sung pop songs? How about the greatest rock songs ever channel 4?
Then again, I suppose we shouldn't let ourselves get worked up over what is definitely one of the 100 worst TV shows of all time!! :D

I couldn't believe it. It's one of my favourite songs but then I liked quite a few of the 100 worst pop songs so I must be a bit sad.

I saw it too.
Too many people asked what Meat meant when he said "but I won't do that" - obvious if you listen to the words of the song.
Voted number 61 on the countdown to the worst song, but thousands in America and millions world-wide can't agree with those expressing their view that it was a crap song!
I voted with my remote and switched off!
Heather.
(Also posted in "off topic" as someone posted about this there also).
Calm down people, everyone knows the media of today has no taste because taste requires intelligence and that is sadly lacking.

It's ok - you are not alone...!
Did we really expect anything better from a society that finds 'The Cheeky Girls' and 'Fast Food Rockers' entertaining??????
Who cares about a chart. Be happy he got some airplay.

You nailed it right there Andy
Did anyone recognise even half of the so called commentators?
I too was really shocked at how insulting some of the comments were  .I know that Meat is no stranger to critisism, but this was way over the top IMHO.But it's very difficult to say "Yes, I actual like that song" funilly  , so it's much better for these cretins with no career to speak of to be as obnoxious and "witty" (although I can think of a much more appropiate word that does sound like that) as they can so they can hope to get a repeat booking next time C4 needs some senceless gawkers to sit there talking about things they have no idea about.Let's face it, if anyone needs the work, they do.
Anyway, as Bart said, the song got air time so f*** them :bicker:
End of the day, it was the biggest selling single of 1993 (from the biggest selling album 0f 1993) , and is included in much more positive polls than negative, and at a much higher position 8) .
This is a wind up, right

No sorry Rosie - was on channel 4 last night
It was so painful to watch  End of the day, it was the biggest selling single of 1993 (from the biggest selling album 0f 1993) , and is included in much more positive polls than negative, and at a much higher position 8) ....and whatever those so called 'celebrities' had to say, they can't take that away
Anyway, as Bart said, the song got air time so f*** them :bicker:
it was interesting that they only showed the bad comments. A few of the people there I know are meat fans, Terry Christain for example, and I wonder what the producers had to say when they only had good things to say.

the complete list is on http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/G/greatest/pop_records/results.html
Brian Adams Everything I Do is in top 20 and there's other shocks too. Along with Meat, there is a lot of good rock like songs on that list. Plus they spell Meat Loaf as 'Meatloaf', quite cluless really.

Just seen this! I can hardly believe it! Some of the songs in the list just make me think what the hell are people on  . I know people have covered this but I need to vent a little. I'm so glad I did not see the part with Meat Loaf but I did watch later parts and was horrified to see Bryan Adams at 14. They can't judge whether the song is actually good or not because they don't have the intelligence to listen to let alone understand it! Plus I thought it was about the song not about laying into the singer! This by no means says I think IWDATFL should be in there but there's no need to insult Meat Loaf himself!
Must go and calm down now. Think of lakes and pretty birds...
I heard a debate about the programme this morning on Radio 2. Ken Bruce really slagged it off saying the only presenter he had heard of was Jimmy saville and the others, notably 12 years old didn't know what they were talking about

INdeed, pretty sick that ML is number 63 orso.
How sick... and there are more songs in the list that i can't understand that they are in there.
Who made that list is pretty sick!!!
The Butcher.

That'll be the great British Public then Tim, and speaking as one of them, I can only apologise for the minority who fuelled such cheap mindless TV by voting on the CHannel 4 website and thus allowing the programme to go ahead!

It's a pop song. . .it's popular music. . .a pop song. . .it's not bubble pop, as in Britney Shperes, but it's a pop song nevertheless, like The Rolling Stones and David Bowie is pop also.
Also, Rock Opera is not a genre, it's something Steinman invented to make the songs sound better.

You really don't know anything about Steinman do you?! BOOH was a rock opera that turned into an album! Rock Opera is very much a genre, and IWDAFL is NOT a pop song. Steinman would not invent that, he does what he wants and if it sells so be it. Thats the genius of him.

And its also on my Power Ballads CD. 8) :P

That guitar intro is NOT pop... it's spine-chilling rock!

Also, Rock Opera is not a genre, it's something Steinman invented to make the songs sound better.
Rock opera isn't a genre in the most strict use of the word, The Who's Tommy is a rock opera. Pinball Wizard is part of a rock opera, but a rock song (or a pop song) in it's own right.
Bat Out Of Hell II is not a rock opera, thus Anything For Love is not part of a rock opera. It could be a operatic rock song, or a theatric rock song, or whatever you like to call it.
Bottomline: People have an opinion on IDAFL(BIWDT). Good for them. Even if they hate it with a vengeance. If all people would have the same opion of all the same things, I'd emigrate to outerspace to find a species I can argue with about taste and stuff. Cause if there is one thing you should argue about, then it is taste. Or so I think. Feel free to argue :)

Exactly right. This song is not POP, this is Rock Opera. One of the very best of its kind. It's a unique sound, really beautiful song, with great length sung by a talented man. And written by a talented man. All I have to say. 8)
OH, and i do agree that Mr Blobby deserves the spot he is in. See the interview I believe with Grahmm McNully and Meat Loaf. Very funny. I will find that Mr. Blobby, me and Meat will track him down. hehe

I didn´t see the show but who the f*** made the list? Maybe they don´t understand the lyrics ´couse even I know what "that" means. And AFL is definetly ROCK song.
Meat won the best male performance Grammy in 1994. And the song was I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won´t Do That) (if I remember right)

My two most hated Meat Loaf statements are:
What is the"that" in IWDAFL? LISTEN TO THE WORDS ITS OBVIOUS!!!!
and
what every "witty" interviewer says "Isn't it amusing that you are called Meat Loaf but you're a vegetarian" very amusing, NOT!!

Let's recap shall we:
IWDAFL is NOT a pop song.
Please define pop.
Power Ballads CD.
That song has more pop songs on it that any other CD bar the NOW collection. . .except maybe the R.E.M. one.
It also has Total Eclipse Of The Heart, another pop song.
It's a unique sound
Guns 'N' Roses - November *ahem*
That guitar intro is NOT pop... it's spine-chilling rock!
Brian May made some cracking guitar riffs in his time. Queen were a pop band.

As I think what Rob is trying to get at the problem here is what is the definition of 'pop'. My understanding is that the word 'pop' originally came from the word 'popular'. So if something was described as 'pop' it simply meant it was popular. Now of course 'pop' has come to mean the sort of stuff produced by Britney Spears and Westlife. So it is possible to describe something as 'rock' and 'pop' if you are using the first definition of pop.

Yes. . . that's it. People are confusing the word 'pop' meaning mainstream popular music (which would include Meat Loaf) with the b4stardised form used to describe Britney Spear's output.
OFF TOPIC
And am I sensing a mass repulsion of 'pop' music simply because it's is just that? If it's a good pop song just like it because of that, don't just dismiss it as "chart pap". For exapmle, Ms. Spears's first few singles were incredibly catchy and well put together, as were a few songs on this list, Wannabe for example. As it happens, I think The Spice Girls relesed some of the best pop singles of the late nineties.
Embrace the pop people!

Well, regardless of whether one would define it as pop or rock, it's still a brilliant song...and in so far as 'that chick would never fancy him' 1- he's a sex icon, 2- both Leslie AND Deborah are GORGEOUS women, 3-what does that have to do with whether you like the song or not?
Meat Loaf's hot, the media people just haven't figured it out yet (poor archetypical dears!)
By the way, what's up with the 'Canadian Blubber butt' bit??? I don't think anybody else has brought this up yet--- but....Were they insinuating that Meat Loaf is Canadian??? I've never heard THAT one before- sometimes people have wrongfully assumed he was from the UK, but Canada??? What show was this on, and do they have a map
incidentally- yay Canada! We're cooler by mistaken identity
let's get things in perspective here, this poll was voted for by the public.
the majority of people who are daft enough to vote for this rubbish are between 16-30yrs old(harris survey 2003)so End of the day, it was the biggest selling single of 1993 (from the biggest selling album 0f 1993) , and is included in much more positive polls than negative, and at a much higher position
when it was released the average age of the people who voted was 14yrs old
so it comes to this
when in 1993 (afl)was released all the voters and so called music experts were at that time more bothered about trying to get laid behind the bike shed's with their b&h ciggies
and jimmy savile was wondering if he wuold ever get laid again
(do you ever think why he has allways got a big fat cigar in his mouth???)
let them think what they want!
we know better*****

I never thought about "pop" coming from "popular". I think it's cos it really has become the word to describe stuff like Britney etc, and when I hear pop I immediatly think of stuff like that and think puke, unless it's old pop, I can handle old pop, it's just all this new tripe in the charts that bothers me.
I saw Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video the other day....It's pop as in popular, cos they were really popular, but not in genre, genre's more rock/hard rock.
So...in that poll, did they mean pop genre wise or popular wise? If they meant popular wise, well, it was a popular song, being the best selling single of the year. It must have been popular if I knew the title and performer of it, being six at the time!!!! I think also when they added the word "worst" to it, and the comments made about both the song and Meat got me annoyed. If they meant pop as in genre, then those comments added insult to injury!
Meat Loaf
Born: IN Dallas(I beieve) Texas, America, United States. You must be able to tell by his accent.
He said once, "Once your a texan, your always a texan."

Oh yes, I know that he was born in Dallas, Texas (Baylor hospital to be exact, according to his bio) I was just commenting on how odd it was to suggest he was Canadian!!!
