I just saw a commercial now, on how image is important, to be a star. I was wondering what everyone here thinks? I don't think it is personally, I would go with the voice, imo.

Personally I think the song is the most important part.

However in this era of cheesy pop and mass-marketing orientated bands, it is sadly becoming the case where artists who do not have the right look are not given a chance!!!!

RSG, I guess it's a mix of voice, look, attitude, charisma, great music and great lyrics... but above all... humility! ;)

I think it should, and used to, be the song, lyrics and voice. But today, I think it's the look. How many people are famous that can't sing live because they're horrible? They rely on studio mixing to make their voices sound good, and they're dressed like street tramps. But they sell a lot of records.

Well what about Michelle McManue?? Winner of pop idol.

Not all about looks ( although she is ok), but what a great voice :D

What's Pop Idol? Is it anything like American Idol (I think that's what it's called). Anyway, good for her.

Pop Idol is the original format for this show, the Americans copied it.

Anyway, to be a music star:
You need a gimmick.
You need a look, something that makes you stand out.
You need an interesting sound.
Lyrics aren't nearly as important as people make out. If you've got great lyrics, all the better, but they're not the most important thing.

I think that Michelle Macmanus or whatever her name is , is coming at it in the wrong approach!! She's like i think that image isn't important and I dont care that i'm fat! She's saying all these things but she doesnt make people believe. Now Meat, on the other hand, he uses it as a weapon!! Meat loaf kicks ass for god sake!! He's large and incharge!!! He's larger than life!! and he makes you believe!!!

If image really didn't matter, then she [McManus] wouldn't have won. It's all about the hype.

You need a perfect combination of great voice, lyrics and music. Thatīs all you need.

To be honest I don't even think you need a great voice nowadays. That is if you want to make "real" music. To sing pop on the radio your voice needs to be appealing. But to prove my point:
Lou Reed
Bob Dylan
Beck
Moby
Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips)
Liam Ghallagher
Morrissey (yes I admit it. . .)
and to some extent, Thom Yorke.

All these people have absolutely awful singing voices, but their sound is so unique it doesn't matter.
Again this is my opinion, do with it what you will.
