View Full Version : 151 best rock lyricists of all time!
http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_lyricists.html
ALL I can say is thank goodness for 151!
This is the supposed list for the top 151 rock lyricists of all time. Frankly I find these top whatever things rather annoying but I found this on another board, and thought it was quite relating too. I wish people would just get the name Meat Loaf spelled right.

I can't believe Jim Steinman is only number 151 8O
Some of the people rated above him are nowhere near being in the same league as him.
For example, Rob Halford of Judas Priest !! I mean, come on. How difficult can it be to write lyrics like this:-
"Feels as though nobody cares
If I live or die
So I might as well begin
To put some action into my life
Breaking the law
Breaking the law
Breaking the law
Breaking the law
Breaking the law
Breaking the law"
Those lyrics are better than Bat Out of Hell ??????

No 21. WOO-HOO! He deserves be be higher though.
Brian Wilson wrote less than half of the Beach Boys lyrics and he gets a higher position than someone who once wrote:
"Nothing's changed
I still love you, oh, I still love you
...Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love
I was delayed, I was way-laid
An emergency stop
I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough to make
A shy, bald, buddhist reflect
And plan a mass murder
Who said lied I'd to her ? "
I think not.
Steinman does indeed deserve to be higher also.
Lists like this are worthless anyway.

I really can't believe that! I am truly baffled.
Who put this list together, I mean yes some lyricists are justified within the list. But for Jim being that low it really is unbelievable!!
The only assumption I can make is that they have categorised most of Jim's songs as love songs instead of rock?
But come on, 151? Without being biased I think that he should be up there in the single figures - not triple!!
And another point Bob Dylan no1!!!!
Yeah that's right , he probably should be no1......but not in a ranking for rock lyricist!!

I think Jim in single digits is going a bit far. His lyrics have always been second to his music.
Jimmy would never get high in a list like that because he's not known as anything but the guy who writes Meat Loaf's songs. Thats the problem both Jim and Meat have, they are considered a double act. "Whats the point with Morcombe without Wise?".
If people realised that Jimmy wrote all of Bat 1 and Bat 2, most of Bonnie Tylers hits, It's All Coming Back To Me Now and (here's the kicker)... No Matter What (tho, obviously they would need to hear the Original version (Meat's)).
If people realised the other songs he's done are actually him, he might get more credit :) But I guess, Lyrics are a opinion based thing, somepeople don't want meaningful and well-tendered lyrics. :)
On a side-note: I haven't crossed a single person who prefers Boyzone's NMW in comparision to Meat's :) Even one guy hates Meat Loaf, but had to conceed he really liked No Matter What! ... credit were credit's due! :)

And Bernie Taupin is only 76!!!!! Not fair ... but he suffers from the same problem Jimmy does. People don't really know who he is.
Plus, I have to say I agree with the person who said Jon Bon Jovi hasn't written anything worthy of getting him onto such a list. I submit the following: "I just wanna live while I'm alive" from It's My Life. It's a catchy song and I tend to find myself listening to it when it comes on the radio, but I'm ashamed of liking a song with that line in it
Stupid lists...

I totally agree about the steinman thing - The problem with Jim's work is that people are not aware of the fact that he wrote the songs. Regardless of who the artist is most of the time people just assume that they wrote it and wouldn't really take the time to find out who actually did. So like with Meat Loaf - there's a lot of people who think he writes the stuff. Jim's not really the one in the public eye.
Hmmm...not the order I would have chosen

I was thrilled to find John & Paul among the top 10. :D But I don't think you can actually put all songwriters into an order; I think they are/were all great in their own ways. :D
