View Full Version : Peel out vs. Rebel without a clue
Does anybody here hear the same melody in: " my body is the car, my soul is the ignition (...)" and " (...) from Dirty Harry to Madonna i've been learning all the roles" ?
And the intro from Rebel without a clue is similar with You took the words right out of my mouth! Same pianochords if you ask me!

Haha! The opening chords are also: "The future just ain't what it used to be / it's never gonna be like it was..." from the last song on Pandora's Box Original Sin. If you want further trivia: "It was a hot summer night and the beach was burning / there was fog crawling over the sand..." has the exact same melody as "If I could only find the words then I would right it all down / If I could only find a voice I would speak..." READ 'EM AND WEEP is either a subconscious (or nasty CONSCIOUS) recycling of the verse from TOOK THE WORDS. The instrumental in HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is a faster version of the frantic instrumental from the original, much slower and menacing version of ALL REVVED UP. Stark Raving Love has the same intro as HOLDING OUT. Also: the part about "I wanna go on the red..." from PEEL OUT was entirely recycled (full in tact) for REBEL WITHOUT A CLUE, but never used in the song. Incidentally, it's printed with the lyrics on the LP version. The piano intro from MORE THAN YOU DESERVE is exactly the same as the one from FUTURE AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE. What's the deal? I wonder..... Steinman just likes regurgitating. I wish he'd stop.
Yes i know bout the other songs but these things i mentioned i just found out myself. No why he should stop? I think its funny.

It's annoying the way he constantly recycles. Why can't he just write something new? Are you aware that 80% of TANZ DER VAMPIRE comes from older and unstaged Steinman projects? Both NEVERLAND and RHINEGOLD are apparent in the score, as well as the two major highlights from THE CONFIDENCE MAN and the obvious numbers from Bonnie Tyler and Pandora's Box. To be honest, I'm fed up with it all. I heard MORE THAN YOU DESERVE and CONFIDENCE MAN (two musicals by Jim) then I heard the film score to A SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. Jim had recycled all the greater songs from those musicals to comprise that particular film-score. THE STORM comes from HYMN TO FIRE in THE DREAM ENGINE. It's almost embarrasing. Everything he's written has come from somewhere else, and he doesn't even bother to keep the ORIGINALS discreet either. Andrew Lloyd Webber is just as bad - but at leasts he takes the tunes from his un-produced musicals. I just wish Steinman would write something original for a change, and not recycle everything. I truly hope that BATMAN and BAT 3 do NOT have pre-existing material. It would be such a shame. If I am mistaken, the 4 new songs for BAT 2 was the last time he's written something ENTIRELY new (even though I'D DO ANYTHING was recycled from an un-produced symphony with ASIA)
Indeed, after 1993 he did not write something spectacular or somehting really new. I agree with you that its embarrising. And to be honest i was very disappointed to found out that bat 2 had only 4 new songs back in 1993. And i had waited 7 years for that album!
But if you ask me, bout bat 3. Well there was some talk here about Renegade ANgel, wll, i think its gonna be on bat 3. And maybe Who needs the young? who knows?

Renegade Angel was the original version of Bad For Good
Renegade Angel was also the original Objects in the Rear View Mirror
I wonder what it'll be this time?
As for 'Who Needs the Young' - Jim already recycled it into TANZ. Sorry. It's a good song, but there's no point now. It would just be another frustrating recycle. Perhaps if they added it for a bonus track?

I used to think that everything on BAT 2 was original. Then I found this CD called BAD FOR GOOD. At first, I thought it was Steinman having a go at the BAT 2 songs for BAT 2 promotion - then I bought it and realized it sounded much older. Later I would learn HALF of the songs on BAT 2 were 12 years old at the time. And then, my discovery of PANDORA'S BOX. I'm just thankful that I'D DO ANYTHING was original. Say, do you think that BAT 3 will have a big hit like I'D DO ANYTHING? I'll be waiting for it... Nice to know that you're old enough for the SECOND WAIT. What was it like for BAT 2?

the whole recycling thing is strange. There were quite a few lines in Whistle Down the Wind that were straight out of old songs. I didn't realise it with Bat 2 until I bought some of the singles and they had jim singing on them. I wouldn't buy a Steinman record cos I don't like him singing so I wouldn't be bothered if he duplicated more songs cos I've not heard the originals anyway.
INice to know that you're old enough for the SECOND WAIT. What was it like for BAT 2?
bat 2 came out on Monday 6th september 1993. it was a sunny day. The shops were open here at 13:00 Pm. I was probably the first in holland who had the record!!! I told the woman in the shop that i had waited for this moment for such along time. I had knowns already since February 1993 the release of bat 2. Meat hosted a show for about a week on MTV in february 1993. The show was called MTV's Most Wanted and there he told it. I run up and down the stairs, so happy i was!
When i got the record from the shop, i read the song titles on the back and at that point i was disappointed about the older tracks. But honestly i was very excited about the whole thing. And a few weeks later he was at number one everywhere and that was very special cause i had the feeling that i was always the only fan on the planet.
The recycling stuff is not bothering me cause you hardly notice it. and it is well done. Only bad for Good sounds like Born tu Run from Springsteen and that is bothering me more.

Great questions,
I think if it gets promoted right, it sure to have a big hit! When CHSIB came out, I saw just one interview here in Canada. It was in Toronto, it was poorly advertised here, thats why I am trying so hard to get the point across of a great record, but it ain't workin :(
There is a great chance it will have a big hit, it is supposed to have all new material too, really interesting :)

I can't wait for Bat 3 although I still haven't heard the press release. They should do all new songs for it. But I think there should also be a 2nd CD full of Steinman songs that Meat has not had a chance to do yet.
Eg It's All Coming Back, Loving You's a dirty job, Unsettled Scores, MAking Love out of nothing at all etc etc.

A genius in advance of his time.

I think it would be a shame not to recycle Bad For Good.
Meat used to sing it live and he sounded great.
IMO there's nothing wrong with recycling songs - especially when they are as amazing as Jim's are...
All songwriters have their songcatalogues containing material they exploit in different ways...
Someone wrote about having 2 cds for Bat III. I personally think it is a very good idea. One cd with unreleased tracks (such as Bad For Good, Dance In My Pants...) and one cd with brand new stuff. All with Meat's vocals of course.
Jim and Meat have 3 years of hard work and reflection before Bat I 30th anniversary! :))

If you've heard as much Stein-music as I have, it gets very tiring. For example, picture a 3-hour gothic rock opera comprising all the greatest moments from the last 30 years of Jim's musical and recording life. The new versions may sound a 100x better, but I WOULD (ideally) like to hear something new. Even GARBO had the odd snatches... Has anyone here heard the film score of Jim's SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS? -- But anyway. I've heard so much of his music, to the point I really wouldn't be able to stand him doing MORE recycling. Does anyone understand this feeling?
Well, i am sorry but Jim Steinman music is never boring me. I have been a fan for 20 years and it is the best i have ever heard and ever will hear.

I'm sure his writing as much new material as he is capable of and your boasting isn't gonna make the situation any better. Personally I'm thankful of any golden nugget given and don't mind hearing the same stuff again as long as it's done better than earlier. A song is indeed a terrible thing to waste.
IMHO: SCOF is great, Garbo nothing that spectacular.

I know the Small Cirlcle Of Friends Soundtrack. There's a site where you can download it from. There is For Sarah and Loving You's A Dirty Job and other great Jim stuff.
But go back to the original title. Did you know that the intro of Rebel Without The Clue is similar than the intro of Turn The Beat Around by Gloria Estefan. She sang this No.1. hit in 1989. It's a copy and Jim and Bonnie said nothing!!!
Oh yeah! I'm waiting new songs too to Bat3!!!

OMG! You're right. "Turn the beat around... da-da / da-da / da da da..." You're absolutely right. Thanks for pointing that out, W.O.H.
