This In reply To The Other Thred "whats evryone's Top five songs." But this is about youe top five musicals and why. I am as far as i know the only one i know who likes them so tell us what thay are and why if there is a reson. :D


Mine are

1.Hairspary

This Is my top one because it is about three girls trying to make it big in acting (Like Me) and it has a really good story line and song's

2.Little Shop Of horrors

This is about an alian plant which try's to take over the world!!!!!!!! and it has some brilliant music and songs

3.the Rocky Horror show

Becuse it had Meat in and is a cult classic

4.Grease

Because it is the Gratest musical ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5. Sweet Charity

I like this just becuse of the film and the girls in "Big Spender" :D

How do i narrow it down to five!!

In no paticular order!!

Les miserables - fantastic. The death of Gavroche was one of the most poignant scenes I ahve ever seen. I would love to have been at the 10th anniversary concert at The Albert Hall to see it.

Miss Saigon - Tremendous, when I last saw this the entire theatre was in tears as Kim shot herself to give her sona better chance in life.

Blood Brothers - again a very moving show. Especially Tell me It's Not True.

Buddy - The first musical to feature pop music in it. Fantastic show, very upbeat.

Jesus Christ Superstar - A classic.

I ahve deliberately not included shows like Mamma Mia as, although they are good shows, I am not a fan of shows that don't use original songs but instead recycle former hits.

Also I have not seen a lot of the classics like phantom and Evita......yet.

I will admit to musicals being a bit of a passion of mine. I have dozens of cast recoding CD's and know the words to many of them !!!!! :oops:

Well, I can only judge from what I've seen, so my 4 favorite stagemusicals are:

1. Tanz Der Vampire
Fantanztic. Undoubtedly the best one I've seen. Or is it just that Jimmy has written it :)

2. Whistle Down The Wind
I semi-specially went to London for this one. Great lyrics, and the music isn't too bad either. Best performance of "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" I've heard so far, and then there's songs like "Unsettled Scores", "Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts" and "The Nature Of The Beast"

3. Phantom Of The Opera
The first one I've seen (in the Dutch version).

4. Miss Saigon
Since I've only seen four, this is the last one. Not too bad either.

As for film/TV-musicals, in no particular order and without explanation:

Moulin Rouge!
Buffy, The Musical (an episode of the Buffy Series)
Jesus Christ Superstar ain't that bad either, but that's it, basically.

The Rocky Horror Show - I've seen it on stage. Fantastic.
Oliver! - Because I was in a production of it.
Hair - The songs are amazing.
Guys & Dolls - Because I was in a production of it.

2. Once On This Island / Don't Stop The Carnivale [tie] (the sounds of the islands play so well on the stage - Once On This Island has some of the most beautiful steel drums I have ever heard and Don't Stop The Carnivale features music and lyrics by the American icon Jimmy Buffett - both are masterpieces)
3. RENT (the most accruate account of growing up in the era that I grew up in)
4. The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (much better than the movie)
5. Wicked (simply perfection)

But the best will be mine what is: 2001 - The Space Odyssey!

4. Cats - I recognise lots of my cats in it

5 - We Will Rock You - Rock saves world. And its got Queen music in it 8)

Another meat Loaf connection.
Ted Neeley who plays the title roll was a backing singer for Meat on the 82 tour, and features in the tour book and the video for I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us (he's the slightly dodgy looking Charlie Bronson lookalike).He also co wrote If you Really Want To from MATLAF.
Anyway, awesome musical and a fantastic performance by Mr Neeley.He has a great gravely voice, and the BEST falsetto i've ever heard.He makes Barry Gibb sound like Barry White 8O
A great blend of songs.A very emotional song is when Jesus is asking God why he should die, and if it would do any good.Then not long after we're treated to King Herrod and his court who are all as camp as a boy scout jambourie :lmao: Played stricly for laughs.
If you can get past the slightly dodgy seventies style, this is one to watch.

BTW: If you do watch it, look out at the end when the cast and crew are getting back on the bus.The guy who plays Judas is looking round trying to look very deep and thoughtful and he nearly falls off the bus when it pulls away :lmao:

3.Phantom Of The Opera.
I've never actually seen this on stage of video, but I have a great recording staring Graham Bickley (also known as the second bloke to play Joey Boswell in Bread) as The Phantom.
I've heard Michael Crawford sing the part and he's utter utter utter PANTS.

4.The Blues Brothers.
Yes, I do count it as a musical.It has lot's of music, ergo, it is a musical.
Lot of great tunes by a flood of famous faces performing cameos.
Highlights for me are Cab Calloway singing Minnie The Moocher, and Jake & Elwood singing Sweet Home Chicago.

5.Oliver.
One of Dickens best lovred stories put to music.
IMHO Jack Wilde who played The Artful Dodger completly stole the show away from Mark Leister who played Oliver.
I also love Ron Moody's Fagin :up: Both Fagin's songs You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two, and Reviewing The Situation are big highlights for me.


A special mention has to go to Les Misseribieleseseseses (or however the hell you spell it :oops: )
I'd actually like to see this sometime.
I've heard two songs from it (Empty Chairs At Empty Tables, and Master Of The House) and thought they were both excellent :up: . but there is such a pretentious air about that musical :?

Bacause they are wearing the T shirt, and are broadcasting the fact that they've been to see....

(God I hate that abreviation more than the name of the play) to the person they are talking too, at a volume intended to announce the glad news to anybody within a five mile radius :roll:
Doubtless we are all suposed to be highly impressed that this person was at a performance (along with countless other people).
I'm sure that every loon that has ever gone suddenly trigger happy with a shotgun was enjoying a nice meal in a resterant five minutes earlier, until they heard those words.
I remember in 1999 (which just goes to show how annoying it was) when Carol and I were having a nice romantic meal in our favourite resteraunt (No, not McDonalds) and one of these odious creatures appeared.
Although the resteraunt was virtually empty, and the person he was talking too was right next to him, the dreaded cry
I WENT TO SEE LES MIZ
sounded at full volume through the air.
This specimen then went on to ask the resteraunt owner (at this same annoying volume) what their plans for the meleanium (yes, that's how it was pronounced) were.
I confess, never in my life have I felt more like stapling someones tounge to the table :evil:

It's a shame, becuse what i've heard so far it's a great mucical, I just wish my trendyphobia would allow me to see it.

1. Dance of the vampires - saw it a few weeks ago in Hamburg - AMAZING Steinman-Music, impressing leading singers, overwhelming stage design, and a at the same time funny, tragic, frightening, romantic story...

2. Rocky Horror - just to funny, and I love the movie :lol:

3. Starlight Express - my first musical ever. Never could imagine humans acting as trains, but it is great.

4. Moulin Rouge - ok, a movie, but almost only music - and I didn't see any other musical or rather any that I would give Nr. 4.

Great songs, amazing actors, dramatic love-story...

5. Grease - the music is good, story is nice, but the only reason it is on 5 is, that I just saw 5 Musicals till now (didn't count moulin rouge) and Grease is much better than the fifth one,

(6. Miami Nights, which had good music from the 80's but the story was stolen from so many movies and musicals...nothing inventive in it)

But only because I find it impossible to say anything french sounding without trying to do a french accent. (which causes much hilarity in the bakers when i have to ask for a baguette!!!!). The problem with that is that my french accent sounds like a frenchman who was raised in Glasgow by Indian parents of Welsh extraction!!!!!

Well, it is actually based on a book by the French author Victor Hugo, it was premiered in Paris, France in 1980, and it's about things happening in France, so all in all I think a French title is deserved.
And then, Les Miserables sounds a hell of a lot better the The Miserable People or all the other things you've suggested. ;)

Les Mis is proberbly my fave....it was my first west end show and i cried all in the last part!! Amazing show!!

Rocky Horror Picture show is my alltime fave musical i've seen movie wise.

1. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA -even before I saw it (4x) in Toronto when Paul Stanley sang the lead....wow!
2. SWEENEY TODD -love it....just the right amount of quirky!
3. RENT -inexplicable...I just like it!

5. BLAST! -not sure it would 'count' as a musical per say...but its worth a go JUST for the drums alone!

It is a total and complete banquet for the senses, and I adore the music, story, costumes, sets, and just about everything else. ;) Have seen it eight times and it totally rocks!

2. Phantom of the Opera

First time I saw this musical I shook so badly at the end I could barely rise to give Michael Crawford his ovation. He was magnificent in Los Angeles and I saw him four times in the show, and have attended Phantom itself over a dozen times... including in London.

3. Les Miz

How can you not adore this show? Never tire of it.

4. My Fair Lady

Just loved it ever since I was a child.

5. The Sound of Music

Since it was not stated if this was theatre or film, have to go with Julie Andrews in the movie version of the show. It is a classic and is very special.

What is not on the list:

Dance of the Vampires. Michael Crawford was beyond terrible in it, and the show was completely destroyed catering to his comedic agenda. Saw it three times in New York, and it did not get any better with each viewing. :(

It was brilliant it would have been better if people didn't keep turning round going 'My poor dear what have you done to your face, and you've got such a beautiful face' :oops: I really enjoyed the musical!
