Car just died. Ish. Still drives, of a fashion. Feel complete helpless female as all I know is that there's a big hole in the thing the exhaust joins at the engine end (if it's the catalytic converter I don't want to know...on the other hand if it's something worse than the catalytic converter I really don't want to know!) at which something was attached that is no longer attached which I think is some sort of sensor to do with fuel (I told you I know very little about cars!), as well as a massive gaping hole in the exhaust (again at the engine end - rest of the exhaust is relatively new). Car sounds worse than a motorboat and drive home was embarrassing.
Even worse is that if I can't get it fixed by Saturday, that'll be no London trip for me :'(
And I have yet to fathom how I'm going to get to work tomorrow!
Relationships, job, house, car...please now, this is beyond a joke - really need some luck of a good kind. 2008...not my year!

Really hope you will make it to the show though.
~Helen~
27 Jul 2008, 17:59
I can change tyres and I can usually identify when things are broke (in this case because there's holes and loose bits and its noisy enough to warn the entire neighbourhood of my approach). That's all I usually need to get me by. Have been googling, but not a great deal wiser than I was already. Need to exercise patience until i can get it to my friendly mechanic tomorrow :(

helen, the exhaust is often in several sections, so if only 1 bit is gone, it should be fairly cheap and easy to get fixed, exhaust then bolts onto the manifold, which in turn bolts onto the engine, so its possibly the manifold your talking about. the sensor on the exhaust should be the lamda sensor, if its gone i would expect an engine management warning light to have come on, and possibly the car to go into limp home mode... had the car a turbo??? it would be on the exhaust manifold... it wont be a cheap fix... bm's and vw's are quite prone to blown turbos... post a pic of the damaged area
if its just blown a hole the hole can be repaired by either welding or brazing... again, not expensive.
the catalyst lives under the car usually so i reckon it aint it

Wow thanks Jonty! Errm...the section of exhaust that's got the gaping hole in it is section closest to the engine (the other two bits are new, there'd've been complaints if they'd gone too!)
Car is a Peugeot 106... I think the sensor type thing is to do with how much petrol is allowed in the exhaust but that's just a guess to be honest. It looks like a pipe type thing and WAS attached to the thing the exhaust attaches to, that could well be a manifold, but I've been googling for a picci of one and can't find anything that looks like the bit in my car!
Going to take it to the garage first thing tomorrow, but I feel a bit better after what you said now, thank you! :-)
ps - it's not a turbo, it's only 1.1 litre. although at the moment it sounds like it's been modified to considerable tune!

if the lamda sensor is missing you're gonna need one.. they're pretty cheap (need one myself for a 106) if the sensor is there, and its just a hole, you could just get it repaired (small patch welded on)
as long as the lamda is in place you wont do any damage to the car, it'll just sound really LOUD!!!! A dodgy quick temporary repair if the hole isn't too big is to fold over loads of tinfoil, wrap it around the pipe, over the hole, and secure with some hose clips

You're scarily clever. Can I hang around with you for a while in the hopes that some of your car knowledge will rub off? It interests me, just no one is ever around to explain what everything does, and in a really really scary fashion, I know more about cars than any of my friends (i.e. I'm the only one who knows how to change a tyre)
I think it's a series 2...it's a 51 plate. That exhaust bit in your link does look a lot like the part of the exhaust with the huge gaping hole in it (how that went like that without me realising is somewhat embarrassing i can tell you!), but there is also the thing that from your explanation sounds like it is definately the lambda sensor. Yes it's still there, but am not entirely sure what the thing is that it attaches to - will take it to the garage to sort that bit.
Thank you btw, I feel much better now I know what some of the bits are and I can explain a little easier to the mechanic now, rather than doing that dumb blonde thing of saying "it's making a noise"!

Now about that ABBA tribute...
I should really study what I am going to see...the clue should have been that it was in the State Theater.
The thing is...this is a full blown band with even 2 members from origininal ABBA band as guests...they are Swedish and performed in venues like RAH and Rose Ball in LA...
The are allowed knock off of original ABBA costumes and, in essense, represent ABBA as a band that is no more...and while instrumentals were pretty close to albums as we know them...vocals were better in my opinion, especially girls...The blond girl looks like a spit image of the original one...
In any event...this was a whole lot more serious affair than I expected and it was really really decent...
A little piece of trivia...somewhere in the world every 15 seconds ABBA album is sold...WOW...

Interesting Abba trivia! Who was the tribute band?
Car is back home safe with new catalyst/exhaust section according to mechanic (though I didn't pick the car up, so that's the second hand story), cost wasn't too bad - affordable at least, and car is back home and driving now without notifying the entire neighbourhood of my movements. Which is the main thing :)

Ģ*&*%Ģ conveyancing clerk at my solicitors phoned me in a panic saying the offer doc of my mortgage says we need to complete in 3 weeks which is impossible. plus that the property price is incorrect. turns out she has a different covering letter to me and it's a typo - but has me phoning bank to get them to clarify, send correct covering letter to solicitors office and also to confirm that the date in 3 weeks time is the date by which i need to return the document. which i've already done and they've received. bloody hell!

Is anyone interested in knowing that currently, in my office (which has no opening windows) the temperature is now 29C? (84F) and I have only been out to rush to another office to help someone set up a meeting. My lunch 'break' (ha) has consisted of periodically coming on here for 1-2 minutes in lull periods. Too hot. Too hungry :(
(Edit - in case you'd not guessed, I'm in a particularly intolerant mood atm! Conveyancing clerks worrying me for no reason does nothing positive for my nerves, and neither does this HEAT!)
Weīre gonna watch Mamma Mia in cinema tonight.

yes but zina...is it usually 85 degrees indoors, in a concealed room within a room, neither of which has opening windows? or do you as i suspect get air conditioning in countries with nice weather? as it's rarely warm in this country we're not allowed air con. we have some mobile aircon units but not allowed to use them in my office because there is no ventilation. i have a fan on, but all it's doing is stiring up the air which is warm. and my thermometer has just hit 30C

In the end we decided to use the air con and just stick the vents thru to another room, and one out the front door. probably not how it's sposed to be done but it reduced the temperature to 25 degrees so we were happier.
