View Full Version : Worst Song Ever...by Meat
Elijah's way
30 Aug 2005, 16:11
What, in everyone's opinion, is Meat Loaf's worst recording? My least favorite song is definetely "Dead Ringer". I just feel everything was a poor attempt by Meat,Jim, and Cher. They all could have done a hell of a lot better if they had really had their hearts into it.
P.S. This is just my personal opinion, do not take offence. Any one else feel there is a song out there that just rubs you the wrong way?
I think i'd rate Dead Ringer as one of my faves!
I'm not too keen on some of the mid 80's stuff....with all the daft dance mix lark and stuff...tbh i havn't listened to that kinda stuff enough to name anything in particular...i sorter just flicked through songs and turned it off. Not his best stuff!
I don't mind Dead Ringer every now and then, though I think it's over-played and therefore has become annoying!
Not overly keen on Man And A Woman but I can't think of any songs I'd skip if listening to an album...I'll have a ponder!

Like every artist and group there's going to be some songs that just don't work.
For instance 'you're right i was wrong' doesn't suit meat loaf at all. Maybe Michael Bolton couldve crooned it ten years ago!
A lot of Blind Before I stop and Midnight at the lost and found sounds dated now, Priscilla, wolf at your door, fallen angel, man and a woman, standing on the outside.
Compared to the amount of good songs he's had there's very few bad ones
Wolf at your door. I agree MATLAF and BBIS are the worst albums of Meat, although some songs on those albums are quite good.
My least favourites have to be Priscilla and You can never be to sure about that girl...
Hmmmmmmm :( i like most all of his songs, but it all depends on what mood im in, like if im angry , usually i want my money back, or if im exited bat out of hell. I like all music, i just gotta be in a good mood for it. Oh and i love the song martha!

Masculine is saved IMO by the excellent live version on the 'Objects' single. The album version is OK, but the live version, I think, is quality. I think it's really cool how Meat took a song that was relatively unheard of and, let's be honest, probably not universally like, and completely changed it; basically making it awesome.
"If you're looking for love... ohhhhhh you've come to the right place."
My two least favourite songs are "Priscilla" and "You Never Can Be Too Sure...". Both very eighties and just not Meat Loaf! Rest of this album is OK, with a few gems.
I didn't like Martha at first, but it grew on me. It's odd because most Meat songs are about youth etc, whereas this was completely the opposite. That was the point of the album though, was'nt it? The progression from young to old?
I like 'Because of You'. There aren't many more romantic lines than; "Life is beautiful because of you."

I think this could be true also in the case of wolf at the door, they are both musically unappealing but i like them though cos they like most ML songs they have great lyrics. I found a ML album called The Collection on a download site i wasn't crazy about the songs i hadn't heard from other albums

Man and a woman sounds like pub rock and very bad pub rock at that, but with the dance beat that was on BBIS, a lot of songs come out like that.

When I first heard 'Do It', I thought it was the worst song ever done by Meat. Everytime it came to it on the cd i would have to skip it :( Then I went and saw The 'CHSIB' tour at the SECC in Glasgow and was praying he wouldn't play it!
But, it was one of the opening songs and I thought it was cool :-) The whole opening was (anyone who saw the tour will know) ;)
I can listen to it now, but i still don't love it.
Did anyone hear 'Oh what a beautiful Morning' on i think 'I'd lie for you' single.

I'll be the first to admit I like the songs from MATLAF, there are some that I can't always hear... cause personally I don't mind if alot of Meat's 80's songs aren't as BIG as the big ones are! B-)
I don't care alot for Priscilla time to time. Man And A Woman (shivers) I don't like that... and well bottom line I have to be in a mood to hear certain Meat (80s) songs. The live covers I've heard do justice... I wish there were more.
There's always time for both BAT OUT OF HELL & CHSIB I think! :D

Burning Down sounds like a 60's protest song 20 years too late

Two songs I don't like are......
Burning down.
Man & A Woman (Christ that song bores me  ).
I'm not too keen on Night Of The Soft Parade or Special Girl either.Really have to be in the mood for those two songs :?
And yes, I do realise that all four songs are on the BBIS album
I'm not BBIS'ist, there are some great tracks on it.Fav is Standing On The Outside.Love it  .
As Space Monkey mentioned before about Masculine, it was much better live than on the album (although I don't mind the album version of that song).I think that's very true when it comes to that album in particular.
As Meat didn't have anything to do with the post production, Frank Farian just threw it together his way :? .When you hear the live versions you hear them played the way Meat would have had them on the album 8) .
well, mostly it depens on my mood haha, but a song i can't stand very good is: All revved up!
Damn what a crapy song that is.
For me it has to be Why Isn't That Enough IMO it's weak and badly constructed and it's also far too much of a rip off of 2 out of 3.
I hate his vocals on Nothing Sacred. It is really awful.

You're Right, I Was Wrong is only decent. I still like it, but the vocals are the only thing that pull me through. 45 Seconds from WTTN is crap, enough said.
Razor's Edge and most of the songs from Midnight. In fact, everything besides the title track on that album is worthless, in my opinion.
I really am not keen on Do It... it reminds me of the huggies nappy advert... do it... do it... do it in huggies!!!!

I can see where people are coming from re Razor's Edge, although I personally like it. For those who really don't like it, try and get hold a live version of the song (Milian 1983) or the exended 12" version. The live version is particularly good.

Probably a cop out, but I'd say 45 Seconds of Ecstasy - I loathe and detest that song, and have to skip it whenever it comes on
The one I like least of all is Why Isn't That Enough ... personally it comes across as a poor poor rip off of Two Out Of Three to me, dont' always skip it though as Meat is in fine voicen in that song ... likewise Martha and Meat's version of Left In The Dark, whilst I don't hate them, they'd come at the bottom of the list if I had to rate every single song Meat's recorded in order.

didnt he say once, that they put YTTWROOMM just on BOOH to make it sell better, to make it more mainstream-like? Cant remember where I read/heard that...
Dunno if he said that but would certainly make sense to do that....BOOH was very much stage music, and as Todd said on Classic Albums, you pull YTTWROOMM apart and you've got an Eagles song, which certainly would have sold better than theatre music...
Have to say, Meat not liking a song certainly wouldn't affect his performance - people who have paid to see a show (any show, not just Meat) can't be expected to be a song/scene/whatever that's dull with no passion just because the artist doesn't like it, and Meat's a great example of someone who wouldn't do that
And to get back on topic...
I reckon my "worst" song would probably be something like Never Can Be Too Sure About The Girl, definitely something form that era
RadioMaster
14 Mar 2007, 18:37
but theres surely a difference in the performance between songs he likes and dislikes. For example, I think the performance of Objects one of the most passionate, and not at least because he likes the song.
Objects is a difficult one to judge by though as we know the emotion and the history that comes with that particular track...I'd imagine that psychologically there'll be a difference but I don't think there's a difference on stage that's clear to see..
Meat 's said time and time again that his aim to to perform every concert at this peak, and he's not happy if he feels he's let people down. Some songs he may find harder to perform at that level than others, that's probably true but; Meat being the professional "heart on his sleeve" performer that he is, I really can't see him adding a song to a set list that he felt he couldn't give 100% to.
RadioMaster
14 Mar 2007, 20:30
But dont you think that he performs a song he really enjoys in a different way than a song he doesnt really care about?
Perhaps, but that's my point, I don't think Meat would perform a song he doesn't really care about.
Agreed, but its been 20 years since that interview. he may have grown to love took the words after YEARS of preforming it. ;)

11 Aug 2008, 21:17
Yeah agree - Do It - Cannot understand what the reasoning for this song could have been, the CHSIB album is great and I really like it, but Do It just seems to have been an after thought or something.
I belive Meat always has to have a "Rocker" like he said in an interview about Lemon with Bat 2. He's done that since Bat 2 with every album (WTTN's was Redlight and Bat 3's was Brake It). Do It is CHSIB's.
Based on the songs I skip when listening to an album then i'm sorry to say that Future from Bat III would be on the list :( I adore this song and Meat's voice is wonderful on it, but it's ruined as soon as the female vocals come in, completely ruined the song for me
I really like TFAWIUTB, but i love Jennifers voice, hubby is not keen on this track for the reasons you said Luce.
I was gutted when I heard it, it starts so perfectly then just goes totally downhill for me :( I honestly think the best version of TFAWIUTB is the Wuthering Heights version (someone correct me if that's not the one I'm thinking of!)

I agree, when Ms Hudson starts singing it rather sounds like she's sitting on the toilet than singing a sad ballad ...
That said I'm not a fan of the overall song either, I much prefer the Pan Box version, already because of the amazing, epic intro.
Meat's version to me sounds, like most of the Bat3/Steinman stuff, like a cheap, mainstream rip-off of the original version. :(

I agree but with this said...Jennifer Hudson does have an amazing voice which is actually not even recognizable in this duet...I don't know what went wrong there...to me it seems like production or something...

What puts the icing on the cake is they omit stuff from the originals (Like in IACBTMN a couple verses are cut) and I never heard PB's version of Future but I bet its longer.....

I think part of the problem is that The Future and IACBTMN are better as solo songs and not duets. WAL was written to be a duet and it works well. Plus Patti and Meat not only have chemistry on stage but their vocals have a good chemistry. Their voices blend together into one powerful voice. Marion's and Jennifer's voices didn't blend well with Meat's, imo.

I might be out of my mind...which possibly is the case...but I somehow remember that Future was sung by Dream Engine as a group too...if somebody can correct me on this - please do...I am growing senile...I actually don't know if I've heard it as solo...
I think The Future actually is a group song but I don't like the duet it was made into...if you know what I mean...there are duets and then there are duets...
I know I will be quartered for this...but the more I've listened to WAL, the less I liked it...now if I listen to that album I just skip it completely...with this said...I do think that Patti's voice is very suitable for duets with Meat...

I've never heard The Future sung by the Dream Engine, but I think it would sound better as a group song than a duet. The solo versions I've heard are by Patti and also the Wuthering Heights version. Both were very good. I like the song WAL but I think it would have been an even better song performed live. Like I thought CHSIB was even greater performed live.

=O Never thought about my least favorite ML songs, there's just so many mind-blowingly amazing ones that mean so much to me that I've never really considered to be any I don't like. If I have to -
Nowhere Fast
Surfs Up
Left in the Dark
The Future Just Ain't What It Used To Be
Burning Down
Man and a Woman
Special Girl
All of MATLAF with the exception of Razor's Edge and If You Really Want To
Martha
Fiesta de la whatever it is from WTTN
45 seconds of Ecstasy
Tear Me Down
I feel I need to explain myself, considering how big my list is =( The four Steinman songs at the top are there (particularly Nowhere Fast) because IMO, they were butchered. Completely and utterly murdered to fit into an album with far inferior songs. Nowhere Fast, one of my favorite Steinsongs, is simply horrible (Meat's version). It just feels like it got thrown into a machine, mangled beyond recognition, then spat back out to have Meat's heavenly voice plastered on top =( Surfs Up is in a similar boat, Left in the Dark was pretty good but was still a disappointment to me, and I just plain didn't like Meat's version of the Future. MATLAF goes without saying and the few from BBIS and WTTN I just didn't click with.
I don't mean to offend anyone with these views, it's just my opinion...this thread really is pretty negative when you get down to it =(

I'd Do Anything For Love
I love AFL, but when it's performed live, I never enjoy the slow part at the beginning of the song. I think Patti should come onstage and sing the slow lines at the beginning of the song. Then she disappears and the fast music starts. Meat sings the song and Patti reappears to sing her lines at the end.

kind of hard to say, but these are songs on each record that i will skip over if i'm listening to the album or a compilation:
Bat Out of Hell: Enjoy all the songs.....
Dead Ringer: Enjoy all the songs.....haven't listened to this record in a while, and after taking a quick glance at the track list, i may just have to blow off the dust......
Midnight At The Lost & Found: Priscilla.....another record i'm going to have to blow the dust off of:-P
Bad Attitude: Basically one of those records where it's easy to name a few favorites, but i can listen to it in its entire.....a couple songs are close to automatic skip status, but they survive
Blind Before I Stop: this is the only record where i can say there was some really crappy stuff: Special Girl, Man & a Woman, Standing on the Outside, and Burning Down
Bat 2: enjoy all the songs.....Good Girls Go to Heaven almost gets the cut, but survives.....barely
Welcome to the Neighborhood: Enjoy all the songs.....a couple barely survive on my playlist, but i keep them around:D
Couldn't Have Said It Better: Man of Steel, Because of You, Do It, Forever Young, You're Right I Was Wrong
Bat 3: If God Could Talk
Hang Cool Teddy Bear: Love is not Real, Did You Ever Love Somebody, Let's Be in Love
so, my list of Meat Loaf songs that suck:
1) Priscilla
2) Special Girl
3) Man and a Woman
4) Burning Down
5) Standing on the Outside
6) Man of Steel
7) Because of You
8) Do It
9) Forever Young
10) You're Right I was Wrong
11) If God Could Talk
12) Did You Ever Love Somebody
13) Let's Be In Love
14) Love is not Real
those are in no specific order, they all suck (although i am still trying to like Love is not Real, but it's hard.....i like the concept, but the lyrics just seem to be childish)

Almost all JS songs on Bat 3 are forgettable versions imo, Do it, You're Right I was wrong, Because of You, Why isn't that Enough, Cry Over Me, If God Could Talk. Almost everything form HCTB especially where Love is not real ends up...mental why write/record that nonsense?, disappointing chorus in Peace on Earth, California..Yuk, Did you Ever love somebody...boring.
Pretty much prefer ALL the low key attempts of his 80s stuff in place of that horrible :shit: I think this is the problem working with too many song writers. Grabbing ideas from everywhere doesn't work. I would like to have had a fully written Jacbos / Durkee album and a Nikki Sixx/James Michael one. They could have convinced them with spending bucks on that instead of getting random guests to appear on an album for absolutely no benefit to the music whatsoever (Bat 3 /HCTB).

Dead Ringer is one of my favorites (especially version with Patti) ... Anyway what I was going to write? ... Oh yes - the worst song ever done by Meat is ... "One More Kiss (Night Of The Soft Parade)".
There are songs sung by Meat that I like less, but don't hate any. I guess I like the least is "burning down". That is a song that I listen to less often, but at some point I always go back and have a listen to the older albums.
I think my favorite older album is "Blind before I stop" b/c the music is great and that is a very good album picture.

God i love piece of the action!!!!!!!!!
But i am old!!!
Take care all.:D
Martha. There is no argument on this one
Totally agree !
Lets Be In Love i thought am i ever gonna like this song, then today i played it and all of a sudden i thought this is great, Meat and Patti, and i felt the emotion that i had thought was not in the song ! So Lets Be In Love i am loving !

I'm waiting for that moment to happen with me, again, for this song. I have a feeling it's going to slap me upside the head when I'm not paying attention .
That is what happened to me yesterday when I listened to "cry over me". It just gave me chills. It is really an amazing song. A " man and a woman", is so sweet and sentimental. I cry when I hear " where angles sing".

Me too. I think it depends on the mood you're in. I played LBIL last night and I rather enjoyed it. I wish they had done something different with the ending, but 3/4 of the song is really good and there's so much emotion in the vocals. I bet if the song was performed live, it would really be emotional and powerful.

Why is it in a different order to the list you posted above? Also you've spelled Numer 6 wrong!
you hate all the chick songs. None of those where bad,I could not believe you put "It's is all coming back to me now" in that list. Also, Cry over me is just amazing. BTW,I had never heard your * 1 bad song, but I think I will check it out now.

I have The Masters album, and I honestly think that half of the album is total tosh with 80s dance beats over the tracks

My views of changed recently, thanks to WarioLoaf - his live recordings of Left in the Dark and Nowhere Fast on YouTube, more precisely. Meat's version of Left in the Dark (studio) does nothing for me, but live it is just AMAZING. Nowhere Fast, still not the greatest, but live is far better than the recording off of Bad Attitude.
Going to add Paradise and Anything For Love to my list of unloved, actually. They annoy me. Not so much live, but the studio recordings really irritate me. The MSO recordings are actually the only versions of these two that I actually like.
The best versions I have ever heard of " Nowhere Fast" is off of a CD that also has " Tonight is what if means to be young" ( Jim steinman)is off a Cd that is a compilation of songs. I have it somewhere, can't recall the name of it. Streets of Fire. That is it.

I think the Bat Trilogy was great, and loved every song on the albums.
WWTN was great also, fitted fairly well, good songs,
His 80's albums fit in here nicely, few songs not sure of but genuinely good
CHSIB was average saved only by Patti and CHSIB single, rest could be wiped!
Now dont shoot me but....
HCT in its entirety can be discarded. The songs are poor, lyrics bland and the music is not that great!
I love Meat, ive listened to his music since i was 7 years old and went to my first gig at the SECC. I love listening the the Bat Trilogy etc as I get lost in another world, caught up in the lyrics and music, and can sit for hours totally zoned on the music and passion of the songs.
But unfortunately for me, and its just my opinion but HCT is totally wrong for Meat and it pains me to say it.
