On Blu-ray:

2012 - meh
John Carpenter's "The Thing" (uncut) (excuse the pun) - great

I liked 2012, different for Cusack but still good, I saw most of the day after tomorrow subsequently so I can see that they are very similar.

As for the Thing that is a brilliant film.

Especially the cage scene underwater was great!

omg... lol ... it would take the hands of the population of China to count on fingers the times i've seen Jaws ?... and that scene STILL makes me jump !! ... do you know what i mean ? ... the music plays... and you KNOW he's coming right ? ... and he swims past... and the music stops... and then .. dead silent ...hehehe... and i sit there doing mantra... "i'm NOT going to jump .. i'm NOT going to jump ... i'm N... OH... THE SUCKER MADE ME JUMP AGAIN"... lol ... because he comes back ... BOO !!!! ... and pounds into the cage ... sans music... GREAT scene !!!

meanwhile... lol ... last night... don't faint... but i watched a film i had never before ! ... The Last Temptation of Christ ... starring Willem Dafoe as Jesus ... directed by Martin Scorcese ... it was very graphic ... i read the book years ago ... i remember that the last temptation was as he hanged on cross he had vision of making love to Mary Magdelene... but i thought the book also produced a fictional theory how Jesus and either Thomas or Peter created the illusions of the miracles and such ... but it's possible i could be confusing TLTOC with some other book i read ... at anyrate... i enjoyed the film ...

nooo... my fave line from Predator is Ahnold coming up face to face with the creature after its mask is removed... "you're one ugly mutha effer" (cleaned up for internet posting) ... Ahnold's accent makes that a classic line for me ... lol ...

and last movie i saw was W ... starring Josh Brolin as George Dubya and Richard Dreyfuss too scary as Dick Chaney... i'd watch again

ta ! ... i was going to ask ... i like Robert Downey Jr ... and the ads and previews made it look like a fun film and i came across it one evening on the tube ... i stayed for about 3 minutes and thought "omg... it seems it would bore me to tears !!" ... so i doubt i'll go out my way to watch ...

Sue K
18 Apr 2010, 13:07
... lol ... okay... i watch Four Christmases ... starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon ... i came in on it a few minutes late ... i will watch it again ... it was overTheTop headshakingly weird at times but at other times... bellyache laughingly funny ... but what a misMatch in the two physically ... she so tiny ... he so huge ! ... the bathroom sex scene ... egads... it made VV's character appear to be a pediophile ... ...

then on to a film i totally enjoyed ... The Gift ... starring Cate Blanchette (sp) ... a very very fave ... (so i should learn to properly spell her name... right ... lol ... ) ... a who-done-it supernatural thriller ... CB is a seer ... she reads cards for people for her living ... she's widowed... and mother to three loverly little boys ... Keanu Reeves portrays just pure evil as the abusive husband of one of CB's clients... interestingly enough played by Hillary Sw*ank (name edited with * ... rolling ... well... you can see why... it took me a mo' or two too... lol ) ... and Katie Holmes was in it playing a floozey fiance of a school principal played by Greg Kinnear (the guy started on Soup Talk on E ?... and who then would have guessed what a good actor he is ?) ... anyroad... good interesting to watch cast... good whoDoneIt thriller with a bit of the unexplained thrown in for excellent measure... and ... i cried at the end ... lol ... i just had a feeling that's what had happened ... oh ... i guessed the murderer ... but still enjoyed the film ...

then From Hell starring the deppie one came on ... a VERRRRY fave actor in what may be the film that blipped JD onto my "omg who's thaaaat?" radar ... lol ... i love films and stories about seriel killers and this film is based on the story of Jack the Ripper ... and JD does indeed look "hotcha" ... and the ending is a shock ... interesting ... imo... seldom happens ...

and i finished with Crooked Hearts... i THINK it's called... lol ... but i DEFINATELY know it features a very young Vincent "be still my omg i ache for him heart" D'Onofrio ... my latest fantasy man ... it's a film about a disfunctional family ... Peter Coyote features as the father ... and Juliette Lewis (a bizarre little actress no ? ... but so interesting to watch) ... as one of VD's sibs ... and another ... imo ... bizarre little actress... and gawd if i can think her name right now ... oh pooh... you know her... she was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High... the character who got pregnant ... and nutz... anyroad... imo ... she always takes on odd roles... same as Juliette Lewis... they seem to do alot of work in independent films rather than blockbusters... y'know ? ..

so ... that's how i enjoyed my Saturday evening... complete with micro-waved popcorn ! ... lol ...

The Omen (1976)

was not too thrilled, maybe because I had seen the remake first, which is basically reshot scene by scene

(had the same problem with Halloween)

yeah... you probably had to see it when it first came out ... on a big screen ... in a darkened theater... it's creepiness was intensified that way ... i'd read the book ... i started to watch the remake ... i wasn't happy with the guy playing the Gregory Peck role... i can't think his name right now... but i think he was in the first Scream ...

last film for me was a re-watch of Full Metal Jacket... Vincent D'Onofrio is incredible in it you ask me... but don't... i'm biased ... ;) ... yum ...

Saw Iron Man 2 on Saturday, nowhere near as good as the original and as much as Ms Paltrow was good in the first one, they really wasted her in this one.

The thing is, horror movies (especially slashers) are supposed to be about a) scares and b) fun. Most modern horror qualifies more as torture porn than a fun movie. Especially NOES used to be one of those you just enjoyed as they were fun. In this one, Freddy Krueger actually is depicted as a child molester. This is neither fun nor scary...it just leaves you with a sick feeling...

Wes Craven always said that Freddy was a child killer, not a molester. Actually makes a big difference as you have so many reports of molested children in the news, as I said it takes the fun/scare out of the whole thing.

Btw it's all about how it's depicted. In the original movie he may have been molesting the kids, but it was never a subject in the movie. In the new one this plays a big part. In one scene he's having the girl he used to molest pinned to a bed in a little girls dress and "plays" with her... would never have been possible in the original.

 That's a pretty big line to cross, and changes the nuture of the character considerablly and the likeabillity of the character.
The likeabillity of the character.
That's a bit of a joke as he's a child killer, but he's still a popular movie monster.
Weird huh

Whereas I can't see the same character having the same popularity if he's a molestor as well as a killer.

Think there's a line of decency there (and again, it's really weird when you consider that child killers are on the plus side of that line) that the average person really doesn't want crossed in their fiction.

I haven't seen the film yet (and this is a good reason not to) but I can't see any artistic merit in the change in nature of the character.

Did Wes Craven have any input/contol over this movie?

The Fly ... starring Jeff Goldblum ... another remake... another change of character imo ... in the original imo ... the character was to be pitied a bit ... but in the remake the character seems evil ... it probably is more like a fly than human ... a fly caring only about its own survival rather than caring to anyone around it ...

While I'm not a fan of Zombie's the-gorier-the-better approach at halloween, and the fact that he tries to give Mike Myers a backstory, you gotta appreciate that he tries to make the movie his own. Too many of the recent horror remakes have been 1:1 copies of the originals with updated effects and less appeal. The Zombie Halloween isnt my taste, but I appreciate the effort.

and semi-on topic

Just rewatched the original Nightmare on Elm Street.

awww RIIIGHT !! ... we (as in my husband and i and not in speaking as the Queen... hehe) finally watched not one but TWO films actually made within the past year and half... YAY FOR US ... okay ... last night ... A Special Relationship ... that being between the loverly and very much missed former PM Tony Blair ... and "i know he's a bastid but i can't help it ... he's so likable ... i like him !" ... former President Bill Clinton ... Tony B was once again played by Michael Sheen (he was loverlying in The Queen) ... and Dennis Quaid (such an interesting choice !) portrayed Bill Clinton... very well ... husband and i both enjoyed it immensely ... even if you've only had a fingertip on the pulse of that time period you sit and wait for the events to happen and look forward to hearing discussions behind closed doors ... ie... Monica L ... omgoodness ... anyroad... it was a story of friendship... in particular how Mr Blair stood by Mr Clinton even through the Monica L issue ... not just stood by him but pulled his arse out the fire !! ... i think too it was a bit of a telling of the love stories of the two world wide power couples... the Blairs... and Billary ... the actresses portraying Mrs Blair and Hillary (i'm sorry but i need to check their names) ... were just out of this world as well !!!

then this morning... Public Enemy... Johnny Depp as John Dillinger... after the initial excitement of my "omgawd it's the deppie one!!"... i got lost in the character because ... as always... JD just vanishes and is who he is portraying... okay ... a couple times i saw George from Blow and Sweeney Todd peek out... hehehe... but otherwise... two thumbs up to JD... it got a bit slow in the middle... but picked up to the sky with the chase ... FBI after Dillinger... he evaded them so many times... it was heart gripping ... a bit of a love story there as well ... you know... a love interest for Dillinger... all in all... we enjoyed that as well... and it's taped... (half price on On Demand... fine job !!!) so i can watch it as many times as i like !!!...

whew... and ta.. if you've gotten this far... lol ... i'm just excited i had more to say than... hehe... "From Hell... again" ... ...

District 9, very good, although the camera angles and moving about a lot did piss me off a bit. Liked the new take on an Alien film, with a very interesting storyline.

thanks for the recommendation Michelle... i saw the film advertised on On Demand yesterday and will check it out ... have loved a good "monster" movie since a kid... in fact... hehe... i've loved bad ones as well ... hehe... thanks again ! ... oh... the last film for us was the remake of The Stepfather ... did i say that yet ? ... hehe ... okay welp ... off to deliver the newspapers i am ...

... as i said in yesterday's post ... the last film viewed was a remake of The Stepfather ... what i found interesting about it this time around is the use of modern technology ... i don't know the year the original was filmed but it was prior to the computer/ cellphone age i'm sure ... that's what struck me ... i enjoyed it for what it was ... the eldest son was likeable finally ... i don't think the stepfather in this one was near as creepy as in the original... the actor Terry ... last name along the lines of Quinn something ? ... the actor on Lost he is ...was way creepier ... when i'd hear him whistling Camptown Ladies ... i'd get goosebumps... in a bad way ... lol ...

Charlie Wilson's War

very clever. Didnt think it was possible to make a comedy about the political background of the russian-afghanistan war of the 80s, that's touching, intelligent and funny.

Citizen Jane

didnt expect a lot from this one. I was pleasantly surprised. Once again the Loaf played a part that couldve drifted off into a cliché quickly, yet he handled it very good. The second half of the movie was kind of a let down though, too predictable IMO.

Robin Hood,

it was good, ignore Crowe's accent, since everyone did when he was in Gladiator, it's a good film without being fantastic.

Good chemistry between Ms Blanchett and Mr Crowe.

Just because it's a love story doesn't mean it can't have a decapitation or two (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111686/quotes) :p
