Miracle Run. The film is based on the true story of a mother and her twin autistic sons, from the boys' ages of about six to fifteen years old. I laughed a bit and cried alot and sometimes did both at the same time ! ... lol ... The strengths and convictions of the mom and sons were just incredible. I enjoyed the film immensely.

Do you find yourself doing the same as I when watching old movies ~ "Now, if he had access to a cell phone and internet, this film would be over in a flash." ? ~ lol ...

We watched a fun film about women's roller derby called Whip It. It's Drew Barrymore's debut as a film director. We're fans of Drew and Juliette Lewis was in it as well and Ellen Page. It was a fun film. We laughed and cried a bit at the sentimental parts. We liked it much !

It is very dated, but still quite good fun.

Last film I saw was Knight and Day - thought it was quite entertaining, mainly due to Tom and Cam. Nothing new about it, but passed the time enjoyably enough.

Donny Brasco starring the deppie one ... The film's about an FBI agent who went undercover to infiltrate the Mafia/ mob and is based on a true story. I've watched the film many times and when it gets to this one scene, I STILL ask myself how the guy could ever have brought himself to do what he had to so the mob guys wouldn't catch on. Thanks to AndrewG for making me aware of it. Not very scary but interesting 1970s horror flick. Must be a great role for an actor: Lying in bed motionless without ever saying a word and having the same facial expression throughout the whole movie. (I saw him blink once. :p)

Piranha (1978.)

As far as I remember you hardly see any piranhas in that movie, right? At least not in a way that they'd scare you. The movie is unintentionally funny at times. For example, when the piranhas attack and the people are actually quite close to the bank but instead of leaving the water they all just scream like hell and get even more into the reach of the nasty fish. I love horror movies. :lawl:

Being from Northern Germany, I never thought I'd say this but I have to praise Bavarian television. Two days ago they had a great evening program:

1) Help! - Silly but funny Beatles flick. The TV guide had announced a "new dubbing" :yikes: but it turned out that it was the original, English version with German subtitles. :D
2) Stones in Exile
3) Gimme Shelter
4) Blow-Up

So I got to see two good movies and two interesting documentaries. Beatles, Stones and Michelangelo Antonioni. German TV hasn't gone to the dogs yet.

lol the ending was the only thing I disliked. They went for the realistic approach, no cgi or anything and had a tiger that was supposed to behave like a real tiger and then they go for such a schmaltzy hollywood ending.

The Hole in 3D. Meh, ok but it never gets REALLY scary which it could have been. More of a family scary movie. A bit too repetitive in places. I'd wait for DVD or TV for that one. End sequence not too bad though.

This evening I saw The Town, which is a great cops and robbers film, probably the best one since Heat. Well done Mr. Ben Afflleck! Highly recommended.

I can understand that in a sense, but somehow I've never been that bothered about movies set in the middle ages. Think I saw the Kevin Costner one once. Just find it a dull era of history and very difficult personally to connect to drama wise.

Thanks for the reviews on Robin Hood. I saw the ads on tv and thought it looked good. I'm very fond of the acting of Cate B.

I started to watch Angels & Demons last night before being off to bed. I don't know. Tom Hanks just seemed so, so, wooden and OLD ... lol ... I think I won't go back to it and just remember the story from the book... lol ... In the book, though Langdon has no OTT personality, he does seem to have a personality and seems he can be a bit in awe and interested in things around him. Tom H just seems to be plowing through with his delivery like he's late getting to lunch. Anybody see it ? Did you like it ? Ta in advance !

Buried
Very morbid and disturbing. Do not see if you are freaked out by the thought of people being buried alive. Extremely well put together though and awesome cinematography all seeming to have been set in such a confined space.

Back to the Future
Absolutely mesmerising to see this in digital projection. It makes a HUGE difference for quality I have to say. I thoroughly enjoyed watching what is probably my favourite film ever, once again but this time on a big screen which has been the only one out of the trilogy I never saw in the cinema before. Some coincidences really stood out to me during this viewing:
-When Marty skateboards over to Twin Pine Mall you faintly hear a train in the background, this coincidentally echoes the train line you see in BTTF3 but who said Hill Valley actually had a train station before they conceived of that idea? Very interesting imo.
-Doc Brown coincidentally tells Marty when he has revealed the time machine that he plans to go 25 years into the future: 2010. :))

A beautiful cinema experience. A movie that I would definitely class as "perfect".

Witness to Murder

Good old 1950s Hollywood thriller starring Barbara Stanwyck. The movie was obviously altered / censored for the German viewers. According to IMDB, the villain has a German name, while in the German version he appears to be Hungarian. Maybe it was due to him yelling that he was going to be more successful than those guys from Austria, Italy and Georgia (don't know if their actual names are mentioned in the original movie) in creating a new world order in one scene. Very odd, over the top scene, it didn't seem to fit into to the story very well. He was more believable and scary as an "ordinary" villain than as a crazy wannabe Mussolini. Good movie anyway, in spite of a few implausible scenes.

I woke in the middle of the night, channel surfed and found a movie title that sounded very familiar to me - The Narrows. It's a film featuring "be still my heart" Vincent D'Onofrio of Law&Order:Criminal Intent fame and I watched the whole thing ! I enjoyed it okay. It's about the mob in NYC, a bit, more of a kid and his dad's relation with and in it and life in general. Vincent was cast as the dad. It was from 2008 and it was just, for me, the most surreal feeling to see "Det Bobby Goren" being a dad to a grown kid and cursing and being rash ... lol ... I've seen films from when Vincent was younger, but to see him, you know ... oh never mind... lol ...

It was no The Godfather, but if you like mob movies or Vincent, it's not time wasted, imo.

Thanks for your review, Michelle. I only go to a movie house to see Johnny Depp films due to funding AND On Demand on tv system AND patience... lol ... Ryan Reynolds is a favorite actor of mine, too and when I heard on radio review the concept of the film, my first thought was, "Well, at least Ryan Reynolds is in it as a saving grace", but he managed not to save it, hunh ? I don't want to know how it ends, but the other thought was "and if he doesn't die, it's crap" ... lol ... Call me, WHATEVER, but I'm tired of all these last second impossible recues in films. Yea even Ryan Reynolds couldn't save the film, the ending i won't give away but i didn't like it, just not my type of ending.

I was hoping for a last minute rescue, it arrived in the form of the end credits. If i had watched it on the telly, i would have turned it off, but seens how it costs you a small fortune to go to the pictures, we were determined to see it through. I kinda wish we hadn't ;) LOL..
I won't be back at the pictures for awhile, cos we will have a puppy to look after, i had wished we went and saw The Town instead, i heard that its canny good !
Still you live and learn, i should have looked in more detail into the premise of the film, rather than just going on the adverts, which as always show the 20 seconds of a movie that makes it look good.

But to be fair 24K it did get a few good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. 74% approval rating the last time I checked. I can see why people really hated it. Nearly all films end with a happy ending these days, this was different, and I liked it.

No way can you compare this film to Hitchock's work either. It's very different and much more disturbing than anything he did.

As I said this film is simply not for everyone. In fact I would say the vast majority of movie goers probably won't like it. I'm really surprised it ramped up to number 3 in the UK box office.

A movie you shouldn't miss which is great as I've said is "The Town", and Johnny Depp is not in that one either. If he was it would have sucked probably as it would all be about him instead of a clever story and extremely good directing.

Probably Michael Moore's best. Surprisingly good really. Almost a sequel to his Roger & Me in many ways. Enjoyed watching it (though that sounds rather strange considering the subject matter and some of the depressing things you see). It does have a kind of a happy end focusing on the Obama presidential win, though I get the impression that actually has made very little difference to communities throughout the USA so far or the country's foreign policies. There is a whole new movie Moore could make about that but doubt he will.
If you enjoyed his previous documentaries such as Fahrenheit 9/11 you will probably like this one too. Well put together and keeps you entertained or engrossed I should say.

V for Vendetta this morning, now moved on to one of my favourite films - Million Dollar Baby - get the tissues ready!

 Casino.
One of those films i've never got round to watching before, but it was well worth the wait.
A lot of the same cast as Goodfellas, Joe Pesci was his brilliant self, as was Robert De Niro.
I especially like the way Casino (and Goodfellas) are narated by the characters as the film progresses.

After that it was Sharpe's Justice and Sharpe's Waterloo.

Just watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That Harley-Davidson that Shia LaBeouf rides is NOT a 1950s bike. The engine looks like the Twin Cam model which was introduced in the late 1990s and the frame is apparently Softail. :wtf:

Action movie guys usually suck in comedy movies, but Oscar is a pretty funny movie about a gangster trying to live up to his promise to his dying father to go straight.

No, I agree. First 2 are awesome, Goldfinger is very good, Thunderball is boring, You Only Live Twice is kinda fun but Connery phones it in. Diamonds Are Forever is the worst film of them all. So cheap and connery looks so uncomfortable with the humour, and very old in places too.

I've also noticed that the proportion of time Connery is on screen throughout the whole film seems less than that of his successors, if that makes sense.

I do agree that From Russia With Love is a brilliant film.

The only James Bond film I've ever seen is Goldfinger and that was at the theater when it first came out and probably only because I filled with the madness of everything British thanks to the four loverly lads from Liverpool ... lol ... I'm not fond of spy films, though I was quite fond of the tv show The Man From U.N.C.L.E., I know ... lol ... a silly bit of fluff in retrospect. Maybe it's because spy films make me think too much and I get a bit lost following who's who and doing what to whom ... lol ...

Anyroad, I saw a half minute of Avatar this morning. I quick turned it off thinking I may want to see it from beginning to end. Now, do I want to do that ? Anyone ? I don't think my family will like it. The half minute I saw was a bit... lol ... WORDY.. for a couple people who watch all Die Hards, Lethal Weapons and that one with Charles Bronson there was a series of that I can't think the title of right now. So... lol ... I'm no brainiac, but will I enjoy it, ya think ?

Speaking of time on screen, I read or heard somewhere that, oh awful, I can't think this morning, the actor who played Hannibal the Cannibal, he was only on screen for either 11 or 14 minutes during Silence of the Lambs ... HOPKINS... lol ... ANTHONY... there we go. I think I'll check that out. Doesn't it seem he was present forever ? I guess it was just the overwhelming creepiness of his persona that never left, plus the character became so famous particularly in that creepy mask... lol ... similar to Jason in his hockey mask ... lol ...

Most of them don't have a difficult plot to follow! Make the effort to watch From Russia With Love as that is really good. Also Dr No, Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, For Your Eyes Only, Licensed To Kill, Golden Eye and Tomorrow Never Dies. A lot of the Bond films have aged badly though, and some weren't too hot to begin with.

The special effects range from excellent to very good throughout, although I'm not sure how the cinema experience will translate to home viewing. Take those effects out of the equation though and you're not left with much. The storyline is pretty basic and Sam Worthington isn't the best actor in the world.

Thanks for your feedback. Sometimes on the On Demand application of our cable system Bond films are available sans ads for a month. Perhaps next time I'll pick out a few you suggested and give them a go. As for Avatar, I think I'll view that sans family. I'm not big on special effects and I seldom go to the theater so I think I'll be okay with tv viewing. Thanks again !

Is he the person who directed Once Upon A Time In Mexico ? I think that film's great and not just for the fact the deppie one is in it. The violence is so over the top crazy to the point you laugh out loud. The gun battle scene in, I don't know if it's the President of Mexico's home or a State building, was just out of this world ! Sliding down bannisters and shooting bad guys so they fly backward through air on impact ! Too wild ! And of course, JD's character's showdown with the two bad guys ! Laughed like hell !

I'll take your word for it ... ;) ... I watched a film years back called Freaks. It's an old black and white film. I think it was made back in the 30s. Howard Stern, the radio talk jock here in the States, was always talking about it. I saw it was going to be on tv and gave it a view and YIKES... lol ... Creeped me out for days... maybe even to THIS day... lol ... I know I'll never watch it again. Once in the blue I'll see it listed on the tv guide and my stomach kicks in... ... lol ...

As Evil One says, I wouldn't worry about being confused by most James Bond films. Just sit back and enjoy.

I recommend the following:
Sean Connery: dr no, from russia with love.
George Lazenby: ohmss.
Roger Moore: live and let die, the spy who loved me, for your eyes only, octopussy.
Timothy Dalton: living daylights.
Pierce Brosnan: tomorrow never dies, the world is not enough.
Daniel Craig: casino royale.

Quite a long list I know but for me these are the best of the bunch. Most of the others are very good too although to varying degrees. The ones I think are the worst for each actor are

sean: Diamonds Are Forever (cringeworthy)
Roger: View To A Kill (Rog is OLD, budget is nil, inspiration is gone)
Pierce: Die Another Day (omg. Pierce is awesome. Script seems to have been written by 2 teams of people that never met or combined their stories until the last minute. An excellent base story ruined by too many in jokes, Halle Berry, and absolutely appalling cgi tidal wave surfing. No really.)

In terms of Avatar, I watched it at home on 2d blu ray. To be honest I can't really see what the fuss was all about. Don't get me wrong, it is very well crafted, but the story is thin and unoriginal, the effects vary between admittedly stunning to computer gamey, and it all gets a bit soppy before proper war starts. Like they had a ticklist to try to appeal to the broadest consumer base... Soppy disney romance bit for the girls - tick! Guns, explosions, and big things being blown up for the boys - tick! Passable entertainment but nothing more.

I imagine however that this could be the film that imax and 3d were made for due to the amount of layered detail in various scenes.

Lordie ! Thanks much for taking time out to elaborate on the viewing of Bonds and Avatar. I will be giving the Bonds a try and I think my husband will like those. There is one he watches every time it is on, the one with alligators and Bond and a woman hung over them and it seems an impossible escape ? THAT one... lol ...

Avatar I may be watching on my own. My husband surfed onto it the other night and stayed a few minutes and is iffy on it. Maybe if we do it bit by bit, like reading a book or watching a mini-series on tv.

Thanks again !

The Ruins

very nasty little independent horror movie... but well worth watching! Leaves you very uneasy though, last time I was that sickened by a movie was Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. - While you'd expect tons of blood and gore from a movie called "TCM", you wouldnt necessarily with a movie called "The Ruins".

Story goes like your typical teenage horror flick: Four american kids to to mexico to check out ancient ruins... but are never come back.

This one is indeed very gory. And I dont mean the type of holy-crap-it's-so-over-the-top,-it's-funny gore, but the type of holy-crap-I-can-actually-believe-that-woman-just-cut-open-her-whole-body gore...

In a strange way I enjoyed it, but I dont have the desire to see it again...

btw Neil, I actually rewatched the Dawn of the Dead remake the other night. Picked it up for 9,99. It's actually a lot more entertaining than I remembered. Only thing that was a bit hard to take was the woman on the bus "accidently" being chainsawed to death (lol... I guess).

Quantum of Solace on blu ray. Much better than I remembered it being. Yes it needs an occasional pause for breath, a touch more humour, and a little less shaky cam, but other than that I that it was an excellent combination of old and new bond, with terrific performances from craig and dench especially.
