View Full Version : what was the last movie you saw?
31 (2006)
A few things I learned.
Rob Zombie has not evolved as a director. He isn't able to do anything else but the same thing. I am not familiar with his music but as a director he is terrible.
Create a scary enviroment for a terrifying cat and mouse game, then have a terrible director film it and you get the most boring gore movie of all time.
Zombie manages to create a movie with not a single interesting character. You don't care if the next person you see is a victim or a killer, if they get killed or escape, if the killing is bloody gore scene or happens off screen. This movie is so terribly directed you don't care at all.
In the end this was a complete waste of 100 minutes.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Very well made movie.
7,5/10
Blair Witch (2016)
Bleh. Never liked the original movie from 1999. Terrible movie that got it's hype from the (very clever) marketing.
This is basically the same crap. Never scary, never intense, never interesting. The cast is so bad you forget about them the minute they are out of frame. I am pretty sure this franchise is dead (either way, it is for me).

Didn't really feel like watching the movie but, well I am married. It doesn't matter what I feel like
I have to admit that I enjoyed the movie. Hanks is performing as well as we know he can.

I'm tossing up whether to watch this... I feel my knowledge of Airbus will get in the way. It's a good story but it's no where near as impressive as the RAF Nimrod ditching.

Singing In The Rain
Absolutely superb film. Full of energy, full of humour, an interesting story about when talkies came in, superbly played by the 3 main leads. I was surprised how much I liked it.
No reason not to give it a very positive 5/5

Fun fact: Production took longer because the producers wanted Debbie Reynolds. Unfortunately she couldn't dance. So Gene Kelly had to teach her.
Sherlock Holmes ; The lying detective (2016)
I know, I'm behind but my wife demands to watch those with me and, well she prefers soap series over Sherlock :roll:
Anyway, it's almost as if they are trying to hard with this season. Some of the stuff seem very far fetched and it all feels a bit forced. Don't know but for me the least favorite season. This episode, slightly better than the Tatcher one. I hope the ending is good. This show deserves a great ending...

Sherlock - The Final problem
Best of the set. Good ending of the series (assuming Benedict will be too busy to do more Sherlock episodes)

Don't know why Tom Cruise bothers making action movies beyond the Mission Impossible series. He's been great in the last several MI movies. They're great fun, just like James Bond mostly.
Arrival (2016)
Good movie but not the movie I hoped for. So I think my rating isn't as objective as I want it to be. Too much drama for me when I didn't feel like watching a drama.
7/10
Max Steel (2016)
Utter crap
3/10
The Mechanic 2 (2016)
I used to like Jason Statham movies but this, as most of his recent movies, was just meh.
5/10
The Hobbit trilogy
I did start the first one just after it came out and coudn't bare to sit through it. Thanks to the fast forward option I have now seen all three of them. Peter Jackson managed to make this even more boring than the last two LotR movies. And the sfx, especially the blue screen ones, are as terrible as the LotR ones (which had actually a lot of very poor blue screen effects).
After two towers, return of the King, Kong and this poor trilogy, Peter Jackson is no longer a director of interest to me. (I bet that keeps him awake at night  )
Anyway the entire Hobbit stuff 2,5/10
Batman (1989)
Just like Richard Donner's Superman from 1978, I don't think anyone wil ever come close to Tim Burton's Batman movie(s). Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton were perfectly cast as well. So was Danny DeVito for the sequel.
I think that only Heath Ledger deserves to be in that list (although I prefer Jack's Joker).
Anyway 8,5/10

I just found out that she was only 19 years old at the time. One of my very favorite movies. :D
It sounds similar to Dirty Dancing; I read that they went with Jennifer Grey as opposed to a professional dancer, because they thought her inexperience would be more believable (I think they were right). So, Patrick Swayze literally was teaching her to dance during filming.

Another fun fact: the movie depicts Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) supplying the voice for Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) on the song "I Would", but it's actually Hagen's own voice that you hear.

Doctor Strange. Apart from a rather clunky American accent from the lead (as far as I'm concerned he'll always be Sherlock lol) I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Really entertaining 👍🏻
Sausage Party (2016)
Great... if you are 15 and in puberty.
The animation is just below the current standard but that is the only, not terrible thing about this movie. I've seen people claiming it's clever. I think it says more about those people than the movie. The humor isn't even offensive. It's simply vulgar. Nothing more nothing less. The storyline tries to be smarter than it is and falls short on every aspect. All in all it is actually bad written (No surprise there when Seth Rogen is one of the writers)
2/10
Tremors (1989)

Bridge of Spies.
Really good! Great to watch when you see the U2 everyday.
Desperation (2006)
This Stephen King story, made for TV, is another movie that shows that King novels aren't easy to adapt to the screen. Despite it's running time of 130 minutes it fails to catch the essence of King's storytelling.
Still, as a tv movie it's not all bad.

The Watcher (2016) typical trash scary Netflix movie. Movie offerings on Netflix are going downhill for sure. Not even worthy of a B movie label. Pathetic motivations, development and story. 2/10. 1 point for the good looking actress Erin Cahill who looks much younger than her age with nice legs who was half decent. Movies like this are making me think to give up Netflix altogether.
50 shades darker (2017) incredibly lazy written sequel. How the helicopter stuff gets resolved is laughably childish. An imbicele could write a better plot. 4/10. Barely watchable. Almost everything in the movie felt like "we've been here before" nothing new gets added. First one was decent I thought.
Consumed (2015)
Intriguing thriller about a conspiracy with GMO foods. Victor Garber from portraying Mr Thomas Andrews in Titanic fame plays a similarish role, not knowing that he is ultimately a bad guy in some respects. Mind opening. Whether any truth, who knows but certainly worth your time as I think it was a well crafted movie. 8/10
La la land (2016)
I understand Hollywood feels the need to go back to nostalgic times and this movie does a good job at that. But is it really that good? I think the movie is kinda dull and highly overrated. I am surprised it wins so many awards. But maybe that is just me.

Jason Bourne (2016)

Don't Hang Up (2016)
Great idea. A group of teenagers make horrific prank calls. but it soon turns against them.
Unfortunately all characters are so unlikable that you don't care for their well being, making it eventually a boring situation. Predictable but nice ending.
5/10
Fantastic Beasts and where to find them (2016)
Watched this magical adventure with my wife last night. I like the Harry Potter movies and perhaps that is why I didn't like this movie. It's bittersweet. Almost childish in a way. And half of the cgi was horrible for a movie with this budget.
I prefer a good build up for a storyline but this one was really dragging. And even my wife asked after 40 minutes if we could watch something else.
We didn't and although the movie got slightly better in the last hour I was glad it was over.
5/10
Taken (2009)
Taken 2 (2012)
Taken 3 (2014)
The three movies remind me of the first 3 Die hard movies. The first one is good. The second one is a much poorer attempt of the first and the third has nothing to do with the first two movies.
Die Hard and Die Hard 2 are based on confined spaces (tower building and airplane) Taken 1 and 2 are about kidnapping.
Where Die Hard 3 (a rejected Lethal Weapon 3 script) was more of a 'buddy' movie, Taken 3 turns into a Fugitive/US Marshalls movie. Both third installments are out of place.
And like the Die Hard series part 2 and 3 are not in the same league as it's original.
Taken 7/10
Taken 2 get a 5.5/10
Taken 3 also a 5.5/10

Manchester by the sea ~ I looked forward to the film ... Oscar worthy and all that.. It held my interest and then it just ... was... over... Pished me the heck off ... like "yeah... and THEN what?" ... 2hours 17 minutes never to be seen again ...
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
No Matt Damon in this spin off. Quite bad.
4/10
Incarnate (2016)
The movie looks good. But the story and screenplay are very poor. It's filled with people saying "whatever you do, don't do..." and thus the other person does exactly that.
But what shocked me the most was the fact that after 25 minutes they exactly told us how the sory would end. Not cryptical, not subtile and not to be missed. This shows how poor the screenplay was.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean Quadrilogy (in preparation for the new one)
Curse Of The Black Pearl - 4/5 the original and best. Straightforward witty fun.
Dead Man's Chest - 3.5/5 some laugh out loud cartoon fun (bamboo and fruit etc). Remember thinking at the time it was way too complicated. Now though I look at it like some of the modern tv series in terms of how they layer characters ave plots) and it holds up well and makes more sense viewed that way.
At World's End - 3/5 Getting a bit too clever for its own good now and much less humour to balance all the plot.
On Stranger Tides - 2.5/5 pretty dull but with some ok moments. Feels a bit tired. And they neutered Barbossa.
Hoping the new one gets back on track because the first 2 were a load of fun!

In A Valley of violence
When John Travolta is on form he is absolutely magnetic. If he is enjoying a role then it is impossible not to enjoy watching him. Happy to say here he is having a whale of a time and elevates the film every time he is on screen. Not since Hairspray has he been this good, and he is similar to Broken Arrow or Face Off levels of fun
Ably driving the plot forward is Ethan Hawke who does a good grizzly haunted dog friendly gun slinger superbly.
Hats off to the ladies too and the excellent marshals son.

Arrival
This seems to be asking the lines of what would happen if the events of the excellent independence day really happened. The answer is people would spend a lot of time staring moodily out of windows and then making astonishing logical leaps. The revelation about how changing how you communicate can alter your perception of time (which actually is a pretty astonishing idea) is thrown away and no one seems to react to it at all. It's well put together I suppose but just all rather dull.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice - Ultimate Edition (2016)
Wow. I think this was a huge improvement on an already enjoyable movie. Can understand the fear of movie studios not wanting to put out movies over 3 hours in case of viewer exhaustion. But this really is a better film. The added 30 minutes make sense and are not useless cutaways which one usually gets with extended editions. The Abyss was the only other directors version I enjoyed as much. There was more focus on why Batman and Superman ended up as rivals and how Lex Luther was puppeteering the situations. Credit to the writers for actually writing something better than what most people ended up seeing at the cinema. It makes the few added minutes of Han Solo and Boba Fett blabbering about nonsense in Star Wars look like trash. The ultimate edition of BvS adds story, backdrop and heart.
Whereas the original I would rate a 7/10 the Ultimate version probably gets an 8,5 out of 10 I'd say. If you liked the original it's definitely worth seeing. Good value at £7 for the Blu Ray at Asda.
Enjoyed it much more in my own cinema. :-)

Hah, that movie just happened to be on Netflix. Still thinking of ditching it but must say sometimes something decent pops up. I'm holding off watching all the really good stuff again (the 8 Star Wars movies, back to the future and other favourites) with the Beamer until I have my surround system set up. Will be ordering this week.
I'm thinking if going full 7.1.2 with Dolby Atmos. Never owned a proper surround system partly because of the cabling and I have a rabbit who chews through everything. but will fix it with cable trunking.
Congrats on your mega screen btw. Mine is only 106inch but physically the throw distance of the projector won't do more regardless.

Beauty And The Beast 2017
So, it is very well made, and an enjoyable enough way of passing a couple of hours. But for me there are a few small flaws. One, you can't out tea pot Angela Lansbury. So while Tale As Old As time is nicely done, it isn't as emotional or wondrous as the previous version. Two, Emma Watson does the acting side pretty well. But the singing not so much. Sure she hits and holds notes but she doesn't really belt them out. Third and finally, it is basically an identical retread of the earlier film and doesn't really offer anything new. Sure a big deal was made of Le Fou being gay, but really the only time that's different on screen to the earlier film is at the ball at the end where he ends up dancing with another guy. It's probably better that no big deal is made of it, after all some people are gay, get over it as They say. But on it's own it doesn't have a huge impact and is not really a compelling reason to watch this version over the earlier film. The beast gets a new song which is pretty decent and I think the household staff get a song that was previously only in the special edition. And there's some unnecessary gumf about Belle's mother.
Those flaws aside, it was pacey, energetic, and very enjoyable. But the earlier film is the one I'd recommend every time.
4/5. Original film gets 5.

I was almost going to catch that at the cinema. I then thought it would be best to watch Ring 2 first ( I didn't know that actually was made).
I thought it was one of the worst horror movies ever and indeed I've heard that this latest sequel was even worse than that so no chance I would waste a trip to the cinema on such a dreadful movie.
The first one was quite meh to begin with. Only the girl crawling out of the TV was scary. Other than that it was quite boring and long drawn out.
Last I saw was:
Insidious 2 (2013)
5/10
James Wan did sooo much better with The Conjuring 2.
The characters in The Conjuring sequel are far more likeable and you really feel for them being haunted. In Insidious 2 you don't really give a crap about them and thus couldn't care less what happens to them. There is no chance of getting to know the characters. The kids are constantly in bed sleeping etc. The mother is constantly walking about the hallway. Compare that to key scenes in The Conjuring 2 where you see the kids smoking/misbehaving / walking home from school / asking for biscuits etc. Why the daughter looks so much like the mother IN LAW is very strange. Insidious 2 is not a good story at all. The execution is probably fine but they should have realised this is not even as good as the first Insidious which again I thought was quite meh.
Would rather have seen them make a sequel to Oculus with Karen Gillan. It was far more intriguing and unpredictable.

Rings (2017)
One of the most boring horor movies of the year.
No wonder it flopped.
Unfortunately Warner decided that the Friday the 13th franchised doesn't get a reboot because this movie failed (as if the Ring franchise was ever interesting to start with)
3,5/10
Ah the infinite wisdom of the film studios. We won't try and make a decent Friday 13th film because people thought Ring was rubbish??? Wtf??

Apparently there was a script for fr13th. But Warner executives pushed the Ring movie forward. When it failed they concluded that older generations don't care for horror anymore and younger generations don't care for older franchise movies. So in their wisdom they decided to cancel production on the Friday re oot because it would bomb at the box office...

Which is what pissed me off about the Ghostbusters (2016) trailer and why they didn't get money from me for that one.
The original one was creepy and dark in parts.
The new one just looked like a generic bubblegum slapstick fat clumsy Melissa McCarthy stupid ass piece of crap with neon ghosts added in with CGI. To me it also seemed exceptionally stereo typically dumb. With the black woman shouting "This is a race or a lady thang isn't it / I'm from da hood so I know the streets." The pretty blonde has to lick her guns before she shoots etc. Compare all that garbage to the original which was far less racist and far less sexist then.
Horror / Scary movies seems to be the one genre where most movie makers seem to fail. Comedy is similar / next in line. They seem to just give certain movie makers and actors carte blanche based on a total garbage reputation rather than judge the script / vision which I'm sure in many if not most cases would be obvious to be a pile of stinking horse shite before a single shot is even filmed.

I just love those late 90s horrors where suddenly the teens in the films were actually people with smarts that acted pretty much like actual teens. Is this film terrifying? Well no. But I can't honestly say most of the Halloween films are either. But it does have some good jumps and black comic situations with decent actors and no one phoning it in.

Spies Like Us (1986)
Chevy Chase at his peak in this funny spy movie.
I saw this in the theater as a kid. Bought the DVD about a decade ago and finally watched it again in HD on the big screen. Long time since I laughed this much at a movie. Chase's comedy timing is just perfect. Besides, seeing it on a big moviescreen did bring back fond memories.
Sure it has flaws but it made me laugh so much I can only give this a great rating.

For some reason I prefer those classic 80's movies (must be my childhood) over today blockbusters like the Fast and Wreckless 12, or the Avenging Marvel Bunch 8 etc. There are excptions, obviously, but overall it seems like those old movies (even the bad ones) have more Heart in them than many of today's CGI and Superhero flicks.

Still as awesome as it ever was.
Until the 4K Blu Ray comes out the Blu Ray is the ultimate version. The 10-15 minutes at the end is the perfect work out for any new AV equipment. Like being there.
Whenever I watch it I still think Marty isn't going to make it back as Doc Brown is farting around with the cables on the clock tower.
The editing is sublime at the end. The thunder effects, short bursts of lightning and rousing music are all perfect.
Will always be my perfect #1 movie. Probably seen it about 50 times, if not more.

The Final Destination (Final Destination 4)
Oh dear. What a drop off in quality. Oddly enough had a much bigger budget which they spent on a lot of cheap cgi. I'd rather have less but better. The acting is dreadful. Full of characters you don't care about... but don't worry because they don't appear to care about each other much either. A decent enough race against time at the end aside, there's no tension, no drama, only cringe worthy humour. Not good.

Wow. A franchise low point. More money but it clearly wasn't spent on the script. Or acting classes. Decent bridge collapse although all the characters are so cliche that you don't care who lives or dies. And for the most part the rest of the deaths are lame with no element of surprise. The first two essentially amount to falling over badly ( actually that's not quite true but I won't say more for fear of spoilers).
The idea of killing someone else to extend your life is under used until the end but could have given new life to this franchise. The ending is quite good but it's a real slog to get there.

A tribute to the legend that is, and always shall be, Roger Moore. It amazed me to think that this film is 40 years old this year! And ok compared to modern films the action is smaller scale and obviously with 100% less cgi! But this is classic Bond at its absolute best. Gorgeous locations, beautiful women, decent action throughout but especially at the end (the command centre attack that Bond leads is brilliantly staged), and a smart script that gives Bond and XXX a much more real relationship than with any previous film apart from On Her Majesty Secret Service.
And of course our Rog on absolutely top form as Bond. He looks his best in this one, gets plenty of action (of the fighting and bedroom types), some cracking one liners, and also delivers the more serious parts and meatier dialogue perfectly.

Bunch of dumb ass script writers killed Ripley off in 3 and really wrote themselves into a corner I always think.
Having said that James Cameron has done the same with Sigourney Weaver and she will still appear in the 1 million Avatar sequels. :|
Btw Alien 1 & Aliens (2) really proved I think Hollywood was never really that sexist and why we didn't need dumb ass female Ghostbusters. Why people perceived Ghostbusters about nerdy scientist guys wanting to go into business for themselves as the pinnacle of misogynist movies I will never understand. That was never an action movie. The girl licking her gun (gun??!) in the trailer for the female version really proves Paul Feig never understood or liked the original Ghostbusters. Alien & Aliens saw a woman take on pretty much the most dangerous and scariest thing ever encountered by humans pretty much.
Other than The Martian Ridley Scott seems similar to George Lucas, totally not getting why their original stuff was so good. It seems many movie critics understand these guys better than themselves, certainly their work. I like how they talk themselves out of. They really are kidding themselves on. Especially Lucas claiming he knows what audiences would like but stylistically he wanted to do another thing. Right. That's why he destroyed the myth of Jedi "training" which I'm pretty sure everyone took as something magical that anyone could learn as to be a physical academy on a planet along with the terrible midiclorians idea in the prequels??! Because of "Style". Right George, whatever. Obviously the restrictedness he had making the original Star Wars movies actually made the original movies good and certainly not "unfinished". Ridley Scott is probably having the same issue with Alien. The original was very cleverly done and looked so real and scary. Now he can get computers to do all his work and the magic is thus gone.
I think it is too late to save the Alien franchise with the amount of mess or at least "meh" movies that has been put out. Terminator is another franchise that seems dead, but rumours of a James Cameron produced spin off recently are going around. :? Imagine the anticipation if 3 was now on its way and we didn't have all those meh sequels after Judgement Day. Holy cow, that would have been THE part 3 to go and see after all these years.
Glad Star Wars was saved and Back to The Future was left as is.
Ghostbusters is totally ruined. Not sure what Bill Murray's problem was. He never wanted to do 3 but then he has no problem appearing in a terrible spin off version that destroys the mythology of the original stuff with his buddies. And the movie I really think pisses all over Harold Ramis' grave.
The eighties were awesome for movies it seems. So many good and fresh ideas that became franchises came from that time or just before it (Alien & A New Hope), even Superman and Rocky I would put into this category really. Now they are really struggling making those franchises work (except for Star Wars, Rocky I would argue and the Nolan Batman movies).
Will they mess up Indiana Jones 5 too?
</random late night movie thoughts>
Actually, in my opinion there are only 2 good Alien movies. The original and Alien3. I don't understand the hype for Aliens. Which is merely a rip-off of the first, but with really 1 dimensional characters and standard Hollywood stupidity. In a way Alien Covenant reminds me of Aliens as all characters seem incapable of doing what they were trained for.
Alien 4 was a mess not too mention again.
I hoped Scott would be able to give a new impulse to the ( his) Alien franchise. Unfortunately he walked the same path as the failing sequels. After Alien and Alien3 this one can fight it out with Cameron's overrated sequel for third place. (I slightly prefer Aliens over Covenant atm)

Odd Thomas.
Well it's odd actually. The book is terrific and has a long slow build of gradually ramping up tension building to a huge and devastating finale. The film seems to take the plot and pick up on the quirky nature of the setting and characters and does it's own quirky thing with them. Some might say it misses the point of the book. But I don't think it does. I think it just presents a fresh and quirky spin on it. Sometimes it's much more interesting than just seeing a literal page by page adaptation. Hello Dan Brown.
Overall though I think this is one of those rare films that could do with being much longer, and slower, and gradually ratchet up the tension to unbearable levels.
So it's fun and With fine turns from the cast, but I would like to see a proper horror version of it.

I love a good B-monstermovie (Tremors, Lake Placid, Deep Rising, to name a few) and I found this title on IMDB. Had a 7.8 rating. So I figured to check it out.
Starring Zack Gallifan (Billy from Gremlins) about a father and son on a hunting trip in the mountains. They stumble upon an ancient horror that have them fight for their lives.

Jurassic World
Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb. And dumb in a way that robs of it of a lot of the fun. Sometimes, really dumb films can be really fun. Con Air for example. Face/Off. Broken Arrow. The Rock. Expendables 2. This film is SO dumb that my disbelief gets suspended too often and starts to interrupt my enjoyment of the film.
The plot basically boils down to "the park is up and running, and a big dinosaur escapes". Now who doesn't want to see that? I love the original, enjoy the second one, and tolerate the third, and I have been hoping for 15+ years to see the park up and running and one of the big ones escaping.
But then so many dumb things happen that it is fumbled really badly. I want to avoid spoilers just in case, but at a high level this is all the dumb stuff that happens:
The park is up and running and reasonably successful without us ever seeing any of the effort, investment, or initial excitement or wow factor. Means we are not invested in the characters trying to keep it going. Also, as most of the characters are so dismissive of dinosaurs, so are the viewers. If they don't care why would we? E.g. the lead older boy and even Dr Henry Wu. Fudges the pitch basically right from the start. Make us wow. Make us care.
One way they try to make us care? The "script writing 101" plot device of making the boys parents be going through a divorce. Seems to make no difference at all to the boys. Or the parents. Right up until a point in the movie where they seem to realise - oh there should be a reason for all the whining and whinging. And then hey presto the younger one starts blubbing. Ugh. The kids in the original film were also irritating. But in a largely endearing kind of a way. Not so now.
The dinosaur that escapes is presented as way too clever.
- scratching the wall as a distraction - I see the idea but it should have been presented as "has been trying to escape every day at different times testing the walls" or something. Then when the dumb humans go look at the scratches, the dino seizes the opportunity. They do not plan out strategies.
- ripping out the enormous beeping tracking sensor as a trap. No. Ripping it out because it is enormous and beeps all the time and maybe has got infected and hurts, which coincidentally means the humans can't track it, fine. Using it as bait for the humans? Stop it.
Almost all the humans are presented as way too dumb.
- no decent containment systems at the paddock. I mean, the dinosaur escapes by running out of the door. That's it? That's the containment strategy after all the problems of the original park? Unbelievable.
- a reasonably well trained response team. But only 1. So when they fail, the entire containment strategy fails.
- no huge impenetrable wall / barrier / canyon between where they breed the dinosaurs and the park itself. Just not credible.
- the emergency strategy for the people in the park is to... all group up in one place, like a dino buffet! No. That's just, you know, dumb. There would be fast, well rehearsed, emergency evac procedures. There just would.
- the sphere things can just be driven anywhere with no "return to base" command that cannot be over-ridden? NO!
The raptor training bit is quite cool but then the way they pick sides? No.
Now, at a very base, popcorn thrill level, it is reasonable fun. But it could, and should, have been so much more.
Yes, of course all of the safety and human protocols have to fail, otherwise there is no film. But the dinosaurs shouldn't be the ones with all the plans. They should be able to wreak havoc despite the very best efforts of intelligent, diligent, well rehearsed people. Not because there aren't any.
Sorry, but it's a lazy, dumb script, that robs the movie of any sense of wonder or investment in the characters and therefore only delivers a fleetingly entertaining chase B/C movie.
It could have been so much more.

Still very very nearly as good as I remember it being the first time around. Well written, great acting, and genuinely something bold and new for the franchise. Minor niggles that occurred this time? Well I love Richard E Grant but he seemed a bit out of place. Just a tiny whiff of ham in an otherwise very serious (but not humourless) film. Also, looking at it again it's a shame that the person who fights Logan and ends up besting him looked so similar. Yes I get why that was the case and they used it well emotionally. I just wonder if it would have been better with someone completely different. However, these are extremely minor niggles in an otherwise superb film.

Much better than I expected actually. A slight twist on the familiar tale and setting it in 70s Vietnam War times gives it some interesting moments. I mean mainly I think it was because they wanted to sell tonnes of soundtrack albums like with Guardians Of The Galaxy. That won't happen. But it is quite a funky soundtrack and an interesting setting.
Most of the characters are fairly interchangeable so you don't invest that heavily in them. When they die it doesn't generally have much emotional impact. And I'm sorry but Tom Hiddleston sounds way too plummy and posh to fit in with the rest of the cast.

Spiderman Homecoming
I actually wasn't blown away by this one. Tom Holland is outstanding as Spiderman and Michael Keaton is on top form. It's also not the same old origin story which is good. There's a nice amount of humour throughout and the film shows the challenges of balancing high school and super heroism nicely.
But the plot seems a little unambitious... good motivation but really the villian's dastardly evil plan basically amounts to wanting to steal some junk. And the ending is yet again our hero fighting a guy in a metal suit.
Better than the last 2 Spiderman films but I still think the Sam Raimi / Toby Maguire films remain the best, especially Spiderman 2.

War Of The Roses
An odd film really which doesn't seem to know exactly what tone to go for or what the main characters want from their relationship at all times. But brilliant performances from all 3 leads really bring it home.
I liked it but didn't love it. So 2.5/5

Lego Batman Movie
Lots of chuckles, light on guffaws. Looks great and makes the most of the Lego connection. Wears its message of the importance of hate as love and family and over coming your fears etc etc well without being over bearing. Overall entertaining but not one I'm desperate to watch again.

Although nothing to do with it, this suffers a bit from the Marvel/DC Universe disease. It's all cgi/sfx, thin storyline, but most of all it lacks the Heart and spirit.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
*spolilers*
Awful. Should have spent the evening in the lobby or in a nearby restaurant instead.
The story felt like it was one of the bad ones from the Star Trek movies, like Insurrection or so.
Awful nasally lead male character who calls himself handsome and is supposed to be the Chris Pratt here but it totally fails. Cara Delavigne or whatever her name is was a bit better bit still unlikeable for most of the "film". Rihanna wasn't too bad but her main scene would have made for a more interesting music video for her than a worthwhile scene in a blockbuster where her character ultimately is totally irrelevant or totally forgotten by the end.
Riri is conveniently written out of the story in case there are other cheap ass sequels I guess and they can't afford her OR because I guess the real revealed character of her is so weird it is not "convenient" to have her around for long. Her purple form looks like Grimace from the McDonald's characters. Also her quick random death was such a bad way to write her out. Yuk.
The two human generals look exactly like each other so it is difficult to tell them apart. You also totally don't care about them or what they want and why.
You feel the movie constantly throws distractions your way after a somewhat interesting beginning. Frustrating story telling. It isn't until the last 20-30 minutes we actually understand what the fate of the pearl species is/was and the story finally wraps up. But its conclusion comes too late and is just not satisfying or interesting.
Just throwing visuals together inspired by Star Trek / Star Wars / Avatar / Fifth Element / Total Recall does not make a good movie automatically and this is exactly proof. Even worse than the Star Wars prequels in many places.
Weak ass story, totally no motivation of the characters, nor do you feel they are really ever in danger or that the events will really affect them, totally no point. They are also very inconsistent in places. Main character has no problem smacking the hell out of a general to only 2 minutes later say to the main girl "I can't possibly do that, I am a soldier and need to follow orders". What the eff?! You totally don't feel involved because of all this. Not a single chuckle from the audience during 2hrs and 15 minutes where the movie constantly tries to throw distracting gags. It is like a cheap Guardians of the Galaxy rip off (mention of a music playlist - totally falls flat) made by that US Asylum crap rip off movie company.
Waste of time.
On par with the worst movies I have seen in the cinema over the last 10 years: Godzilla / The Lego Movie / Ghost Rider 2 / Transformers 2 / John Carter (the latter probably best example of what this movie is exactly like).
4/10
Stupid projection problems at the beginning of the screening I was at didn't help. £18 a month isn't worth this crap from Cineworld. Guess I can't blame the staff too much. You pay them crap, you get crap. Weird the problems are always isolated to the same screen of the cinema I frequent most. Will avoid screen 3 there forever. Have never understood why movie theatres cannot make a more interesting experience for everyone whilst so much is at their disposal. Why no movie soundtracks before the trailers/ads over the audio system? Why in the hell would you aim spotlights onto the screen that are left on during the preshow so the front 10-15 rows cannot see crap. If I were an ad sponsor I would demand my money back and pull the ads from the cinema chain. Odeon and Cineworld both suck. Shame we hardly have independent theatres left in the UK that could give them a run for their money. Was going to go and see Terminator 2 in 3D on the 20 anniversary of Judgement Day later this month but instead I will put the Blu Ray on and watch it in my own movie room, turn the volume up, sit back and enjoy.
Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (1999-2005)
I actually forgot how incredible bad these movies are.
The first time I saw them I thought that Revenge of the Sith was actually okay-ish. But that has everything to do with how horrible Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are. Because seeing it again, Sith is also a terrible film.
It's not just that the movies don't share any of the Star Wars Universe feeling, but the poor storyline, the dragging scenes and the bad script for all 3 movies overshadow the special effects that these movies are filled with.
Which is another problem. To start with, the sfx are already very outdated and look poor, but because the movies are basically just SFX, they lack the Heart and passion that is clearly visible in the original Trilogy and even the Force Awakens.
As I think of it, I can't think of anything good that concerns these movies. They are, and always shall be, a total waste.

So I figure you never saw Jurassic World in the cinema then :-P:twisted::lol:
As you might know I actually liked that one. Valerian was borderline unwatchable. Jurassic World had me interested but of course it's never as good as Spielberg's master original. If I had been on my own at Valerian I would have left the cinema as some people did. At all the bad movies I mentioned I did or I wanted to do that. Jurassic World was nowhere near that bad imo but sure there were cheesy moments I would have preferred to have seen done differently. Still thought it was better than Lost World & JP3.
Tonight's movie:
The Dark Knight
Masterclass movie making. DC Comics movies might not be as consistent as Marvel but when it's good it's the best imo alongside Superman from '78. Always stunning soundtracks too.
10/10
alongside Superman from '78.
Agree on Superman. That's about it though
Silver Bullet (1985)
Typical cheesy 80's movie. Not the best Werewolf movie (I think that title belongs to American Werewolf in London) but something I can enjoy from time to time.
It's time they are going to do decent remakes on some of the Stephen King movies from the past.

Annabelle Creation (2017)
The Annabelle movies are a spin off from the Conjuring movies. but they just aren't in the same league as those films.
I wasn't impressed by the first Annabelle movie and this one, although perhaps slightly better than it's predecessor, was also very underwhelmong.
I guess a few scares for the regular crowd, but that's it.

Utter piece of tosh.
I don't believe in aliens (not the landing in the spaceship ones), nor do I think UFOs are alien space craft. However I am open to theories, always.
But this piece of crap nonsense really takes the biscuit. If you think those with opposite political views might be weird / uninformed or stupid or whatever this seriously is on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL.
According to the film makers everything is a complete conspiracy and alleged random quotes that people mumbled on their death bed are supposedly solid evidence for the absolutely insane claims they make.
Only the narration from the chicken KFC drug leader Gus Fringe from Breaking Bad made this watchable but a damn shame he was wasting his time on this. Better Call Saul should have just been about Gus Fringe I think. Far more compelling than the weasel lawyer with his irritating brother. At least BCS isn't as bad as this moronic "documentary".

Prescription Thugs (2015)
Good, heart felt documentary critiquing the prescription drug problem in mostly the USA. It is a big problem and such a shame so many innocent people are getting caught up in this. Big pharma should be dealt a decisive blow. Big shame both presidential candidates didn't have this on either agenda (although Trump did mention the lobbying -
but will anything really be done?!!). The Clintons made the problem worse it seems. :-(

Juvenile tosh. Almost beats Valareian to worst movie of the year.
Incredibly badly done. Zero character development. Zero background story you could care about in the slightest. Idiotic events. Terrible dialogue and a handful of bad actors.

Dunkirk
Christopher Nolan is a superb film maker. His Dark Knight trilogy transformed super hero films and frankly blockbuster films as a whole. The Dark Knight is a tiny bit over rated and The Dark Knight Rises is a bit under rated but whatever. Inception is awesome. I love The Prestige. His early work is gripping and Interstellar is enthralling if baffling. His films always appear to be crafted by intelligent people at the top of their game and they don't assume the audience is all stupid as so many films do now. I also love that he has tried lots of different styles of film. I'm a big fan of James Bond and if, as rumoured, he directs the first film after Daniel Craig leaves I will be excited beyond measure.
So that's all his films reviewed apart from the one I've just seen.
Dunkirk is an extraordinary film. Minimal dialogue. No actual plot or specific heroes as such. Just... here's what it was like at Dunkirk. It was loud, terrifying, sometimes claustrophobic, lethal and bewildering. And through it all, there was bravery and solid determination to either get home or help others get home. It's pretty much as close to the real thing as I can imagine we will ever see. The cast are uniformly excellent and yes that includes Harry Styles. The sound effects are stunning. The film grips you from end to end.
Was it entertaining? No but then I'm not sure it was supposed to be. It was engrossing, powerful, moving, and at times unbearable.
And a triumph.

Not a movie. But great news. Colin Trevormore, the guy that made a total mess of Jurassic World, has been fired from Star Wars ep 9.
Jurassic World was an awful movie. No doubt. Bad screenplay and dialogue. But Colin made it horrible by his way of directing. It never got funny or scary because he had no feeling for it. The movie did good at the box office but it was clear that Disney gave him the job because of the financial succes, ignoring his incapability to make a movie interesting. I am happy this guy did another movie (the book of Henry) so there is no denying at how terrible this director is.
Disney fixed their mistake. Jurassic World was easily the worst blockbuster of it's year an one of the worst of this century. JJ Abrahams gave Star Wars back to the fans. How sad would it have been if Colin was allowed to destroy the entire trilogy.
Happy!

Doubt you can go by JW what Star Wars with Trevorrow could/would have been.
I hated Gareth Edwards' Godzilla. One of the worst monster movies I've ever seen and almost worst movie in the cinema I'd seen till then I'd say. Very Michael Bay-esque (in a bad way). Dumb, stupid, zero character development and very boring. Far worse than JP 3 surely. JW to me was much better than both these monster movies (Godzilla and JP3). To me JW was probably in line with JP2 but more fun and rounded.
However Edwards did an awesome job with Rogue One I thought, proving a director can surely make a movie you do like even if you hated his previous one.
Just sayin'....
I also think it is somewhat bad style to sign someone on for 2 years and then to drop them when production is about to start.
Abrahms should just be doing all 3 in my opinion. Way better than his Star Trek stuff.
TFA was his best movie so far and it was indeed what Star Wars needed.
Signing these directors on so early and tagging production on all so quickly in my opinion isn't necessary.
The franchise easily could have done with the classic 3 years between main movies approach to make it all breathe a bit more and prevent the exhaustion we are seeing with the super hero carry on.
During the mental 10 super hero battle in Civil War at the airport I really thought it was exceptionally childish and I cannot see how more super heroes in one movie can ever be good or worthwhile.
I also don't believe Trevorrow would have done a worse job than George Lucas did himself with the green screen walking & talking, green screen sitting and talking, fart jokes, a bad acting child screaming "it's working, it's working" approaches in the prequels. Think he is getting a lot of hate for no reason of his own. If people really have read his script then maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
I hope Disney at least uses the Trevorrow departure as an excuse to postpone the release of IX till Christmas 2019. 1 1/2 yrs in between really is too soon in my opinion. 2 is bad enough.
BTW a crowd interview with Mark Hamill and his thoughts on TFA actually made me think a little bit different on TFA. He thought it would have been good if the light saber force pulling out of the snow would have revealed Luke Skywalker, who then fights with Kylo Ren. To me that would have actually have been more interesting. Obviously the ending would have had to be a bit different then (I'm thinking Skywalker defeats Kylo Ren but Kylo isn't dead - since this trilogy seems to be about his redemption possibly - Skywalker looks at Rey who is on the other side of the snow because of the starkiller base breaking apart and then looks he disappears with Rey simply saying "Luke" and trying to reach out. You could still then have the map and finding Skywalker's home carry on to some extent. But Hamill's idea was a good point and would have made more sense rather than Rey teaching herself the force so easily. In that regard TFA treats the force as a little bit lame I reckon. But at least not as bad as the prequels with the insane mediclorians stuff. Don't know what Lucas was smoking at that point! Turning the whole Jedi / the force into something physical was disappointing and the Jesus/Anakin born to a virgin mother thing was borderline insane.
Sebastian.

It (2017). Loved it. Good changes but still remained so faithful to the book. The subtle reference to the book, the 1990 series, and the King universe were superb (for those It fans, keep an eye on Ben's T-Shirts). It took me back to how much I enjoyed Stand By Me. The young actors did a great job. Bill Skarsgård is a fantastic and terrifying Pennywise.

There clearly is a differense between a bad script and a bad director. In all honesty Edwards' directing in Godzilla and RO are not that different. You just didn't like the fact that Godzilla was the kind of movie that it was.
Sure JW suffered from a bad script, poor dialogue and underpar acting. But Trevorrow clearly has a certain style in directing that made the movie even worse. Bad directing choises made it a mixture of failed suspense and poor timed humor.
The only real diferense between JW and any Syfy monster movie is the amount of money they spend on sfx and cgi. His directing took away any tense scenes and destroyed the comic factor. It made the movie even more predictable and by that also quite boring to watch. And it is his style. So for me he would have ruined ep 9, no matter how good or bad that storyline is going to be.
And again, Thank the Maker as JJ Abrahams is going to do it now.
btw I love your apreciation for JW. I will never understand it though. ;)

Blade Runner. The final version.
Dull as teeth. Can't understand what all the fuss is about. Good cat and mouse bit with Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer aside, there is no drama, no tension, no sense of urgency, and absolutely nothing happens. The soundtrack makes it sound like a really bad episode of Doctor Who and the special effects are dreadful. People say "ah" but was Decker a replicant? I don't care. At all.
A grudging 2/5 as Harrison and Rutger are both good.
IT (2017)
As a major King fan I can only say that this movie disapointed me a lot. I don't really understand the hype as the movie wasn't really scary and Pennywise never made an impact.

IT (1990)
About 2/3 good. The kids are almost uniformly excellent. The adults are almost uniformly dreadful. The end is also dreadful. The big bad turns into a tiny ant and puts up no fight at all. They just kick it!
Plus points... The kids are genuinely good and the scared are pretty decent in the first half. The build up and investment in the characters is excellent and effective although sadly wasted by the adults later.
And of course Tim Curry. While not exactly terrifying he is effectively creepy and free wheeling bonkers. With a lesser performance it would have ruined the whole thing.
Really good in parts then but ruined by the adults and the ending. I can see why they remade it.

Average follow up to the nicely humorous original. I feel sorry for Stellan Skarsgard. He's much better than this. The villains motives are so basic that you don't really buy into their motivation or care if they are stopped. Anthony Hopkins, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Hiddlestone are great, as is Natalie. Not sure about Christopher Ecclestone. He's clearly a very powerful actor. But I never feel like the actor disappears so that all you see is the character. If anything he's a bit too intense. Volume turned up to 11.

Spectre
Weirdly "empty" and unimpactful film. Was more entertained by it 3rd time round but really once Blofeld comes centre stage it grinds to a halt. It feels a little like Bond by numbers all the way through. For example car chases through Rome... which is weirdly deserted so only one joke car in the chase and no risk of collateral damage to buildings or people. A train fight, because they can't hope to replicate the brilliance of the casino royale train scene. But again the train suddenly clears and no one tries to intervene or stop the train. Bond's master plan to escape the villains lair is to... um walk out. And you know, shoot people. An enormous explosion follows but they don't really seem to notice. Or have any urgency to escape. And the end chase is yet another ending that doesn't really belong in a Bond film.
But the real killer for me is the most stupid family connection plot line in the history of cinema. Blofeld reduced from an evil secret mastermind, to a whiny vengeful school boy. Utterly idiotic.
And PLEASE can we have Bond on an actual mission for her majesty next time and not yet ANOTHER official standing down. Enough already! It was shocking in Licence To Kill because it was the first time it happened in over 25 years. It's not shocking when it happens every bloody film.
Positives? Love the pre credits. Daniel Craig is excellent in the first half. Mr White is excellent. The main girl is pretty decent. The thing with the mouse and earlier the sofa is funny.
Overall not that great.

Good stuff. An understandable and plausible plot. Time spent developing characters. Effects used where required to tell the story rather than in place of a story. Hmm. I know it's intentionally naff. I'm not sure that makes it actually funny. The best parts are the actors who take it extremely seriously, i.e. Max Van Sydow, Peter Wyngarde, and of course Timothy Dalton.
I think too many superhero films are too dark these days, and or mistake being humourless for being dark, not realising there's plenty of wit and humour in The Dark Knight trilogy without having blatant comedy.

Alien Covenant
Better than I expected but not as good as Alien, Aliens, or Alien 3. Better than Resurrection!
The first hour in particular is pretty tense and ramps up the horror and tension quite nicely. Second half starts to move more into action. Bit like the contrast between Alien and Aliens actually. But never as well done as either. So here's my ranking:
Alien 5/5
Aliens 4/5
Alien 3 3.5/5
Alien Covenant 3/5
Prometheus 2/5 I think I can't really remember it
Alien Resurrection 1.5/5
Happy Death Day (2017)
Groundhog Day in a horror/thriller setting.
Girl wakes up the same day, over and over, to be killed in many different variations.
Never really scary as you know she will wake up after each kill. Still a bit entertaining. Mosr of a 'who-dunnit' kinda movie. Although my wife was annoyed that I pointed out the killer the first moment they met face to face. (so a bit predictable too, I guess)

I didn't know there were two! Presumably Amazon Video show the European version.
I didn't know there were two! Presumably Amazon Video show the European version.
The US version is 24 minutes longer and mainly contain more backstory info on Jack's alcoholism etc. Kubric decided to have two different versions because he didn't think European cinema fans needed the extra explanation and felt that the US cinema visitors wouldn't understand the movie without the extra scenes.
Kubric did not have a favorite version though.
On BluRay the US version is only released for America while the European version was released on all the other continents. Still they are both region free and work on all BluRay players. As a fan of the movies I own both versions but the US edition is kinda dragging (to me) so I never watch that one. That said, the European version is missing a few interesting moments, in particular, much of the dialogue between Lloyd and Jack, and a lot of the 'day to day' moments at the Overlook, and several scenes are cut short like Danny in the bedroom with Jack.
I believe they did the same with the streams. The US version can only be viewed from US services while all other streamings use the European version. So the amazon.com version should be different from the amazon.co.uk version ;)

Well I thought it was pretty good, the kids were all very good and there was a suitably menacing air about Derry and all the adults were quite creepy. Pennywise was also very well done. Some new scenes like the floating kids were very good and helped make sense of the line "they all float".
The only thing is... it wasn't really any better overall. For everything that was done slightly better (like the effects) there was something that was quite as good (like Pennywise).
Overall a 3/5 for me. Good but not essential viewing. Will still be interested to see the second one though.

Yup,I think Tim Curry gave a terrifying performance with his Pennywise. While this one was, imo, never scary.
Unfortunately, the TV movie was just that. Filmed for TV. It looks poor, most of the actors are B-actors at best and there are no decent effects. But in the end Pennywise made that one creepier than the theater version. For me no contest. Old 'It' knocks this one out of the ring. They must try harder with part 2.

Not as good as Oceans Eleven but a similarly cool take on a speed way robbery. All the cast are excellent. Satisfying ending and some amusing red necks. It's hard to describe but it's like ocean's eleven with lower stakes and fewer stars. Entertaining enough but not essential.

*spoilers*
For what it's worth I enjoyed the two times I saw the film but I definitely didn't see a good "Star Wars movie". There were a few hints of old Luke, the scene with R2D2. Stepping out to confront the baddie. But other than that this did not feel like we were in the same universe as Skywalker Star Wars if that makes sense. Even Luke couldn't raise an X Wing out of the water after some training from Yoda but Rey doesn't require any training at all to defeat Kylo Ren and even hold her own against Luke. This type of story telling fits in totally with millennials I feel, who want everything right now and not have to work for it. Ie when you see 22 year old girls straight out of university put "Director" as their job title on LinkedIn because they work as a recruitment agent.
I do not understand how they are going to be able to create a compelling finale to this new trilogy now.
I'd rate this movie a 7 or 7.5 out of 10 but that is not because of the story. Most of it doesn't make sense or even fits with what JJ Abrams was doing with his usual rabbit hole approach in episode 7. It was more like someone poured cement into all the rabbit hole exits here. How did the producers (including JJ) green lit the lack of time interval between Star Wars stories. This never happened before in the previous 7 movies. Madness surely?! We already got a direct movie prequel non time interval handover with Rogue One (and that was better I reckon).
Shame.

TYPO: should be 8
Anyway, I think Ryan Johnson hit a homerun. The movie has several flaws and I don't think it is in the same league as Force Awakens. But it is bold and it balances on the edge of (not) being a Star Wars movie. In that perspective it is Empire Strikes Back of the new trilogy. And I think that, in the years to come and expecting JJ Abrahams to create a fan-favorite 3rd installment, this will be the perfect -in between- episode that has created new possibilities to explore in the future movies.
SPOILERS BELOW!!!!
I expect Abrahams to 'fix' Rey's parent story. I do believe that Rey will become an offspring of... It just doesn't make sense that she has all this raw power out of nothing. I also hope there will be some more about the history of Snoke. His death was just too easy. I also don't expect to have seen the last of Luke. This is the only thing that I really had troubles with. Not his death, but what he has become. It just didn't feel right.
That said, I like the direction that Johnson took by focussing more on Rey/Kylo Ren. Killing off everyone around them that were involved in the original trilogy just seems right. They are no longer the key players and they don't fit in this new era. The love triangle doesn't have my interest btw.
All in all, this movie seems to be the perfect connection for Abrahams to create another fan-tale but with the room to try something different. After seeing this episode I am confident that the right third installment will make this a fantastic Trilogy. And I have all faith in Abrahams.

I think I would trust Gareth Edwards more with an entire Star Wars trilogy than Rian Johnson the more I think about The Last Jedi and Rogue One. :(
I actually think after The Han Solo movie and the final JJ Abrams film, which I hope redeems the Skywalker name again but indeed does give Star Wars "A New Hope"ish end Disney would take a breather with the franchise.
But I'm guessing money is the main object here and I think it is actually a bit sad we are probably going to get more Star Wars than we need and there is a huge possibility now that many of us may never see the actual finale of Star Wars in our lifetimes.
Marvel is becoming very Meh to me. I just hope it doesn't happen with Star Wars but I fear the worst.
Marvel is becoming very Meh to me. I just hope it doesn't happen with Star Wars but I fear the worst.
I agree. Marvel movies lack the Heart of being something more than sfx superhero stuff. And in a way they are all the same. And Star Wars is also heading that direction. For me Star Wars is the Skywalker story and it ends with episode 9.
I am not anxious to see all the spin offs or that Ryan Johnson trilogy. That said, I did like Rogue One. But not as part of the trilogies.
btw, for now Guardians of the Galaxy are the only Marvel movies that aren't complete and utter crap. And don't get me started on that DC Universe.
Anyway, Disney is gonna milk this cow until it gets dry. And that could mean many more of Star Wars related flix.

For me Star Wars is the Skywalker story....
*More spoilers*
For me it is that too but it is also the story of family. I really think Rey needs to be a Kenobi or ideally a Skywalker. Rey's vision in TFA makes totally no sense if her parents are nobodies.
I don't like this thing of anyone can use the force thing (Mind you I also don't like the medichlorian Jesus no father birth story either!).
I feel if this story ends with some bizarre lesson of it doesn't matter who your parents are or family doesn't matter I think that is incredibly inately dissatisfactory.
I think these innate lessons and kinship of family (which realistically allowed humans to evolve) are so vital within Star Wars, Lucas probably didn't even know what he was writing to a certain extent. I feel if you destroy that fans won't come back.
Star Wars was mostly successful because people wanted to watch these movies a million times and buy the merch etc. I think this is a sign that things are simply not right with The Last Jedi's story:
'Last Jedi' Grosses Are Collapsing With The Worst Daily Holds Of All 9 Star Wars Movies (https://www.forbes.com/sites/robcain/2017/12/22/last-jedi-daily-grosses-are-swiftly-collapsing-the-worst-holds-of-all-9-star-wars-movies/#541b76ab355c)
Instead of what we got how cool would it have been to have seen Luke raise his submerged X Wing out of the water (what he couldn't do in Empire) to save Leia/Ray/Finn.
Rey could have left earlier with the Millennium Falcon and Chewie to save Finn say if he had been captured or so and leave R2 behind for Luke. Still play that hologram but then R2 could join Luke in the X Wing to save the day. I would have spaced this a few years after TFA regardless to give Rey time for Jedi training and more significance to Finn's coma and thus Rey and Finn's relationship.
At the battle of Kraite Luke could have stopped all the lasers from the walkers like Kylo did in TFA at the beginning and either sent them back to the walkers and/or use some force mega power to raise all the walkers into the sky and smashed the bejeezus out of them. We needed some hand to hand combat there too between rebels and first order fighters and this could have explained the evening out of powers. Luke has a more extended light sabre fight with Kylo. But Luke doesn't destroy Kylo because he thinks he can be redeemed. Luke flees with the remaining rebels and Rey.
I think Leia should have died in this one. Ackbar should have sacrificed himself instead of yet another new character being introduced with the purple haired Jurassic Park Ellie. The codebreaker could have been Lando or so. Keep Snoke alive. Phasma captures Finn, who gets his memory erased somehow and is placed in a stormtrooper costume which would look like a desperate bad ending to him (like how Han Solo was put in nitrogen etc). Maybe put him in either a non significant stormtrooper suit (that looks bad - that typical one in a million never to be found again Toy Story thing) or a red one to make him a force to be reckoned with in the final episode before he is of course freed somehow. Regardless his story should end well in 9 and I don't think introducing a new love interest was a good move at all. Rey will be a Jedi so I guess a love relationship isn't quite possible with Finn but it could have been left open and at least meant they are both closer. Rey now suddenly meeting Poe and hinting at what would be a love interest only developed over one remaining episode seems very sad to me and stupid considering Finn has known Rey for more than 1 1/2 episodes already at that point.
The movie could have ended with Leia's funeral and that that triggered some major twist revealing Rey is in fact Kylo's sister and thus Leia is her mother which could trigger Rey wanting to redeem him in the final episode and destroy Snoke with Luke.
I really don't know how they will deal with Kylo, Luke's death (also no Carrie Fisher!?) and Rey's motivation but I just hope it's not some stupid thing of Rey leading a band of new Jedi fighters who were slave boys on a casino planet to fight Kylo and the First Order. Also why free the "horses" and not the slave boys. Social justice warrioring around the galaxy seems to make people do bizarre things at times. :?
I did absolutely love the Kylo/Rey light sabre fighting and slow mo start.
The walker taking position to start to shoot Luke. These scenes were merely seconds but SOO SOO GOOD. There was nothing as memorable as those bits in the entire prequel trilogy even.
Maybe it sounds silly but to me this movie is like listening to Meat Loaf's last record. It contains elements of pure genius (GATW and Souvenirs). An absolutely bizarre start (who needs the young / lightsaber handover - no time between stories), some dissatisfying moments and just not what we are used to from Meat and Jim (and Star Wars). Both these products seem to lack that precise bit of polish to make them both almost the best from two 40 year old franchises which I believe they could have been. Both seem to have important elements missing (another great song in Braver - body / more family connection in SW). Strange how these things can pan out when you start thinking about them....
At least SW has the benefit of having one more major episode remaining for redemption. (Though I'm sure we will see main style episodes 10/11/12 too!).

It is looking like The Last Jedi is going to become the worst Star Wars film ever made, worse so than the prequels even. By far the most polarising one anyway.
I think they made huge mistakes here. Rian Johnson should be removed from having anything to do with Star Wars from now on. If Kathleen Kennedy cannot see that she should go herself.
Such a shame.

Yes, it is Empire Strikes Back all over again
Not many people remember that Empire got kind of the same heat when it played in theaters. In the end it is now considered to be the best of the Star Wars movies by most fans. I am not saying Last Jedi will become that, but I do think that (depending on JJ Abraham's 9th episode) this will become a movie that will gain a lot of love. Despite some poor decisions made, Last Jedi, unlike the prequels, has a Star Wars feel to it.

Batman Begins and the Dark Knight
First though, a little love letter to Christopher Nolan.
I remember being wowed by Batman Begins when it came out at the cinema. It's the film that got me interested in Christopher Nolan, and made me go back and watch Memento and Insomnia and love them both. It got me booking tickets to every new film he makes and getting all his films to watch at home.
His films feel crafted by people who know what they are doing. He doesn't treat you as if you're the lowest common denominator and need every little thing explained or that you will only be able to maintain your attention level with lashings of unnecessary cgi blood and gore.
This approach to film making revitalised the Batman franchise big style and super hero movies in general. The film is populated with believable people acting on their beliefs and emotions.
And people call this and the follow ups grim... this is the mistake eg DC makes now when they go "dark". There is plenty of wit and humour, but no puns. Characters say funny things, because that's what people do. Not because someone has counted the number of dark things happening and inserted a bad joke into the script every 5th bad thing.
And people also accuse him of making cold emotionless films. It's true that generally he doesn't go in for melodramatics or over theatrical performances. He doesn't tell you how you should feel every single minute. He tells the story and relies on quality actors and relatable characters to convey it to you so that you feel how you want.
How can you not feel devastated for poor young Bruce watching his parents get murdered? Or be horrified by the Joker and his corruption of Harvey Dent.
Anyway I love these films and all of his others so don't be too surprised if I allocate some top marks!
Batman Begins 4.5/5
Terrific origin story well told, turning Batman into a relatable symbol and legend that you can really root for. Mostly quality supporting cast (with the only one not making as much impact as maybe you'd hope for being Katie Holmes... she's not bad exactly just outclassed by everyone else). Great baddie in Liam Neeson, nice simple plot, mission firmly accomplished.
The Dark Knight 5/5
Genius level film making. Astounding acting from Heath Ledger, excellent plot that massively raised the stakes in what you could expect from a blockbuster movie, quality supporting cast. I forgot to mention Christian Bale before... excellent at both Bruce Wayne and Batman, really sells the commitment to the symbol and to Gotham and the struggle to balance that with real life. Extraordinary.

People give this film a hard time for all sorts of reasons. Ok so Bane is not quite on the level of the Joker. But that's like saying 22 carat gold isn't as good as 24 carat gold. Maybe not but it's still mighty fine and better than almost everything else out there. Extra points for Catwoman though. If Mr Nolan is looking for an idea for his next film, how about her then? Wow.
And yes Batman sits out quite a bit in the middle and then sweeps in at the end to save the day. Sounds exactly like what the hero of the piece normally does. You understand that Batman is Wayne who is in a pit yes?
Another intelligent, emotional, quality film, shining a mirror on the sadly still current state of the world and turning it into fun dramatic thrilling action.

Sure it's still a great success. If they only want to go on that they could give Rian Johnson every single Star Wars movie from now on.
I reckon they'd be making a mistake as undoubtedly they alienated at least some hard core fans here by taking such liberties with the force and painting Luke Skywalker as quite a different character than most people remembered/wanted him still to be.
Sorry Andrew, but your math makes no sense.
Even the Jumanji one. So Jumanji had a better monday but lost on friday/sat/sunday, making Last Jedi the #1 of the new years weekend.
I understand you dislike the movie and try to back it up with numbers, but they aren't making much sense.
The comparison with Rogue One doesn't fit as the numbers on the NY weekend are almost the same but TLJ already has made 100 million more than RO at this time.
As for the numbers with TFA (which btw shattered every record in such a short time) the shorter numbers on TLJ are no surprise. It's exactly what was expected. Besides, the 2nd SW movie, so far in both other trilogies, always came short to the first movie. The Empire strikes back (TESB), now considered by most fans as the best of all, didn't do as well as the original in numbers and in fact was considered a poor sequel by many fans in 1980. Much like TLJ now.
BTW, numbers don't tell me too much. Purely based on those numbers TFA would be a better movie than Star Wars (1977) and Avatar would be the best movie ever made.
But based on the expected numbers the truth is that TLJ didn't suffer from the bad reviews from a part of the fan community at all, as it actually stays on the same track as what was prognosed. At the long run Disney hoped to reach the 600,000,000 dollar mark, domestic. It seems likely they will reach those numbers. And by the numbers Disney already calls this a box office succes.
I still believe that TLJ will be a great bridge to connect the trilogy with JJ Abrahams being able to take the story of Rey, Kylo Ren (and even Luke) to a great conclusion. I don't think TLJ is in the same league as TESB but if you look at the original trilogy, TESB is the odd one out. I think that TLJ will have that same place in this trilogy.
All said, Disney will keep producing SW and SW spin-off movies as long as they keep making money out of it. And like all that Marvel crap that gets released about every two weeks (or so it feels that way) the SW movies will remain one of the Disney milk cows. So brace yourself. They won't be necersarely good, but they will come in huge numbers, every single year, again and again and again.

Well I do agree that it has upset some of the more hard core fans. Presumably not as much as the largely unwatchable prequel trilogy. But either way I was ready to see something new from Star Wars. My understanding was always that the force is in all living things and it makes sense to me that certain people will be more attuned to it than others. Jedi get extra training to help them master it.
The Leia moment I get came out of nowhere. But considering who her father and brother are it would be much odder if she had no force skills at all even if they are usually dormant. And surely at that final moment that's exactly when you'd expect instinct to kick in and do whatever it takes to survive.
As for Luke... I can imagine the absolute overwhelming horror and fear with in him as he realises he may have created a new Vader. The temptation must have been overwhelming as you can see by Mark Hamill's powerhouse acting. But even with all that he realises he can't go through with it.
I thought it was a great movie with lots of humour, action, and fresh and surprising plot developments. Exactly what I wanted in other words.
I don't think anyone realistically expected it to match Force Awakens at the box office and I doubt anyone's thinking it was a mistake as it will probably end up taking 1.3 billion dollars or so.
For me if you want everyone to be exactly as they were in the original trilogy, go watch that.
Not dissing anyone by the way just my thoughts on the film :)

I'm doing exactly that. :D
Star Wars (1977)
10/10
Still stunning 41 years on. Incredible effects, set & production design, characters & development, music, imagination, future possibilities and direction. Makes the clumsy unsatisfactory story telling of the latest instalment The Last Jedi look like pure trash to me. Rian Johnson is a complete hack compared to George Lucas in my opinion and not worthy of the same ending credit (written & directed by...) on such a big movie. Johnson had me fooled with the great visuals and perhaps that's what he should pursue if he wanted to play on his strengths (Director of Cinematography or so). But story telling wise the original still reigns supreme so much more.
