Just read this...

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, was killed by a stingray barb through the chest on Monday while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said.

"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred.
"He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury," he said.

Police and ambulance officials later confirmed Irwin had died and said his family had been advised.

I love watching this guy on the tv. Very sad. RIP Steve.

This news has really shocked the world. Steve Irwin was a really great guy, and a true lover of animals. I really enjoyed watching his shows, and his death will be a great loss to his profession. Hopefully his work will be carried on by his family and others, in his name. All out thoughts our with his family at this time. :(

R.I.P Steve Irwin.

Are you all nuts? He was such an idiot:!: I mean he was not doing documentay films, just lurid wildlife show. The man was so irresponsible, most because took his son (not older than 2 years I think) to the wild animals.

Never saw such an irresponsible guy.

I am nod said because his dead. Sooner or later, it had to happen, because he did such lurid and crazy actions for his pseudo wildlife show.

I am sorry for his family, but not for him.

I'm sorry to have heard the news, I've always enjoyed watching his shows, and I think he was the best of the rash of impersonators who seem to have come wandering along after him...

Maybe he wasn't the most responsible of people (I saw the clip of him taking his son into the croc enclosure too) but he's done a lot for the conservation of endangered species all around the world - RIP Steve.

It's a sad loss indeed, but you kinda felt it was going to happen sooner or later. You don't mess around with crocodiles and deadly snakes like he did and not accept a certain life threatening risk.

I feel bad for his wife and kids, they hadn't been informed of his death before the news agencies started broadcasting it.

A very sad loss indeed. He did amazing work for animal conservation. Some of his stunts I'm sure were purely for entertainment value but it was his fearless approach to extremely dangerous animals and his knowledge and charismatic personality that opened the world's eyes to how endangered many species are.

RIP Steve.

Sorry, but for me he is as charismatic as George W. Bush and 50 cent.

Luckily his freak "crocodil show" was cancelled in german tv and how could I respect some one who takes his own baby-son to the crocodiles?!

I don't agree with some here. This guy done amazing work, and loved animals. Sure he took risks, but he was living life to the full, and the shows he made , were to show , how beautiful these creatures are. His death is a big loss, wonderful man. :(

This is really shocking news - found out today at school in Biology..... I am really upset as he has done alot of work over the years and leaving two kids - aged 3 and 8 with a wife running a zoo is quite sad.... I wish the best for Teri and co and I hope they will continue the running of the zoo for many years to come and I rekon, Steve would be VERY proud of her and his kids..

This news still hasn't really sunk in!
I cannot believe that he has died in this way, he was always a risk taker and nothing seemed to faze him, I guess he died doing what he loved doing but it is still a tragedy, he still had the rest of his life and two beautiful children.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this sad and lonely time.

R.I.P STEVE IRWIN

shock, sadness, thoughts for terri, bindi and bob......

Steve encouraged so many young people to become interested in wildlife..

Steve had a unique manner, and will greatly missed by all the children and adults whose lives he touched with his many television programmes..

I sincerely hope that his work and conservation will be a lasting legacy to such a 'daredevil'....

Didn't really watch any of his shows, but when you think he was only 44 and had the two kids, it is quite sad; especially considering only one other person has been recorded as dying from a stingray sting in Australia!

He was apparantly stabbed in the chest with the stingray's barb (the tail which is long and like a serated knife) which is apparantly a big problem amonst fisherman over there.
This is what i have just read don't know it to be true myself though

Not a crocodile, not an aligator, not even a snake.

A bloody Stingray :wtf:

Shame though, he was a very entertaining bloke to watch

Not going out tonight, but may I propose we all have a pint of snakebite at the weekend to see him off proper? 8)

On a serious note, I hope Terri starts to take a less hands on role in the buisness now.

It's a very dangerous game at the best of times, but now those two kids have lost one parent, it wouldn't be fair to let them risk losing the other

God rest you mate

Very sad.

Especially given that only 1 or 2 people a year die from stingray related accidnets.

I heard him saying some years ago something like: "Everybody thinks IŽll be killed by a crocodile, so I have to be very careful to prove them wrong"

Just remembered a piece of Russian poem...of course, won't be able to translate it...but I think you can all get the gist...

Don't ever separate with those you love...
Don't ever separate with those you love...
Plant your roots firmly into them...
And every time say good bye forever...
And every time say good bye forever...
And every time say good by forever...
When you're leaving only for a while...

I'd just like to say re: him taking his baby son in wih the crocs: if the baby was in any danger, then Steve would never have done it. He was a professional and knew exactly what he was doing, he would never purposely have endangered the lives of those he loved most.
There is so much more I could say, but it's not the time.
A sad day indeed, he will be missed greatly.
R.I.P. Steve, what a legend.

What a way to go
Read this news article, it tells how he was stabbed in the heart and pulled it out just before losing conciousness and he was filmed doing it, what horrendous viewing that must've been:( . whether you like the guy or not you have to admit he was definately one tough cookie.

Absolutely....

On another article I read also, i think it was his manager, spoke about how he watched it back and said it was terrible, he was actually watching some one die as he pulled the barb out..... I also read some where on the net and before Steve was going to do this dive and things he was talking to his manager again and he said, whether true or not, that on land he was agile and quick, and knew what he was doing, but if there was one place he was going to go it would be the ocean......unberlievable:(

Like you say DJ, absolutely one tough cookie, but horrendous.

I don't usually get annoyed at things I read online, but I find that comment very harsh, uncalled for, and downright offensive. He loved Bindi and Bob to bits, and it was damn obvious.

I was gonna save my 1000st post, but Steve you deserve at least that dude. Hats of to you, you were one of a kind and have entertained millions around the world. I for one have great admiration for what you did.

If mankind were 10% as positive about life as you were this world would be a better place IMO.

And another one now. Aussie Motor Racing Legend Peter Brock has died in a Targa Rally in Western Australia. He was 61. Last weekend he attended by invitation the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. He will be sadly missed here.

It's been a hell of a week: we have lost Steve Irwin, Colin Thiele (an author, most famous for Storm Boy, which some of you will know), Don Chipp (a politician), Peter Brock (a motor racing legend, and the face and name of motorsports in Australia), and today, Don Lunn, a DJ who made breakfast radio the way it is now.

On behalf of the Aussies, presumptious as this might be, thanks to you all for your commemoration of Steve.

Yeah, there are a lot of lowlife scumbags out there. That blows goats, it's not on, and the majority of people around here are disgusted at that type of behaviour and response. GRRRRRRR....

Thanks for noticing. :)

killing animals out of revange for Steve... thats sick! He would not want that to happen. So don't call them fans from Steve!

Okay the guy was crazy, but he learnt me more about animals then my teacher at school. ;) I really liked the way he toldes us about crocs... he was able to tell something good about every animal he could find. He was really in love with every animal he could found. Its sad this happened... also for his family and friends!
