This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic.
Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!!

Blind As A Bat (7)

The next single song is Blind As A Bat what is not a bad choice but I think not the best. This song is the new rock style mixed with Meat Loaf. But...

When I heard this song at first time my problem was Meat's voice. The piano at the start is really nice but Meat's voice is very bad. In a Steinman forum anybody did a vocal demo of For Crying Out Loud. You should compare that with this one. I know, I know... Meat is 60 years olda soon. But... this is the result if somebody doesn't go to a teacher in his career. I suggest it to rockfenris always! :)

My score: 7

Average: 8.25

9 if not 9.5!
The only thing I dislike is the long note on "your light sets me freeeeeeeeeee" and then the short istrumental part and then "I´m not afraid of the past...:"
The radio edit is better in that point "sets me free--I´m not afraid...."

Makes it much more dynamic IMO.

Also like the way the first and the second part are connected with the "with every step" bridge!

Definitely one of the best songs on the album, if not the best!:D

Meat did actually go to a vocal coach in preparation for this album......... You are one of very few people who think these are bad vocals......... I personally think they are his best since Bat 2!

These are not bad vocals, it seems to me they are supposed to be like this. Great song, and everyone who has listened to Bat 3 with me, all like this song, although it is not my fave on the album. Something catchy with it, soft melodic mixed with a rock edge, great song, GREAT VOCALS, 9/10.:D

I like this track alot. The lyrics are strong and meaningful, it's very well produced, its easy to listen to and it builds all the way through. 9 1/2 out of 10. Not 10/10 beacuse of Alive and What about love being as good but more upbeat.

He has a trainer, that's sure... becuase he needs... he is out of rhythm in the album and concert (what I heard on youtube) a few times... the most in Seize The Night, Blind As A Bat, Future and Bad For Good

If you listen to poor quality recordings on utube you can expect to be disappointed imo. It's just about the worst place to listen to anything. The only things I downloaded before the album release were the ones that Meat had put out because I knew they'd be of good standard. I was happy to wait for the rest .. and now I have the album to listen to, and I'm so glad I waited.

On the album, and live his vocals are strong and fine. He's rarely been better. BAAB is for me a compelling and beautiful song .. delivered perfectly. I'd rate it full marks as I can't think of anything I'd want to change about it .. except play it again :-)

I honestly think he sound's better now than he has for year's. At the RAH BAAB was outstanding and i would say it sounded better than the album version.

Meat's voice is EXCELLENT on the Bat3 album, as well as in his "live" promo performances for Bat3.

When he sang BAAB in NYC last month, it just blew me away...even better than the recorded version. It was AMAZING!!!

As for Youtube.. most of the stuff on there, is made by amateurs, with unprofessional equipment, or they are compressed so much so.. the quality on most of them, weither they're of Meat Loaf or anyone/anything else, is very poor in general, sound wise.

From my review:

If "Blind As A Bat" doesn't get released as a single, something's wrong. Probably the best non-Steinman track on the album, with a strong chorus. I have two quibbles with the song, one being that the last two chorus repeats start to drag, and the other is that there's a section in the bridge that not only borrows the words from "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad", but also the phrasing. It's annoying, but I've learned to accept it.

8.5/10

I've got to agree with virtually everyone here, Blind As A Bat is a great song, I love the lyrics, I disagree strongly that the start is poor vocally, in fact I think it's really excellant. Also I went to see the Royal Albert Hall show and it was fantastic live, in fact I thought it was Meats best song vocally at the concert. I think it's a very emotional song and Meat puts alot of emotion into the performance.

album versions a big pile of dung, definitely not steaming as its very stale, works ok as a radio edit, much better live where the production is good, i reckon a 5.5, maybe 6

Middle of the road, average, fluffy pop, filler track. Yet it is amongst the best on the album.

The production is so damn bad.
I hate the cheap guitarsolo. Put that one out and put a lot of backing vocals and crushing piano in!

I am not sure about this one. The title is a cheap reference to BOOH. (BTw a bat is NOT blind).
I don't think this is a Steinman imitation. This song has a real chorus. But the chorus is not a classic. It is catchy but I doubt if I still like it after a year or so.

Meat's voice is awesome from start to finish.

I like "my final words on the final page will be your name". Look at the backsleeve, ladies & gentlemen.

At this moment I rate 7/10. Pretty bad for a bat song.

No, you just think it's bad vocals because you can't hear properly! Even in 'Bad' professional reviews the reviewers have always said that his vocals are very hard to fault......... I don't know which album you've been listening to......... Maybe it's the Budapest version that's bad because it sounds great everywhere else.

I love this song and, like post Bat II albums, I never thought (maybe naively)
about who wrote the song, I just liked it or not. But on this one (and feel
free to tell me I'm an idiot for thinking so) I honestly thought it was an old
Steinman song that had been brought into Bat III. It was only reading threads here,
and then checking the CD booklet, that I realised it is not a Steinman song.

Please don't misunderstand this as an 'I don't like Jim comment',
cause to me there is no finer song and album than Bat Out of Hell
and I hold both Meat and Jim (and Todd and others) in the highest of regards for this.

I just think that this great song shows that Meat is supremely talented when he is given quality material, regardless of who wrote it.

Really didn't like it the first time i heard it but it's growing on me...the intro doesn't do much for me, but again like bad for good, as the song goes on he really gets into his stride

I wanted to post again because i've been listening to the album for a couple of months now, so I think I can judge the song and the album a bit better.

I just have to say that Blind As A Bat is one of the best songs Meat has ever done. One of the main reasons for this is that it's one of the heardest songs to sing he's ever done. It requires such power vocally it's amazing. So he scores big points on this. It's just such a powerful song that builds beautifully, from starting off slowly and then getting into a good pace, then having a nice interlude before the powerful finish.

To summarise, amazing song, incredibly powerful, very hard to sing.

10 out of 10

p.s. White On High should do an average score for each song based on peoples scores.

This is my favorite on Bat3; glorious melody and emotion; Meat is at his peak and absolutely awesome, and even that is too mild to describe his vocals. The album version is great, but live is even better with Meat in full emotional expression - this song obviously means a lot to him.
Has to be 10/10.

I like this one. It's (almost) everything a Meat Loaf song should be. Massive chorus, massive arrangement. As good as any other non-Steinman Meat Loaf song. Still not convinced it's a Bat song, though.

Quality tune, with lots of light and shade in the performance. If I didn't know, I would have said that it was a Steinman number. Destined to be on golden oldies radio in about 20 years time!

was talking about the arrangement, not the vocals :p

My favourite version is the Ken Bruce 'live' session. It's got the superior live arrangement, the good album vocals and it's shorter as it leaves out a lot of that stuff that draws out the album version.

Evil One
30 Aug 2009, 21:14
Shorter? Unless my memory is playing tricks I thought it was about 6.30 long and the album version is about 5.50.

Nope, just an added guitar solo and extended piano intro
