You can if you're a mod, if you're not a mod, then you have to follow strict ruling. It's a kinda double-standards thing we've all come to expect

 Post on topic please, as per forum rules.

It's been well pointed out that we must all obey by them, so be it

That's not strictly true. When I questioned this in a now locked thread. R said this:

I wouldn't worry that much about going off topic. I mean, yes - it's listed as an infraction worth 5 points with 10 days. But does that really hurt, or remove privileges? No. You would have to do that in a much higher frequency or on purpose like declaring that this thread is now about sharks, like 3 times in a row. It should serve as a reminder, that's it.

I thought this new infrication system was to avoid all this misunderstanding with differing opinions on rules :?

I hope this isn't just because of my comment to you Neil as I do think your comments in first post on this in this thread about going off topic was aimed at me.

I agree Lucy

I think for me anway the best bet is not to post. For a while anyway. This is no fun no more as they say. I don't have much time anyway lately without having to think about everything I post over and over and then having different mods seeing it different ways etc. I'm finding it more and more stressful reading posts on here and frankly I can't be arsed with the stress. There ya go Neil thats off topic and swearing. Give me some points and I can have a nice rest for a while

Deb, dunno if you saw my post in a Site Feedback thread ( before it was locked, surprisingly ) but as I said, this forum is going the way of a certain other ML forum which I won't name; people are sick of stress, of reading crap, and they're just gonna leave - myself included.

Neil, yes I know this is off topic, there is no need to post that it is.

 Well after reading and re-reading the posts in the world chart position thread, I found that I could..........

Answewr the off topic posts and go further off topic - Not good.

Ask the thread to go back on topic - Not good.

Decide the thread had lost all sence and locked it - Not good.

So, only option is, split thread to site feedback.

I'm trying to think of a polite way to describe what this thread is about and it's just not happening...

**for the record will people please note that Neil split this from another thread and I did not start this one, before anyone jumps down my throat**

Yes Neil I'm well aware of that, but the last time a thread was split like this I accused Kev of saying something that didn't come from him due to the thread being under his name, so I was simply preventing the same from happening again...

I don't know if this has been clumsy, but there is no rule forbidding to post off topic in a thread. But, I consider it as being impolite to repeatedly do so, but in general I don't mind the odd off topic post in a thread. What we do have is one/two infraction levels for people that deliberately (try to) hijack or kill a thread. That's something completely different. Don't mix up infractions and rules.

Exactly - that's my point.

If a thread has been completely "hijacked" and is extremely off topic then fair enough, I'd expect someone to get it back on track, but there's absolutely no need for "get back on topic" posts after one post - face to face conversations stray a little and get back on topic, I don't see why it can't happen here!
