Actually, Angela Landsbury originated the role of Mrs. Lovett on Broadway...I understand she was brilliant...

She played quite a few nasties while young.

Interestingly he was the first one to do both roles live, before him all the Hyde parts were recorded on tape and the voice was alienated.

Rob Evan probably did the best job at it, take a look for confrontation from the 2006 J&H ressurection album.
