Have just been told by a friend I've known for years that he "has feelings" for me. I feel really ill.

And that probably was a reason you were friends for so many years...

So what am I supposed to tell him? How do I tell him firmly without upsetting him but without leaving any doubt in his mind that I'm not interested. :(

Very simple...say what it is...you always thought of him as a friend...and never had any other feelings or ideas...and that you would hate to loose him as a friend...and if he really has feelings...you will not loose him...but if he doesn't...then it was never worth it...

From a bloke's perspective (who did the very same thing as your friend has) the key is to make it clear. It is better to be honest and upfront, rather than make excuses that leave him feeling their is still the possibility. Honesty is always best in the long run!
