All the over hyped comedies i've seen lately (like Be Kind Rewind, Tropic Thunder, other stuff) have had moments of real laugh out loud moments, but they are too few and far between. Something funny will happen, you'll get a quick laugh, and then it's onto the story for twenty minutes till something funny happens again. Guys like Laurel & Hardy are a completely different league. Their comedy is much more rapid fire and they can keep your attention because you know if something funny isn't happening right now it's because it's building up to another laugh. Comedy heros 8) |

They were true comedians! |
nah, youre just not smart enough to get the good humour :p
seriously though, I'm not a big fan of slapstick. I dont know why, but after the fifth time a man gets hit by a piano it's just not funny anymore for me. I can watch slapstick comedies for about ten minutes before I get bored. I rather like comedies (or movies in general) that give your brain something to do. For me it's ten times funnier if I have to think about a joke a few seconds before I get it because it's been worked around five corners, than laughing at another man's pain over and over and over and over and over and over (you see where Im going with this...) |
I understand your point and was stunned at my first American show with pies flying into everybody's face...
Still and all...you have to consider times when these 2 comedians performed and give them their due... Or maybe it is age...as I am getting older...I prefer comedies to dramas...slapstick to intricate humor, etc...life is hard enough as it is... |
not saying their movies have a bad kind of humour...by god they wouldnt have millions of fans around the world then. It's all a matter of taste i guess...

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
One of my all time favourite films (and books), love it. |
the Island - Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson...

Meh... it was okay, good enough that I watched it until the end, not so good that I would buy a copy... lol..
Watched Meet Joe Black while doing the ironing earlier, then Payback after tea, and currently watching The Sting in honour of Paul Newman... |

v good switch off the brain stuff and a lot of fight scenes like bourne and casino royale. |
Pan's Labyrinth.
Think I'm going to need to watch it again when I can pay a little more attention, kept getting distracted last night but it seems pretty good. |

:up::up::up: |
Not a movie, I know, but I watched all of the C series of QI yesterday... Have The Salton Sea planned for later...
|
I watched the Da Vinci Code the other day, I think I'm the last person on the planet to see it. Found it very interesting, and certainly got me thinking, imagine if it were true!!!!
Carole |
I adore The Da Vinci Code (though yet another example of the book kicking the film's ass!) and I've got to say, without starting a religious debate, I found the story and theories more believeable than I did every piece of religious education I was taught in 12 years of school!
Angels and Demons is supposedly in the making too, can't wait to see it but there's no way they'll be able to capture the book in a feature length film |

AVP followed by AVP2 (made bubbles sit through both of them)
I thought the idea of making it into some kind of teen horror/disaster movie was kinda strange, though you have to give the filmmakers credit for not trying to copy AVP. AVP3 is supposed to be much better...we'll see... |

And as to the book Angels and Demons...I found it to be sloppy seconds... |

At least some research and accuracy was used, unlike his earlier two efforts.

I preferred Angels and Demons I loved the Da Vinci Code film and i cant wait for the new film i might even drag myself to the cinema for it lol!!

As works of fiction they're very good for that genre, certainly far better than many others on the ookshelves.. His books have improved in content and subject matter, and I'm sure the next one will be a good read when he gets it finished.

Next ones about the Masons and Mozart i think!!

I think it's as much a case of hitting the right subject matter at the right time and hence getting a decent amount of press exposure and public interest in a book written when the authoers writing style has matured. I think he'd probably earned enough from the previous books to enable enough time and money to be spent on the research of the latter.

The Solomon Key is the working title of an unreleased novel currently in progress by Dan Brown, author of several novels, most prominently Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code. According to current information, The Solomon Key will be the third book involving the fictional Robert Langdon, a Harvard University professor. No release date has been announced.
This according to Wikipedia...didn't we have a reading thread somewhere here??? Solomon Key...NOW...that is MUCH more interesting subject... |
Quote:
Next one "The Solomon Key" is supposed to be about the freemasons in and around Washington and is supposed to feature the Yale secret society which G W Bush was a member of .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull_and_Bones (although we all know how accurate this can be ) A future book is rumoured to feature Mozart's association with the masons. |
Don't think Mozart had much time or inclination to be involved with anybody/anything but his music...and I won't read anything about Bush...had enough already...

the thing that annoyed me the most about the da vinci code film was that they sucked all the chemistry that the two main characters have in the book, there's a spark going throughout and the film just ignores this...also i didn't think Hanks was the greatest of choices...maybe if they would have had some chemistry between the characters it would have worked better

I personally thought Angles & Demons was better than the da vinci code. The code was way overhyped IMO.
Could be a little biased though, as I've read A&D while being on holiday in Rome... His other two books I found rather mediocre...Had a bit of a feeling he was telling the same story over and over again... |

Death Race.
Quite a good "guys' switch off your brain and sit back" type of movie. |
  :faint:   !!! |
last movie i watched that was decent was Meet the Spartans, i loved it and found it very funny.
|
Iron Man DVD.
Pretty good flick besides being a bloody Audi commercial. |
Mmm, Johnny Depp
We tried to watch Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid the other night, in honor of Paul Newman, but it was a real snooze. We only got halfway through. |
Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex
|
Be Kind Rewind.
Awful I thought. Looks like it was made by amateurs and Jack Black just happened to stroll along. A few interesting ideas and just a very, very few laughs. Definitely do not recommend this. Disappointing. Terrible cinematography btw, countless shots where you don't see the person on screen who is talking. Crazy. |
The Brave One.
Think this is a really good film with Jodie Foster, brilliant actress. Seen it before in the cinema, but worth a second watch and definitely made up for the awful comedy I saw yesterday. |
Elizabeth The Golden Age ... watchable, but not as good as I thought it would be

Devil's Advocate. Clicking over the channels last night and saw it was on. Started watching and really got into the story. Was enjoying it a LOT and then the last 20 mins happened :wtf: Worst u turn since Bobby came out the shower  Makes the use of a deux de machine look sophisticated :nope: Brilliant film, crap ending  |

Wall-E
Loved it!! Soooooo funny, cute, and beautifully animated!! Iīll see it again tomorrow  Itīs incredible how theyīve done such a brilliant movie without any dialogues/monologues at all!!! I didnīt see quite a few of the funny scenes cos I was still crying with laughter cos of the previous funny scenes  |
IT again will never get bored of this film, Tim Curry is creepy as pennywise great horror. Off topic but there are rumours of a remake in the near future!
|
Won't surprise me about an IT remake. They like to remake Stephen King stuff it seems. They did the shining as a tv series and I thought it was pretty good too, though obviously not as good as the original film.
|
I actually thought the tv series of the shinning was better as it followed the book more accuratley lol. Trouble is most of the SK movies are terrible but i am excited about the IT remake as there is so much more they could have added in the original one. (Although it would have made the film about 8 hours long)
|
They should remake the running man imo. The book version is great.
|
Yea and without Arnie.

Who would you cast as Ben Richards? |
Priceless
A French film with subtitles, it was very good and silly in parts. |
The Exorcist 2.
Better than I expected, though by god I would never call this a horror movie. More like a mediocre adventure movie. |
Be kind, rewind - okay film, pants ending...

I liked the idea, liked their versions of the films, only problem was the film just sort of seemed to stop dead, and we were left with a load of unanswered questions....
|
I actually quite enjoyed that film, and I said so a few pages back. the ending was pretty weak, though. but then I loved the movies they spoofed, especially ghostbusters, so it was always gonna be a winner for me
 |
I watched Dear Frankie the other night It was a really sweet little film helped by the fact it had Gerald Butler in it!! Boy that guy is gorgeous!!
|
Exorcist: The Beginning
good hollywood blockbuster, but (as the other sequels) wouldnt by far call this a horror movie. The ending felt a bit like a spoof of the original movie to me :? |
The Bucket List
|
Miss Pettigrew Lives For the Day followed closely by Iron Man
|
The Village. Great film, even though I guessed the twist within 15 minutes or so of it starting.
|
The last film I went to see was SPACE CHIMPS with my kids .
Greta film if you like kids films! |
D.O.A (1988 version)

Just watching The Ruins - two down so far, four to go....

Have to agree RJ...The Sixth Sense is truly stunning, still makes me jump goodness knows how many years after seeing it. The Village is very good with the Shyamalan features that I like, but following The Sixth Sense I thought his other films have been a let down
