I don't very often agree with our Prime Minister, but he's correct in calling them mass murderers.

I'm really feeling for the poor sods up north with their floods. Our fires have overtaken their plight and I hope they receive the full support they so deserve to get their communities back together too.

Where I live, we've only copped two or three minor grass fires and that's how I hope it remains. Next weekend is shaping up to be another bad one, with hot northerlies brewing. For once, I wish the weather guys would get it wrong. We're busily rotary hoeing all our (crunchy dead) grass around our home. Apparently, that's been the saving grace for some homes. Gotta at least try.

I saw that on yesterday's news, it's an awful cruel touch of fate...and something of a shame the excess water from the north can't somehow easily be drained (thus also reducing flooding) and transfered to the south to be used to put out fires.

As for those responsible for starting the fires...no words can describe that...I cannot imagine why anyone would...and only hope they get their comeuppance. (as for the suggestion of fastening them to a burning tree ...I'm not sure death's a harsh enough punishment when you consider the losses of all those affected).

England (on the whole, I don't mean individuals) makes such a fuss out of any small extreme in weather, and I can only consider us fortunate that we dont suffer the extremes most other countries do.

As a Geographer (well, I was) my favourite area was 'hazards' (which includes fires and floods) and some of the impacts can be mind-numbingly horrific...yet unfortunately, the likelihood of occurence always seems to be higher in those areas where the impact will be higher, being more suitable areas for settlements. So cruel.

(and I'm done - shutting up now!)

Thoughts with those in Australia though, just a shame we can't do more.

Reliable word from a high ranking 'firie' friend of ours is that police have apprehended a 14 year old male in relation to one of the fires and have him under lock and key for his own protection. :|

Oh bother, I just realised I'm going to have to miss Bat The Symphony as the only Scottish date is while I'm away in England, typical! Guess I'll just have to make up for it by going to multiple Vamps Rock dates towards the end of the year.

My biggest dislike is that very cold means paying for heating. Roll on summer! And soon.

Glad you're safe and hope the grass fires don't get any worse. My heart goes out to all those people who've lost everything in the fires. I thank my lucky stars I'm neither affected by floods or fires.

were the hell did this snow come from

~Helen~ 12 Feb 2009 13:45

[RANT]And from cold to the the tropical... my office is within an office, so although it has windows, they don't open and only look into another office - which also has no windows (it's so healthy!)...because of this my office is always pretty warm - even in the depths of winter, it can be a happy 20 degrees C in here without having any heating on.

Fortunately or unfortunately, we have no fixed heating, only a portable heater. The lady with whom I share my office however, is always cold (yet still wears only one layer - usually a thin, but long sleeved, top), so frequently when I come in (we work different fixed hours and she starts before me), she already has the heater on. This morning when I arrived it was 25 degrees in here, yet she was still cold and I must not turn the heater off or she'll freeze. It took until the room was 28.5 degrees before she agreed it was warm enough and agreed to turn the heater off! Even now, it's only cooled down to 26 degrees!

I'm melting and my head hurts. The feeling faint, light headedness and blurred vision is beginning to subside though.

28.5 degrees...who the hell HEATS a room UP to that temperature?!![/RANT]

MeatGrl1 12 Feb 2009 14:01

Might have to have a rethink about the laser eye surgery...my dad, being the accountant he is, spotted an ad for a set of companies going into examinership...and optilase was one of them, now what may happen is the examiner in charge may stave off their creditors but just wait...

it hadn't hit me at first when they left me a message to say confirming the pre op on monday, meeting with surgeon and just to let you know you will have to pay the full amount...which is different to what i signed cause i was told pay €200 when meeting the surgeon with the remainder, €2100, to be paid on or before the day of the surgery.

So now i think of it, it sounds dodgy and as they may not be in business by the time the operation is supposed to roll around on march 1st, i think i will cancel

Hubby had his done about three and a half years ago, and he hasn't had any problems at all... I was incredibly worried about it before he had it done, having had a friend who lost his eyesight after having his done, (mind you, that would be about 15 years ago now) but he's not had a minute's trouble and he says it's the best thing he's ever done...
