Anyone have any idea how to get the sound working on my PC?!

My monitor is a big old one that my Mum claimed from her school (shocking, I know) and it has a speaker down each side and a volume control wheel on the bottom but they don't seem to do anything...

Checked the Volume Control screen in Windows and that's all how it should be...

Do I need some stand-alone speakers to plug into the back of the hard drive?
