Yes, call it fashion talk and then move it to a thread where he wouldn't be caught dead going/reading if he knew what was good for him. Good chess move. LOL. "FASHION TALK" ~ I'll be laughing about that one for a while.

Bernie vs. Darius for the finals eh? Who's your pick?

As it should have been Marcella and Bernie in the final there's no contest .. Bernie. She's worked hard, developed each week, and has given a really good performance every week, some weeks outstanding. Darius simply hasn't. He's had only two good weeks, and has pretty consistently failed to get the operatic resonance into his singing, getting into the final with a mediocre performance vocally. This combined with some grovelling stuff about facing his fears .. something all the others did without complaining.

Bernie's good, she's enthusiastic, and she has a big following. She'd probably win even if Katherine stepped in and took Darius' place in the finals ;) .. but she also deserves to win. Until last week Marcella was the bookies favourite .. now the smart money's on Bernie :-)

Meat's fellow critic Lawrence has his own blog about the show here

Here are some snippets which mention Mr Loaf ...

This week Katherine needed a bit of a heave up or heave down to deal with the Critics Box step. All well and good and Mr Meat in gallant mode offered her his arm as she lunged at high speed towards the back of the box. This was gratefully received. Less gratefully received was that he inadvertently trapped the end of Katherine’s pink silk fish tale under his rock and roll biker boot. Dame Jenkins was very nearly de-frocked by Meatloaf!

Much more publicly there was the saga of Darius’ flies. As he very persuasively gave us his finest Figaro, I noticed a metallic glint from beneath the jacket of his bespoke Tom Baker suit. I hissed at Meat that I thought the seven-foot singing Scotsman was infact a flying low Scotsman. Of course Meat (like George Washington before him) can’t keep his gob shut and bellowed at Darius that he needed to check his fly.

I enjoyed friday night show i cant belive bernnie did not win and iam really going to miss seeing meat loaf on tv on a friday night now.

MeatGrl1 21 Feb 2010 03:00

I voted for Bernie because I thought she was brilliant, was very sad when she didn't win because I thought it was wrong. Darius didn't do it for me personally.

CarylB 21 Feb 2010 12:00

Darius sang and performed well in the final, arguably the best he's achieved since he first sang Non Piu Andrei, which as Meat said was when "it popped for him .. and why he's in the final".

Bernie was my pick, because she sang so well every week, and we watched her improve incredibly every week. From popstar to operastar, hers was the more impressive journey imo, and I was genuinely taken aback when they announced Darius had won, because although I rarely expect phone votes to reward the performer who I think has done best over all, I thought Bernie had such a strong public following that this time I could. (Mind you, he came through on a pretty indifferent performance last week and knocked out a brilliant voice, so perhaps that should have forewarned me .. but I took that as either partisan voting, or a lot of people apparently feeling like Andy .. lol)

So, a rather disappointing result I'd agree .. but no rights or wrongs .. just the odd nature of public phone voting. They both performed well on the night, and if that night alone was a basis it would be hard to choose between them. For me Bernie performed best over the 6 weeks .. hope to hear more opera from her :)

It's been a great show to me. Even without Meat being in it I would have really enjoyed it, but being able to watch him every Friday night has been a delight, his comments always point on and made me smile, his exuberance infectious, his obvious admiration for the effort all the performers put in and his delight in their successes heartwarming, his outfits stunning :), and his own performance of BOOH brilliant.

Whatever his thoughts about doing the show may have been beforehand, he embarked on it with the thoroughness you'd expect from him, made a great contribution (I sense behind the scenes as well as on screen) and seems to have really enjoyed it, and made new friends :) Friday nights will seem a little poorer to me now.

I agree, I loved it .

Having Meat as a judge just made it a bit more special, there was NEVER a dull moment and he always came out with funny comments . Thanks Meat .

PanicLord 21 Feb 2010 20:37

I have to say, I normally can't be bothered to watch things like XFactor or Fame Acadamy, so I only watched this originally because Meat was in it. However, I discovered I actually quite liked this show, partly because of Meat, and partly because the standards were so high compared to what I was expecting. A great idea, which I hope comes back for a 2nd series.

K1ttycat 21 Feb 2010 23:06

I was quite pleased that Darius won. He seemed to really put everything into his performance and it wasn't just the singing but his acting ability that did it for me. I thought Bernie looked and sounded really stressed out and nervous. Still, it was a good show overall and I hope it returns again next year. Of course, I loved seeing Meat each week and that was originally the main reason I watched but over the weeks the whole show grew on me.

The big question (at least on the Popstar to Operastar Facebook group) is "So, exactly what did Darius win?" :)

Vickip 22 Feb 2010 04:10

That is a good question ...

ChrisBelfast 23 Feb 2010 11:18

According to today's papers the show won't have a second series as it didn't have the expected number of viewers. It said they'd hoped for bigger stars and Charlotte Church as a judge.

mib 23 Feb 2010 12:10

I really enjoyed the show, Meat's comments brought the Light to 'light Entertainment.'

In fact on the judging panel I was always the odd one out as Meat has a new album out as has Rolando and indeed Katherine. I on the other hand have only got a paint range. But some of the colours are definitely operatic!

I hope you are enjoying your stay here in Norway! :D
And please come back for a visit on your upcoming tour! We miss you! :D

And now its even been confirmed by Meat himself in this twitter/youtube. Sweden yesterday, and Norway today. And Denmark tomorrow I'll guess. A tight schedule.

I think that's a rather inflammatory statement.

Being a judge on such a show is not doing reality TV. Last time he did it, Meat was told to be crazy and that's exactly what he did.

proctorloaf 11 May 2011 09:40

Meat Loaf was the ONLY reason to watch Popstar to Opera star last season. And his arrangment of Bat Out of Hell for the show was a delight, even if the opera singer wasn't great, it was still amazing!

I agree with all of that Slice. Meat has responded to questions asking if he'll appear on another reality show as a contestant by saying no, he won't. He accepted CA for two reasons; to win money for his beloved charity, and for personal learning and development .. both of which he's achieved. Should there ever be another reality show which ticked those boxes and which he accepted, it would not offer any evidence of inconsistency, as he was being asked about the shows currently around which don't. Although imo he may still have a wistful dream about Dancing With the Stars ;)

The first week of Popstar to Operastar he was well researched and obviously wanted to give useful feedback to contestants, was repeatedly cut short, and the producers made it clear they wanted him there for crazy "Meat Loaf effect". He'd agreed to do the show as part of a total promotional deal, he's a professional, so that's what he did .. although even in the soundbites he gave from then on here was imo always a useful point, and it was obvious that he gave quite a bit of useful feedback to contestants behind the scenes. His current schedule and commitments makes it pretty obvious imo that he wouldn't be able to fit a second series planned for this summer in, even if he were asked, and asked to be the judge he would like to be.

He would imo make a marvellous judge/coach in any of the plethora of singing talent contests on TV, because he knows more about what makes a compelling stage performance than anyone I can think of, and could give useful and constructive feedback rather than set out to make it a vehicle to promote himself, unlike so many of the judges we see on these shows. However, because of his expressed concerns about these shows, plus producers would probably want what they see as a "crazy Meat Loaf" performance. So I think it's unlikely to happen, although he would make a terrific contribution in that role were he allowed to make it in the way he would want, and felt moved to accept. And should that ever be the case it would be invaluable for the contestants, and demonstrate his integrity, rather than any inconsistency.

He'd also be a great person for Trump to bring back as an ex-contestant adviser .. and this wouldn't demonstrate any inconsistency either ;)

Caryl
