I love that film. Based on a true story. What a bunch of losers those mob guys are. Not cool, like in The Godfather... lol ... And 'Babe, that one scene, in the cellar after Donnie and the his group of mob fellas gun down the competing mob fellas, what they have to do. I can't imagine how the FBI could ever train you for that ! Poor guy must STILL be having nightmares.

I watched Alice In Wonderland, the deppie one as the Mad Hatter and it was DELICIOUS !!!! Mother-in-law had no interest, husband said he liked it, cried a bit (he's a very emotional man... lol ... ) I cried a bit, laughed a bit and totally loved it. I think it would have been a bit overwhelming for me if I'd seen it on a huge screen as well as in 3-D. I'm so old and old school ... lol ... I really don't need all that. Loved it and will watch it again !

I've had the DVD for ages and only just got round to watching it... I don't know how you could do that sort of job, pretend to be someone so completely different from who you've always been, and stay sane...

Speaking of sanity, I'm delving into the mind of Mr. Tim Burton with The Nightmare Before Christmas - it's the fault of that blooming' advert on TV at the moment, but I can't say I mind too much ;0)

The Fog

as with most carpenter movies, I can see how this must have been terrifying in its day, but it doesnt really stand the test of time as a horror movie. A few good scenes, but overall was too slow and too little tention.

(I really like The Thing though, that's the JC movie that breaks the rule!)

Sue K 22 Nov 2010 15:05

I watched The Crazies and LOVED it ! The idea of how things came to be was a bit like Outbreak, but sans the monkey and Dustin Hoffman to save the day ! And the victims were much like, well... ZOMMMBiEEEEES !!! ... lol ... I love a zombie !!! Tonight I watch the latest episode of The Walking Dead ~ ZOMBIEEEES !!! ... lol ...

I might add I watched 28 weeks later right afterwards... though it was clearly an inferior movie, I thought it was a lot scarier.

The Flying Mouse 12 Dec 2010 21:44

 Watched Being John Malkovich last night.

It wins the f*cked up movie of the year award from me.

Seemed very slow and drawn out to start, but pretty damn funny at times. Some scenes needed playing more than once, especially when Molkovich becomes Malkovich.

I think this movie warrants a second watch at some point 8)

RadioMaster 12 Dec 2010 21:46

Neil I just got around to watch the original Dawn of the Dead. Gotta say it's quite good, I still prefer the remake though. Its the cheap effects (zombie makeup for example) that makes it unintentionally funny at times. Also I think running zombies are much more frightening!

A Slice Of English 12 Dec 2010 21:49

Saw Cats & Dogs earlier today. STILL love that film nearly 10 years later!!

 It's cheesy, and fun, and although running zombies are scarrier there are a few chilling moments.
Most of all it's pretty goofy lol.

Running zombies was a pretty radical idea, but I think things went too far in Land Of The Dead where a zombie starts acting like a leader and thinking and problem solving.
Goes too far for me when zombies can engineer explosions.

AndrewG 12 Dec 2010 22:20

Running zombies suck in my opinion. George A Romero thinks so too.

A slow moving army of the undead which grows ganging up on you and eventually surrounding you is how it should be done imo.

The remake of Dawn of the Dead is completely forgettable. Nothing interesting going on. Original is one of the best, if not THE best Zombie movies that will ever be made. RJ you are simply discovering this stuff far too late imo.

RadioMaster 12 Dec 2010 22:56

maybe it's just a generation thing... Same with Halloween. I never understood what was so great about this movie. I guess today we're spoiled with so much action, shock and gore that the old stuff doesnt scare us anymore...

regarding running zombies:
In movies like the Dawn remake or 28 days/weeks later the zombies are scarier because they act like wild, ferocious (sp?) animals, not like a bunch of people who just broke out of a retirement home...

A Slice Of English 12 Dec 2010 23:02

28 Days was a genius film and I absolutely love it.

I actually like the zombies when they're slow and shambling but as they begin to smell blood or sense human activity, their speed increases as they begin to act like feral animals to slake their thirst. Love that!

On a side note, I am currently enjoying The Walking Dead. Anyone else watching that?

AndrewG 12 Dec 2010 23:13

28 Days later was good. 28 weeks was only disturbing in my opinion. Seeing a woman tied down to a table having her eyes pressed out is one of the most awful things I've ever seen. It's nothing to do with quality horror in my opinion.

I like the original Halloween starring Jamie Lee Curtis alot. I think I like it because of her character. She came off well as a bright, normal high school girl, not one of those big-boobied bims so often used in slasher films. In the film, she was spooked by whomever it was she felt was following her and I don't remember once having to tell her "DON'T LOOK IN THE CLOSET !!" She seemed to know to stay away. It drives me MAD when character in films seem to know something bizarre is going on and still they go to investigate every weird noise ! In Halloween 2, JLC character became a wimp. I know she went through alot, but still I felt she was overtly wimpy and after that I was pretty much done with the Halloween series. Imo, the doctor, portrayed by Donald (can't think his last name at the moment) was scarier and creepier than Michael ! ... ...

Is that the one starring Matthew Broderick ? I saw ads and thought I'd hate it. I watched it once and thought "eh". I watched it again not long after and liked it... lol ... Go figure !

It took me about four watches of Batman (starring Jack Nicholson) to end up adoring it !

Yep :yep:. A perfect example of why too much CGI is a bad thing. No matter how good it may look at the time (and this didn't look that good at the time), it will never age well. In 20 years we'll all be saying how poor Avatar looks!

I love that one- I had in my "Top 10 movies" ! :D

The last movie I saw was Black Swan- apparently no one else did. I'm not sure if I liked it...

Before that one, it was True Grit- the remake. That one I did like. :-)

AndrewG 04 Jan 2011 02:05

Toy Story 3 over Christmas. One of my all time favourite films. Best animated film I've seen and I really think it deserves a best film oscar in fact.

Saw Tron Legacy at the cinema last week. It was ok. Stunning effects I have to say. Thought most of the story sucked and seemed too Matrixy for my liking. The ending was great though and a fab "Here they come" homage to Star Wars too.

"Crazies" (2010 version) this evening. It's ok for a rental, nothing I haven't seen done better by George A Romero.

The Flying Mouse 04 Jan 2011 18:17

 Eutopia/Atoll K/Crusoe Land (it's been released under a few different names).

Laurel & Hardy's last film, and one i've not watched before.

To be honest, I wish I hadn't.
Some of the old fun was still there (certainly enough for the odd laugh) but both Stan and Ollie looked ill, old, and well past their prime (although it's worth noting in all fairness that both were taken seriously ill during the making of the film).
The production was terrible too.The sound seemed muffled in a lot of places, and the lighting of the film was very poorly done.A lot of the time faces on screen are obscured by large patches of shinning light.

As I said, there are still funny momnent in the film, but I think it's sad that this was the last film that those two giants of comedy appeared in.

Evil One 04 Jan 2011 18:24

Goldeneye. A good film, but Piss Bros hadn't got a handle on Bond yet. Also whoever was responsible for the music score should be shot. :weirdo:

Éric Serra, he's French. Says enough.

GoldenEye has good bits (Famke Janssen ) but they rushed it to the cinema and apparently a whole car chase scene in the BMW Z3 was completely cut as the car wasn't ready and it's some kind of make shift model you see in the film and not the actual car. Stupid, a car chase towards the end of the film is exactly what is lacking in my opinion.

I really like what David Arnold did with the music in subsequent movies but I hate the Daniel Craig reboot stuff, they should have stuck with Pierce for another 10 years and the same style jokes and fun imo. Was getting really good by "Die Another Day" and now it's completely serious, no gadgets, no Q or R, no punch lines and thus utterly forgettable imo.

Evil One 04 Jan 2011 18:41

10 years might be pushing it, but another couple of Piss Bros films would have been fine by me. Just no more invisible cars or Lee Tamahori :badidea:.

Hated Die Another Day at first. It's like a Carry On film. To be fair there are some amazing bits let down by some appalling bits. I do like it more with repeat viewings. The World Is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies are his best for me.

I love Casino Royale though - thought it was the best Bond film for decades. It still has humour, some gadgets, but is back to being a serious, proper, stylish spy film. Granted, Quantum of Solace is a little too devoid of humour and needs to pace itself a bit more - I can't help feeling some interesting scenes and dialogue ended up on the cutting room floor.

Yes, it is just slightly uncertain. But I think I came away from it thinking he is GOING to be a great Bond. And the music is god awful except for the title track.

oops, forgot, saw the third Narnia film at the flics the other day, still liking 3D films

AndrewG 04 Jan 2011 20:15

Think Tomorrow Never Dies is my all time favourite bond. Thought Jonathan Pryce was the best, most theatrical villain ever which worked really well and such an awesome car scene in the parking lot. I think Meat Loaf would have made a good villain too. Too bad he got such a rubbish film as Formula 51 / The 51th State to work with instead of Bond. :-(

A Slice Of English 04 Jan 2011 20:18

I actually liked 51st state.

Last saw the French film "Martyr" last night. Enjoyed it very much.

Der kalte Himmel (The cold heaven)
It´s a movie about a mother from a autistic, highly skilled boy.
It shows the terrifying conditions in the children psychiatry in Germany in the late sixties. Horrible to see that Germany was so a small-minded land not so long ago.

That was a disappointment, but to be fair I don't think all the blame can be pinned on George. I found some of the direction to be deeply uninspired and uninvolving, the script was pants in places, they wasted a great female character, and I would prefer not to think about the monkeys or the fridge thing.

I thought Harrison Ford was pretty good though, and it had a great intro.

George always had envisioned the whole sage as a 9 parter ... Journal Of The Whills was the overall title as I remember. Sadly any plot ideas he had originally will now be rewritten to take into account CGI and merchandise marketing opportunities.

AndrewG 06 Jan 2011 11:07

BTW. the latest I heard on Star Wars is that they are not planning any more films at all. Also I don't really get what has happened with the TV series they were going to do.

Instead I've read they are announcing a Blu Ray release for later this year and then a release of all 6 films, yet again, in 3D in the cinema starting with Phantom Menace next year. After which we will get another Blu Ray 3D release. :?

Also to be rereleased in 3D is Titanic next April to mark the ships' 100th Anniversary, possibly the entire Harry Potter series and all the Shrek movies again. :?

I'm a fan of the first three movies but this one is kind of disappointing. Appears a little uninspired to me (compared to the other movies), I don't think that a young co-star was necessary, the fridge szene is bizarre :wtf: and why the hell is Shia LaBeouf riding a present-day Harley-Davidson when the movie is supposed to take place in the 1950s (while wearing clothes that make him appear like Marlon Brando in The Wild One - but Brando rode a Triumph).

AndrewG 08 Jan 2011 04:49

Star Trek Generations on Blu Ray.
Blu Ray certainly enhanced the movie experience with this one. Even straight from the simple graphics on the menu screen and the brilliant music by Dennis McCarthy it was a thrill to sit through.

Interesting too to see almost 30 minutes of deleted scenes including the original ending which I think wasn't too bad actually but I can see why the chose to reshoot parts.

Probably my second favourite Star Trek movie, after First Contact which I still think is the best and will probably never be surpassed.

Great stuff here too. Feels pretty timeless in fact, even though the film is already 17 years old. Fab Blu Ray presentation I would highly recommend to any fans.

Hypnobabe 08 Jan 2011 17:16

The Brave - Johnny Depp's first and so far only attempt at directing. Very dark subject matter, but not gory, at least, not up until the point I'm at so far....

The Flying Mouse 08 Jan 2011 21:00

 A Japanese anime film called Lupin III :wtf:
Jo and I were channel hopping at stupid o clock this morning (without much luck of finding something good) and I paused on the film just long enough to do a silly voice on the subtitles. Then another, resulting in the two of us watching nearly the damn whole film voicing all the characters between us.

In our version, a Scotish count abducted a young lady who sounded like Mrs Cohen from The Life Of Brian.
The hero (a proffessional thief) then tried to free her with his sidekick (who sounded like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas) an Australian samurai warrior, and a woman with a high squeeky voice (not Jo's :bleh: ).
The Count's gardener had a thick Japanese accent (until halfway through when he had a sex change because Jo started to do his voice) while the Japanese police detective chasing the thief seems to have spent a lot of time in Germany.
Everyone at Interpol was from Birmingham.

It was all too daft to mention, but it was a lot of laughs as me and Jo tried to keep up (especially as I kept getting my accents for each character mixed up :lmao: ).

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom. I realise it wasn't a particularly good film when it first came out, but it has aged poorly compared to Raiders Of The Lost Ark. This is the first time I've watched it in HD and the special effects are bad. Even the mine cart chase isn't as good as I remember it. I know it got hacked to pieces in this country to get a PG certificate, but even so it is a disjointed mess. The worse part though has to be Mrs Spielberg. All she does is scream through out, although given all that happens to her character perhaps that is understandable. In all a

Next up on my list of shitty films: Die Another Day.

Yeah Spielberg recognised quickly what he had done with her character was all wrong in Indiana. The Laura Dern character in Jurassic Park was his response to that he said in an interview. The good thing about the quality of the visual effects in JP and other such nineties films is I doubt the movies will as a result age less quickly as for example the original Indiana trilogy seems to have. Some bits still look good but there are indeed some horrendous scenes, ie the mine cart as you say and also the blimp scene in Indy 3 looks awful.

First Contact is for me the only decent one of the Next Generation films, and is an absolutely cracking film imho. Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country are brilliant original Trek films, and I thought the recent Star Trek XI was awesome too, and the best of the bunch. It was what previous Star Trek films could have been if they had had the budget.

Well yeah, budget was a big problem with a lot of the Star Trek films. (Star Trek 5 visual effects - shockingly bad! Story wasn't too bad - liked the idea and a lot of the humour was good).
I thought the last two Next gen films were utterly useless. Such a waste of that cast. Most of the next gen episodes are better than those films. Crazy.

I liked the new one but felt old Spock was an unnecessary character and didn't make any sense at all. Why would you get the oldest person alive flying a superfast spaceship and try to rescue a civilisation?
In that sense the story could have been a bit different if old Spock had to be used per see, the idea is actually very similar to Generations in that respect (old character from the original series travels through time to help the new characters of the franchise).
Perhaps the baton should have been handed over from a character of the next gen series who travelled through time. Age wise it would have made more sense to have say Picard or Data fly that spaceship. They should have just forgotten about the Data Nemesis thing and gone with him I think.

Remind me to put you two on ignore on Nov 9th 2012 then :))

Evil One 15 Jan 2011 20:35

Will that be the day you announce the next James Bond film as the best thing ever, a non stop rollercoaster of emotional brilliance and a tidal wave of wonderment and awe from beginning to end?

Seriously, as long as it is more Casino Royal than Quantum of Shite and if it brings back Q, Moneypenny and a bit more humour then it can be a good film. I still would have picked Clive Owen over Daniel Craig though.

AndyK 15 Jan 2011 20:47

No, I'll wait till the initial rush dies down to see it, if I've not had an invite to the premiere that is.

The Next Three days

It's good, not the 100 mile a minute action packed sequence the trailer makes it out to be, but still good.

Just slate it now. You know you want to. ;-)

The Bourne Supremacy. Matt as Bourne isn't a match for Daniel as Bond.

Were you so sure of that opinion that you had to say it twice, Andy?

Salt. Good enough to keep me awake when I'd had difficulty keeping my eyes open five minutes before it started...

It seems repetitive opinion expression has become contagious!

The World Is Not Enough. It has some excellent action sequences, but the two young ladies are poor. Piss Bros made an awesome Bond but was let down by all around him. If only his Bond could magically be transposed into Roger Moore's films. :D

AndyK 16 Jan 2011 19:18

I blame BT entirely. It's never my fault ;-)

The Amityville Horror. The original version, not the remake

The King's Speech - fantastic film, highly recommended, and with an F-word scene to rival Four Weddings!

Too bad he didn't direct that himself and instead opted to make a pile of poo.

One of Sam Peckinpah's best movies, great performances by Coburn and Schell.

 I remember hearing that most of the uniforms and equipment used were original
Haven't seen the movie for a long long time, so it could be worth another watch in the not too distan t future.

Fan of Kate Hudson and found this in Oxfam a few days ago, and I have to say it's an OK film, not my favourite but it's OK. Favourite of her's so far is still Almost Famous which also stars the very gorgeous Billy Crudupt. This movie was passable.
